The Möntti story is so so lovely!

So, we do have many stories with grossling PoV after all. Still, I haven’t come across any where the protagonist were such an active character and retained most of the sanity (with the notable exception of Pastor A). Of course Grey’s Wanderer is only at Y8 by the time of this story.

I regret that all I've got to share is a WIP, but I won't have any more time to work on it for a while.  Maybe you can work out where I'm going with this from the snippet.

Spoiler: long lost relatives is the prompt • show

Sigrun and Mikkel had barely put down their bags at the Øresund base when there was a knock on their door.  A junior officer gasped and took a step back from the threshold when Mikkel opened the door, but licked his lips and stammered, "Begging your pardon, but I’m told that Mikkel Madsen has a visitor in the commissary."

Sigrun raised an eyebrow.  "If it’s that admiral again, he could just stay where he is and we’d hear him."

Mikkel snorted but with a rueful shrug followed the blinking officer back to the main building.  He noted that several people did double-takes as he passed by, and whispered behind his back.  Now what, he fumed, I don’t even remember any of these people.  Damn rumours.

The junior officer stole sidelong looks at Mikkel as they strode down the corridors, but didn’t say anything more until they reached the commissary.  "They’re not serving again until 1700 hours, but I could get you something hot to drink?  While you talk."  He held open the door with an ingratiating smile.

"If you like."  The officer headed toward the kitchen, while Mikkel let his eyes adjust to the dimmer light inside the commissary.  There was a person at one of the tables by the wall.  With the long-ingrained habit of poor vision, Mikkel focused on navigating between the tables and chairs until he could get close enough to make out details of the visitor.  He reached his destination without mishap.

The visitor did not stand up to greet Mikkel.  Nor did Mikkel sit down.  They stared at one another in silence.

Mikkel finally broke off the stare to take the mug of drink from the hovering junior officer.  When the latter showed no signs of leaving, both Mikkel and the visitor turned to him.  While each said, "Thank you," it was obviously not the same phrase.  The junior officer shot them each a nervous look in turn but withdrew.

Well it looks like it will be a doozy :).  But now we have a cliff-hanger  🥲

Whomever this person is they are definitely high-ranking.  Guesses can be anything
Spoiler: show
past spouse, he thought dead, child, sibling and so on...

The statement "while each said, "Thank you," it was obviously not the same phrase."
I was thinking Mikkel was polite and the other more of an order...

Fate gives all of us three teachers, three friends, three enemies, and three great loves in our lives. But these twelve are always disguised, and we never know which one is which until we've loved them, left them, or fought them.

I am betting on

Spoiler: show
time traveling Mikkel from the past or future, where Danish was/will be different!

Actually, I thought that phrasing implied two different languages were used.
But, hmm, it really should be a relative for the prompt, and maybe someone who resembles Mikkel based on the reactions?

I thought it was Michael, since everyone was doing double-takes at Mikkel.

Spoiler: show

Michael! For one thing because I think Wave has been fascinated with Mikkel’s (possibly) lost twin before, if I recall correctly. But also because of what lwise suggested. And the simultaneous “thank you” seem like allusion to them moving like one, as twins sometimes do.

Also, if he (Michael) has been lost in the reclamation attempt and is now miraculously returned, that would make good gossip! On the other hand, Mikkel himself is a bit of a celebrity after A1 (later there will be a grand opera about his heroic mission to Silent Denmark, assisted by a few persons of other nationalities too).

I look forward to this. Did wonder if it might be Michael. Especially if they are identical twins, it could be very confusing!

I remembered a pair of identical twins we know: Star had known them since he and they were all teenagers, I met them all when they were in their twenties, so a long acquaintance! Most people couldn’t tell the two women apart, not even their parents and boyfriends. Star could tell them apart when they were younger, because one of them had, as he described it, ‘a lump of anger in her’. Then when in her thirties she sorted out her feelings about an old trauma that hadn’t happened to her sister, he couldn’t tell them apart either, until I showed him how I distinguished them: one has a tiny facial scar that the other doesn’t. But otherwise they were truly identical! I imagine Michael and Mikkel being like that.

... I seem to remember a piece of art from Minna showing Michael and Mikkel side by side, Mikkel quite clearly being less eager for the meet-up ...

dmeck, that is a possibility I never considered, buuuut considering where the person has been (no spoilers), that's actually a really good take that I may steal incorporate.
lwise and Jitter have the right of it (although tehta's idea is very intriguing albeit horrifying), you know me well.  You say I'm fascinated with Mikkel's twin brother Michael?  Maaaaaybe you're right. I've tagged several works on AO3 with either Michael or Mikkel & Michael, and there's one other not tagged.  I have considered angst, unspecified tragedy, humour, horrible puns, and others that are a bit of both dark & light.

Alas nothing I have produced matches this gem off tumblr (speaking of the image JoB references):

All jokes aside, this might be the first time I've considered Michael in post-canon.

Spoiler: show

Here ya go!  It is Michael he is the chairperson of the Nordic Council.  He and Mikkel had a disagreement (family, love rivals (Michael won) ,running the farm, politics..whatever.). He needs a favor that only our little band of heroes can manage!!

Michael intentionally sent Mikkel to the Silent World on a grossly underfunded expedition, nearly a suicide mission?  Wow.

Michael wouldn't have known that Mikkel would be hired, would he? When the decision was made, the team had not been picked.
