And Grey, Dmeck, really great, as well as very big, cats!

I think of it moving like one of the Star Wars AT-AT's
Fate gives all of us three teachers, three friends, three enemies, and three great loves in our lives. But these twelve are always disguised, and we never know which one is which until we've loved them, left them, or fought them.

Dmeck, yeah, it looks like it would resemble an AT-AT in movement! And in cat tank 3, did it go witha Valkyrie to Valhalla, with Tuuri to Tuonela, or some other mechanical heavens? Possibly to be reincarnated as a shuttle cat?

Well the person's spirit that what was the tank cat could go to the hereafter wherever the reader wished they went.  If you were going to follow Canon, then that person would have gone where ever all the Danish ghosts went.  It is up to the reader to decide..

The person just was finally freed :)

The actual tank cat could be repurposed for whatever as time goes on..  Maybe cat-tank 2 or space would be cool.  The shuttle cat for grey's spaceship
(to infinity and Beyond....)

Two very fitting stories, dmeck! And actually, they could be part of the same continuity, couldn't they? The person moves on, the tank becomes a memorial... And our heroes are reunited at the site.

(My one idea for this prompt so far was to write a story in which all the couples in the original team reminisce about the romantic--or maybe pre-romantoc--moments they experienced in the tank. Onni could get in on the action, too, because he communicated via that radio. But I decided that I've been doing enough shipping lately, and should display some dignity.)

Yes the stories could be the sequence, though I wrote the "second one" first

The couple story sounds neat.  (I think most people do not mind ships ;) )

dignity is over rated (at least for me. )

Tehta, IMHO there's no such thing as too much shipping, and what you will see next is proof of my belief. ;)

dmeck, and lwise, lovely stories! They actually inspired me.

So here it goes. I hope you like it. (I'll put it under spoilers to save space)

Just Before

Spoiler: show
"What's that, Tuuri? Looks awfully old!"

"You would never guess, my dear Reynir, and wouldn't believe anyway."

Reynir reached from behind and began to tickle Tuuri. She burst out laughing immediately,  before he even had time to properly touch her ribs. "But you will tell me anyway!"

She laughed so hard! He stopped, afraid she would ran out of air. After a minute or two she composed herself and turned the seat to face him.

"All right, all right! That's a low blow, but you win!"

"Good to hear that!" He replied.

She smiled and pointed a finger at him. "But expect revenge!"

"We will see..." Reynir sat on the other command seat. Across the window Port Madsen's docks were on a calm moment, probably a shift turn. "Now tell me what that piece of trash is doing in this lovely hunk of junk."

Tuuri made an indignant face at him. "The Kitty is not a hunk of junk! It may be a bit old..."

"A bit?" Reynir interrupted, gesturing towards the command deck's floor. The carbon fiber composite was so worn that the small anti-slip bumps were gone in the areas that surrounded the seats.

Tuuri ignored him. "As I was saying, a bit old, a bit worn here and there, but still quite solid. These ships turned out to be reliable workhorses, back in their day..." She paused as Reynir stared at her with a grin. "What's so funny?"

"I'm just delighted to see you angry."

She rose from her seat and walked to him, grabbing his long braid and pulling his face closer. "No, mister." She said with a serious tone in her voice. "You're delighted because I'm just mildly annoyed. You don't want to see me angry."

"Now I am scared."

"You should!" Tuuri replied, pulling his lips into hers.

---

"So you're going to tell me what's that thing in the command deck?" Reynir asked, offering her a cup of coffee.

Tuuri sat on the bed, stretched and took the cup. Reynir was amazed, just as he ever was, by the way her already large eyes shone whenever he brought her coffee.

"Well, since you asked kindly, and gave me this." She took a brief sip. "I'll tell you. That analog watch made me curious too."

"Seriously? You, curious?"

"Shh! So I looked at the ship's files. It happens that the Kitty was the second ship of the Felis Catus class of exploratory vessels..."

"Sorry, that was before or after the Rash? No, please! Continue! I just couldn't help myself."

Tuuri waited for a few seconds and resumed. "...However the first unit, the Felis, was essentially a prototype that never became operational. So this..." She gestured around. "...was the first unit to fly. And someone decided that it would be a nice touch to insert the mechanical watch from the original cat tank on its "spiritual" descendant."

"What? That watch came from the cat tank? From the first expedition? Wow!"

"Yes, hard to believe. When they moved it to the museum in Copenhagen the watch was missing, and they made a replica. When they found the original it was placed on a separate shelf, and... well, someone thought it was good publicity to put it on a small ship conceived for exploration."

"And the others, they know about it?"

"I guess not. Sigrun and Mikkel have been busy organizing everything, Onni and Lalli were going to check for their own magical supplies, and Emil..."

"...is where Lalli is." Reynir completed.

"So was I right? Isn't it amazing to have a piece like that with us?"

"I guess it is... I just hope it isn't haunted, or something like that."

"I suppose you, my dear, are aware the your ancestor managed to get rid of all the ghosts in that area." Tuuri said, smiling at him.

Reynir smiled back. "Yes... Yes, of course."

"And you would be able to see any wandering spirit, right?"

He sat by her side and took the coffee cup from her hands. "I suppose so... unless I was distracted with something else."

It was Tuuri's time to grin. "Could you put that on the table? I have one serious thing to tell you."

Reynir did as she asked and turned back to her, waiting. "What's the problem?"

She gestured him to come closer. "It's time."

"Time for what?"

Her grin grew wider, and Reynir felt her fingers already touching his ribs.

"Revenge!"

---

It has been sleeping for long, so long that time had lost its meaning. And what dreams had come in that sleep!
Now it fell through distance and time, surely towards another dream.
But then came light, and sound, electricity and heat.
And voices. Known voices, from a long time ago.
It understood.
The wheel had turned and turned, and finally came the moment when the hands of the clock where together again.
It settled, filling every corner, every hinge and bulkhead, every strange, complex and powerful device.
They were all part of it now, and it was back.
A new adventure awaited.

And you will get another cat tank in space when I put up the final chapters of ‘An Historical Document’. Along with some very odd refugees. Those who have read ‘A Few of Mikkel’s Secrets’ may remember my OCs Linden and Gale? And they had descendants too…..

The part about shipping and dignity was a joke... I ship everyone and have no dignity, as my AO3 page will prove.

Grey, what a sweet story. I love the interplay between Tuuri and Reynir. Poor guy stands no chance. Good thing she is (mostly) nice.

And what a great prompt this is proving to be! So many reponses. I was almost thinking... perhaps we could collect all these tank-related entries into a single AO3 work? Or is that too much effort?

Anyway, here is my contribution (The shipping content is minimal, and i think it needs a stronger ending. But Minna did say foxes took up residence in the tank...)

Spoiler: show

“It’s looking good!” Sigrun stepped out from behind the tank, her walkaround inspection complete. “There’s a few plants in weird places, and at least two bird-nests--abandoned, I think--but I saw no visible rust. You Danes sure build your army vehicles to last!”

As usual, Sigrun’s unexpected compliment filled Mikkel with an unexpected warmth. Still, he kept his expression serious as he said, “Well, it’s only been five years.”

“It’s great that it’s not very rusty,” said Emil, “but it’s much smaller than I remembered.”

“Oh, Emil, was that a complaint?” Mikkel could not resist. “I distinctly remember you saying that if we managed to reach the tank before the VAH Expeditions team, you would never complain again as long as you live.”

“How was my statement a complaint? It was a plain fact.”

“A weird fact,” said Lalli. “I remember it exactly the same size. How can you be so bad at remembering?”

“Because I am not–”

“Oi, twigs!” Sigrun took a break from poking at the treads with a stick. “Why are you out here? Shouldn’t you be inside, checking for danger?”

“I was, but two mages checking is enough. Also,” Lalli added under his breath, “they are being disgusting.”

“Hmm.” Sigrun strode over to the front door and started knocking on it. “Mages! Be disgusting on your own time! We’re all out here waiting!”

The door opened almost at once.

“It’s clear!” Onni declared in Icelandic as he stepped out, before adding something in Finnish.

“Kiitos!” said Emil with some satisfaction. “See, Mikkel, the tank’s smallness is a plain, unadorned fact. Even Onni noticed it.”

Before Mikkel could reply, a distinctive noise filled the air: the sound of Reynir squeeing as he ran out of the tank. “Eee! There’s fox cubs in the bunkroom! They’re so adorable, you all have to come see!”

“No, they don't,” said Onni. “The foxes won’t like it.”

“Oh!” Reynir’s excitement turned to concern “So what should we do?”

Once more, Mikkel could not help himself. “Clearly, we must forego our plan of reclaiming the tank, and leave it to the foxes. It is the only way.”

Reynir’s eyes widened in shock “But… We’ve come so far…”

"Excuse me!" Sigrun elbowed her way into the group, clearly annoyed by all the Icelandic conversation. While Mikkel rubbed at his ribs, she asked him, “Do we have a problem?”

“Maybe,” replied Mikkel. “Apparently, the tank has been claimed by wild foxes, and thus is not actually abandoned. I am now wondering whether this fact interferes with the legal status of our salvage operation.”

“What?” Emil had followed Sigrun. “Is this a Danish law thing? Because I am sure that my aunt and uncle will not care. In fact, if their team ever finds this place, and tells them about the foxes, they’ll probably try to employ them. For a pittance. As…  engineers or cooks or accountants or something.”

“Or babysitters,” said Lalli ominously, over his shoulder.

“Right,” said Sigrun. “We can’t let any of that happen. So, who here is the best at emergency fox relocation?”

In the silence that followed, Mikkel decided against translating the question into Icelandic and simply turned towards Lalli. “Do you think you could find a new place for the foxes? And move them there?”

Lalli thought for a moment, then nodded.

“Good man!” Sigrun grinned. “Okay, while the scout moves the foxes, let’s all get started on cleaning. Non-immunes indoors, pretty boy and me out here where we can keep an eye on the woods. Mikkel, you’d better take a look at the inside too, to make sure the new engine will fit.”

“I am sure it will,” said Mikkel. “But I will check. And afterwards, I might also check if any of the books we had to leave behind are salvageable.”

“I do hope so. We worked so hard for these. Hey!” Sigrun shouted suddenly, in Onni’s direction. “Where are you going? Mikkel, tell him he’s supposed to be cleaning, not running off into the woods with his cousin.”

Mikkel did, and listened to the response, before translating. “He says he wants Lalli to take him to his sister’s cairn, just for a moment.”

“Oh. By all means.” Somber for once, Sigrun gave Onni a nod. “I’ll go myself, but later. Give them some space. And hey, maybe they’ll even find a spot for the foxes, around there somewhere? I think she would have liked that, almost as much as our Icelander.”

Mikkel could only agree.

Another great story, Tehta! Well done! Interesting how after so many years "revisiting" the place of Tuuri's death remains... uncomfortable.  :'(

Anyway it's just like dmeck said!

About putting them together on AO3, I like the idea, but IDK how it's done. Is it possible to create a collection with stories from different authors?
(and that reminds me that I have to put my stories on AO3...)

So thanks everybody. I'd like to ask if you noticed three references to very different stories (not mine) that ended up in "Just Before".
I hope none of you sees it as me being presumptuous. That's never my intent. It's just a game I enjoy playing with my friends...

Spoiler: show

Hamlet - "To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub; For in that sleep of death what dreams may come: When we have shuffled off this mortal coil"

Spoiler: show
"The wheel had turned and turned, and finally came the moment when the hands of the clock where together again."

The Wheel of Time - “The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again.”

I looked briefly at a group publish on A03.  I thought I could add every one as co-authors and attach the pictures from the forum (links from links lol)

The only one I may have trouble with is the original story (The Other Team Member, but I was just going to publish the url there.  )

I think if I add people as co-authors they should be able to edit the story, and have write access

I agreeable to people, I will try after work (it was not a 10 minute thing, so I will need to try later)
