Thanks, dmeck and Jitter! I'm particularly happy with this Reynir. It took a lot of work, but he looks awesome (Of course the original model was very pretty, which helps a lot).

It took me a minute to discern the differences when I first saw the remake.  It was truly well done

I agree with everyone, that edit was so well done and seamless! At first I was like, 'oh yes, she does look a little masculine, I guess all those artisits tended to use male models..."
And it's a great idea, anyway. If I had more time right now I would look for other great works of art to repurpose.

Dmeck, I already made a comment on ao3, so I just wanted to add that I was hoping that someone would mention Onni's artistic tendencies! He needs to express his feelings.

Thanks dmeck and Tehta!  ^-^
I'm actually quite happy with the result, because it took a lot more effort than I previously thought. The only parts that I didn't had to alter were hands, knees, feets and forehead (above the eyebrows). And I just adjusted the colour of eyes and hair, without any other change. Of course the face was the most delicate part, trying to bring the cartoon face of Reynir into a "real" one (so I had to work on nose, lips, cheeks, chin, jawline...).
And I found out that Botticelli's Venus was much more feminine, round and soft than I remembered, and that's an interesting part of this kind of edit: You have to look intensely at the original, and learn about it. (just like we do when drawing existing buildings on architectural drawing classes).
I'd love to see your take on some other painting, Tehta! I'll see if I remember something...
Anyway I made a side-by-side comparison if anyone is interested and/or wants to play "spot the differences". :) (under spoiler to save space in the thread)

I started thinking about Onni's Sigrun-approved art. And then I wrote the following. Apologies for continued silliness, but I really enjoy writing the gang interact (in spite of the language struggle, which is real):

Spoiler: show
Onni smiled his way through breakfast, but it was only the cheerful tune he whistled as he left the table that tore Sigrun’s attention away from her morning meat.

“Will you listen to that!” she said. “The grump actually sounds happy. What’s gotten into him, I wonder?”

“My guess would be Reynir,” replied Mikkel.

“Yes?” asked Reynir eagerly at the mention of his name.

“No,” said Lalli at the same time, sending Mikkel a dark look.

Mikkel weighed up his two potential victims and chose to start with the one much more likely to disappear unless addressed immediately. “Why are you so quick to jump to denial, Lalli?”

Lalli just stared at him. Oh, right.

“I mean, why do you say ‘no’ so quickly? You must be aware that your cousin has needs. Ones which he has, probably, suppressed for years. I am talking,” Mikkel continued, growing slightly vexed by Lalli’s unchanging blank expression, “about sex.”

“No. Onni is not happy because of sex.”

“I know it is very hard to imagine someone who raised you indulging in–”

“I don’t have to imagine. I know why Onni is… like that.”

“You do?” Emil finally joined the conversation. “Why?”

“Because he told me.”

Well, that was definitely worth pursuing. “What did he tell you?” Mikkel asked.

“Here. See for yourself.”

Mikkel accepted the crumpled leaflet, unfolded it, then immediately passed it to Emil. “Translation, please.”

“Er.” Emil stared at the paper for quite a while. Everyone else stared at Emil: Lalli with fond curiosity, Reynir with confusion, and Sigrun with impatience.

“Well, spit it out!’ she said. “It’s a party invite, isn’t it? That lone wolf got himself invited to a party and did not tell us about it, and now we’ve missed it! Just wait until I–”

“It’s an invite, yes,” said Emil. “But we haven’t missed anything: it’s for tomorrow. And,” he continued over Sigrun’s attempt to interrupt, “ it’s not an invite to a party. It’s for a… show? Display? Of… carvings?” He looked to Lalli for confirmation.

“Not carvings. Bones and plants, tied together. Into weird big things.”

“Like the structures he kept leaving behind when we were tracking him?” Mikkel asked. “I did wonder: why does he keep making and displaying those? For…magic reasons?”

“No.” Lalli frowned. “Not now. The ones he made earlier were magic. But these new ones, they’re just stupid. He gives them names like ‘a sad dawn over Saimaa’ and says they contain his feelings.”

“See!” Sigrun elbowed Mikkel, rather painfully. “I told you he was an artist! He has all the signs! Well, the one sign: extreme moodiness.”

“But he’s not moody anymore,” Emil pointed out. “He smiled! At me, even.”

“Happiness is a mood! He’s happy because he is making sad art. Trust me, we have artists in Dalsnes. Later, he might start making happy art, and then he’ll be crying into his porridge. I have seen it happen many times.”

Mikkel really wanted to provide some sort of rebuttal, but Reynir’s confused, pleading puppy eyes were getting difficult to ignore. So, he switched to Icelandic, saying, “Sorry, Reynir, we’re just discussing art theory.”

“Really? I thought I heard you mention Onni.”

“We did. Onni’s an artist now.”

“He is?” Reynir’s eyes opened very wide. “Do you think… Would he be interested in a model?”

This was too tempting to ignore. “Why, yes! He’s currently looking for a muse. A nude one. And look, Sigrun’s already very interested.”

She certainly looked it, as she snatched the leaflet from Emil’s grasp and asked, “Where is this display, exactly? No question about it, we’re all going!”

Reynir narrowed his eyes. “Excuse me,” he said, and left the table.

The others stared at his disappearing back in surprise.

“He… doesn’t care for art,” Mikkel explained.

I think Reynir has a different type of "art" in mind.

Mikkel meant it spiritually.
You know, the way Emil and Lalli are often in each other's heads. All completely platonic.
Please ignore the later mentions of sex, they're unrelated.

Er, should I change it? Asking for reals.

Onni as an artist! I love the idea!

And from a completely different angle, something I have wondered about with our-world Finnish magic: does that system have any restrictions or recommendations as to what a mage may do for a living? In the world of SSSS I can understand that such restrictions would not be practical in terms of the survival of humanity, but I am curious as to whether such restrictions exist in current practice? Of the few folk I have known who practised Finnish (or in one case Finnish/Estonian) magic, one individual and one family were farmers, one other individual is a software engineer who intends to be a farmer when she retires, and one is a musician.

The Celtic system most familiar to me certainly has such restrictions, as do some of the Aboriginal systems (I can’t speak for all of them, far too many over too wide an area), and such of the Roma systems as I know anything about. Some of the Celtic ones at least are still being argued over, in the light of modern professions that did not exist when the rules for such things were formulated. I once sat through three weeks of debate about whether commercial airline pilot was an acceptable profession for a Druid. It is.

Ba-dum-tssssh, and *snerk*

But going back, the edit was 'master'ful indeed.

I was going to make a snerky short about Onni's artistic tree renderings, but I like these better.

Wave, I definitely agree with Róisín!

And Róisín, I don’t know if there are restrictions. I do know that the members of Karhun Kansa, who are a registered religious community of Finnish faith, have members who have various professions. But as far as I have understood their teaching is very free and everyone decides what rituals if any they want do, and how. The only source really are a couple of interviews in mainstream media that I have read. It seems some of them have more of a philosophy while others are more focused on the ritual and spiritual side. No one really mentions magic at all, although there are some descriptions of rituals such as honoring a tree in the garden which brings protection to the house. In other words, magic, even if it’s not called that. It seems largely to be a version of Western neo-paganism with some Finnish flavor rather than a direct continuation of earlier folk beliefs. Sadly, the original tradition is lost.

They don’t have anything akin to a priesthood so I don’t know if the question comes up at all. They did have a community leader, but that person was involved in a horrible personal tragedy a few years ago, so I don’t know what the situation in the community is now.

Other than them there are some groups and individuals who are witches, healers, shamans etc more or less tied with traditional Finnish beliefs, or a least using concepts, ideas and language that they think is related. As these people perform in the wider neo-pagan community in their roles, they are not exactly advertising what other professions they may have. I don’t mean that they would be secretive about it, jua that it’s not prominently presented in what material I as an outsider am likely to see. I would imagine that a spiritual and sensitive person would be unable or at least uncomfortable in certain jobs, but I am not aware of any established rules.

This is all fascinating! The only thing I have ever heard about this is when a Wiccan once told me one cannot practice magic and work with computers, as they are opposites. (It's certainly that way in some role-playing games, but it seemed a little odd to me.)

And now... My main Art contribution, one I have threatened this thread with before! It did not come out quite as I intended (for starters, it's nowhere real bright enough), but I had loads of fun working on my first real botanical painting.
