Jitter, I can't believe you described poor Lalli's suffering as sweet.
(And I think that even the canonical, in-comic Lalli can say he knows Gudrun a little? They lived in the same house for a month, after all. They would have shared meals, run into them in the common areas, and so on. By the same token while the time he spent with Reynir's other siblings was a bit shorter, I still believe it was enough to decide exactly how annoying he finds them, and in what way.)

Dmeck, I understand why you feel sad when Emil and Lalli are separated. But such sadness makes for good drama!

Reunion

Onni was worried. Reynir hadn't been over for many days. Sometimes he visited every night, and that was clearly too much. Onni may have given him a piece of his mind the last time he wouldn't stop talking. But, he hadn't told him never to come over! Surely Reynir didn't think that?

Next morning Onni asked Lalli about it. "Have you heard from Reynir recently?"
"Yes"
"Oh, he visits you still?"
"No"
"But, you just said...?"
"No. He came by and said he will not be coming for a while. Then he went, and hasn't visited since."
"Oh, and why is that?"
"So that we wouldn't worry."
"Well, I worried? Why didn't he come tell me?"
"He asked me to let you know, in case you are interested."
"He did? Why didn't you?"
"I just did."
"??"
"As soon as you showed interest, I told you."
Lalli was serious in his confidence he had done exactly as asked.

"But you... I... Never mind. Did he say why he won't be coming?"
"Yes"
"Ok, so... why are you being difficult. Just tell me!"
"I'm not being difficult. I don't know how to deal with things like this."
"What things?"
"Feelings. Other people's feelings."
"Reynir has feelings?"
"Everyone has feelings all the time. Emil has told me."

(muttering) *Mielikki help me...* "So, Reynir is not coming because of something to do with feelings?"
"Yes"
"What kind of feelings?"
"He's sad"
"Sad? Why?"
"Unndís has told him to go."
"Unndís? His wife? Why?"
"Reynir didn't say. Maybe he doesn't know. Such things are hard to understand."
"Ok, so, how did he seem?"
"Sad"
"Lalli!"
"Sad and confused, even more confused than usually. But he wasn't ill or anything."
"Did he... did he tell you not to seek him?"
"No. That would be stupid. I can't seek him anyways. He's the one who can cross the Dream Sea."
"Oh, right. Well, thanks for telling me. Eventually."
"You are welcome."

Onni's dearest friend and companion was sad and troubled. He'd have to try to help somehow. Getting to Iceland in the physical world took a long time, and Onni couldn't walk on the Dream Sea any more than Lalli did. But, there was something he could do. It was draining, but is was possible. He'd done it before, although never as far as to Iceland. Well, there was nothing to it. He had to try.

Beseeching Ilmatar the air mother, Mielikki the keeper of forests, Tapiotar the mother of birds, and others, he set on the long journey. He made his presence as light as possible, for the way was long in the Dreamworld too. And all the better, if he could avoid detection, because there were the... denizens of the Dream Sea.

So, the spectral owl took wing and started towards the spiritual equivalent of west. He flew for what felt like days, even though he knew that not much time passed in the physical reality. Staying almost ethereal was tricky. It made traveling easier, but it also made it harder to keep his spirit focused. Several times his luonto appeared in front of him and called him by name, a couple of times even pecking him with its great beak. "Hold on to yourself, my friend. Don't lose your itse!"

After a long flight, he noticed that the sound of the Dream Sea was different. It sounded like surf. He was coming to someone's shore! And indeed, ahead he saw land at long last. Rolling green hills, in partial shadow. But not fully, there was always sun in Reynir's area. The great owl swooped over the shoreline and into the valley. There was a copse of trees there, and within those trees was a stone outcrop Reynir liked. And indeed, there he was, sitting on his favorite spot.

Finally, he had reached his friend. Reynir was concentrated on something in his hands and didn't notice the arrival of the wisp-thin spectral owl. Onni was exhausted, and he absolutely had to rest now. Still, he couldn't swoop on Reynir, so he spread his wings to slow his descent. He'd land on Reynir's shoulders, nice and gently. Reynir would see he'd come to help.

Itse is one of the three parts of the Finnish soul, in addition to the luonto and henki, which is the life force that keeps the body alive and blood flowing. Itse is the part that makes the person who they are, and that may remain after death (henki leaves at death and luonto goes away, to become someone else's luonto later).

I had some idea for the following parts of the reunion, but I realised I need a timeline for the Toivosaari and Spirit House continuum and so I was working on that. In any case this goes between "One door closes, another opens" here https://ssssforum.com/index.php?topic=1262.180 and "Hypocrisy" earlier in this thread.

Jitter, that is lovely! Onni's concern is so well done (and so in character) and I really enjoy reading your take on the guys' magic powers.
Also, Lalli is in top form here, isn't he?

Oh, I think he is doing a great job! And you did a great job writing it. (You'd think Onni would learn to adapt to such a sensible method of communication. Like, one thing he could say is, "I am always interested in information about Reynir, so in the future please always share it in as much detail as you can." And then he could get a proper scout report after each of Lalli's encounters with Reynir!)

Maybe Onni already tried that, and decided it doesn’t work?

Also this is at least 10 years to the future as Reynir has three children by this time, so I think Lalli has become a bit more fluent in human during his time with Emil and the women. But here he’s confused because feelings and therefore retreats to his old habits.

Dmeck, thanks for writing that! Not hearing what Ensi said to her grandchildren has been bothering me a great deal. (I have my theories, but they change depending on how functional I consider the Hotakainens at any given moment.)
That said...

For this sad prompt, I was thinking about posting the 150-word snippet I wrote in this comment chain for Withering, but I decided to rewrite it as an actual drabble first:

Spoiler: show

Dear Lalli,
I am stepping out to check if the mail has arrived. I ordered you some new boots. I think they will look great on you!
Xxx
Emil

Emil had only just left the room when a window banged open, waking Lalli and letting in the rain. Rainwater immediately soaked the note, washing away much of its contents.

“Dear Lalli,” read Lalli. “I am stepping out to che… at on you!”

By the time Emil returned, shoebox in hand, no trace of Lalli remained. Even the light footprints under the still-open window had been washed away by the downpour.

...hmm, I believe that the last page of this great comic deserves a better Goodbye. I mean, technically speaking, nobody says goodbye in there, do they? I will think about writing a proper piece.

Hi! I'm back! So many great pieces in this thread!

(Yours is also great, Tehta! Horrible, but great! :D  )

And here is my contribution, a brand new, original short, non-SSSS related, non-proofread, eventually non-interesting... You tell me.

Goodbye

Spoiler: show
"All good things eventually come to an end."
"I suppose that also applies for the bad things." Rivi said.
"Humm..." Lani didn't look at him, her gaze fixed on the beautiful landscape. She wanted to enjoy every moment before they left. "Yes, I suppose so. But we don't miss the bad things."
Rivi stayed silent, which was unusual. Lani allowed her sight to drift briefly from those fascinating, snow-topped mountains. He stood still in a relaxed stance, staring at her. She wondered if that was a sign he wanted to go beyond the friendship they developed through the last years. Rivi was... nice, but somehow she couldn't see him as anything but a friend.
Lani checked the timer. They still had a few minutes.
"I'll be back in a moment." She said. Without waiting for a reply she took a few steps, reaching the green spread of small plants that surrounded the remains of the road.
Lani kept walking, feeling the soft ground under her boots. It would be awkward if Rivi decided to take his chances. Six long months of travel awaited them, six months when they would share the common spaces of the Harmaa Alue.
She paused, turning back to see if Rivi was coming after her. Of course he was.
Rivi noticed her looking at him and waved. "We're can't go far, Lani! Just ten minutes to board."
Lani resisted waving back. "It's not like they will leave us behind, right?" She said, turning away to inspect the plants around. They were small, green and looked uncannily like the flowers back home. These had three leaves each, and grew very close, completely covering the field. It was quite common in the area, and she was pretty sure there was already a sample among the many thousands filling the ship's lab.
She looked around, trying to capture all that in her memory. Time to walk back, she thought. The Harmaa seemed close, but that's because it's huge. The grey, almost featureless hull lacked reference points for her eyes to grasp its size, and the fact that it didn't touch the ground at all, floating effortlessly above it like a cloud, didn't help.
"I thought you biologists already collected everything down to the bacteria level." Rivi said, looking at the plants. "Found a new one? Can I help you?"
"No... We scanned this whole area with the drones. I believe there's nothing new to be found. And speaking of nothing, I..." She was about to go straight to the point and tell Rivi she wasn't interested, but then she looked into his eyes and saw something, as if he knew what she was about to say, that he had no chance, but was willing to try anyway. Lani observed the young linguist. He was smart, witty and... kinda cute. Perhaps she shouldn't close that door right now...
Lani rotated to face the distant city, its ruins spread along the lake, framed by the mountains. "I... I really didn't expect to find anything. Just wanted to stay a bit longer."
"You really like this place, don't you? Are you sad?" Rivi asked, genuine concern on his voice.
"There's still so much to see, to discover."
"I feel that too, but we've been here for a year, and collected data that will keep us busy for a while." He lowered himself closer to the ground, touching the small plants. "We may come back. Who knows?"
"There are thousands of planets in this sector, remember? Several of them seem to have much more complex ecological systems."
"But I'm sure very few of them had a bustling industrial civilization that disappeared just centuries ago. And one that resembles so much our own." Rivi's fingers kept jumping from one plant to the next. "We just need to rewind our history a thousand years, or less, to be on their level. Before we found fossils, civs gone millions of years ago, and of course there's the Kehittynyt, so advanced they see no point in talking with us, but this one was, in galactic terms, simultaneous with our own. It's so... unlikely!"
Rivi gestured for her to come closer, pointing at a plant. Lani bent to look closer.
"Oh, that one has four leaves! Well spotted!"
"Look, there's another one here!" His eyes wandered around. "And another! It's a lot easier when we know what to look for."
"If there are so many we may as well take a sample with us." She used her terminal to request a drone, and seconds later the silvery sphere floated over her head. Rivi marked the flower with his laser, and the drone's tools carefully collected the delicate plant intact, together with a bit of soil.
Lani dispatched it back to the lab storage. "Well, I guess we already had our last lucky shot here. We should board the ship before everyone else is inside waiting for us." She was about to add that their colleagues could also start thinking there was more than sample collection going on between them, but managed to keep it for herself.
They walked side by side. There were still a few others around the ramp under the massive bulk of the ship, watching the heavy drones load their delicate equipment.
Inside they chose an observation area, its outer wall completely transparent. From that high point the view over the ruined city, the lake and mountains was even more amazing.
Rivi and Lani stood there in companionable silence. The landscape began to fall away, the shift in view the only clue that the Harmaa Alue was moving.
She broke the silence. "I just wish those people were still around. We could've helped them, I guess, and also learned so much."
Rivi looked at her. "Did I tell you that we managed to decode one of their languages?"
"I saw it on the newsfeed. A great job with so little data!"
The landscape was much smaller now. They could see the whole lake, remains of a few cities becoming barely visible. The ship was accelerating slowly, not wanting to disturb the wild life with a sonic boom. She kept looking. "Was it difficult? Their language?"
"We still have a lot to learn, but no, not particularly hard to grasp. We recovered some sound recordings, so I can even manage to speak a bit."
"Oh! Please, speak a little."
"Ah...Ok. But what?"
"Tell the planet goodbye. For me... for us."
Rivi turned to face the planet. They could barely see the lake now. Far away the ocean reflected the sun. It was beautiful.
He got closer, and she let him. A part of Lani was having a hard time understanding why she never thought about Rivi as more than a workmate before. Maybe it was just an emotional moment, triggered by their departure, however presently she really wished he embraced her, that she could feel all his strong segments around her back. The thought sent a shiver down her spine that reached the tail.
Lani recalled the small plant with four leaves, so rare among the regular, three-leaved ones. Maybe it was a lucky sign... Well, at least for Rivi! She smiled at him.
Rivi smiled back and spoke in a strange language, looking at the planet below.
"Goodbye, Earth."
