Tehta, I'm not sure whether Emil was wise to omit the fact his way to solve the problem is to blow things up.

Is wisdom something Emil is known for? Also, it's true that he doesn't mention explosions, but I did encode a more appropriate secret message into his reply.
(Is my puzzle too obscure? I will put a spoilered hint below.)

Spoiler: show
It's an acrostic. Emil's secret tried-and-true method is FIRE. Hopefully that will help reveal the other two answers.

Ah, very good.

I thought their true answers, all of them (except maybe Mikkel), would be "When in danger or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout."

Hahaa, I wouldn't have noticed that, if you hadn't prompted me to look more! Well done!

Another mystery is why the seiður are not letting Reynir study within his true potential.

26.10.2021 Tried and true

"And today we will focus on staves for directing the movements of animals. Do any of you know some of these staves? Maybe you have seen the "Sheep to not pass" on fenceposts? Ah, Reynir?"
"Yes, did you know that this stave can be modified to stop ghosts?
"Ghosts? My dear child, ghosts are not the subject of this course."
"I know, but these staves are, right? What I'm saying is…"
"Hush now, Reynir. Anybody else?"

***

"And here we must pay attention not only the order in which the elements are drawn but also the direction of the hand when… Yes, Reynir?"
"I have used this sort of galdrastafur! A derivative design protected my Captain from getting trampled by Lake Cows!"
"Lake Cows? I don't think I have heard of this breed before?"
"No, it's not a breed of cattle, they were a herd of beast cows that walked to our camp from a small lake one night in Silent Finland when we…"
"Reynir, would you please concentrate on the matter at hand! We are learning animal husbandry staves here. This is not the time or place for your… stories."

"They are not stories! I'm giving you valuable information about uses of the staves we are learning about."
"I fail to see why anyone in the class would need to know anything about avoiding beasts. Now could you please…"
"But it's important! It saved our lives! I saved our lives!"
"Let's say I believe you, dear. But this is a farm magic class."
"But you won't let me take any other classes!"
"Well, our traditions have served us well, and we see no reason to change them just to accommodate a hothead like yourself. And a male one at that."
"But these galdrastafir can be…"
"The galdrastafir we are teaching are tried and true. I strongly advise anyone, especially you, my child, against messing around with them. Changes to the patterns will likely only render them ineffective, but in some rare cases it could be extremely dangerous! You might end up causing colic in your sheep!"

OH NO NOT SHEEP COLIC.

I think that might actually discourage poor Reynir. But what might work better for him is to learn Finnish-style, from a fellow mage. Someone who's a bit of a renegate. Maybe a Norwegian?

That doesn't sound much like Lalli, either. But Sigrun, Emil, and Reynir, yes, I can picture that very clearly. Maybe Tuuri too.

Hello friends! I've been busy, as I told you, but finished my mother's move to a new house! I haven't had time to check your recent contributions, but will try to do that later.

Meanwhile here's the third episode of our adventure! I hope you like it! It doen't match today's prompt, but surely has some change... :)

An Adventure of Fire and Ice

Episode 3 - Training Ground

Spoiler: show
"I hate it!"
"Cool down, Emil! It's not that bad."
"It's a suicide mission! No one ever returned from the Sunset Sea! Nobody found those mythical lands beyond!"
Lalli ran to check if all windows were closed, and briefly opened the room's door to check if anyone was behind it. Satisfied, he returned and rest his hands on Emil's shoulders. "We've been talking about that since yesterday's audience. You already admitted that's not entirely true. We heard the evidence they presented, the reports about the Sun Chaser being seen on Asshai, that map..."
"The map? Mikkel is a cartographer. He may have just made it up. The rest are tales, legends! Stories told by drunk fishermen to impress! No a single proof!"
"We discussed it before. There's proof, but not exactly convincing."
Emil stared at Lalli's eyes. "Now that's an understatement!"
"Remember, no one ever had the resources we will have. Four, Emil! Four big, brand new ships, the Realm's very best, plus the Braavosi one! All with experienced crews. And commanded by Admiral Asa Ashwood herself! She's a legend, I've heard. If she's willing to go it can't be that risky."
"Yeah, perhaps it isn't... Anyway, there's nothing I can do." Crossing the large room, Emil sat on his bed and reached for his boots, looking defeated.
Lalli followed, sitting next to him. "This can be your great opportunity. You've heard your father. You can become the ruler of the new lands, set your own domain, answering only to the King."
His face became a bit more illuminated. "Yes, I've told you... That part sounds good, being away from the court and the constant gossip... Almost too good to become true." Emil put a hand on Lalli's back and smiled. "Right, I agree that would be good, if we survive."
Lalli smiled back. "We will be together, remember? You, me, Kitty..."
Emil smile became larger. He bent a little closer to Lalli, touching his jet black hair, and muttered. "That's the best part, I suppose."
Lalli's heart beat faster. "Hum... Of course it is."
"I guess there's still some time before my first lesson."
"I'm sure there is."
---
"You're late, prince. I was about to go away."
"My apologies, Lady Sigrun." Said Emil, with a guilty look on his face while he entered the training ground, almost tripping on the steps. "We had a small problem to solve." He said, pointing at Lalli that walked by his side. "Small court things."
The sun was high on the sky, heating the stones of the large walled space between the Red Keep's main wall and the sea. At least there was some wind to refresh them.
All that light made Sigrun's hair a particularly intense shade of red. She was wearing a large white shirt, black pants and grey boots, and holding two wooden swords on her hands. Her eyes were on Emil, evaluating him.
"Yes, I'm sure a prince always has small court thing to do." She glanced at Lalli, and then at Mikkel, that stood behind her, still all in black, under the shadow of a balcony. "But my time is precious, prince. We have many things to arrange before our departure, and two weeks will hardly be enough."
Emil removed his vest, passing it to Lalli. "I have no doubt on that, my lady. Shall we begin?"
"And what about that small dragon hatchling of yours? I was told you're always together."
"Well, many times, but hardly always. Kitty is flying with her mother and a sister, somewhere."
"See, Mikkel? I told that "big bird" we saw far away was a dragon."
"They usually take off at sunset, and fly mostly over the sea. We don't let them all fly at the same time, it scares people."
"Fine. Let's begin. And remember, prince, I only agreed on teaching you the art of water dancing on condition of your full commitment, and that includes being always on time for your lessons. I'm not here to bow and kiss your... boots."
"I'm glad for that, lady Sigrun. And assure it won't be a problem. Also, while we are alone you can call me Emil."
On that precise moment Onni arrived, wearing a lighter version of the Kingsguard armour. "My prince." He bowed slightly towards Emil and Lalli, and turned to face Sigrun and Mikkel. "M'lady, my lord."
Sigrun wasn't impressed by the deference. "What's this? The prince needs a guard for his lessons?"
"These are my orders, m'lady, whenever the lesson can be dangerous, and particularly when there are foreigners present. Orders from the Hand." Onni answered, finding a shadow to remain away from the sun.
"Humpf, I supposed that my agreement with the King implied a higher degree of confidence, but that's fine anyway." Sigrun threw one of the wooden swords to Emil, that failed to grab it. The sword made a loud noise hitting the floor, and Emil, already a bit ashamed, bent to catch it.
There was a faint smile on Sigrun's face, while Lalli, Onni and Mikkel remained impassive.
"Show me what you know, prin... I mean Emil. Come, and try to hit me. Have no mercy!"
Trying to remember all his many lessons on sword-fighting, Emil advanced, sword raised, while Sigrun kept her sword pointing down and waited, looking very relaxed.
High, low, one side, the other... Emil attacked the best he could, forcing Sigrun to step back. He kept swinging the sword, and all she did was parrying his moves. Maybe, he thought, all these stories about water dancers where a bit far fetched, exaggerated to bring fear to anyone considering to fight the Braavosi.
Then Sigrun winked to him and began to dodge every blow, moving with amazing agility. Emil insisted, but she seemed to know where he wanted to strike. Then she advanced, storming him, blow over blow, without stop, and all Emil could do was deflect and move back. He began to sweat and got hits on both legs, shoulder and the other arm.
Sigrun made a lightning fast move that ripped-off Emil's sword, throwing it on the air. She made a twist, grabbed the falling sword and crossed it with her own, having Emil's neck between both blades as if it was a giant scissor ready to cut of his head.
Emil was still trying to understand what just happened when he saw Kitty coming down from the sky. Soon she began flying in circles around them, hissing at Sigrun.
"This is between me and Emil, dragonling! Go away!"
However Kitty insisted, getting closer and closer, until Sigrun dropped one sword. Next instant her hand was grabbing Kitty's tail. The small dragon flapped her wings fiercely, and let out several acute squeaks.
"No! Sigrun, let her go! Don't do that!"
"Don't worry, prince! Just giving it a small lesson on good manners! I'll let it go... Ouch!"
Kitty's still very young, and her bit wasn't strong, but her teeth were sharp, probably piercing Sigrun's glove. She let go the tail and started to run after the dragon, waving the wooden sword. "Your little..." And she said something in The braavosi language that Emil's tutors never bothered teaching to the young prince.
Kitty didn't fly upwards, choosing to keep her distance to the ground, squeaking and dragging Sigrun behind her. Everybody was looking at the comedic show, including Emil. When he finally understood what was happening he began to run all he could after Sigrun, yelling as laud as he could. "STOP! LET HER GO! DON'T FOLLOW!"
But Sigrun didn't listen, or care, and kept running away from them towards the opposite side of the training ground. Emil kept running, but soon a large shadow covered the sun. Kitty squeaked again, and this time got a reply in the shape of a thunderous, guttural roar that filled the air, making everybody stop and look up, except Emil, that kept running towards Sigrun.
A second later a powerful gush of wind hit the ground, raising a cloud of dust on every direction. When Emil managed to reopen his eyes he saw what he feared.
A good part of the training ground was now occupied by an immense winged figure, it's black scales and multiple horns reflecting the sun. The dragon huge head, with a mouth large enough to swallow an ox whole, was turned toward Sigrun, that looked very small in contrast.
Kitty was perched on top of the one horn, longer than a man, while the dragons eyes, red and furious, looked intensely at Sigrun, that dropped her wooden sword and just stood there, paralyzed.
"NOOO! NO! BACK!" Emil managed to reach Sigrun and put himself between the massive dragon and her, raising both arms. He switched to High Valyrian and began to shout at the dragon. "VEMO CKAB, BALERION! TUBI DAOR! DAOR EMILUN! DAOR MORGOTH!*"
Those huge eyes narrowed, looking straight at Emil, that repeated the words, adding others as he pointed at Sigrun. "DEFRIN TARGARYEN! DAORUNI GIMI! PIDSTU! ESH EOSAPOLGIZ!**". The dragon seemed to ponder what to do next for a while, and then let go another deafening roar, together with a breath as hot as if Emil opened one of those ovens used to make bread at the kitchen. He stood his ground the best he could, covering Sigrun, and watched with great relief as those enormous wings unfolded, flapping powerfully as the dragon lift off in the cloudless sky.
Seconds later it was far away, looking just like a big bird. Kitty didn't follow, choosing to land at Lalli's shoulder.
Emil turned to face Sigrun. "We are very lucky! Balerion is on a good day, otherwise we would both be toast by now."
She remained without words. "And never attack a dragon hatchling, particularly is you don't know if the mother is close. They can be very protective, as you saw."
"You saved me!" She managed to say, wide eyed. "You ran to me, and put yourself between me and that thing!" Sigrun bowed, and her voice took a serious tone. "You saved my life, Prince. You and your father already had my loyalty, as I pledged yesterday. Now you have my gratitude, and my promise to pay back in the same coin if your life is at risk."
"Thank you, my lady. Your gratitude is welcomed. I hope you never have to pay your debt, though. Now, let's take a look at that hand and continue our lesson... or not, if you feel too shaken from this unpleasant incident."
Sigrun took the fallen sword and they walked side by side back to the entrance. The skin under the glove showed two small, clean punctures. "Hum, I've had worse." She said, putting the glove back. "Tell me, prince, how did you know it was going to show up?"
"Not an "it", my lady, she. All dragons are female, as they all can lay eggs when they find a suitable match. I believe Kitty just act on her instincts, dragging the threat... I mean you, to a larger area where her mother could see better when she came after the calling."
"And you knew that how?"
"Since childhood Targaryens learn many things about dragons, as you can imagine."
"Yes, I suppose so." Sigrun answered. The way she looked at Emil had somehow changed. There was a hint of admiration, and respect, as she now saw him as a young man and not a spoiled overgrown child. "So Kitty is the daughter of Balerion, the Black Dread itself! Gods, she's huge!"
"Yes, Kitty the red, or Kitherion, her true name, together with her sister, Tessarion, the blue. Both are Balerion's hatchlings. Yet we don't expect them to reach their mother's size."
Lalli, Onni and Mikkel were together, waiting for them. Kitty looked tranquil over Lalli's shoulder.
Discreetly pointing at her, Sigrun muttered to Emil. "Won't she be mad at me?"
Emil smiled. "Who? Kitty? No, I'm sure she just wanted to give you a scare. Not the kind that carry grudges. Just keep in mind to never underestimate dragons. They are not common animals. They are very smart and full of tricks."
Sigrun agreed, nodding towards Kitty, the replied with a soft chirp. She smiled to Emil. "Shall we start again? This time I'll teach you a few simple moves."

Note: I've checked a page about the High Valyrian language, but it doesn't has much info, so I had to make up a few words. The ones in bold are canon for the TV series

*: VEMO CKAB, BALERION! TUBI DAOR! DAOR EMILUN! DAOR MORGOTH!
*: MOVE BACK, BALERION! NOT TODAY! NO COMBAT! NO DEATH!

**: DEFRIN TARGARYEN! DAORUNI GIMI! PIDSTU! ESH EOSAPOLGIZ!
**: TARGARYEN FRIEND! KNOWS NOTHING! STUPID! SHE APOLOGIZES!

I updated my post to include Tuuri. I just could not leave her out. But I will leave poor Onni in peace, because I already know it's back to the wedding tomorrow.

grey: Still very much enjoying this. Emil and Sigrun seem very in character (somewhat arrogant recklessness for her, whining with flashes of heroism for him). And it's always nice to see some background emilalli...

Time for a catch up!
Thanks for the hint, tehta:
Spoiler: solutions • show
I had no idea what an acrostic was, but thanks to your hint, I now get it.
Mikkel: Sarcasm
Tuuri: Enthusiasm
Sigrun: Stabbing
Lalli: 'k

Jitter, a fine doublet.  I wondered if LooNEY's Tall Ships had something to do with the pirate dream.  Arrrr, 'tis me swash proper buckled, matey.
Also le Gasp! Colic! More like Reynir getting colic in his frustration!
I love your drawings, Mirasol - your studies of water are paying off, as is also evident in the lovely imagery for Ensi & Tuuri.  And I so feel that scene of gamers - so very apt.
thegreyarea - you don't have to match prompt, after all. Little bitty Kitty perched on the dragon's horn, meep.
Opaque - ugh, quarantine - yep, you nailed it.

I´m a bit busy right now so I´ll just drop these off here and comment tomorrow. :)

25: Community

Playing music together always gives me a sense of community, so here´s a symphony orchestra with a few extra solists (Harp and French horn) because I still had space (and am for sure not drawing any more violins :'D ).

26: Tried and True

This one´s fanart for another Studio Ghibli movie, Nausicaä of the valley of the wind. Burning the spores of the toxic forest is the tried and true method for getting rid of its poison. Unfortunately that doesn´t solve the problem for good, because it´s not the plants themselves which are poisonous, but the ground they grow in. This was discovered by Nausikaä when she raised some of them herself.

supposedly studying, most likely drawing…

21.10.2021 Glow-up

Back to the wedding, which is getting ridiculous. And making me wish I were a good enough artist to draw several of the attendees...

Spoiler: show
Onni spent the rest of the wedding feast in a daze. He tried to tell himself that it was because of his increasingly enthusiastic drinking, but it was no use. He knew the real reason, which was the shock of discovering that Reynir was not only kind, and helpful out in the field, but also competent at a normal, solid job, and quite ridiculously attractive.

As far as he could remember, anyway: as he ate, he made a concerted effort not to look at Reynir at all. It was just a meal, he kept telling himself. He could get through it.

At least, until they announced the dancing.

“Excuse me, I need the toilet,” said Onni to the whole table before running off into the colourful crowd of dance-enthusiasts who had responded to the announcement. He carefully avoided eye-contact as he made his way through, but still, he soon noticed that one of the gaudily-dressed figures seemed determined to pursue him. He speeded up.

“What the hell, Onni?”

The familiar voice, speaking a familiar Finnish phrase, made him stumble. He turned around.

“Why are you running away?” asked Lalli, frowning: another familiar detail, but that is where all familiarity ended.

The Lalli Onni knew wore practically-cut tunics the colour of dirt, or shadow, or (occasionally) snow. This Lalli, meanwhile, was dressed in something voluminous and iridescent in sea-green, held in at the waist by a gold-embroidered sash. It was cut very dramatically, too, in a way that almost bared one of his shoulders. Even his hair looked weirdly smooth and shiny.

“What--” Onni couldn’t stop staring: was there something, some sort of dark smudge, around his cousin’s eyes? “I thought you were planning to dress as a tree?”

“I was planning to camouflage myself. After careful thought, I decided that a tree would stand out. This is much more appropriate.”

“But how did you manage to find such a thing?”

“It’s Emil’s. He packed three sets of clothes to choose from. So, he encouraged me to take one, to make his choice easier.”

Now that Onni had spent some time inspecting the outfit, the explanation made sense. “Well, it’s the wrong size. And what’s with your… face?”

“Oh, Mikkel did that. And my hair.” Lalli shrugged, his tunic slipping further off his shoulder. “It amused him.”

“Yes, he made fun of my clothes, too.” By doing a double-take, staring, and then asking Onni how many hearts he was planning to break. “Anyway, have fun. I am leaving now.”

“What? Without saying goodbye to your date? Isn’t that rude?”

“What date?” asked Onni, even as understanding dawned. “Reynir is not my date!”

“But you’re sitting at a date table together.”

“As friends… or friendly acquaintances, at least. The idea of us dating is absurd. He’s far too…” Young? Likeable? Attractive? No, naming these reasons out loud would be far too humiliating. “Seriously, nobody but you could think us a good match.”

“Oh, I don’t.” Lalli scowled. “It’s all him. He’s always coming by my haven, talking about how dreamy you are, with your sad, aloof air, and how oblivious, or asking me about your likes and dislikes… I was hoping this date would put an end to it. Can’t you try to make it work? He’s not that bad, you know.”

Art art art!

Opaque: Quarantine. I suppose most of us know the feeling of waking up to yet another day inside. Sigrun doesn't seem enthused. Reynir might be starting yoga?

wave: I am cringing in horror. Hair grows back so slowly! But look at those angelic faces, and not-at-all-forced grins... Maybe I should risk it?

Mirasol: Also a Studio Ghibli fan (I mean, I guess almost everyone is! I have been to the museum a couple of times, though) and loving the plantlife in the Nausicaa picture. Also, the little instruments. They remind me of dollhouse miniatures, which I always find very satisfying to look at.

Glow up

”Help! Michael! Emergency!”
Emile was running towards Props and Costumes, cradling something black in his arms. Michael was immediately ready to assist. “Who here needs attention?”
“Lawrence’s costume! You have to fix it!” Emile was spreading the black fabric between his hands, revealing a nasty tear.
“I see. I will dedicate my time and effort to repairing this. It must have been a wild and feral stunt to have caused this to happen.” Michael took charge of the situation. Firstly he ripped out a decorative fringe.
“What! You didn’t even try!” Emile was shocked.
“Trying isn’t always a beneficial course of action.”
“I tried so hard! A lot! Earlier!”

The remaining garment was still torn. “I think it needs a stitch.”
“It may need more than one. I hope you don’t mind a couple of wrinkles from this. Stitchwork isn’t one of my strongest suits.” Michael set to work nevertheless.

“And this is finished”
“So, you were not kidding. You suck at stitches.” Emile was shocked.
“They serve their purpose regardless.”

***

The singers’ dressing area was a chaos. Lawrence was hiding under Emile’s jacket, scratching his neck furiously and hissing. His costume was wrinkled on the floor. “Come on, you’ll be late soon!” Lucky was trying to get Lawrence back to operational state.
“He can’t wear it. It itches his neck!” Emile was wringing his hands quite theatrically. He had already spent a while trying to get Lawrence into his costume.

Suddenly Rowan, normally so friendly, was yelling at Lawrence. “How can you just sit here and do nothing and not go insane! Because I am! I can’t go out there and sing your part! Don’t you understand that you’re the only one who can!”
Now Lawrence was looking livid, pretty much like he was about to bite Rowan. Emile was also about to join the ruckus, when Lucky stepped in to fix the situation.

“Okay, let’s all calm down and not act insane?” She grabbed Lawrence’s black turtleneck, cut the neck part loose and gave it to Emile. “Make him wear this under the costume, it will shield his skin against the stitches”.
“Oh, yeah, that might work!”

Emile talked Lawrence into it. He promised the extra fabric didn’t show, and he made Lawrence’s hair and make up extra fabulous. “I swear, no one will notice, everyone will be looking at you, not your costume!”

And he was right. Lawrence was practically sparkling on the stage.
“I may have saved the immediate situation, but Emile really gave him some extra glow up!”
What a most best team!
