Because Ensi is awesome, I decided to combine birth and death into one that's all for her.

Ooh, it's tomorrow now.

Opaque: Yes, Ensi is awesome, and I love this picture, from the Sauna birth through the beautiful forest to the release from the Kade.

wave: The death card is very clever, the way it works in reverse.  And the birth comic is hilarious. Crazy Tuuli, sure, but also anxious Saku... And I wonder how different Ensi might have been, with an Italian name.

Jitter: another true Haiku! And beautiful leaves. (Also, Reynir WILL get to see palm trees in any headcanon I develop for him.)

Mirasol: I love both pics, although I do not know the game well. And I do like the colours on the hatching picture! And the furniture, especially the lamp.

Day 23 - Right In Front of Your Nose - Aksel Eide & Sigrun Larsen have been friends for awhile, but it takes an apocalypse to make them see one another in a new light.

I had asked on Discord whom I should kill horribly, and the eventual suggestion was 'Sigrun, in a way that keeps her out of Valhalla. For example, by food-poisoning caused by Mikkel's cooking'.
A warrior dying from a poisoned dish prepared by a faithless Dane? I suspect that some of the einherjar would vote "come on in already" nonetheless ...

How about getting shipwrecked in icy waters, with not even a shark around to mock-fight, the only nearby land being a small island that is an active volcano so that you have warm water nearby and can momentarily stand on semi-cooled-off crust but need to stay awake at all times to step out of the way of stuff that'd happily kill you in a not-an-actual-opponent way?

And I wonder how different Ensi might have been, with an Italian name.

23.10.2021 Right in Front of Your Nose

My contribution is somewhat in the same spirit as wave's, but I had planned for that ahead of time! It's the continuation of Onni's wedding adventures. I hope he likes them better than yesterday's grief and drama. (And no, it's not all just an enchantment brought on by the runes! Inside or out, they do not work on the tunic's wearer...)

But oof, I am running out of steam, a little! I wanted to trim this down--I can see that some parts need it--but even writing it took way longer than expected. It's been tough, poking at a new idea every day or two. I think it's made me a faster writer, overall, but I worry about the quality.

Reactions tomorrow, as before.

Spoiler: show
“I am so sorry about that,” said Reynir, as he led Onni around the edge of the field where the wedding feast was taking place. “I have never worn this tunic, myself, so I had not realized how the runes might affect random strangers.”

“Never mind.” Onni found he could not be truly angry with his rescuer. “It must be an easy mistake to make. Don’t the runes for love and the ones for luck look very similar?”

“Not very.” Reynir tugged on his braid. “But never mind, I have an idea! Why don’t you turn the tunic inside out? That way, the… love-runes… will at least be hidden, and might lose their power.”

“Worth trying.” Onni reached for the tunic’s hem.

“No, no, hold on! Let’s find somewhere more private!”

Onni did not understand the fuss. (Surely, nobody would care if he went shirtless for a few seconds? At least, not once the runes were out of the picture?) Still, his agreeable mood persisted, so he spent some time helping Reynir look for suitable cover. This being Iceland, all they found was low shrubs; in the end, Reynir elected to act as a screen while Onni changed. The whole incident seemed to fluster him a great deal. He had to take a moment before leading Onni to his real assigned seat.

Which turned out to be at the bridesmaids’ table.

Onni should probably have expected this, given how Reynir was dressed, but he could not help feeling unworthy of such an important spot. Once he sat down, however, things got much better. He was welcomed, but only in a vague, friendly way: the bridesmaids were far too busy discussing the bride, and the wedding, to ask him any personal questions. Sitting in calm silence and hearing others’ cheerful gossip wash over him was not unpleasant.

After a long, peaceful while, he became aware of another conversation: two of the bridesmaid’s dates were discussing the practicalities of sheep-rearing. Hearing such plain, fact-based talk proved another source of comfort, one Onni had not known he needed. After a while, he felt comfortable enough to join in, asking a few basic questions, and listening to the sensible answers.

And then, Reynir joined in.

Hearing his voice, Onni felt a mixture of emotions. Some pleasure--caused, no doubt, by the gratitude he still felt over his earlier rescue--and some anxiety that his moment of social comfort was about to end. To his surprise, however, the conversation stayed on-topic. Reynir stated a few opinions, which were received with courtesy: no, with appreciation, even respect. It seemed that a couple of Reynir’s sheep had been the envy of the county fair, and his best ram was in great demand.

It made sense, of course. Sheep husbandry was Reynir’s actual job: he had been a mage for about as long as Onni had been a world traveller. So why was the fact that he was at least as competent as the other farmers such a surprise? Was it because he was so much better-looking?

Now where had that thought come from? Onni reached for a drink.

Reverend Mother Jitter, that's one nightmarish internal (should I say infernal?) monologue inside the Kade. I really hope it wasn't like that for over a decade...

Coming back to this:

I think probably not. Kade-enslaved Ensi didn't seem to know who she herself was, or who anyone else was. When Tuuri broke her soul out of the Kade, Ensi-soul tried to get back into it; and showed no sign of recognizing Tuuri, Onni, or Lalli until the Swan shook her loose the rest of the way.

(That was still an impressive work by Jitter, though.)

Right in front of your nose

She was felt equal parts fabulous and empty. The Opening Night had been a success. All of the main singers had been wonderful, and the audience had been raptured. Like they had been transported to another world! She was sure that when Rowan descended from the tree to Owen's open arms, there wasn't a dry eye in the entire auditorium. Owen himself had looked ready to burst into tears. The man was a great talent, no matter how much he tried to claim otherwise. And he and Rowan really worked well together.

Now the stage lights were out, and the audience were finding their way out of the theatre. Owen and Rowan were still holding hands after the numerous rounds of bows they had taken and looked a bit like they had forgotten the play was over. Lawrence was nowhere to be seen, although she was sure Emile was helping him unwind.

She wanted to, no, needed to celebrate this triumph, but all of the stars were occupied. What to do? She was already considering whether it would be too cruel to disrupt Owen and Rowan's moment, when her staff arrived at the backstage area, with flowers and champagne. Oh, of course! She did have all the most best company!

Aw, so many nice contributions!  Have I told you all yet how much I appreciate all of you coming along for this ride with me?  Like tehta, I feel the pressure of producing just about every day as the month goes on, but it is part of the original point.  Much like NaNoWriMo, it's supposed to help instill a realisation that we can fit creativity into our busy daily lives, and possibly start a healthy new habit.
Spoiler: whining moi moi moi • show
Personally, this is the time of the month when I get the blahs, too, because I start spending more time & energy on the pictures and get frustrated when they get pretty much ignored on social media when I share them.  I usually stay within the realm of cartoony jokes, because when I try to put in layers of meaning and reference distilled into a detail, it doesn't connect with anyone outside my own head. I then get depressed because a pisstake I doodled in literally 30 seconds is better-received. *raises hand* Hi, I'm wavewright62, and I am an affirmation junkie.
*ahem*

So: affirmation for everybody!
I am really enjoying the ongoing stories of both the opera and the wedding.  Such shenanigans!
Jitter, you can be counted upon to bring the spirit of nature into your haiku - this is exactly right.
tehta, the angst when the spoilered spoilered, and Lalli then spoilered too!  But not their mothers?  hmmm
Opaque, encompassing both birth and death in one concise, beautifully laid out piece! *chef's kiss* The palette suits the image well.
Mirasol, going lineless brings a really nice result in your work, even if it does take longer?  You brought the two options into lovely realisation, and I love their colours and the composition. Also, chicken feet on the furniture?  LOVE it!
Last - JoB, you got the reference! Huzzah! (Veeti was indeed inspired by his handheld game, at least for Mario.)

Wavewright, that cute drawing of Aksel and Sigrun gave me some inspiration for the right in front of your nose prompt. That scene is great.

I wanted the poem to be nonspecific but it's about a video game couple from one of the Harvest Moon games Rick and Karen.

Old Friend
(Right in front of your nose)

Sitting here, side by side, on a crisp clear morning
We talk, as always. Our eyes meet with no warning.
He has matured over the years since we were young
And now looking into his eyes my heart is strung

Today just like every other in this small town
We sit on our bench, as always, and goof aroun'
But our time is short and we begin our work day
I look as he walks away wishing he could stay

Someday down the road I knew I would find someone
Who knew that my childhood friend would be the one
That sudden spark as we both sat there together
The thought of romance left me light as a feather

What I feel now is stronger than just a mere whim
I never knew how deep my feelings were for him
Next time I see him. I will tell him at our place
It turns out, my love was right in front of my face

Once again, it's tomorrow...

wave: I already mentioned your fence drawing, but here I would like to say that it's very well done. A small casual moment, with both of them enjoying the closeness... I also feel a strong sense of what the weather is like, because of the combination of what they wear and how they leave their heads uncovered.

Regarding the feedback thing, I feel you! As a writer, I know that it's never the pieces one really works at that get the feedback. I write plenty of silly one-offs and I can definitely see the difference. (And, actually, feedback is another Yoinktober problem, for me: there are so many pieces that it's hard to find the time to be thoughtful about each one. I knoe some of my comments have been very hasty, and I apologize.) I will try to do better, all round.

Opaque: A very cute poem. I don't know the game, but I read it as a companion to the pic above and it also worked quite well...

Jitter: A thrilling conclusion! Or is it? I hope Ms Victoria enjoys the staff that showed up in her room (I will see myself out).

JoB: I laughed at the mushroom reference. (Incidentally, I went mushroom picking in Italy on Friday, and to my disappointment nobody stomped on anything.) But the volcano thing is just cruel.

Opaque, I’m not sure whether I have commented on all of your poems, but they are impressive! They convey so much feeling in such elegant ways. (In the Right in front of my nose there is a small typo on the last stanza, I think you meant knew instead of new?) And I am continually amazed at the way you chur ot both great art and poetry!

Wave, can I join your club too? Oh the sweet affirmation! I don’t need it, I could easily stop at any time! I just don’t want to, in a completely rational an composed way… More, please!

At least I feel it may be healthier for us to crave for “likes” for something we create rather than how sexy we look in photos*. Now for some people getting the best photos of themselves is a creative effort akin to performative art, and as long as they enjoy it, I have absolutely nothing against it. But when it becomes a pressure, that you have to get Insta likes, it is not good for the person or for their community.

* which, incidentally, is not at all, in my case

Thank you for the heads up on my misspelling on the poem. I fixed it.

Also, elegant? Hehe, now that's a word that has never been used to describe me or anything I do. I never knew how fun it is to construct poems and I'm having so much fun writing them. Thank you for the kind words y'all have given me regarding my art. There have been so many inspiring post on this thread. The stories, the art, the pictures are all fantastic!

Day 24 - Water - a change of pace for me, with a nod toward the spooky season

Water underneath
Body of water leaching water of body
underneath water

Edit:  I like this better:
