I have mixed feelings about Ro. Her intro basically set her up as a villain: Ruthless and sadistic, cruel to her comrades and far beyond cruel to her enemies, delighting in bloodshed. (Well, maybe not "delight"; she doesn't strike me as prone to happiness.)

And then... I'd better spoiler-tag it, just in case.
Spoiler: show
And then we found out she was related to Dal. Holy fluffing fuzzballs, that's setting up a conflict. And yeah, conflict happened.

And then I got to the flashback and saw how much of Ro's sadism ("murder lessons" etc.) was, at least initially, bravado that melted away the first time she faced an actual threat. Saw how she cared for her sister. Saw how she had to cut off Dal's leg to save her, and how much it pained her to do so.

And then she was killed. And I don't sympathize in the slightest with what she did after her death warrant was sealed, but up to that point? Yeah, she was on the...less awful end of that fight. She straight-up got revenge murdered and I guess I shouldn't have expected a strong moral compass from the guy whose entire life goal is to amass huge amounts of wealth by whatever means necessary in order to get into not-heaven. But heck, I would have expected him to respect his best friend's fervent request to not murder her sister. But, again, she then also revenge-murdered her murderer so... Call it even?

And then, after being dead, she wakes up. Now an ash-breather. Now, apparently, rescued or revived by her most hated enemies, a literal death cult. Somehow. Now totally out of her element, stripped of all her weapons and armor and even the clothes off her back, not to mention a huge part of her sense of identity.

So, all in all, as huge a jerk as she is, I still can't help but feel bad for her.

Honestly part of me enjoys reading stories like this with characters who.... kinda suck as people, for reasons that are somewhat understandable but still lead to them doing things that make you go oh nooo eugh why....

I guess maybe because it feels human and maybe because it's interesting at the start to wonder how their characters are going to develop and (hopefully) grow and change.

Obviously this can go too far, though - there are definitely stories where people are unreasonably awful to each other all the time to the point where it's just unrealistic and unpleasant. But it makes for interesting characters in moderation.

@Linebyline , that's a great summary!

I need to reread the comic to comment further but I will say this in agreement with @Keep Looking : love or hate some of these characters, but none (or nearly none) of them are flat! And their stories unfold over time.

Maybe Rising Sand has posted a potential update schedule on their socials somewhere - I haven't looked very carefully, but I am hoping to see the story go forward soon!

Thanks, @Linebyline !

The Rising Sand creators have set the bar so high for their art - it looks really labor intensive.

There's a good reason why comics and animation - any art that needs to be done fast - naturally tends toward being simple and abstract. Expecting an artist to paint 100 Vermeers in less than a month is just not something that many artists can do, if any! So the art gets simpler so that the volume can happen.

But Rising Sand pushes that detail - it's among the most "polished" web comics I've seen. And Rising Sand looks like a 2-person team; the big commercial comics companies have at least a half-dozen people dedicated to a project, and add to that editing and support staff at the corporate level to help speed things along. That's a LOT of work for 2 people.

Minna is extraordinary in her ability to create quickly, and even her art style simplified in the later pages of SSSS. And the Rising Sand folks are not too shabby either, given the level of detail they're trying to maintain.

My hat's off to the web comics creators that are slogging in the trenches, often as a side-hustle, bringing dreams to life.

Alright folks - my comic of the month for June is

First page
Latest page

I think Sleepless Domain has been mentioned once or twice on the forum before, but it definitely deserves its own spotlight!

Sleepless Domain is a comic about magical girls fighting to protect the magically shielded city they live in from the monsters that attack it every night, and solve the mystery that is seeming to threaten their unusual home's very existence. It is also a story about grief, trauma, and the cost of being a magical fighter in a world with real consequences. There's also friendship! Cool character designs! Queer characters and relationships (happy pride month btw!)!

It is also the only still-updating webcomic I have managed to get my girlfriend invested in.

Sleepless Domain is definitely pg-13: no major gore, nudity or other nsfw content, which is good since it is a comic with fairly young teenage characters. However, content warnings can be given for moderately intense depictions of character deaths, grief and depression as well as non-graphic character injury.

I hope people check it out (or catch up / reread if you've read it already!).

I'm glad you recommended Sleepless Domain, because if someone didn't, I was going to have to. Cagle is good, y'all.

I should probably point out that this comic will punch you hard in the feels after a couple chapters.

I like sleepless Domain.  It has a very Animie feel to it.

Spoiler: show
That purple thing is really creepy, and the yellow thing reminds me of a Pokemon :)

You know, it's been a while since we've seen the guy and his rat. I wonder what they're up to.

Re. the spooky purple being and the developments of the last couple chapters...
Spoiler: show
I wonder if the TV interview is going to include some revelations re. Tessa's current deal. I mean, Undyne hasn't seen Goops since that happened, and Kokoro hadn't seen her before, so I'm wondering if Kokoro is just going to describe Goops assuming that's what she always looked like, and what Undyne's reaction is going to be.

I managed to catch up and wow.  There are all kinds of twists and turns here.
Spoiler: show

I am surprised/unhappy Tessa gave into Goops.  It seemed to me she wanted back her magic so much, she was will to deal with someone/something that so far seems evil.  Though it did tell her that it helped kill her team mates...and she still let it possess her.  I think that Goops may take Tessa over completely. It just wanted her capacity for magic.. There is definitely pieces missing on what is really happening.

When Vedeka was touched by the monster, it looks like people suffering (Kinda reminded me of the red tide people in Phantomarine)

Anemone is hard to figure out.  I think she creates the "barriers" to the buildings when it is hunt time.. I am confused if she was in that suspended animation mode for a long time, or only at night.  I know she appeared in "ghost" form to Tessa (I can't remember, but maybe to Undine also)

Then we have the pokemon type thing.  I am unsure if that is the dream girl or Anemone now.

A little origin story would be helpful :)

There is a lot to talk about!!

Good story tho..
