Now this is hardly a dilemma. The headmistress epitomizes the infuriating-ness of the Seiđ. How can they turn their back to what’s left of the world?

Since at least in the styles of magic most familiar to me the energy that fuels magic comes out of the Land, a mage has an obligation to care for the earth, so farm magic is pretty important, being designed to care for the basis of mage’s power. That sort is for hunter/gatherer/farmer cultures.  But some people just have different skills, and draw their power from other sources. In our-world magic there has always been a disparity and sometimes actual conflict between academic magic and practical magic. I guess that would also be so in the Minnaverse? Though Minna seems to have merged at least two traditional styles of Finnish magic, mostly the earlier shamanic tradition with the later ‘wiseman’ tradition, which contained a lot more booklearning and produced mages with more elements in common with Western magic in the style of John Dee or Michael Scot.

Oh don’t get me wrong, given the history of famine I am certain farm magic is very respected in addition to being of utmost importance. Within Iceland, it is probably almost always more likely that some people will starve than that some people will be attacked (at least by grosslings, and Iceland doesn’t have land animals, by humans, I don’t know). But the self-important style and belittling of others (especially evidenced by the info pages about other nationalities) is what makes them irritating.

I’m sure not all of the Icelandic mages are like this, but what little we saw of the Academy, it seemed the Seiđ there appeared to have a bit of a holier than thou thinking.

Yeah, some people really care about just being on top of their system, whatever the system is.
