Title: Big Tenth - Planning and Organization for SSSS' Tenth Anniversary
Post by: LooNEY_DAC on August 10, 2023, 04:59:05 PM
We have just under twelve weeks until the tenth anniversary of that first intriguing cover page (http://sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=1), the beginning of our journey into the Silent World with a handful (or so) of lovable weirdos and the cat they picked up along the way; so, how do we intend to celebrate it?

This thread is where we can throw everything and anything against the wall to see what we want to do; anybody can make suggestions or comment on suggestions. Let's get cracking!

I am happy to report that the mods are discussing events, and I for one am very excited.

Could I be getting back my fanwork mojo? We shall see, yes we shall

Many thanks to L00NEY for giving us all the heads-up!

Suggestions that I've come up with include an extension of YoinkTober along themes of 10

Be careful what you wish for.
In other news, did you know that the Forum auto-censors certain words?  Why 'ducks' would be your reaction is a biff tad suspect, with that knowledge in hand...

In ages past, there were virtual hang-outs to watch movies together or just chat, as anniversary or New Year's events. 1 November is a Wednesday, though, so probably not a viable date to have such an event.  Just brainstorming a leetle bit.

There is a live-chat channel in the SSSS Discord, which these days has evolved even as we have.  There are some of us who are present in both media.  I can perhaps open a topic in the SSSS discussion channel there, see if there's any appetite for cross-pollination.

Spoiler: mebbe not • show
(I suspect not, as the visceral denigration of Minna is stronger there.)

I'm pretty sure that the verb you're thinking of is transitive and thus would require an object. Grammar-wise, at the very least. :P

But yes, I remember that feature, as well as my repeatedly (https://ssssforum.com/index.php?topic=49.msg7483#msg7483) making fun (https://ssssforum.com/index.php?topic=10.msg15400#msg15400) of how easy (https://ssssforum.com/index.php?topic=6.msg172979#msg172979) it is to circumvent. (Note that the censor patrols the previews of postings already, so you can see the final result before posting proper.) But I suppose I could "Bert (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duck_and_cover#/media/File:Bert2.png)(s)" instead to remove the ambiguity ...

 :sigrun:

It occurs to me that I can set up the Forum's polling feature to get a challenge going, in heats of 1-3 weeks or so (depending on number of nominations), leading to a final boss challenge on the day.
Spoiler: show
I admit I stole this idea off tumblr. Sue me.  Should I run this on tumblr as well?  Considering it.

I pledge that I will assemble and kick-off a favourite character challenge this weekend. I will be including a fairly comprehensive character set, but if there is a *minor* character that you really want to champion, drop me a direct message in the next day or two, don't post it here.

Some other topics that would work for this sort of thing:
Favourite page (specifically SSSS)
How should it have gone? (no abuse)
[open to suggestions...]

Nominations for additional challenges can be posted below, or via direct message to me.

Right-o! We have begun the SSSS Character Smackdown (https://ssssforum.com/index.php?board=31.0), the first of a series of challenge brackets to take us to the Big 10th Anniversary!
First off the rank was the Gods & Monsters round, pitting various trolls and other supernatural beings against one another.  Still to come, brackets for the crew, their wider family members, and minor characters!
Bring on the game!

Wow, Wave, off to a great start!

Are we allowed to comment on the smackdown pairs under the poll?

Absolutely!

In fact, feel free to sling some propaganda for your own choices.

New set of polls has dropped over in the SSSS Character Smackdown child board - face-off of the minor characters!  A simple solution to a simple problem.

I forgot to post that the members of the wider family now have their first round in progress - but most of you have already figureds that out.

I should have stats on the Gods & Monsters round this weekend, including which ones will advance to the next round.

Never fear, the crew & HQ will get their chance, too, although I am planning on introducing them against the Round 2 or 3 winners, rather than eliminating them against each other this soon in the piece.

Please comment - good idea? Or make them duke it out in their own bracket first?  It's a smaller bracket to start with.

I can't see us having them duke it our first.  We'd vote for our team members if they went against anything..and voting against them head to head would be hard for me to decide..

I´m a little bit lost as to what is happening right now (just returned from vacation, what month is it? xD), but I heard YoinkTober in here so you have my attention.

Are we voting for favorite characters? I read this thread and had a look at the new board but I´m still a little confused... Was there some announcement post or something you could point me to?

Spoiler: show
Also please stop me if I´m annoying you with YoinkTober... ;_;

Mirasol, each new thread on the child board is a poll, where you choose which of two alternatives you prefer. The first ones are closed now, but there’s lot to vote now and in the coming weeks!

Yes, indeedy-do - Round 2 of Gods & m0nSTeRs is up (https://ssssforum.com/index.php?board=31.0), and I'll be queueing up Round 2 of Minor Characters soon!

And have no fear all, I envision an occasion where we will be left with our valiant crew pitted against one another (and I will be as hard-pressed as the rest of you how to vote)!  Emil v Lalli in the Final? Sigrun v Lalli? Onni v Tuuri? Mikkel v Reynir? *shudder*

Orrrr,...will the likes of Sleipnope or the Cat-Tank advance to the final rounds, trouncing the crew to get there?

Edit:  heya, Round 2 of Minor Characters is up, too!. muhuHAHAHAHA

Sounds fun, I´ll check it out! :)

Will prologue-characters also be a category? Or are they under minor characters?

EDIT: Maybe I should read the threads first before opening my mouth and see that they have a poll-category...  :-[

Many of the Prologue characters fall within the All in the Family bracket - Round 2 for that is going to drop this weekend!

The polling contnues, but after Round 2, all of the bracket winners get thrown into the Round 3 - Group of 16 to determine which 8 will go up against THE CREW, woot!

NB - I can't make the numbers work to include the HQ Quartet, I goofed a bit with the initial planning.  Is anybody really sad, waiting for your chance to vote for Siv, Taru, Trond or Torbjorn?  Should I run some 3-way polls amongst Round 3? What do you think?

They're organizers who opted to physically stay away from the battlegrounds, acting out of the background, and pretty shady ones at that. I say that for every round starting with #3, take (whatever's left of) The Quartet and assign each of them to a random "normal" survivor going into that round for a tag team.
(Yes, that includes pairing them with grosslings - c'mon, Siv, that's not too far from your former job - and, by chance, assigning several of them to the same grossling / main character, for extra unfairness. >:D )

Oh heck it's been that long? I was just re-reading the comic and noticed LooNEY_DAC's comment and had to come take a look at the forum after a loooooong while, it's nice to be back (to lurk lol)!

I think I'll make some fanart for the occasion, it's been an equally long time since I've done that :D

As per your suggestion, I have sprinkled the 4 HQ personnel into the Melee Round as a 3rd option. In the early polling, most of them are getting the odd vote, and as at this writing Trond is actually leading his.  So it's possible at least one of them will advance to the Group of 16 round against the crew.

So for starters, that will be the launch date of the finals of the SSSS Character Smackdown.

It will be just after the YoinkTober challenge finishes, too.  We don't have a specific prompt for the 1st, but I can envision:
:tuuri:  giving love to / posting reviews of the YoinkTober entries,
:onni:  posting one you couldn't finish in time or otherwise missed,
:emil:  using the finals of the character challenge as a prompt for a new work,
 :lalli:  panel redraw,
 :mikkel:  I'm open to suggestions...

The polls are set up for the quarterfinals of the SSSS Smackdown Challenge, and to be honest I haven't made up my mind who to vote for.  There are no easy choices here, I reckon.  Fun? Go check it out and have your say. (https://ssssforum.com/index.php?board=31.0)
