Movits! - Äppelknyckarjazz (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8fIVTH0TiM)
What are you listening to? This is where you can post links to songs, and talk about the music you like.
I'll start us off. This is one of my favorite songs, so I'll just post this here!
Helios - Halving The Compass (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sk1q6W0zdrI)
Does anyone else listen to fan made music? Lately I have been listening to Miracle of Sound (https://www.youtube.com/user/miracleofsound), who mainly makes songs about videogames.
Also, I like this Dark Souls song even if it's not my type of music: Lordvessel by Tanooki Suit (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5N7J802QzP4)
Sure do. My favourite is both of the concept albums by the Protomen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpSHC1dqX1o). They're both stories about the mega-man world, but they're great 80's style rock. I could imagine Meat Loaf or Queen playing most of these songs.
Does anyone listen metal? More specifically folk metal? Well if you don't, then now is time to try it:
Turisas-The March of the Varangian guard (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZ9OAe-aX7s)
Turisas - The Bosphorus Freezes Over (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrHPcEpNKac)
Name of the song looked so strange that I had to click it. It's not my cup of tea, but it was ok. BTW, how popular that band is? Million views seems much, or at least it would be much for a Finnish band.
Yay, so I'm not the only one to listen to metal! I can't say I listen to folk metal specifically (more like symphonic and heavy metal), but I really liked those two songs, thanks!
... Hehe in real life when I say that I like metal I get so many Looks.
Seems to be relatively popular? They've released 3 albums since 2007 and I know one of their songs was featured on a popular American talk show, which may explain the high number of views.
Thank you for more info! Are you Swedish yourself? If so, can you tell what's really popular in Sweden now?
You mean traditional heavy metal? Only symphonic metal bands I have listened to are Nightwish and Within Temptation. Can you recommend something you listen to me?
I'm not complete metal geek, who knows everything about all metal subgernes and bands. But I do enjoy lot of different bands from different subgernes. And I love folk music so folk metal is especially close to my heart.
Oh gosh no, I just happen to listen to a lot of Nordic music (It started with Mew way back in high school and went on from there). Seems like whenever I find a band I really like they turn out to be from there.
I'm originally from Russia but I've lived in Canada for about 14 years now.
I'm absolutely not a metal geek either. I just like to listen to it quite often (but then again I never care about the genre of music. Classical, jazz, metal, rock, I just listen to it), and I'm the only one in my immediate circle of acquaintances.
Hmm, I really like Nightwish, but it seems you've already gotten to them. Blind Guardian and Therion are two bands I particularly like.
I have never understood why genres are so important to so many people. I'm not saying that it's bad, but it just is something that I don't myself understand. I usually don't know what genre I'm listening to, so all music seems equal to me. Good music is good, no matter what.
It's kind of funny when you say that nobody close to you cares about metal. It's quite different here. :D The ones who have never listened to metal are in minority.
That's cool too. I don't know if this is rude to ask, but do you feel more Russian or Canadian? Equals?
Kind of odd that you end up liking Nordic music that much. I do listen to bands outside of Finland, but usually I like only, say, 3-4 songs per band. With Finnish bands it's different, they just "speak" more to me and I'm more likely to like their whole discography.
I can't recall any Canadian music. But there is some random Russian songs I like. My mother listens to Vladimir Vysotskij and I do like some of his songs. Have you noticed big differences between Russian, Nordic and Canadian music? There must be some.
Anyway, recommend something. :) It doesn't matter if it's Russian, Nordic or Canadian. All new music is exciting!
I don't listen to that much Russian music, mostly bands that my mom liked when I was growing up, which I guess would fall into "Classic Rock" by now?
Thanks for introducing me to Helios! I have been listening through that album, loving everything.I've never had anyone take to Helios before, this is kind of awesome. I honestly think that Halving the Compass and Paper Tiger are some of the most well put together songs ever made. Post-rock became one of my favorite genres, after finding him. You might also like Tycho (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyhPl1o-g9E).
I mostly listen game music and other instrumental BGMs, but my absolute favorite song right now is the main theme from How to Train your Dragon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fh_doTIrFRo).
I know this is almost like saying I'm not actually a Finn after all, but I've never gotten the hang on metal music. Thanks for the link to Plumbo though Fenris, I liked that. Isn't Ola Nordmann a kind of personification of Norway, the same way we have Suomi-neito?Yeah, Ola Nordmann is both used as a kind of national personification and can also describe the 'average joe' (Kari Nordmann is a feminine form), with Nordmann literally meaning Norwegian. The song mostly describes Norwegian self-stereotypes (wanderlust, technophilia, loving the sea and such).
Eich - regarding De Hofnar - Zonnestraal ... it's Dutch :D De Hofnar means The Court Jester, and Zonnestraal means sunbeam.Huh, I thought Hofnar sounded like a funny word...
Haha :)*Sigh* I love that song. It sounds quite a bit like the intro theme to Downton Abbey, which is a good thing.
No problem at all! And I have to thank you for linking The Cinematic Orchestra, that piece is absolutely breathtaking.
I mostly listen game music and other instrumental BGMs, but my absolute favorite song right now is the main theme from How to Train your Dragon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fh_doTIrFRo).
Mr. B The Gentleman Rhymer
Just Like A Chap (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiRPBCiJg2c)
Straight Out of Surrey (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xAeSkdtaeI)
Soooo many good suggestions, and I had a day off today. Sunflower, Eich and Fenris: that music you recommended is splendid.
I can't place Wagner, Vivaldi or Liszt Ferenc anywhere; they are too colourful. Sorry for writing so long a post, I cut it at least four times. :)
I'm afraid my musical tastes are 1) archaic and 2) narrow, so I'm always tickled if someone else likes something I recommend.
I jump around all the time, but here's a double handful of my default bands.
Vienna Teng
The Hymn of Acxiom (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ttTf8N7Bwg)
The Last Snowfall (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSyz4Yv_I_Y)
[Teng] calls the song “sacred music for the age of Big Data.”
The hymn’s lyrics assure the listener that “somebody hears you,” that “you don’t have to hide,” to “let our formulas find your soul” and “now we possess you,” finally asking, “isn’t this what you want?”
My 11-year-old nephew has been studying acoustic guitar for a little over a year, and is focusing on classic rock. He and some friends have already performed "Hotel California" for a school recital. (He's pretty good, for a kid -- certainly better than his father, my middle brother, was at that age.)Oasis has a lot of songs that can do well in street performing. They're mostly a simple chords, with a few variations, and have a quick enough tempo to catch peoples' ears. He'll probably need some accompaniment, or improvise some changes to keep it interesting; Oasis kept a lot of their guitar pieces a bit too standard, sometimes. Something like "Wonderwall (http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/o/oasis/wonderwall_crd.htm?utm_expid=18438345-117.Xl9Y1cGLRGGq9QYsTE9P2A.0&utm_referrer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bing.com%2Fsearch%3Fq%3Dwonderwall%2Btabs%26src%3DIE-TopResult%26FORM%3DIE11TR%26conversationid%3D)," or "Talk Tonight (http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/o/oasis/talk_tonight_crd.htm?utm_expid=18438345-117.Xl9Y1cGLRGGq9QYsTE9P2A.0&utm_referrer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bing.com%2Fsearch%3Fq%3Dtalk%2Btonight%2Btabs%26src%3DIE-SearchBox%26FORM%3DIE11SR)," might be good. Those are links to the tablature pages, not the songs, but he should definitely listen to the songs beforehand.
Now my nephew is looking for relatively simple rock/pop songs he can learn to play that will yield maximum ROI in tips when he becomes a street performer. Any suggestions?
Rasputin!!!<3 Oh man, I'd forgotten that song! Used to be my ringtone once upon a time. I've memorized those lyrics XDOh, that'd make an awesome ringtone. Ooooohh, but I've got one I really like right now... maybe one day, though.

Song 2: Ra- Ra- Rasputin! (http://gifsound.com/?gif=i.minus.com/iwmeWi3Dkfpcx.gif&v=kvDMlk3kSYg&s=60). Found this with the gif and thought I should share it. This will be in my head all week. Highly recommend looking up the lyrics...
The Boney M song looks much cooler with this amazing dance accompaniment (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRWiqjgOyX0).Yep, I saw that dancing one too, haha. My stringy white butt can't ever hope to be that good at dancing. :'(
As for the gif set the full original animation set to Voodoo people by the Prodigy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13sxFHM6Mjg) is also amazing.

Sibelius' Finlandia (repackaged as "Be Still My Soul ...)
I know about this and numerous other versions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finlandia_Hymn) and still it feels really weird every time. Finlandia-hymni (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jaKko3VGAnY) is our almost-national-anthem, so people using the melody for other purposes is a real "what is this horrid desecration?!" situation, no matter how many times it happens ;)
Hey, I was (mostly) joking. What culture doesn't borrow tunes from others, and is there also any place in the world where people don't make mock versions of serious songs? Though it seems christian people are especially active in recycling all kinds of melodies to be used as Jesus songs. Years ago I was devasteted to find in my song book the Finnish "translation" for the heartbreakingly lovely renaissance love song Amarilli mia bella (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roJSYFu3pYk), since in it the song had been turned into an unimaginative praise to Jesus.
My favorite example is the music for Branle de L'Official (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTk3wzxpG4I) that most people know only as a traditional Christmas song.
I was hanging out with the Society for Creative Anachronism, sewing lumpy period dresses, and learning the dance hits of the 15th century.
Are there other early-music groups you like?
Maybe this will be the strangest song posted here yet, but anyways: The driver played this song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rlNpWYQunY)on the bus today. I had to stiffle a laugh because I immediately recalled the music video and pictured Emil being the lead singer.Well... *checks art thread*
Heavens, what a beautiful voice she has!
Okay. So, I started learning "Why Georgia" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5wvOXQX2Qo) yesterday, and something neat happened.WOW THATS AWESOME EICH! 8D seriously!
I am, kind of, for the last few minutes, singing while I play. I've tried soooo long to be able to do that, and I've never been able to do it before. I'm positively giddy and I needed to tell some people. That is all. *Shambles back to desk*

That's great! May it be the first of many songs pouring out of you. (Also, may I add, ladies like guitar players. Arrange to be "casually" practicing in the quad or wherever else lots of students pass by, and you will get admiring attention. I only ask that you not let the power go to your head and end up like John Mayer, with unappetizing tattoos all over and a string of jilted celebrity ex-girlfriends...)

Hehe I think the first and biggest female fans Eich will have will be his niece, sister and mum :3 first the family, then the world! Muahahahahaha! ;3
That goes without saying. :D I just hope the ladies of the Eich family don't get *too* attached, or every evening, instead of doing the "smoldering poetic guitar-hero" thing at the Student Union, Eich will be stuck singing "All the Pretty Little Horses" to lull the baby to sleep.Hhmmmm tough choice there, they're both incredibly awesome... Û__Û
I know that feeling, when you practice something a lot and then you actually see progress. It happened this year for me with my drawing. Suddenly I could draw realistic-ish 3d animals. It was awesome.Yep. It only took me six years, haha. Seriously gratifying. Maybe it clicked because I've been wailing like a lunatic to my music while I drive, for the last year or two... Hmm... That might actually be it; I didn't know much about singing last time I tried it. Well, I still don't, but I at least know some about it. :)

One of those is much more likely to happen than the other. Literally everybody should be able to guess which one. I'm happy doing either though.
Weekend's here, and I know what I'm doing for it, now. :D
So I came across this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7-vDjwautM) on tumblr quite a while ago, and thought it would do quite as well for Emil as for Hans. Beauuutiful~ *sparkles everywhere*
Also, Jónsi (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5VgLOs0LwQ).
Edit: Whohoo, I managed to mix up BBC and HTML in a very silly manner. All fixed now. Hopefully.

Ha! Love it! I think we've found our Emil! (BTW, I saw your "baskerville old face" command. Will BBC really accommodate other typefaces besides the 10 on the Simple Machines Forum menu?)
(Answer: Yes, it handles Palatino, one of my favorite typefaces, other than Gill Sans!)
I'm guessing you like sans serif fonts? ;3
Palatino has serifs, but in my last comment it reproduced too small to see 'em. It's a very classic, elegant, antique typeface, like Baskerville but a bit simpler and calmer. I actually am not much for most sans-serif typefaces (although Arial is my default because it's readable). Gill Sans I like because it reminds me of the London Underground and that "Keep Calm and Carry On" sign. In fact, I designed my business cards in Gill.
If you are also a font geek, you might like the book "Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore." It's a charming historical/literary mystery (sort of like Dan Brown's books minus the stupid parts). PLUS, it actually gets the geography and flavor right of San Francisco and Silicon Valley, which as a local is a big plus for me. I'm more willing to give an author that "willing suspension of disbelief" when s/he gets the checkable, real-world facts right.

It's Guitar Pick-em-off, here to save the day. Oh no, dissection movies, bugs and talk about teeth, his great fatal weaknesses!Lol, more of a repellent to me than anything. My true weakness is the kind of unbridled stupidity found on the likes of tumblr and youtube comments.

Is it weird if I say I find this very sexy?
Hmmmm, I'd be more worried if you found Mr Barry Morgan sexy, so, no. ;P
Is it weird if I say I find this very sexy?Nah. Passion is almost always sexy (as long as it's not over something like duct tape, or concrete. Music is nice and romantic/mysterious).
Hmmmm, I'd be more worried if you found Mr Barry Morgan sexy, so, no. ;PThe whole time I was watching that video, I was trying to imagine who he is at home, off the tv screen. He seems like he'd be a fun bloke.
And gosh Jónsi.....I haven't listened to any of his new songs lately, but that one is now my new favorite!! :D

Wow, I never stop finding great things on this forum. Who or what is Jonsi? Would I have heard anything else of his/theirs? (I gather Jonsi did soundtracks for "How to Train Your Dragon," which I haven't seen but probably should.)

No lyrics, unusual, good for drawing.
Aeroc - Blue Eyed Bitter (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yn0d8K-Zphs)
In a slightly different vein, some elegant ambient music (http://auralmethod.com/album/when-i-drifted-i-heard-a-faint-melody) (but sill good for drawing). The song titles make a poem-ish thing, which is really cool. This is right up my alley. In fact, I'll probably be putting this on my ipod pretty soon.

Thanks for the recommendation!
EDIT: This is pretty much as good as Helios. Like 99.999% as good as freaking Helios. Thanks a bunch for showing me this; it's awesome.
Does anyone know any good balalaika music? I'm writing something that revolves around said instrument and I would like some more than the most obvious ones in Youtube.
Would anybody be interested in having a cultural exchange with music? Like everybody would list few of the most famous songs from their country, what's popular right now, what kind of folk music there is, or anthems and so on... And there could be short explanations and random facts added.
I could make list for Finland, if there is any interest. :)

Is American National Anthem usually sung without background music? In Finland we usually have background music even in small events such as school events. And do people sing together it even if it's hard or there one artist or choir in events where the anthem is sung?
All in all American patriotic songs are lot more upbeat than Finnish ones. For example, the most known march song, Jääkärimarssi (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnraQ-9rhMM), has this line in it:
"Deep is our blow, our wrath invincible, we have no mercy, no homeland. "

Case in point, note the specific fertilizer eternalized in the refrain of la Marseillaise (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Marseillaise#Lyrics) ...

I play the cello fairly adequately. Whaddayou guys play?Classical and acoustic guitar. Lots of both.
Classical and acoustic guitar. Lots of both.I'm one pianist, and I know SparkyDragon plays the trumpet :3
We also have a pianist somewhere around here too, I think. Maybe the SSSS musical thread?
I'm one pianist, and I know SparkyDragon plays the trumpet :3I dunno, maybe we could make the SSSS Symphony Orchestra or something like that
Why? What's up? :D
I'm also a pianist. And also a singer. Aaaand also a violinist. But I'm a better pianist than singer or violinist.Cello may be awkward to carry around, but I love the sound and pitch, and that stabby thing at the end is useful when you're walking home from auditions and you get cornered in an alley.
One day I will buy and play the viola. Cello is a bit awkward to carry around, violin has a really high sound. Viola is the perfect middle ground~
I dunno, maybe we could make the SSSS Symphony Orchestra or something like that
Some people are working on a musical over in the main SSSS board...ORCHESTRA! I SAID ORCHESTRA! No offense, but I don't much like musicals.
I found this thing: The Infinite Jukebox (http://labs.echonest.com/Uploader/index.html)Kewl!
Basically, it breaks a song down into beats, and as it plays through each beat there's a chance that it'll jump to another beat of the song the sounds very similar, theoretically giving you an infinite, ever-changing version of the song of your choice. Of course, it works better with some songs than others...
Ok. Music I'm listening to.Yes! Yoko is awesome. My favorite of her pieces is Didn't it rain. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foWnyUG-R-Q) It brings back a strong memory from when I was younger that, coincidentally, took place after a light rain.
Well, I resumed to work myself through Yoko Kanno's works. I currently listen to her Brain Powerd OSTs a lot.
Waver is my favourite piece out of that.

Ah, yeah, those were the days, my friend...Go and search up The Dark Knight Rises main theme. I have no idea why, but it makes everything, and I mean everything sound badass. Including an argument my friends were having over the merits of a turkey sandwich.
Anyway, I also like her Gabriela Robin and Ilaria Graziano songs a lot.
My all-time favourite though is Strangers from the first Wolf's Rain OST.
I'm just amazed that they were able to get this sound out of a cello.

Ok, though Yoko Kanno's been mentioned, I just have to link this one: Cowboy Bebop's full soundtrack (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N82fP5hKZPY). Listened to the full thing twice already, and can't stop, it's so good<3
Ooh, thanks! I was listening to a full Yoko Kanno playlist last night on YouTube and loved it. Yet another reason to appreciate this forum -- I am being introduced to so much great music I'd never even *heard* of. (I am really coming to appreciate OSTs as a genre.)There are loooots of good soundtracks out there.

Judging from the sheer number of Yoko Kanno mentions, I went and took a look-see. LOOOOVE ITYep. That's pretty much the long and short of it, haha.
Wow, everyone has such good taste! I'd post reccomendations but I think between Hedge14 and Eich and Sunflower, all my favorite stuff got covered. Even the church music and the renaissance music, which is impressive.Hmm. We have a thread for user-made music, in this board, actually. I might be putting some stuff in there once I get a mic!
I'll just, uh, volunteer my voice and keyboard skillz for the SSSS symphony orchestra, although at this point it looks like it's like 3 pianists, a violinist, a guitarist and a trumpet player. That could be a cool unconventional ensemble though!

Can you play marimba? Then we'd have at least the nucleus of a mariachi band! (Though we could probably also use someone who plays guitarrón or vihuela. Maybe Noah O., who plays cello, could switch to guitarrón. Or else we could try some very refined, orchestral Cuban son. I can at least play some hand-held percussion and help imitate fire trucks, a la the Buena Vista Social Club.)
We always like to hear what people consider their favorite pieces.

*Beware the fangirl*
WHOOOOHOOOH!
I actually fell in love with Yoko-sama's music because of that anime. It was like "Wow, this soundtrack is really good, wonder who wrote it, wait there's more?"
Currently working myself through Darker Than Black (because you mentioned it before) and so far I really like the soundtrack (apart from the generic, but unfortunately earwormy, opening and ending themes, why didn't you let Yoko-sama do the job in a whole, baka).
I'm watching anime because she's made the soundtracks now, instead of listening to soundtracks because they were good in the anime. A first, but a good first. It means that I can first form my own opinions of the music, then watch the story, and then form different opinions about the soundtrack after I've relistened to it (and agree/disagree with composition choices, eheheh). It's nice.Same here, ever since the discovery of Yoko Kanno. Sadly, there's so much unreleased music in the anime, that you will never get a hold of, no matter how intense your search might be (curse you, one unnamed track from Turn A Gundam, and there's a lot of that in Wolf's Rain, too, at least somebody managed to get them filtered out in GitS: SAC and Arjuna)

AAAAAH I've been listening to Ghibli soundtracks all afternoon (if no one has ever listened to them, I recommend most of all Porco Rosso, Howl's Moving Castle, Nausicaä, and Princess Mononoke - but ALL of them have superb soundtracks), and I am now desperate to read Howl's Moving Castle again. But we don't haaave it so I'll have to get it from the library and that will have to wait 'til tomorrow, that is if they even have it on the shelf, and I want it now, anyway. *siiiigh* I might have to make do with the film... but I really want certain scenes that were only ever in the book... :'(
OH oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh have you heard the Kikujiro soundtrack? Also by Hisaishi-sensei? It was for a live action film so it's not as well known as the ones he's done for Miyazaki's films, but it is my favorite sountrack he's done--no, my favorite music he's done, period. Look up the track Summer (I'm on a phone, or I'd link it for you). Go ahead, I'll wait while you listen and spasm with joy.
YES I HAVE AND IT IS BEAUTIFUL<3 It's one of my favourite Hisaishi OSTs :D I won't go so far as to say it's my absolute favourite (I have memories linked to the others, and if I really had to choose, Porco Rosso or Howl's Moving Castle would win), but it is beautiful. I especially liked Rain, for some reason... I'd like to see the film one day, but it's hard to get here.
aww man, but have you listened to okuribito ("departures"), hana-bi ("fireworks"), or watashi wa kai ni naritai ("i want to be a shellfish," i know, i don't really know either)? okuribito has to go on record as probably my favourite album hands down, in addition to being my favourite hisaishi piece.
Edit: Pentatonix (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sme8N2pzRx8). If you haven't heard of them yet, congratulations, you have a lot of good a cappella music to go through.
Dieses video ist nicht verfügbar. So much for that.
Das tut uns leid. :-\
So much for that.
Anyways.
I've had enough of Darker Than Black for a short while, and dived into Zankyou no Terror instead for a change. (still talking about soundtracks btw)
And I must say, it's amazing. I'm a bit disappointed about the OP, Trigger, but the ending...
Probably used to DTB by now, upon reading the title Dare ka, umi wo I expected something generic jpop-ish, along the lines of Gravity at best, or rather Yakusoku wa Iranai.
What I got instead, was this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AV7QjFdNkUk).
Just... *insert emoticon with open-mouth-out-of-awe-because-I'm-too-lazy-to-search-something-like-that* ... woah.
And now I can't get it out of my head.
I'm also mildly obsessed with Von, and it might make me learn Icelandic eventually... maybe.
I think I really need to watch the series, additionally it seems to only have 11 episodes, I guess I can squeeze it in somewhere.
I recommend this (http://hola.org/) to solve the not available in this country thing.First: it didn't even say "not available in your country", just "not available"...
Oh man that song is stunning. Reminds me a little of Regina Spektor, but ooooh. So good! I might have to watch the anime now, too. Been deliberating on that for a while, actually - it looks interesting, though potentially depressing. (Which is why I've been putting it off - Shiki is still affecting me, and that was months back. Not in an aargh-that-was-so-scary-and-so-sad way (it wasn't at all, to me at least), but in a let's-reflect-about-the-human-condition-and-start-thinking-about-cynical-and-depressing-philosophical-thoughts type of way.)

I hope you'll enjoy this as much as I do.
Lastly, a video of adorable baby foxes playing with a dog, to the song, "Douce France." (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcn5haJpKAQ) I have no idea what's being said, but it fits well and I like it. Also, sealing the deal here, the dog has a Ville tail.
Lately i have been stuck listening to finnish rock from the 80's
/>
/>
We had some great musicians back in the day, sometimes i feel i would have fit in better back then.
Considering the 5 million Finns, there is some ludicrously good stuff.
Add Hector, Juice Leskinen, Yö, Popeda, Hassisen Kone, Rauli Badding Somerjoki, Tapio Rautavaara, Kotiteollisuus, CMX, Dingo and good grief this list could get long.
...aside from the awesome metal and EDM scene.
Since there's no way to pick one from the huge amount, I'll throw in a Finnish band singing in English in Japan, just because I like it and the world needs more Sonata Arctica, and they're a lot of fun live.

So, given the recent events of SSSS, this has been running through my head: Dead Milkmen - If you Love Someone, Set Them On Fire

Are there any fans of Gorillaz here? Because they are going to start making music again and I am SO PUMPED*raises hand*
*raises hand*
I saw your avatar and wondered if it was Gorillaz-related. I didn't know they were writing again, but it'll be fun to hear what they come up with.
I'm not in much of a mood to get pumped right now, but that is definitely good news.
Haha, yeah, I drew myself in the Gorillaz art style yesterday when I couldn't sleep cx19-2000 and Dare were my two repeat-forever songs, not including the ones they had that were really popular. I listened to those a lot, too. :/ But the music video for Dare is fantastic. So weird and unusual, with just Noodle dancing around and a giant, mechanized, human head attached to the floor.
I used to be totally addicted to their music, but for some reason I never really listened to Plastic Beach. But I've been making up for that now by listening to it pretty much all the time now that my love for them has been rediscovered. Also, Rhinestone Eyes. I've been listening to that song on repeat for something like 4 hours now O_O

Okay, you guys gotta help me out here. I've listened to "On Melancholy Hill" (after initially seeing a gif from the music video and getting interested) and I REALLY LIKE IT but like, I don't usually listen to rap music? Like, ever? And I'm told Gorillaz vary their style quite a bit from song to song and album to album...
So, can you like, give me an overview? What do I listen to? What's good?

And I'm told Gorillaz vary their style quite a bit from song to song and album to album...I don't listen to much rap either, except Gorillaz. They make it good. They have a lot of rap and techno elements, and a really unique style. Very creative band. Also, the members of the band are... animated? They don't even represent actual people, they're just characters.
So, can you like, give me an overview? What do I listen to? What's good?
Well, like I said earlier, I really like Rhinestone Eyes. It's not exactly rap but he's like... talking the lyrics? 2D does that a lot. Personally I also think Feel Good Inc is very awesome, but it has rap, so if you didn't like that then maybe not. There's a lot of good songs, really. I'll try to write you a list of some of my favourite songs that don't have too much rap in them:All of this, basically. I listed some of the bigger ones, which I like more for whatever reason, but they've got some fun stuff all over the place.
Rhinestone Eyes (Plastic Beach)
Empire Ants (Plastic Beach)
Broken (Plastic Beach)
To Binge (Plastic Beach)
Kids With Guns (Demon Days)
El Manana (Demon Days)
Every Planet We Reach Is Dead (Demon Days)
5/4 (Gorillaz)
Tomorrow Comes Today (Gorillaz)
19/2000 (Gorillaz)
The thing with Gorillaz is that their style is very unusual, so sometimes you have to listen to a song a few times before you really begin to like it. And like you said, their style varies a lot, so I thinik you'll just have to listen to some of their music and find out for yourself what you like ;3
Clint Eastwood (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoQYw49saqc) - Easily their biggest song. Just fantastic.

Edit: I think the art style is worth mentioning as well. The animation is really nice to watch, and done by the artist who made "Tank Girl." Really creepy, cool stuff.
Wow, so many great suggestions! My ears thank you! Thanks for reminding me I still need to go through Sigrid and Eich's list of recommendations!
I noticed a lot of European/North American music. Therefore, I'd like to introduce one of my all time favorite songs, all the way from the shores of Brazil! Os Mutantes: A minha menina (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEpSFOibJho)
Also, as general genres, I like African Palm Wine music and Caribbean Calypso.
And, because I have to represent my hometown:
Doomtree No Homeowners (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X13P_DaQyE4)
Thanks for reminding me I still need to go through Sigrid and Eich's list of recommendations!
Also, DOOMTREE! :D I heard a couple of their songs on Welcome to Night Vale and they're really good!
Oh my gosh! Solovei! It makes me so happy when people from outside the Twin Cities have heard of Doomtree! If you can, you should try to come to one of their annual blowout shows they have every December! It's seriously so good!
Ahh, thanks, but... I'm kind of on the other side of the continent... and... in a different country. And have no money. BUT if I am ever in Minneapolis in decemer I will keep it in mind!
It is beautiful and just... the best thing, the best.
(Also that second link is just about perfect with anything.)
Rainymood is the best. :D I like it with Hammock (http://www.rainymood.com/watch?v=izySYII7-lE).
I probably use too many ambient noise sites. (Noisli (http://www.noisli.com/) is my favorite, though)
Primarily heavier stuff, like Gojira, Rammstein, Job For a Cowboy, et cetera. I can appreciate older stuff, like Nirvana and Metallica.
I like Jazz, Classical, and some individual Vocalroid singers, like Katerinu2, Miku-Tan, and someone who sang a few versions of Matryoshka.
Some rap is ok, and I wouldn't need all of my hands to count the amount of pop songs I like.
I have a request to put in, for anyone who feels like it!
I'm in a really jazzy mood lately, so I'd love some instrumental jazz recommendations! But, you know, fun, comfortable, sunny sort of music, not gloomy. And preferably guitar, but as long as it's good, I don't mind.
You'd probably like Django Reinhardt and the Hot Club of Paris.
Rollo, our resident jazz expert, had a lot of recommendations in this early post:

Guuuuh, there's too many good guitar players in the world.
Since this is now an option I'm going to use it right away for... Mandolin Madoka Magica, that's what. I don't know what I was expecting but definitely not this level of sheer brilliance!Oh my god, this is just.... this is...
Should we make this a youtube-specific thread?
In which case, this seems like a good video to start off with :)
@Solovei: Always just irks me that he says Finland has been with the baltics which doesn't make any sense and i have never heard that, hell i have even heard the "finns are mongols" theory more often.
It's because today's Finns are descended from the Baltic Finns. Today the closest ethnic relatives to Finns live in the Baltic countries, therefore the Finland-Baltics connection.
Hmm. Just looking at the first image, I am a bit skeptical, Blackjazz... What?
"Sakura" - Trad. played by P-O Kindgren. Yes, I know it's a koto piece originally, but... just listen to it!
Hello musical Minnions! The time is currently 8:45 AM on the east coast of the USA, and in a little more than two hours the church choir that I conduct will be singing a song that I wrote. They've sung music that I've written before, but this one is different. The others were all just me pounding something out real quick for a Sunday where I didn't like anything in our music library. This one was commissioned, and was something in the vicinity of nine months' worth of work and tweaking and stress.
I'm tempted to share the midi of the music from my composer program, except that for whatever reason the program doesn't know how to play grace notes or fermatas. Which is really weird.
Congratulations -- that's awesome! I play in my church's handbell choir, where occasionally we've performed a commissioned piece or something one of our more musically gifted members arranged. (Someday I hope to upgrade my sight-reading and harmony skills, so I could arrange something too. I'd *never* be able to write something from scratch.)
I'd love to hear your piece. Is there a recording you could share? By PM if you don't feel like making it public?

Soooooo, Blooborne is an amazing game. It also doesn't have any music, except in the only safe zone and during boss fights, but wow, when the soundtrack does come on, it's fantastic.Spoiler: Omen show

Roisin : Also meant to ask: is the the 'Notingham Town' song the one that in England they call 'Nottamun Town'? The riddle/puzzle song with the nonsense statements that come across a bit like Zen koans? With the bit that goes 'Not a soul would look up/ not a soul would look down/ to show me the way to fair Nottamun Town' and the beautiful eerie tune? I love that song!
Yes it is a variant of Nottamun Town.
A ripping, A ridding along a gray mare.
With a white mane and tail and a stripe down her back
And every hair on her was right coal black.
I can't see any embedded videos on my Windows phone. :(

This was propably the song that really made me fall in love with violins in music since just wow.oh man, this song played like every five seconds on every single radio station in norway the whole of 2009...... I was so angry because I love this type of fiddling, but I grew to hate the song with an intensity of a thousand suns very quick.
Anything can be better with a violin; Metal, Pop... Anything.
Back in the day, his victory was celebrated in Belarus more than in Norway. Rybak was born in Minsk, after all.

a calm, relaxed and even sedate Norwegian song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0K7TPq623QE).
Setting the mood for today - there'll be so much armour-building and handsewing pleather in store for me again that my mental state will be this or crying, and I like crying less.
That's delightful! Who are those merry folks? And what are they singing? I recognized the word "troll," that's all.
And what's all this about armor-building and hand-sewing pleather? Are you working on a cosplay project you can tell us about?
AH HA HA. "Calm and relaxed." Oh man, you Norwegians slay me. :o WAIT! No, I didn't mean it literally!But... Korpiklaani is folk-rock. Maybe folk-metal, but if that is terrifyingly blood-thirsty, I wonder what you call one of Enslaved's calmest songs (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWyfnp-ghaE).
Geeze, this is almost as bad as the time I clicked on a link that FinnishViking said was a nice cheery sample of Finnish folk-rock and it turned out to be some terrifyingly bloodthirsty, soul-sucking metal anthem by Korpiklaani.
Um, thanks for keeping me up to date with what "the youth" is listening to, anyway...
The project would be this one, Flemeth from Dragon Age. This'll be my cosplay for the NCC in this year's Närcon, almost there now...Aah, neat. Going with her look in DA2 it seems?
I enjoyed your score for Psalm 139 very much. It recalled to me Ashokan Farewell, Concerning Hobbits, and Shenandoah, at times. All of which I like, incidentally. :D
Aah, neat. Going with her look in DA2 it seems?
Yes - while I also love her Inquisition look, this is the one that's my favourite. Something about the snake pattern on her Inquisition clothes is a bit ehhhh to me and I prefer the rivets to be silver, not black. Having said that I admit I have been considering making her Inquisition outfit at some later point... but that's for some time in the future. Not considered her look in DA:O? It seems to be the easiest one to do. Not that I can say anything (never even made an outfit, and I think the only one I could pull off is Alistair anyway).

I followed the Badly Drawn Boy link (liked the song -- I only knew the group from the "About a Boy" soundtrack)I'd attempt not to mention my Badly Drawn Boy obsession, but it doesn't help that he's playing live a few miles away later this year (which he rarely does) and I can't go.
I listen to world music (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zr3NXNy9ZAs)but otherwise I am the least musically hip person you know. (FYI, I subtitled the linked song "the gypsy Macarena" in my iTunes collection.)

Also, bit of a long shot here, but given that you said "world music", you might like Beirut? I've heard them classified as world music but I'm not entirely sure they're quite the same thing.
/>(they can do a surprising amount with an accordion, ukelele and a brass section, I'll give them that- not normally my type of thing but I saw them live a few years ago and they're actually pretty great)
Also, kinda keeping with the mashup vibe of the track you linked, you might like Mundian to Bach Ke by Panjabi MC. I mean, who doesn't like a song that mixes classical bhangra with a Busta Rhymes/Knight Rider sample?

Montiv, for a moment there, I though you shared a song from The Knife and got all hyped up. xD
I'm pretty sure I have the most unspecific and wierdest music taste of all. (But I'll be stalking this thread just to see if I'm wrong)

It apparently holds the world record on being the loudest piece of classical music ever written. You were definitely not wrong about it being LOUD. Wow.

By the way, when will they properly release it? :P (Now some of these people are releasing new music (https://vimeo.com/129789113), but still!)One friend told me, while making me discovering these more or less hidden titles, that it seemed the record company wasn't hurried :-\

Also, war songs from the times of the 1991-1995 Yugoslavian bloodbath are a big guilty pleasure for me (with an emphasis on guilty - I apologize in advance to ryagami and any other possibly present folks from the Balkans)

Here is something I find similar:
This is actually one of my favourite artists right now. She sings in Swedish, English, and Sami (this song is in Sami) and I love hearing the traditional music influence in her stuff.
can't I take 8 books and 1 song instead? :(Man, I wish- you know what, go for it.
Some neat german medieval folk. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGko10RIGtY)*Immediately wonders how to dance on it.
I'm listening to Sassafrass (http://www.sassafrassmusic.com/). They have an album of polyphonic folk inspired by Norse/Icelandic mythology that I'm listening to at the moment.
I think I'm going to need more than coffee to help me wake up this morning. Metal to the rescue! Sabaton - Night Witches (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7NSUFDHFgg)
One of the absolute best songs on their Heroes album, I think, though that might be a pretty popular opinion.
I have a french song by the artist Mika. This is probably one of my favourite songs by him. I don't thing it's been released in north america though.
Ólafur Arnalds - Ljósið (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYIfiQlfaas)Haaaaa, I love this song :) It's the one who made me discover his work. And yes, it's perfect to write.
I find this guy's music so incredibly calming. Such a pleasure to listen to.
(And I won't lie, his stuff is great to write fic to - especially quiet, contemplative stuff.)
I've been playing this and The Drop That Contained The Ocean all week.
So good.
Everybody go listen to this. Right now. All of it. (This has literally taken over the live chat)

Welp, found my soundtracks for today.
J.D. McPherson - North Side Gal (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZGn4LncY0g)
I'm totally in love with this. Sounds like something straight out of the '50s, but it isn't! : D
Does this... remind you of anyone? ::)
Teräsbetoni - Missä miehet ratsastaa (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_jrXSCxMbQ) (Finland's 2008 Eurovision entry)
I keep listening to this over and over and over, it's so good ahhhh - It reminds me a lot of another metal band though. Problem is, I can't figure out which one. I've read that they're influenced by Manowar, but that's not the one I'm thinking of. This'll drive me nuts for ages.
Iron Maiden perhaps? Teräsbetoni lyrics are pretty special though... "Where men ride there sheep cannot graze, where men ride there you hear the wolves howl" (ok, all things considered they're pretty similar to Iron Maiden in this regard too). ;D
I love her voice.I discovered this song one day when we had a lot of hours on the road, this summer, and I can't say why but I like it :)
I can't get rid of the goose bumps. o____o
Never thought I'd like a Disturbed song so much. I also never thought they'd cover a Simon & Garfunkel song, but I can't get rid of the goose bumps. o____o
(Like all the metal "folk songs" Fenris, Kjeks, and FinnishViking have shared with me... ;) )
Actually you can dance/find "patterns" of dance on some folk metal songs, but I'm out of topic.
... to use the technical term -- "scary music"? (Like all the metal "folk songs" Fenris, Kjeks, and FinnishViking have shared with me... ;) )
Wow, that's terrific! Not like the version I know, but it fits somehow. Goosebumps, definitely.Weeeeeell...
I'm not familiar with the oeuvre of Disturbed. Do they play -- to use the technical term -- "scary music"? (Like all the metal "folk songs" Fenris, Kjeks, and FinnishViking have shared with me... ;) )

I'm not familiar with the oeuvre of Disturbed. Do they play -- to use the technical term -- "scary music"? (Like all the metal "folk songs" Fenris, Kjeks, and FinnishViking have shared with me... ;) )Nah, Disturbed ain't metal. More hard rock (although, some of their songs are more metal, and some are just plain rock). And Staal ain't 'horrifyingly, blast-fired metal' but a fairly standard industrial metal band (not really that hard, compared to say Enslaved, Dimmu Borgir, Trelldom etc).
The way this guy plays his guitar (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKiM5Ha905I&feature=youtu.be#t=1m39s), it's basically this:dang

This guy has a seriously good touch with his melodies. It's precise but you can tell he's super into what he's playing.
Van Larkins - Nullabor Plains (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_yrx-RAb2o)

Whoa there, come again? Did he lose his toes due to his playstyle?
Woah, nostalgia trip. Not for the eighties though, I'm not nearly that old, but for GTA Vice City. Man, that game has the best sound track.
A nice little Norwegian song about Sweden. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sBBwUQpRkI)
I recognize the tune: "Happy Together" by the Turtles. Do I want to know what the words mean? :oThat's the song. I was really annoyed earlier because I recognized the song but in another language.
(I think I recognized "Svenska pests"...)

Uhhh... for those of us who don't speak the tongues of the Known World... what's it about?
Et rottent land, hvor nisser bor.
Svensker er en skam, for oss som bor i nord.
Vi overtar jo alt de har,
og det de har er volvo og skabb.
Um... "A rotten land full of boring trolls"? "Swedes are always committing scams"? "They drive here and there in their Volvos and have scabs"? ;)

I've been listening to lots of vaguely sinister string music lately. Have some Shostakovich. Strings quartet no.8 in C minor, movement II (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjvTTfbpWjY)
Aaaaaaaah! I love Shostakovitch!!!! He wrote a sonata for viola that is beautiful and creepy and angsty and I have it and hope one day to be able to play it. He had the saddest life though. He used to sit outside his house at night so that when the police from the soviet union came for him they wouldn't wake his family taking him away. And when he had success in his music, Stalin would denounce it, and force the papers to give him horrible reviews.
Oh wow, I had no idea. That is sad. (Perhaps I should look up more about this guy...) What's the title of that viola sonata that you like?
I kinda used to be obsessed with Shostakovich so I know random things about his life... actually it was more of an all around classical music obsession. I know random details about most of the composers, such as Vivaldi was a priest and had asthma :D
Here is the sonata:
(snop)
I've only recently started taking some cautious steps around classical, so there's a lot about it in general that's new to me. : D As for that Shostakovich sonata - "creepily eerie" is right; I'm glad that I had time to listen to the whole thing. It's great! (Also wow, that sheet music. I can see what you mean by 'oh god why'.)
Well, that's flattering. I don't get the part about sending them to Reykjavik like a Shetland-pony though.I seem to remember that Icelandic horses, once they left Iceland, are not allowed back onto the island, ever. Maybe announcing that you'll send them Shetland ponies is akin to threatening that you'll ruin the bloodline forever ... ?

No horses or ponies of any kind are allowed to enter IcelandSo what would happen if someone were to ship Swedes to Iceland, and declare them to be Shetland ponies? "Lieutenant Ólafur, take action"?

Just because iTunes chose it randomly this morning.

It would be too longand I fear way too personalto explain why and how much I love this song <3 So, I will just say I have it in my playlist for the novel I'm writing this month, and this random choice was a little magic :)
I recently re-found a band I used to listen to a lot years ago, so obviously I have to share some favourites. They take a LOT of influence from traditional Finnish music, to a point where I could almost count them as just... continuing the tradition. Almost.

So I know you showed me this band a few weeks ago, and I've been listening to them quite a bit. And you see now I have a problem because I end up just playing this one song over and over and over. I've been doing it all evening. And I can't seem to stop. I need to sleep. But I also need to keep listening to the song. I'm sitting here in the dark, going one more time, no one more time, no just one more. I can't stop. I need help. It's all your fault. Does anyone know of a finnish music addicts anonymous group? I mean, I'm probably past that sort of help, but it might be worth a try. *hits repeat again*Which Varttina song is it? I'm just trying to find out which song to avoid....

Enya! Enya enya enya enya
Enya is amazing, everyone should go listen to ANYTHING BY HER
My favorites are One By One, Book of Days, Only Time, and Flora's Secret.
Yessssssssssssss! ALL the Enya!!oooooooh thanks!!!!
She's just released some new music!
Mannn, Walk Off the Earth's cover of "Somebody I Used to Know" is SO GOOD.Oh, it's been a while I hadn't heard it :)
Mannn, Walk Off the Earth's cover of "Somebody I Used to Know" is SO GOOD. Yeah, I'm still not sick of this overplayed song, haa. Though it helps that this version has some other neat things going for it. (5 people playing one guitar at the same time? Never would have imagined it.)
I've been lowkey obsessed with this band for a couple weeks now:
Some of you may have heard of The Knife? This is that girl's solo project :)
I can't recall any Canadian music. But there is some random Russian songs I like. My mother listens to Vladimir Vysotskij and I do like some of his songs. Have you noticed big differences between Russian, Nordic and Canadian music? There must be some.
This song, by Norwegian singer Ida Maria (whom I should really check out more) was stuck in my head for a few days, so I thought I'd share! Video features some low-impact dancing skeletons and a banana but is otherwise entirely safe
Does anyone have any memorable music from years ago?

Oooh I just watched this, it's great.
Days like this just won't start without Shiina Ringo (and double the usual amount of coffee, which reminds me I should go make some).
Here's something from an alternative french canadian singer. I really like her music and I have been listening to it for years.
Mew - Water Slides (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mictv7AgLqg)8) You know you love it~
I've had this stuck in my head all day so far, and it's all Solovei's fault for telling me to listen to it. (How dare you ;p )
I woke up with this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ) running through my head and I... yeah... Well, okay.
YOU DID THAT DELIBERATELY

Guardian - Now you got me thinking about Moby. This track reminds me of music from an old Arkanoid-style game I used to play when I was a kid.
Another one by Värttinä, Tuuterin tyttäret (= girls of Tuuteri). The lyrics are about the girls coming over dressed up in their best, asking people whether they'd be allowed to dance inside a house or if they'll dance outside but either way, dance they will.
This is an an-dro ! :D You can dance it !
(fact, this is the melody of a folk song from bretagne in france (jument de michao) and i didn't realize until I found a music box with it in a souvenir shop)

This is a Canadian classic... and I've had it stuck in my head for like two days, so I'm going to inflict this earworm on you all.
Stan Rogers - Barrett's Privateers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7Ufe0jF-AE)
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
we'd fire no guns, shed no tears!
But I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier

Noooooooooooooooooo staaaaaaaahhhppp. I had to sing this in choir. Do. You. Know. What. That. Means.
Am I to interpret this to mean that you have some song-related trauma going on there, dear Vi?
/me pours a bucket of ice water and snow on JúIf I may say something, there are a lot of worst songs which would justify this treatment, to my mind...

Been on a Les Misérables musical nostalgia kick. Except... even though I love a lot of the songs, the one I keep returning to is this:
Les Misérables - I Dreamed A Dream (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-p6OH7FoWoQ)
It isn't even my favourite, but I keep listening to it over and over and it makes me want to write tons of sad stories, oh no.
Sleeping at Last - Light (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNoMeKCn0x4)*Opens the link. Begins to listen. Smiles* "Light", indeed :) Thank, Yuu.
Can't stop listening to this one... It has such a comfortable feeling to it.

Right, I'm going to be quite indulgent here and post a whole load of music. Feel free to skip or ignore :)
Here in Australia it's a yearly December ritual for the young and hip (or the embarrassingly old desperately trying to convince themselves they are still young and hip) to select their ten favourite songs of the year and vote in the Triple J Hottest 100. As one of the latter group, I have spent the last couple of weeks considering the music of 2015, and have come up with an objective* list of the 10 most best songs of the year. So I figured why not post them here and inflict my execrable musical taste on you all?
So in no particularly important order, here we go (with nice text links to avoid lengthening the page by about a billion percent)...
Bassically - Te Shi (https://youtu.be/9xYrCeucYzk) - A bit of a slow burner, but when it kicks in, wow!
Long Loud Hours - Urthboy featuring Bertie Blackman (https://youtu.be/9gWPyYcD1pc) - I posted this one before. Aussie hip hop.
Flesh without Blood - Grimes (https://youtu.be/Tv9YoYCKNoE) - Grimes being all arty, the only copy of this on YouTube is a mini film featuring two different songs. Oh well.
Pedestrian at Best - Courtney Barnett (https://youtu.be/o-nr1nNC3ds) - A bit like Dylan. A bit. Warning! Video clip contains clowns! shudder
The Love Within - Bloc Party (https://youtu.be/-3v1Lqz1XTI) - WUB WUB WUB WUB Wub Wub wub wub...
All the Day - Haerts (https://youtu.be/XAnfKZReN1c) - I love the rhythms in this! Also the band members met in Iceland, so you know it must be good!
Get Down - Jess Kent (https://youtu.be/eNQqEtibfoc) - Possibly the catchiest song of the year. Emoji overdrive!
Scud Books - Hudson Mohawke (https://youtu.be/uWKHQ5ufV2c) - For some reason the version on YouTube sounds like it's being played through a phone :(
Something to Tell You - Tom Lark (https://youtu.be/swL_pkXaDDU) - The video is the most hipster thing you'll ever see, but the song is great.
Love me Badder - Elliphant (https://youtu.be/75d6eLxZLOo) - Kind of like soul. Or something. Maybe.
So there you go. Enjoy! Or not as the case may be! :D
(*Subjective. Extremely subjective.)
Courtney Barnett is brilliant and she's been getting a lot of notice here in the US as well. Sometimes I Sit and Think and Sometimes I Just Sit is on a lot of reviewers' lists for best of the year (and certainly one of my top albums of the year).
honestly the best piece of soundtrack from the force awakens: [...]Nooo I totally wasn't listening to this on repeat the whole yesterday afternoon... ::)

Discover weekly's gem of the week:
Over the Rhine - Ohio (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIcuS4YyBxQ)I LOVE Over the Rhine! They played at my college when I was still in school and it was amazing.
Can never get enough of Over the Rhine... I find their music so calming. ^^
I LOVE Over the Rhine! They played at my college when I was still in school and it was amazing.
Speaking of calming things, it seemed like high time I dropped some music from my favorite band (http://www.pearlandthebeard.com/) in here.
Pearl and the Beard - Swimming (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tw-9Of9O14)
(Apologies for the non-official video, they don't have official ones for most of my favorite songs).
Came across Walk Off The Earth's cover of "Rude" and oh man, I can't stop listening to it. It's SO GOOD. (And I like that they didn't change the pronouns/context. : D )
I love Walk Off the Earth!!!! :D (they're from Canada did you know?)
I really like Sigúr Ros- ólafur Arnalds is great too. But Sigúr Ros is special because of the almost mystic atmosphere you get when you listen to their music, especially their album Kveikur.Hello, person with similar tastes on music ! :D *Loves Sigúr Ros so much* <3
Spotify told me I would like this song, turn out it was right.
Pretty uncanny if you ask me
David Bowie - I'm Afraid of Americans (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPVrFIP0CMs)
I was never hugely into Bowie's music, but man, I listened to this song over and over and over in high school. Good times....
It's about an old retired English couple living somewhere in rural Sussex who struggle to survive in the aftermath of the nuclear war that wiped out England and the rest of the world. Also an important source of information for anyone (like me) who suspects that "just a nice cup of tea (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVq76YvTPMs&t=3610)" might actually be a thing worse than The Day After. >:D

Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark - Enola Gay
Great Big Sea's "End of the World" seems like a good way to open my morning today.
:'(
Mumford & Sons - Not in Nottingham (cover) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uaQtKZUKlVg)

(This is what we listened to back in the 90's kids! :)))
Hah, maybe YOU did. I listened to stuff more like this ;)
I was nosing around for Kalevala stuff in other languages, as one does, and found a Russian folk metal band called Kalevala?? Close enough, same thing. This song's so peppy and catchy!
I don't want the world. I just want your half.

Double H,
Baroness
Double H,If that got you interested in some more progmetal I recommend you check out my favorite band: Haken
Well that was interesting. Progressive metal? Now there's a term I'm not familiar with.
Hmm, it's probably in the "I'm too old - it's too loud" category. But I just might buy it or one of their other CDs.
Actually in my youth, circa 1968, I did listen to the band that set the style for what was to become heavy metal. Whose name escapes me, that's what I get for being an old fart.
They recorded an album in one of New York's old dis used dock side warehouses. They put their huge stack of double Marshall's at one end and the microphones in the middle and just played.
I'll have to dig that one up. All my vinyl is in storage, it will be a bit of a chore, but now I'm curious to see how it compares. Hopefully my memory of the music isn't as bad of my memory of the bands name...
If that got you interested in some more progmetal I recommend you check out my favorite band: Haken
Is the band you were thinking of perhaps Black Sabbath? They are widely regarded as the first metal band. They formed in '68 and released their first album in '70 so maybe a bit later than you were talking about. They're also from the UK and not US.
I'm thinking I *need* the gym tonight. And this is one of the songs that keeps me going in the gym.

Double H, Thank you for this one. It came on Saturday and I was listening to it on the way to work.Since you like The Gentle Storm and concept albums you might also like Ayreon. It's a project by the same composer as from The Gentle Storm. He has many projects but I think Ayreon is his main project.I'd be playing it now but we're not allowed to put strange CDs/DVDs/thumb drives/etc into our work computers, it's that kind of a place.I particularly like that the Storm sessions are not over metal-ly, just really raucous in a good sort of a way. I've always liked "concept" albums and ones that incorporate non-standard rock&roll instruments into the music. I was a big fan of Renaissance way back when they were in their prime. Progressive metal, an interesting concept. Would you care to recommend a particular Haven CD for a start or should I just listen around a bit?

I love the Mountain Goats! My favourite of theirs has to be Palmcorder Yajna
Ooooh I really like this song. It reminded me of some songs by Eivør Pálsdóttir and the Witcher 3 OST.
Here's some cheesy Eurodance from the 1990s, one of my many musical guilty pleasures:
I have one of that Swede's albums lying around somewhere - it's "Last Man Standing", if I'm not mistaken. My dad bought it in the late 90s. I also have a CD of Eiffel 65's "Europop" (the album with the song "I'm Blue") and some CDs by 666, Scooter and U96.
I think I love this song more every time I hear it.
HAKEN - Initiate (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7pEXGCtnnk)
My favorite band just released their first single from their upcoming album. It's good.
So, a piano + cello mashup of "Let It Go" from Frozen, and Vivaldi's "Winter", exists. And I am delighted.
Listening to Turn of the Cards by Renaissance, the first album that ever inspired me to write!
I can't imagine stoner metal has much of a following amongst the people here but hey, in for a penny in for a pound :D
Here's a band called Spaceslug. This is some of the most relaxing stuff ever.
That could totally be Hawkwind right there
Listening to Turn of the Cards by Renaissance, the first album that ever inspired me to write!
I <3 Renaissance. "Carpet of the Sun" is ny favorite song ever.
"Part of the world that you live in, You are the part that you're giving."
Sigur Rós in festival in June, then maybe (= of course) in Paris in August too, and now Ólafur Arnalds announcing a concert with Nils Frahm inside the Louvre during one night ? :D Did all my favorite artists decided today had to end better than how it began ?
BABYMETAL - KARATE
I heard about Babymetal a while ago and checked out some of their music but I wasn't really into it. The only song I liked was Gimme chocolate!! and that one is just okay.
This song from their next album however I actually like a lot. I hope the rest of the album will be as good.(http://i.imgur.com/uTO6yLC.gif)
Anyone else like the music of Horslips?
Have you heard their take on The Táin?
Interesting!
Well, I was listening to something completely different, so change of mood ahead. Igor Stravinsky's Rite of Spring. (I wasn't actually listening on youtube, and this video is only 1/3 of the ballet, but I like the costumes of this old version.)
urbicande > Disney version is very cool visually and introduced me to the piece, but it's far from being the best version in terms of interpretation and orchestration and such (not to mention it's not the complete piece, it removes a few bits and move others around).
I find this is good music to listen to while doing art:
I am obsessed with this song right now:Oh wow I totally forgot about Adam Young's soundtrack project!Haiz this is all your fault
Listening to this right now https://soundcloud.com/erasedtapes/olafur-arnalds-poland?in=erasedtapes/sets/olafur-arnalds-another-happy (http://and it's really good)Haaa, I love Ólafur Arnalds's music :) I'm so happy to go at his concert soon !
Two different versions of the same song
gentle:
and storm:
Double H, I just happened to be looking at the insert this morning for lyrics and read the whole thing. The idea for this was based on actual historical documents, or so it says. I think that's very cool.Arjen Lucassen (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arjen_Anthony_Lucassen) usually has some kind of concept for his albums, he even has different bands dedicated to different concepts. For example every song by Star One (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_One_%28band%29) is based on a different sci-fi movie.
This is on my mind todayNice rhymes
Personally I've always been really fond of Andrew Bird. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySoOkE92KlY) He's pretty soothing and delightful.
Oooh, I LOVE Andrew Bird! I'm pretty sure he could be singing about anything and as long as he played the violin to go along with it I would listen. I'll have to check out Owen Pallett now too.
If you like Andrew Bird and end up liking Owen Pallett I really recommend Sufjan Stevens if you haven't already heard of him. He's got a vaguely similar style as those two, plus his music's also just super gorgeous and frequently has a lot of pretty string instruments in it.
Oh yes, I definitely enjoy Sufjan as well! Haven't listened to him in a while, I should remedy that.Yes !!! If you haven't heard the suite he collaborated with the Osso string quartet on making, it's called "Run Rabbit Run" and it's about the Chinese zodiac with a song for each zodiac animal. It's super gorgeous and I find myself going back to that one a lot.
An old, but very cute and relaxing song about mining excavators. ;D
*Sits back in chair, stunned* What did i just watch?! :'D
OH MAN I kind of lost interest in Kamelot when I heard they were going to change vocalists (I believe my reaction was an overdramatic "NOOOO nobody can replace Khan!"), but then the other day I actually got around to hearing some of their new music ("Liar, Liar" specifically) and... I am so pleased. Their music still has the exact same feel that it always has. *_* Okay, okay, I might need to actually get into their new stuff now...
An old, but very cute and relaxing song about mining excavators. ;D*snert* Top (driving) speed: 0.6 km/h (0.375 mph). They seriously considered doing a complete disassemble-transport-reassemble instead to get it from one mine to the next, and having it drive the 22 km supposedly was more economic by a less than impressive margin.
Enya - Orinoco Flow (1988)
I just came home from an Árstíðir concert. It was wonderful and magical and intimate and everything I hoped it to be. And I wanted to give blanket thanks to this fandom - because I only heard about them three months ago in SSSS-Chat!I love this. ^-^ Thanks for introducing me to Árstíðir!
So, I got distracted from my work listening to this:
They are really good, aren't they? This is my other favorite that they did:
(Great show, too, just saying :) )
Sooo youtube threw some stuff by Xandria at me, and I've taken a liking to it, especially "Nightfall"...
How have I not heard of The Oh Hellos before? Thank you, Haiz!no problem! I also love their previous album, through the deep dark valley, but they don't sell it as Real Life CDs anywhere? ;__;
For once youtube suggestions were actually good and I got this and it's awesome.aaahhh AURORA!! she is norwegian so she's all over our radio and tv hahah. she is oNLY 19 and so pure and good!!! i saw an interview with her once and i have this strong urge to protect her from all evil in the world
Plus she has Hotakainen hair, It exists!
This is seriously the most beautiful song I have ever heard.WHOA that actually is super mega beautiful *___________________*

For once the song stuck in my head is actually a song I like! Maybe it will help me channel my inner Sigrunwait no that's a terrible idea I work in customer service.
Katzenjammer - A Bar in Amsterdam (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kbdCDeKSoI)

Today's discovery : Says by Nils Frahm.
/>
I obviously had to listen to his work and wonder why it took me so long to be curious.
well there goes my music budget for this month ;)Blame Troposphère ;) It's his fault/thanks to him *Chooses the second option*
Ok, all you Scandinavians probably already know about Wintergatan, but did you know about this? That is AWESOME!
/>
That is AWESOME!
It reminds me a bit of this:
May I say that I might be slightly obsessed with this.
I love Loreena McKennitt. So. Much. There's something about her music that just sounds like a warm summer night.
Loreena McKennitt is life you guys. The Highwayman is somewhere in my top 10 favorite songs ever.
Ever play a video game with an OST so good that you're still listening to it and drooling over how pretty and incredible it is years after you beat it ?
I like it! What is this game... *looks up where to download it*
It's a pretty good song, but the clip is amazing!haha yesss i've seen this before, i love animated music videos....... this one is so catchily done
It's a pretty good song, but the clip is amazing! This is one of my favorite music videos :D
/>
For some reason, this wormed its way back into my consciousness today after many years outNot gonna lie, I'm still pretty fond of this song and still listen to it.
This one of the best animated music videos i've ever seen, its disney level animation in a music video:
Its even better how they resemble the actual musicians.
For some odd reason, this song is a mysteriously persistent earworm for me:
lithromantic (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Lithromantic) or maybe just about commitmentaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!! this has actually been one of my 'aromantic songs' for a super long time!! it's so. spot on. tbh
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!! this has actually been one of my 'aromantic songs' for a super long time!! it's so. spot on. tbh
(oh dang that acousting version is good, too...)
im actually a big sucker for songs with 'love' in the title that aren't outrightly stated about romantic love, y'know? like this one:
like. i'm sure you can interpret it however you want but personally, i refuse. all ambigous love songs are platonic to me. i cannot be stopped
Okay so more weird music. I have discovered electro-swing and I am in love.
Oh my gosh, I love Mushi-shi, and even though I'm not on the second season yet, I found this song (the second opening song) and I LOVE IT <3I have absolutely NO memory of this song. (And I have 2 OST - 46 songs - on iTunes...) Could it exist different versions ? Mmmh... Could it be time to watch Mushishi again ? Or read it again ? *Looks at her shelves*
I'm surprised that I haven't posted about the very lovely band Tasseomancy sooner (who used to go by the name 'Ghost Bees')
anyway, this song makes me cry
I'm also pretty in love with their song Sinai (https://vimeo.com/21567857)

Oooh, I like that. And it kinda reminds me of this,
Aaand I couldn't pick which one I wanted to post so have both.
Yes, inside I'm 14 years old
It's 2 AM and I can't sleep partly because a part of my mind is still a little drunk of music and delighted to have realized it was on THIS song I felt I could dance a reel (Not the traditional irish one, an other form.) one week ago during the concert in the Louvre ! :D
/>
I'll dance it someday. I don't know when, I don't know where, I don't know with who but I'll dance it <3
Yes, inside I'm 14 years old
Yes, inside I'm 14 years old
Wow I love this.
If you haven't seen this video you're missing out.
This song was my life anthem around my third year of college, I'd listen to it almost every morning while getting ready. I rocked tight pants a lot back then, still do. Love me some skinny jeans and leggings.
Um... I don't quite know what to think of this :'D

I find this song to be really calming
I've been listening to Jesca Hoop all morning
Songs often tell stories for me, and I always fee like Jesca Hoop's are telling a story I can't quite grasp.
Soooo Q linked me to this - 40 minutes of ~hardcore medieval party music~
And oh my gods, it's the best thing ever.
PARTYE HARDE
/>Wow, he's really good!
This guy needs more attention, he only got 4 songs but they are all so different.
Here's a link to his soundcloud page with all his songs. Highly recommend it.

Genesis - Land of Confusion (1986)
So, more of my weird synesthetic impressions of music... The opening of this one honestly sounds like that moment when you change locations on Google Earth and it zooms out from one side of the planet to the other. I want to vid this so bad just to see that moment in action.Yeah, that's a pretty good analogy. It reminded me more of going for hours in the sun on the fast lane of a highway, but either way it's a great song, thanks for the recommendation!
Here's one that's been a source of solace to me in times of turmoil.Thank you for introducing me to this! :D It's so lovely and warm!
I can't believe you just posted that, I've been thinking about doing it myself.
There's a serious lacking of symphonic music in this thread and I have full intentions of changing that.
This is a delightfully sinister sounding piece from Prokofiev's 1935 'Romeo and Juliet' ballet. A long standing favorite of mine :D

This is my all time favorite orchestral song, just listen to the brass it's sooo good!
I love this piece, but find it a bit hard to take seriously after it was used as the theme to a Saturday morning TV show that featured CGI fly-people marching into a giant fly head, which burped at the end :DI haven't heard of this, but I kind of want to see it now . .
Did someone ask for more classical/symphonic/art music?I DID WOW
Cause I got reserves.
György Ligeti's Lux Aeterna, one of several haunting pieces that were used in the movie "2001: a Space Odyssey". This is an entirely choral piece, with no instrument, but 16 singers each with a slightly different part.
I haven't heard of this, but I kind of want to see it now . .
I actually had a trawl around the net to see if I could find it. Sadly FlyTV ran for only two years in Australia in the early 2000s and nothing much of it seems to have survived :(
I love this a lot! And also this:
Some of you may have already heard of Detektivbyrån, they're a Swedish music group who do both electronic and folk music usually with their music being a delightful blend of the two. I love this song so much, it gives me some serious feels, it sounds innocent but sad but positive all at the same time.
I love this a lot! And also this:
I believe this is the second time you've posted something by radical face on the forum and I'm starting to really dig them ;DYessss! (It probably is. I love Radical Face, and I spam my friends with their music more than I'm willing to admit. :P)
Luth: youtube is telling me that video isn't available in my country, ugh.Yessss! (It probably is. I love Radical Face, and I spam my friends with their music more than I'm willing to admit. :P)
Oh and I've been meaning to post some Faded Paper Figures stuff here...
Definitely one of the more electronic things I listen to. ^-^
Sorry, spamming everyone with Faded Paper Figures stuff again. :P Current song obsession:
Wow, dang, that's good. I never knew I needed this.
Iceland with Sigur Rós <3*Sighs* <3
Juniper, there's a really popular Homestuck fanvid set to that and I thought I had escaped the Homestuck feels, but apparently no. ;-; That brought them back. That might actually be how I discovered that song / group . .
Starting the day with some Apocalyptica. < 3aahhhhh apocalyptica is great!!! also the first Impromptu Decided-On-It-The-Same-Day Concert i ever went to, it was rad. gotta respect guys who can headbang their long locks while playing the cello.
I am fine with the spamming thanks for introducing me to Faded Paper Figures. :Pohhh wow this song is so chill and nice, just what i needed right now. thanks for sharing
Currently my fave is this:
...I don't suppose anyone had a burning urge to see a Jedi and a Sith locked in an epic battle of cello playing?of course i had. i'm up for epic cello battles always
Buffy Sainte-Marie - Starwalker (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oo6bf88iHHU)I've listened to one of her album, Illuminations, its a pretty good psychedelic-influenced folk album
Welllll looks like I have a new favourite song....

Oh, and this!
Oh, and this!
Am I the only one wondering how they're going to clean all that up? :o
I like this one!
Starting the day with Ólafur Arnalds - Only The WindsI was so happy to hear him during the concert in the Louvre in May :) (Concert which has for result that now I'm keeping an eye on his potential tour, and it's the same for Nils Frahm.) Is Only The Winds your favorite title ? *Curious*
Siiigh I love this guy's music. < 3

I really like this song and I really like this video:I love this one!
It doesn't get any better than Aretha
Actually there's video of Aretha doing Jumpin' Jack Flash on solo piano that is just outstanding. The material is so unlike what she usually does, but she just gets into it totally, completely, with all her being. It's incredible, I'll have to look for it.
Not the one she did for the movie with Whoopi Goldberg?
Lazy8, while I do have my favorites, I love practically everything Enya does. Her music helps with anything I'm trying to do.
Enya is one of those formerly-guilty-pleasures-that-I'm-determined-not-to-feel-guilty-about-anymore-because-there's-no-good-reason-to-feel-guilty. So yes. Listening to more Enya now. :D
You should never feel guilty about liking ANY band or artist. I rather liked this when it came out, for example, and I still kinda do
Somebody drove by my house blasting Great Big Sea's "Ordinary Day" at top volume last night, and it's been stuck in my head ever since.
I certainly don't appreciate the whole BLASTING IT WITH THE WINDOWS DOWN thing, but I have no complaints about my neighbours' taste in music. ;V
Have I mentioned I love Peter Gabriel? Even if I still have no idea what this song means.
I certainly don't appreciate the whole BLASTING IT WITH THE WINDOWS DOWN thingFix that, then ...
Morning music!
Morning music! This band is amazing and I love them and I'm so glad someone else does too. ^-^
this song makes me feel like a meteor shower insideOoh I like this song a lot.
You seem to be in the habit of introducing me to good music. I really like that first one! :DYay, I helped! (And the first one is one of my favorites too. I listen to it on loop when I draw Emil and Lalli. ^-^)
This band is amazing and I love them and I'm so glad someone else does too. ^-^Oh man, I'm just happy to meet someone else who has heard of them! And yep, Freelance Whales is awesome and also currently my favorite thing on my iPod.
Who else is excited for the new Godzilla film?
I should listen more of Amiina...
Listening to a lot of Jesca Hoop today.
Last time I heard this song I was probably ten. I thought I wouldn't like it anymore. I WAS WRONG.

Hiiiii guys! Finally posting here instead of just the comments!
Here's something quite interesting:
/>Quite trippy and mesmeric.
I present: the Sliding Scale of Intelligent Lyrics. A few minutes ago, I was listening to this:Ahaha, I know what you mean. I can go from this,
Now, I'm listening to this:
And yes, I completely love them both.
I can't even give people a straight answer when they ask what kind of music I like.
Uuuuuuummmm... it might be a little easier to list the kinds of music I don't like.Thaaat's pretty much what I normally do. :D
uh, gUYS, FLORENCE + THE MACHINE HAS HAD THREE SONGS OUT FOR FINAL FANTASY XV FOR THREE WHOLE DAYS NOW AND I JUST NOW FOUND OUT. I'VE NEVER EVEN TOUCHED FINAL FANTASY BUT I SORTA WANT TO NOW.Oh man why did I not know about this!? Thanks!!

Jhev, look around You Tube there's a couple of pretty good walk thrus of FFXV. You can see the game without having to invest the hours in actually playing it. Of course after seeing it you may want to play it ;)
Dating myself here, but I feel compelled to point out that Stand By Me originally came out in 1962.Okay cool, I might have to go check that out then. And yeah, I know that it's a cover I was just REALLY excited and neglected to point it out. ^^

I was reminded today how important minor and major keys are.
While Don't Stop Believing in a minor key is a gosh-darn nightmare...
/>
And, apropos of nothing, I made a cake of your face...
/>
AUGH! Who would make that! I did not need to see that....
/me recoils in disgust
Actually nothing they have made makes any sense.
Which is why it's awesome! ;D
It's dreadful isn't it?
Which is why it's awesome! ;D
Actually it reminds me of a Eurovision thing that someone posted when that was happening. I'll have to go back and find it.
Edit: Dang! I can't find it. Help me out here folks. I'm not sure it was this year. It was from an Eastern block country. The lead singer was rather heavy, she and all the other performers were dressed in silver lame/sequin outfits. Musically it was more campy than good, if you know what I mean. Although I don't think the performers meant it to be that way. Ring a bell for anyone??
I was reminded today how important minor and major keys are.
Do you mean this... erm... masterpiece? :DI thought of this masterpiece too
(there is no such thing as "Eastern block" anymore...)
Do you mean this... erm... masterpiece? :Doh Helia, yes that's what I was looking for. Thank you, thank you. Yes I sort of knew eastern block is an anachronistic term these days. I guess eastern European is more appropriate.
(there is no such thing as "Eastern block" anymore...)
Hey speaking of American style fiddle stuff, turns out fiddlesticks are an actual thing:this is great!!!! i unironically love folk music with all my heart
i love the oh hellos so much!!!!!!!!! i think i have a favourite band now
(This is also some of my favorite album cover art.)
this is great!!!! i unironically love folk music with all my heart
anyway i remembered dulcimers are a thing that exists and i love them also
Not a big fan of the original "Summertime Sadness" - it just seems too mopey and... well... dead to me. But I'm really getting to like this cover:Oh wow. I never liked the original song, but I agree, this is better!
It just sounds so much more... alive. It actually sounds like stormclouds to me. Man, I love it when metal bands cover otherwise bland songs and actually make them sound good.
Listening to the Pachelbel Rant led me to Blues Traveler's Hook, which led me to 90s alternative, and not one song I have listened to in that genre has left my head in the few days I've listened to them.
Save me from this hell. Someone please give me a stronger earworm than Pachelbel's chords.
It's a Gordon Lightfoot kind of morning.... "Sundown" is a pretty good song. (Not my favourite of his, but pretty good.)
Have some Sabaton, to enhance your historical knowledge.Oh this is new, I didn't know they had a new album. Cool.
How about some music to get in the autumn vibe? :DEee, I love this album! :3
Tame Impala - Apocalypse Dreams
The person who got me into this band sure knew what she was doing. >3>
Sometimes youtube's suggestions are actually relevant to my interests. How about that.
ELUVEITIE - A Rose For Epona
A question for all, what's your favorite way to dnld You Tube stuff to music only files, don't need the video. Thanks
I just found out something very important in part thanks to the lovely Pupunen which is that in Finland they have metal bands for small children.
I just found out something very important in part thanks to the lovely Pupunen which is that in Finland they have metal bands for small children.
I wasn't expecting this to be that good! The music is good, the costumes and production quality of the video is great, it's a dinosaur themed metal band. Basically everything about this is amazing. What?

A question for all, what's your favorite way to dnld You Tube stuff to music only files, don't need the video. ThanksI'm using the same link as Luth :) My only problem is when it's a long video, like 25 mn, or a whole cd I can't find, and then I have an error message...
Aaand some Kerli this morning. Man, I haven't listened to her music in ages.
I found it! I found it! After all these years, I finally found out what it was called! This is pretty epic.
"snip"
Since we're posting old electronic music now:this one is also great!
"snip"
Someone's probably posted this before, but look really cool music video.
Very cool. Reminds me a bit of the clip for Powderfinger's Sunsets that I can only find in a somewhat dodgy version on VimeoAhhh man, where are the non-dodgy versions of videos when you need them? It still looks pretty cool though.
It's been far too long since I've posted something old school and ridiculous to this thread.
Behold the majesty of the late, great Guru Josh with Infinity (1990's: Time for the Guru)

Sorry (not sorry!) ;D
Back in the early-mid 2000s, Russian comedian, musician and TV show host Alexander Pushnoy used to re-make various Russian pop songs Rammstein-style. The end result was something like this:
WHY HAVE NONE OF MY FINNISH FRIENDS EVER TOLD ME ABOUT THIS BAND?
I can't recall if I've ever subjected you all to the Black Sweden - the only band in history to infuriate ABBA fans and Metallica fans at the same time...
/>
Bagpipes but no seal :(
/>
RIP Greg Lake
Caravan Palace did Black Betty and I approve.
The 90's were,
A: Awesome
B: The worst thing ever
You must pick one!
Uhhh so there's a lot of blood in this video at the end for some reason and a Dark Souls reference??? I have no idea what's going on but the song is good.
Even if I only tackle music...there is no way to do an A/B with that...
Oh I agree totally. It's just a silly headline for a wildly silly song :)
Italy's Rockin'1000 are at it again, with Smells Like Teen Spirit
/>
I love the sound you get from ~100 drum kits! :D
Yuri on Ice has taken over my life, so this is now my new favorite song.
I totally don't wear socks and pretend to ice skate to this song around my house on the hardwood floor when no one else is home . Never.
I've never actually played Silent Hill but dang this song is good.
Urbicande > I knew what it was going to be just from the thumbnail and the mention of Portuguese.
Also: <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
We were practicing this for choir and now I can't get it out of my head now xDHeck yeah, Melanie Martinez is great.
My alternative earworm the last few days has been:
The song is fun, but oh those outfits...!All I could think of while watching that is the injustice of what the dance for that song was like on Just Dance...

Sorry.
(Not sorry.)
/>I'm not sure why you're apologizing for enriching our lives
Sorry.

I can't believe you're going to post those and not this...
I love that entire album. Have you heard the one where they do (what was then) modern indie rock songs?
Have I shared this yet?Oooh Fleet Foxes! They were one of the first bands I listened to when I started diverging from my 10 year old musical tastes.
Surely someone's posted this before but,Oh, the Decemberists! My young love <3
I need something angry today
I've been listening to a musical called "Dear Evan Hansen" recently, and it's beautiful. It has the most accurate portrayal of social anxiety and some depression I've ever seen.Spoiler: show
I would definitely recommend this musical to anyone.
Just going to leave this here before I go to bed:
This music video is super cool.
(warning for flashing black and white parts)
Anyone here heard of Stellardrone? Nice music to ease yourself into the day, I feel:

Indigenous Australian musician Dr G. Yunupingu* has passed away at age 46 :(

(* It's culturally respectful to not use the full name of a deceased indigenous person, or display their image)
is there a translation of that available? It was very beautiful.
I think I may have fallen in love with this song.
I don't know what this is exactly, but I kind of like it...

I have an obsession with Broadway musicals if that has not already become apparent.
so, yeah. There's an electro-pop opera musical adaption of War and Peace
Is that The Great Comet!? I've been listening to that lately and I love it! Especially some of the songs in act 2, like Letters and Belaga. (I too, have recently developed anWOOT. My family is about ready to throw me out a window for singing them at the top of my lungs. Especially with Prologue from the Great Comet. :'Dinterestobsession with musicals, so far it's been Hamilton, Heathers, Singin' in the Rain, and Great Comet.)
WOOT. My family is about ready to throw me out a window for singing them at the top of my lungs. Especially with Prologue from the Great Comet. :'D
Not strictly a song but this is great
From what I can find online the lyrics are...
Warwuyu ŋarranha mulkana
ŋaraku bapawu
ŋurununa gunipunharayu
ya..a, bäpa marrkapmirri
ŋathina wilawilayurruna
ŋuruŋuna djarrawalyurruna
liya-wayma Bekulŋura
ya..a bäpa marrkapmirri
ŋäthina Djotarra manda
garray Dhuwandjika Daylulu
ŋuruŋuna djarrapalwuyu
liya-wayma wäŋaŋura Gunyaŋarri
Which translate as...
Grief has taken hold of me
For my father
When the sun sets
Oh, beloved father
Crying and crying
When the sun goes down
My mind there at Bekulnura
Oh, beloved father
Two Gumatj ladies crying
Ancestor boss ladies Dhuwandjika and Daylulu
When the sun sets
My mind there at the place Gunyanara
WOOT. My family is about ready to throw me out a window for singing them at the top of my lungs. Especially with Prologue from the Great Comet. :'D
If you don't listen too carefully you might think this is a love song

I would also strongly reccommend Dear Evan Hansen and Next to Normal!Ohh, yes, those ones are really good! Also, Be More Chill.
This is the single weirdest crossover of musical genres I have ever heard.
How does it work? HOW!?
Ohh, yes, those ones are really good! Also, Be More Chill.
I'm fairly convinced that Neil Cicierega is a genius, I just can't figure out if he's good or evil...I imagine he'd count as a chaotic neutral genius.
I may mean chaotic (http://baddice.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/battletome___khorne_bloodbound_by_jihunlee-d9d1g5o.jpg) in more ways than one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVcAyEMM4Cc)
Made another beat out of a Debussy sample! (might as well post these here)

Watching Your Name for the 100th time, and these will forever be my favorite in the soundtrackSpoiler: show
Those are some of my favourites too, Nandemonaya is good too. That was an awesome movie, I should watch it again some time for sure.Ooh, I've heard of it, but I haven't gotten around to watching yet. I definitely will, though!
Have you ever seen Hotarubi No Mori E/Into the Forest of Fireflies' Light? It's reminiscent of Your Name (being a supernatural romance) and some Ghibli stuff. It's got really beautiful artwork and music too:
/>S Y N T H W A V EOoh, I'm not the only one who listens to synthwave (and Power Glove) here. That's good.
My favourite song from The Great Comet. (Warning for memes)*click play*
*click play*
*immediately chokes on drink*
*falls off bed from laughing so much*
that was beautiful
RIP Tom Petty
This is more of a music video/animation, but I thought this was one of the most beautiful things I'd ever seen. For anyone who was here on the forum's last birthday, it reminds me very much of the movie we watched, "9".
The only song in the iTunes of my new phone because apparently the others were purchased by apple accounts I don’t have access to. Mostly my sisters, one who’s away at college and the other who moved back to Florida. >:(

Anybody figured out what the music is that plays during the short video on the kickstarter page???Shazam tells me the track in the Kickstarter video about Book 2 is "Where" by Little Clubthing. (https://soundcloud.com/little-clubthing/where)
Gods only know where I keep finding this stuff.
I can't help but imagine that this is what really happens in Finland when people get drunk. I should ask my astronomy professor, she's from there.
AND THE SAUNA BURNS DOWN AGAAAAAIN

The Australia of 30 years ago was an innocent place where we knew nothing of fashion, haircuts or epilepsy warnings...All I really know of Australia is a tendency for... unique formulas.

Heather Dale - "The Greyhound"
Simply beautiful.
For any Terry Pratchett fans out there, I can't help but imagine Death from Diskworld watching the ship in the storm and wondering "What did I do?"
Here - for no reason at all - is some 90's German dance music.
Warum seid ihr so LEISE?!:P
All-girl rock (and pretty gay) musical about Lizzie Borden? Well, it's a thing and it's amazing!
:P
Bernd das Brot?! Das schaute ich mir früher immer im KiKa an! :'DOch wenn alle paar Monate 'mal wieder 'ne neue Nachtschleife aufliegt und ich am Wochenende Zeit hab' ....... :3
For any Tolkien Fans out there, Clamavi De Profundis just came out with a new masterpiece:
Probably my new favorite by them. When I saw the title, I wasn't sure how they would do this particular poem, but I think they did it justice.
This is... I don't know exactly what this is to be honest, but it's awesome! ;D
Yesterday evening, Penguin Cafe played in France for the first time in the garden of Cartier's Foundation. It was a joyful moment, I came only knowing one of their song, "Cantorum", which I like a lot <3 and discovered some older from the previous band (Penguin Cafe Orchestra, by the father of one of the actual member)
Wyrm, that is a charming piece of music!
I found and made a playlist of most of the songs from Minna's stream if anybody is interested. I really enjoyed the music in the stream and thought it'd be nice to have it for studying or drawing or whatever. There were a few songs I couldn't locate, so if anybody finds them let me know, and I'll add them:Better late than never, but thank you very much for this!

Here's the link to the playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrPx8QogH1r32g0cpzcsOw8CyI4qtXNRV (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrPx8QogH1r32g0cpzcsOw8CyI4qtXNRV)
Does anyone have a list of the songs from Minna's more recent streams anywhere? I seem to remember someone in the stream comments mentioning that they were writing them down, but I haven't seen them posted anywhere (by Minna or by Minions). I might just go back myself and make a playlist when I have time.
You can go back and view the stream, but I don't know whether the playlist caption also shows (and can't check on my phone, sorry).
I've also been listening to a lot of classical guitar lately - Julian Bream, John Williams, Ana Vidović - when I ran into this young master of the instrument:
The latest Sabaton album just dropped.
Thanks Alkia :) I listen to quite a bit of modern folk inspired rock from Scotland so I often forget others don't hear it! I remember being in a car with an in-law from Scotland and my music came on, she burst out laughing, "Oh my god, have they tried to make scottish sounding rock with bagpipes! That's so stupid!" It was by a very popular band here... I don't like my in-laws.I can see why. How rude! >:(
On page 5 of the general discussion board at present is the ‘Musician Talk’ thread, where some of us have talked about instruments. That might interest you.
As in ‘Breizh digannes’?
Does anyone here know of any artists with music similar to that of Low Roar? Thank you in advance!
Today is the anniversary of D-Day.I'm getting a message that the video is no longer available because the account that posted it was terminated :(
my favorite spanish-language artist, natalia lafourcade, dropped a new album recently. [snip]
A beautiful cover of a lovely soundtrack.
Tangentially, do you see the statue in the video as an old man in a robe or an orangutan? Because I’ve always seen the orangutan but apparently it’s supposed to be an old man.
I thought I'd share something that I discovered recently; the closing scene of the film Master and Commander, in which the main characters share a duet on cello and violin; I am now a fan of Luigi Boccherini's La Musica Notturna Delle Strade di Madrid.
I cannot express in words how utterly transcendental an experience I had listening to this song for the first time. It's a folk song written as a ballad, about a knight and a fairy who can turn into a horse (there's a word for them but I've forgotten it). I am not doing justice to it by describing it. Go listen to it, please.
