Alright, so: You've probably all noticed the "Newbie" labels near you avatars and names by now. This is the lowest rank of a system that ranks users by their number of posts. The current ranks are "Newbie," "Jr. Member," "Full Member," "Sr. Member," and "Hero Member." I want to change these labels to reflect the themes of SSSS, so what do y'all think I should rename these ranks as? Cleanser? Mage? Captain? Scout? Grade C Cat? Citizen?
Come up with some lists so we can make this place a little more unique!
But of course. :)
If anyone will ever get banned I request they are marked as "infected" or.. hehe, troll.
Although I think, once they're banned, their posts are simply removed altogether.
Doubt it! It would make a nonsense of every thread they have ever posted in. No forum does that by default, that I know of.Eh, that's how it was on my old SMF forum. You're probably right about it being an add on. It did destroy a lot of conversations, and it always confused me a bit.
There are add-ons for various forums which enable mods to remove every post in the case of, for instance, spambots, but it's unwise to do that in the case of previously well-behaved forum members who have become infected!
Here are some ideas for forum ranks.:
In Quarantine
Out of Quarantine
Serf
Scald
Scout
Cleanser
Grade C Derp-Cat
Grade B Farm-Cat
Grade A Lord-Cat
Great rank names!I didn't realize that was what serf meant. Peasant it is, for now, though I'm waiting for the entire list to be finished before I implement it.
My suggestion is to replace "Serf" with "Peasant." We know the SSSS world uses the latter term. And the implication that, 90 years down the road, some people are in a permanent semi-slave status (cf. serfs in old Russia), makes me uncomfortable. Although if that's what Our Author intends, I won't protest...
Also, would "Captain" fit? It is a military rank, after all.I was thinking about using that one... Maybe "Troll-Slayer," or something like that, could be the highest rank if one of the characters gets a moniker of some kind. Actually, that's a good one for moderators...
Alright, so: You've probably all noticed the "Newbie" labels near you avatars and names by now. This is the lowest rank of a system that ranks users by their number of posts.
Jr. Member: Naïve Dane
Full member: Messy Swede
Sr. Member: Brave Norwegian
Hero Member: something with Iceland... I can't come up with anything, truth be told
The Icelanders and Norwegians will appreciate that kind of ranking. The Swedes and Danes might question it though.
I don't know.. let's not try to rank nationalities over each other.
Some more background info, please, before I go full-tilt crazy ;) :

I agree - let's not start WWIII here on the forum!

Am I only one who doesn't like using different jobs as labels? I mean... Our dear characters are team in SSSS. All jobs are needed! And I like to think them as equal to each other. So ranking jobs seems odd to me. Also, cat grades are kind of confusing.
Ranking jobs does seem odd, but I personally did so in danger-rank. A mage has potentially unlimited power, and thus could stand a degree in dangerousness above a cleanser, who only has as much power as the flamethrowers' fuel.
Or, as someone suggested, we could use military ranks. As soon as we know them, that is.
How about something like
Peasant
Scout
Captain
Strategist
General
Military themed, but still understandable and fitting in the world of SSSS too. I don't feel like this ranks the jobs between main characters too much.
I actually think yours is the best suggestion until now, but that's just my opinion. I still think that admins should be listed as 'cleansers' or, alternatively, 'troll-slayers'.
How about exchanging 'peasant' with 'shepherd' in homage to Árni's ever-glorious ambition?
I like idea of changing pheasant to shepherd. It sound softer! However, quite many people have suggested pheasant already and it's probably more common job in SSSS.
Not sure what I feel about military terms. They would be pretty clear and they do connect to story... However, I'd like labels that have even more SSSS-feel. Sorry if criticize too much, even if I have no solutions of my own. :(
+1 to troll-slayers as admins.
The reason why I chose those terms in particular is that every one of those positions is filled within the comic with someone - Lalli is a (night)scout, red-headed captain... is a captain, Taru is a strategist and Trond is a general. It also fits that they are in age order, from youngest to eldest.
Two things though: server is free, but I'll upgrade to paid if the site ever starts having lagging issues or something serious, and... I ain't no lady :Da) Close enough to being the treasurer IMHO ;)
I'm considering making a "Skald" class for certain users...Same caveat about single-word in-storyverse terms like "Troll" = banned or "Cleanser" = mod as already mentioned in my post. "Resident Skald", mayhaps?
a) Close enough to being the treasurer IMHO ;)Mayhaps... I don't really see what kind of series skald would fit into, though.
b) The comedic contrast was sort of the point of choosing Ms Icelandic Government as the namesake ... :PSame caveat about single-word in-storyverse terms like "Troll" = banned or "Cleanser" = mod as already mentioned in my post. "Resident Skald", mayhaps?
Mayhaps... I don't really see what kind of series skald would fit into, though. It's one of the established professions in the storyverse, just like cleanser, (other) military, (other) academic, peasant etc. ...
I like a "[Resident] Skald" optional title. I can already think of 4-5 posters in the Poetry section who should be practicing their acceptance speeches. (Honestly, the one starting "It's going to be okay. Okay?" nearly brought me to tears.)I think having a class for every type of former would defeat the purpose. The folks who are talking and diving deeply into topics are doing what forumers are supposed to do, but the folks who are making stuff like poetry and art are doing something different, and something that everyone else can benefit from, so I thought it'd be worth a class of it's own. Skald would be reserved for maybe 4 or 5 people at most.
If you do that, would you consider a "Fussy Academic" designation, for those of us who like to dive deeply into topics like how to scrub trollcrud off trains or how much Emil is motivated by noblesse oblige vs. egotism? Although I long to reach the exalted title of "Empress of the Derelict Airport," I can see that other posters are already more active, in a wider variety of topics.

I'm considering making a "Skald" class for certain users... It would be a decorative title awarded by me or a mod to anyone who's contributed a lot of artistic content to the comments section of Minna's site, the poetry threads, any art threads, or even some kind of musicians' thread that might exist at some point. What does everybody think about that?
It would be pretty handy if we had some sort of spoiler code. Large images can be hidden that way, and large sections of text if we get into essay mode (which might happen, SSSS has that potential). Not so much useful for actual spoilers (if someone isn't up to date with the comic, why would they be here?), but useful nonetheless.Looking for a spoiler code again; the last one I found was outdated, and I keep forgetting to continue searching.
Are you accepting nominations for "Skald"?
I think that's an excellent idea! There's a good list of contributors to poetry, but regular ones are not too many: five or six, perhaps? Do you already have an idea of who could get that title? The four or five who post most consistently, here or in the comments, or have contributed the most. Thiscat, for instance, started the poetry thread for the SSSS board, and has been filling it up pretty steadily with everybody's work. Give a who and a why, and I'll see about it.
The current icon for boards (the blue/gray squares) is a bit bland. Maybe we could get someone with graphic design skills to make two transparent png icons resembling the six armed snowflake/star symbol that is used in the comic. We could have a red one for boards that are updated and the usual gray for boards with no new updates.Great idea. Minna said she'd be happy to make some stuff for the forum, so if she contacts me about that, I'll bring it up with her. Otherwise, I know there's a couple of good artists in the comments who might want to help.

ThisCat would surely be the first to be awarded the title of Skald. She started the poem thread, kept collecting them, and wrote a good number of poems herself. I'd suggest Mikko and Riorlyne, but neither of them are in the forum. Come to think of it, the few regular poets are not here. There's ThisCat, and I think me, too. I mean, I've written a good number of poems and helped a little with the thread. Plus, I came up with the skald idea °^°I was originally going to make that post about Mikko, but I figured it'd be best to go with someone I knew had an account. I really want him to show up. He's just so gosh darn delightful to talk to. I don't think I've read any of Riorlyne's stuff yet, though.

I agree that if Mikko/Incanus and Riorlyne ever show up on this forum, they too should be greeted with laurel wreaths and vatic mantles. (Or whatever badge of honor Nordic skalds historically wore... my classical roots are showing.)

I could probably whip up a few symbols in paint without much trouble. Shoot me a message whenever.
Don't forget Sir. Orc. That dude's written a lot of poetry. Trust me, I had to collect it.
I was trying to make some transparent images just to showcase what I had in mind but apparently that's just impossible unless you have professional programmes. Seriously, GIMP is a nightmare and I'm so done.

Apparently the white area on the gray one turned dark during grayscaling....
Also, lovely icons, Fimbulvarg. I'll try swapping them in tomorrow.
Anyway, it's almost midnight, and I've got work tomorrow, so... goodnight everybody, and thanks again.
We had our first spambot today. His topic has been deleted, and every relevant facet of his account has been banned. I'm not deleting his account quite yet, because he was using one of those rerouting hostnames/IPs, and I want to find a way to block out his hostname altogether, so every bot that might come from there will be blocked. Thanks everyone for reporting it, I'm really happy that so many people knew exactly what to do. You've made this a relatively swift swing of the banhammer and I really appreciate it.
*Sigh* I don't want to have a new thread on this board at the moment, so I'm just posting this here, because this is going to be something I'll be looking into improving for quite a while, I think.

Oh, I guess it's back here again. I'll keep the topic locked in case you need it for anything.
Edit: I think we might need some kind of filter for these spambots. I removed another thread. They are multiplying....... oh, the horror, the horror..
This being a forum about a multi-lingual comic (btw, I hate the word 'comic' for strips like SSSS), I think it would be useful if forum members could declare which languages they understand or speak/read. Maybe using flags?I really like that idea. Would there be a way to declare languages that people are currently learning/semi-fluent in? A lot of people on this forum are trying to learn new languages from what I've seen. (Including me.)

That's not particularly hard, I just tested out a solution using icons in the signature. Hopefully you're able to see it. I suppose it would be for the best though if Eich could let us know if the forum can handle image files in signatures.Image files and gifs are fine in sigs. Just... don't make them too big or, if they are big, scale them down a bit using a little BBCode, because it's not fun having entire pages taken up by oversized signatures. Good solution, by the way. I'm not sure if there's a way to add another slot of info in the avatar area but, for now at least, this is a pretty elegant solution.
Also I'm not sure stealing icons from Humon's site is the right way to do it, but well ...

Okay, I give up. How did you do that? I can't get it to work.
You can now insert the url of any image file you want to add to your signature inside the brackets.Unless the targeted site has taken measures to prevent bandwidth theft (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inline_linking#Controversial_uses_of_inline_linking), of course ...

Seeing as how you already have a signature I assume you know how to access the Signature option (it's in the Modify Profile menu).
In your signature field you need to insert image brackets. They should look like (img)(/img), but with square brackets.
You can now insert the url of any image file you want to add to your signature inside the brackets. I have two brackets, one for the Norwegian flag (http://satwcomic.com/flags/no.gif) and one for the British flag (http://satwcomic.com/flags/gb.gif) separated by a space.
You can find convenient flag icons on Satwcomic.com (http://Satwcomic.com/the-world) or on wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_%28nominal%29).
Thank you! :)
I am so bad at these kinds of things.
No problem. I'm sort of tech-illiterate myself, but having been on several forums before is an advantage when it comes to these things.
How about a background image on the forum page? A grey background dosen't seem to be fitting SSSS-comic standard. Could we use one from Minnas gallery(With her permission of course)?Minna said she'd be willing to donate some art. She's very busy at the moment, with the comic and print drive, so it might be a while.
Went ahead and changed the heading.
The comic link will be harder to implement, but I know where I can look to learn how to do it.
The comic link works. Thanks, Eich! That one's just a placeholder until I can get an actual button made.
You know what would make a nice upgrade if it's ever doable? Formatting the forum name, link, etc. in the typeface Minna uses in the comic's dialog bubbles. IIRC, she designed it herself, but it looks a bit like Albertus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albertus_(typeface)), the one used in The Prisoner (including open, "Greek"-style lower-case E's).
That one's just a placeholder until I can get an actual button made.
Hmm... I'm not sure if I can add fonts or not. I'll have to do some snooping around to figure that one out. If we can, Minna might be willing to donate some letters, or someone could try their hand at designing some letters.
Wouldn't it be better/easier to get a partly transparent banner image placed in the top centre?
Something like this (https://images.indiegogo.com/file_attachments/853139/files/20140912193802-a_book.jpg) (but mostly transparent).
Oooooooooooh I just saw the folders change to the SSSS symbol. :D
The unread ones are red!
Fimbulvarg, do you remember making them a specific size?
By then, I had read all the new posts. So when there are unread posts in a given folder, will the stars be a different color? (Before, blue folder icons = unread posts.)
Yes siree, I remember making them about the same size as the former icons. I can see now that they might need to be scaled down a bit.Only a little. The main thing is that there're still two folders on the front page, under the boards. One says "No new posts," the other, "New posts."
We have a set of gray stars equivalent to the grey folder icon.

Hmm yeah. Let's ... *looks at crammed calendar* ... Let's schedule an update in December, yeah?Sounds good to me. Took me a while to put the first ones up anyway, haha.
It's doable.
I was going to do that for a weird dream talk thread, but forgot. The GD is really good for coming up with thread ideas so, if it comes up again I'll be sure to try it out. As it is now, I'm not sure if it would break the middle of a conversation or not. :P I think Noako's moved a couple posts into new topics before, so there's at least one person who might be able to help with more specific questions.
Sounds good to me! As time permits, I'll reread the GD for any topics that pop out at me.Good luck! (He sounds pretty awesome, by the way ;D)
(Meanwhile, I have to help my dad set up some Excel spreadsheets for a real estate project of his. :P He's a brilliant, stubborn, cranky, introverted 75-year-old retired Naval officer... which is to say, I love him to bits but we often butt heads. He's basically equal parts John McCain and overprotective Onni, with a Carl Sagan-esque New Age streak in there just for chuckles. Pray for me...)

Yeah it's fairly simple but time consuming, seeing as I need to search the thread for the individual posts... I'm also not sure if I can move the topics into their own thread, or into existing one... I'll look at it later today, or tomorrow.
So if we see topics that we think deserve to be sliced off into their own threads (like "weird dreams"), should we PM you (admins Noako/Eich) with the URL of the earliest message in that topic? Or would you prefer that we handle it some other way?
adding a langages part to the forum members profiles
We have that, see page 5 in this thread. In the signature field you need to insert image brackets: Norwegian flag (http://satwcomic.com/flags/no.gif)

Is the owner of this site ok to let you borrow those flags?
Are there all nations?
Flags are generally public property, if I'm not wrong, and Humon looks like a nice girl anyway.Flag designs are usually exempt from copyright. The renditions of that design that you can find on Wikipedia/Wikimedia have usually been put in the public domain, while others' - especially more "artistic" - renditions can be copyrighted and may or may not be available for a license fee. Causing traffic on one website (say, SatW) to have someone's browser display a page purportedly hosted on another (say, this forum) is called "bandwidth theft" and, as long as traffic has to be paid for, a demonstrable damage the owner of the former site may sue for.

There's a reason why, over on the wiki, I strongly recommed (http://sssscomic.wikia.com/wiki/Flags#Use_of_Flag_Icons_in_this_Wiki) to download flag images from Wikipedia and upload them to the Wikia server itself after some editing.
...Oops. Should we switch to different flags, then?I think the first thing to get pinpointed is whether flag icons can be uploaded to and served off the PCRiot.com server (my guess: Eich, but not the random user, can upload them as "emoticons" - which raises the question whether the click-to-add list atop the window to edit your postings will suddenly fill the entire screen ...).

If they can, we can grab them off Wikipedia royalty free like I proposed for the wiki.
If not, we would have to have the forum load them off some other server. I didn't check yet, but I don't think that Wikia will be happy to serve them just because wiki and forum have largely the same user base ...
Mine are now hosted by photobucket though, won't that suffice?Well, I didn't say that finding a provider willing to host cross-site icons is downright impossible, though there's some conceptual problems with it (user behavior getting logged on both servers and false CSS alerts when you run an analyzer) ...
Photobucket reserves the right to terminate your Membership at any time (even if you've paid), without warning for any or no reason, with or without prior notice or explanation and without liability"Thanks for the money (and the imagery you just uploaded and granted us permission to use for free), now get out." ???
Photobucket has the right to place advertising, promotions, notifications or identifiers and watermarks on or near your Content, and how and what are up to us.Comical effects of shoe-horning a 700x300 ad banner into a 20x15 flag icon aside, the flags are symbols of the respective governments' authority and having it tacked onto a commercial is exactly the kind of use that might be considered illegal by said government. Not very likely that they will take legal action (it would be quite difficult to prove intent of any involved party), but still ...

Hmmm, could our mods transfer the language-related threads in General Discussion to the Language Board? The Language Exchange Program and Learning Russian threads at least definitely belong there.
You do want to put all your eggs (software, content) into one basket (server) if your goal is to make an omelette (everything coming together into a web page) in the fastest and simplest way.
Flags are now in the forum's database. Check the first post of this thread for details on how to use them.It works! Once the British flag is uploaded, will it be found under :england:?
It works! Once the British flag is uploaded, will it be found under :england:?It's now :uk:
What about the American flag? Or is that unnecessary?I added some variants in English because there are so many English speaking countries. "America" is the name of two continents. The United States is a country, so I made it :usa:.

Okay, so there's an Australian flag (yay!). Could I have a South African one, too, please? And what's the code for the Dutch flag?SA's loaded up :southafrica: = :southafrica:
You could add the flag of the Vatican for those who know some Latin :pDone.

It is Netherlands, right? "Dutch" has always confused me.
Yayyy, it works! And now I can put more flags!Oh Hades, Hel and Tuonela (and what other realms of the dead there are), Nimphy wants to take on world domination...
Eich... Could we also have a little :world: emoticon? I need it for... purposes.
Oh Hades, Hel and Tuonela (and what other realms of the dead there are), Nimphy wants to take on world domination...
This is news to you?Yep. The "domination" part. I always knew she liked to kill everyone, but actual rule, or well, tyrany... On hindsight, you might be right.

Went ahead and moved a bunch of those posts about etymology over to the Language Board.
I don't like being that person, but where it mentions the update up at the top, it should say "you're" instead of "your"...*Cough* Aheh! o_o'
(I just find grammar mistakes really distracting, sorry)
OK, so how do I indicate I'm fluent in American English and learning "Proper" English (UK)? [yes, it's a joke]
I tried USA, United States, UK, United Kingdom ... I see there are flag codes for both but I don't know the magic words.
Thanks :)
Stupid question: Is there a way to have a link on the forum page (pretty much like the link to the comic, top right), but only for your (logged in) self? I have certain places within this site *cough*wiki discussion*cough* I'ld like to be able to jump to directly ...I know there are options for users to customize certain things: their profiles (obviously), the site theme, etc. But I don't think there's any way to customize links.
(Yes, OK, there's bookmarks in one's browser, but .......)
yes it is and it makes me sad :portugal:I'll add them in.
brazil is also absent :brazil:
:angola: and :mozambique: seem to also be missing. Poor portuguese speakers with no options :-[
could someone who may add them? pretty please o:)
hi, this seems to be the thread where people ask for more flags! people have told me that i speak a completely different language from spanish, so if you don't mind could you upload the cuban flag? (http://satwcomic.com/flags/cu.gif)Yep. Thanks for uploading the picture!
Could you add a post with all the flags and their :NAME: so we don't ask you some already available?Ohh, that's a great idea!
Perhaps The Ecology of Monsters (http://ssssforum.pcriot.com/index.php?topic=209.0)
could merge with Origin of monsters (http://ssssforum.pcriot.com/index.php?topic=30.0)?
While the titles are different, there seems to be a lot of overlap between the two.
I'd like to see the Irish Flag as well (started learning Irish Gaelic during the last days). Shall I search for a pic for making your work easier?I can find that one pretty easy. I'm travelling today, though, so it might make things a little faster if you do a quick search.
Would this one be legal?clker.com states in their terms that any material uploaded needs to be in the public domain, so the sign language icon is OK. (Though they both made me go "what's HP gotta do with sign language!?" for a moment. ::) )

Icons-Land, however, distributes their flags as linkware, i.e., you have to provide a link back to them "with credits" (prevents just making the icon itself into a link) wherever the icon shows up. Hence the verbiage around the one I put on the wiki (http://sssscomic.wikia.com/wiki/Flags#Flags_as_Language_Symbols).
This might be better? Though the actual shape is not 16*16IIUC Eich already has a set of national flags available from famfamfam, just didn't install them all right away. I grabbed the same *.zip for potential use, and there seems to be an ie.gif and an ie.png included ... ?
Sign language one is too big. Any chance somebody could scale those? I have no knowledge for that.
Well I've tried. Maybe it should be just a little bit bigger, eh?Thanks. Got them both uploaded, now.

Also, any chance of having Ukrainian flag? I suspect I'm the only one who needs it here, but still, that would be very nice of you :)
Thanks. Got them both uploaded, now.

Um, I feel kind of bad for being so pushy, but could the discussion on height be chopped off from the introduction thread? Starting from around hereabouts (http://ssssforum.pcriot.com/index.php?topic=131.msg13065#msg13065), but still keeping PzKw IV G's introduction (http://ssssforum.pcriot.com/index.php?topic=131.msg13312#msg13312) in its proper place?
I'm not sure if that discussion warrants its own thread, or is more of a General-Discussion-y type topic.

How about making it a general "how do you look"-thread? (The new thread where I'll move the posts, ofc.)
How about making it a general "how do you look"-thread? (The new thread where I'll move the posts, ofc.)That sounds fun, actually.
The Scriptorium thread is having a discussion on referring to female superiors, should we move it?
"Titles and formal forms across the world?"
And it's the best. :)
Many good suggestions, but I chose Nimphy because they notified me of the problem in the first place.
I also wrote a little note about the new thread in the first (Eich's) post, simply because almost every time I split topic people get confused.
Hi, Noako. Can you please merge Mayabird's recently created "Character Development: Mikkel" (http://ssssforum.pcriot.com/index.php?topic=231.0)thread into the older one?
As you can see from the 2nd and 3rd posts in that thread, I've cleared it with her. You wouldn't need to move those posts, just her first one. Hopefully, this will let that older thread jump to the list of newly updated ones.
(...) the correct form is:

You can see your link in my SV PPC Test Board for proof. (Flash isn't allowed on phpBB.com apparently.)
Also, are you aware that you need to set the Allow use of [FLASH] BBCode tag in posts option on the Post settings page of the General tab as well as a forum-based permission to allow Flash?
Hello! Found this amazing comic some time ago and as I was creating my forum profile I noticed there was no Slovak flag. 99.9% sure I'm the only one that would need it, but in any case, would the o mighty forum Thors add one please? Thank you!I tried adding it in, but the site is giving me a 500 error when I try to upload it.
P.S. Tried using :slovakia: :slovakrepublic: and :sk: nothing works. If it's already on the forum, under what can I find it? Or can I just use the image/link in my signature that I posted here? Thanks.
(Possibility? From Humons SatW (http://satwcomic.com/flags/sk.gif) )
I tried adding it in, but the site is giving me a 500 error when I try to upload it.
I'll try again later, and see if I can get it uploaded then. I'm using :slovakia: as the flag code.
I noticed when i was replying to one of the pages that i seemingly couldn't link a video in a fashion that a youtube player is displayed at the page itself.
Is this even possible? If not i think it could be a worthy prospect to look in to if you guys have the time and patience.
The forum would need a mod to embed video players. There is one for downloadHERE (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/?mod=2681).Yep! Known about that one for a while, just been hesitant to install it because I'm afraid of messing something up. I'll look into it next week when I have some time after MAGFest.
Disclaimer: I have no idea if the mod is stable or safe. Use at your own peril!

Hello, all!
Forum-Thor Eich has granted my prayers and invested me with Skald powers to arrange forum content. I can now:
* Split threads into new topics (even non-contiguous posts)
* Name new threads resulting from thread-splitting
* Merge threads (which will be named/dated after the oldest post of both threads)
* Move threads to different boards.
I can't:
* Change or delete anyone's individual post
* Delete, lock, or unlock threads
* See or deal with anyone's PMs
* Do major fixes -- the kind Eich, hushpiper, and JoB have dealt with.
Over the next few days, I'll be working to consolidate topics, eliminate duplicate threads, or create new threads for emerging topics. But before I act, I'll do my best to notify the original thread creators and give them the right of refusal or to name the newly split-off thread.
Please go on posting requests to this thread. But also feel free to PM me if you have questions or want me to undo a change.
I'm not sure I understand why play by post was split. Are we going to have multiple play threads going now?Ditto! Is there a limit on how long threads can get? I know on other forums I've been, a thread sometimes reaches its max # of posts and a new one is made to continue it... So I assume that's what happened but it looks like they're BOTH still getting posted in?

The post in the old thread was just Sunflower saying that she split it, I believe.Yep.
I understand why there's a 'current' thread - I think because it makes it easier for newcomers to understand, and not have to go through all the pages to get to the current game rules.
I don't understand, though, why there are three threads.
Yep.Alright, but I suggest old threads are closed. That way people can view them and we won't have greenhorns coming in and frankensteining old play by post threads because they didn't know they were defunct.
Um... I was just reveling in my new thread-splitting powers... :-[
(Also, *later* I learned from reading the SMF documentation that for faster performance they recommend to keep threads at no more than about 2,000 posts -- maybe under 1,000 if the site is slow to load. But I can't claim I knew that at the time.)
When the Play By Post thread was created, I don't think anyone realized how massively popular it would become. (I didn't, anyhow.)
Now that we do know, those of you who are active in Play By Post might want to set some ground rules about when to create new threads, and whether to lock old ones. (Meanwhile, I need to look more into how thread-locking works -- not sure I can do that.)
Personally, I'd like to see only one game thread open at a time -- but make the others still *viewable* because some of the answers were so clever.
Also, wasn't one of the games a collaborative fiction? I personally think that should be saved for posterity even if most old game responses aren't.
Regardless of my opinions, the wishes of active PBP participants should prevail.
I'll also post a condensed version of this notice in PBP. Meanwhile, thanks for being good sports!
If I may... I suggest a board for play-by-posts. The older games go there and are locked, or maybe left open. They are worth keeping, I believe (well, most of them), and some like the acronym game or the last letter game may even be revived? Other stuff like the roleplay, though, I think has to be closed - that really needs no Frankesteining.I think Eich as ruled out any new boards (and if he did add one I would prefer a creative content board).
Our heroic admin, Eich, has been trying for a while to install Cyrillic -- but no luck.(Actually UTF-8, which would allow the entirety of Unicode including Cyrillic and CJK (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plane_%28Unicode%29#Basic_Multilingual_Plane), but also Khmer, various Indic and Indonesian scripts, Arabic, Linear A and B, Cuneiform, KLI pIqaD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klingon_alphabets#ConScript_Unicode_Registry), ...)
Is it possible for the forum to insert replies to specific posts immediately after the post, rather than append them to the end? Or is there a good reason for not doing so that I am overlooking?

Maybe.. I don't know. A *small* group of general top level threads? So that you know where to start if you're going exploring?sparked a thought in my all-too-ignorant brain: Might it be possible to create thread tags in the categories above, as certain thread titles can be somewhat… non-indicative?

* Canon / Creator's Commentary / Known Facts
* Gossip / Speculation
* Real World Background
* Fan Art

* Grumpy Criticism
So this post in the comments on pg 273:sparked a thought in my all-too-ignorant brain: Might it be possible to create thread tags in the categories above, as certain thread titles can be somewhat… non-indicative?
If it isn't possible for [ insert highly technical reason of which I am ignorant here ], then it isn't, but I thought it would be worth looking into.
I had a "Forum Index" thread that was intended for that exact purpose, but I'm currently unable to update it since anything with more than 2 or 3 links appears to be marked as spam and won't get submitted...Ummmmmmmmmmm… Not what I meant.
On some other BBs I've lurked upon, the thread name is followed by what's called a "tag", a short description categorizing the thread's subject/contents. Like on a gamer forum, one tag would be "Gamer Tales", while another would be "Player Help", and so on.
One wouldn't have to tag ALL threads, to start with. Make the system available and users can tag their own threads when they start them, and mods could possibly spend a few minutes whenever they can looking at old threads and tagging particularly interesting ones. Will the tagging mod be able to account for the differences in syntax? Like, if someone tags a thread "fan art" and another person writes "fanart", will the system be able to consolidate those? We would also need to come up with a list of agreed-upon tags that everyone can use, otherwise it won't really solve anything if people tag the same things with different words...
I have to admit that, for me, this is one of the most jarring aspects of the forum: there is no upvote button.
IIUC Eich already has a set of national flags available from famfamfam, just didn't install them all right away. I grabbed the same *.zip for potential use, and there seems to be an ie.gif and an ie.png included ... ?

One other solution might be to group the threads into folders (along the lines of Amity's categories) within the 5 main boards. But unlike LooNEY, I don't have prior experience with BBs, so I don't know how feasible that would be.
As I am doing some progress with kurmanci-kurdish I wonder whether this magic flag device includes a kurdish flag? Not as far as I can see, but the version on Wiki[mp]edia is marked as being in the public domain ...
I guess that goes here
not an urgent thing at all, but giving points (cookie-points?) to people is indeed nice
It was very wise from Eich to devise funny names for the post quantity based titles, rather than titles suggesting some kind of hierarchy.
Apart from the "Ruler of a Derelict Airport" part :P Not that I have any complaints with the forum titles.
I could argue that since the airport is derelict, then the title is basically meaningless...
I could argue that since the airport is derelict, then the title is basically meaningless...even derelict, it's a pretty large place you can do things in ;)
sorry for double post, but: we have 2 introduction threads. Maybe we should merge them, or lock one of them?
(edit: by "we" I mean those whose powers may suffice for the task)
You bring up a good point. But the intro threads have slightly different purposes, which is why I think we could justify them both. The *Language Board* intros are for people to introduce themselves in all the languages they speak (or are learning). Those seem pretty popular despite the ongoing use of the plain-vanilla Introduction thread. The issue has already been settled in the "plain-vanilla Introduction thread".
Does anyone else have an opinion on this?

Maybe start a thread for each page in SSSS? Just to continue enything thats going on, now that Disqus comments are time limited. Any interesting bits regarding that page, or not, could be transferred to that thread, and also make comments, issues ect. easier to backtrack.
Just a idea, I've got nonexistent experience in managing forum or any spontaneuosly generating data, it may be bad one.
But what for??????????????HOW DID YOU DO TH- oh i see now. I see.
Also a question, does youtube embedding not work as I tried embedding a video last night and it wouldn't work.
Flags for the ex-Yugoslavia countries?
Meanwhile, I've seen occasional requests for Sindarin Elvish, Quenya, Vulcan, and Klingon. Are there flags for constructed languages? How about Esperanto?Esperanto, being in real-world use, does have symbols, including the "green star" flag (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esperanto_symbols). Klingon also has a flag, albeit a deliberately unsettling one (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Klingon_Empire_Flag.svg). Vulcan is a member of the Federation most of the storytime, so the Federation's flag (http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Flag_of_the_Federation) essentially snarfed up all the screentime that a Vulcan flag could have gotten. ;)
I'd kinda like to mod the forum such that, instead of asking for your gender in your profile and when you sign up, you instead select which pronouns you'd like to be referred to by. It'd be nice for those minnions who are genderqueer/trans and those who just don't feel like disclosing their gender, by sidestepping the whole "but what gender ARE you?" question and getting right to the question that actually matters: "how do we refer to you?".
The question of how to refer to people has been a big one from the start--there's a couple established forumgoers that many people still don't know how to refer to cough-Fim-cough--and it'd also be useful if we could display that underneath people's avatars so there's a handy reference while posting.
Such a mod does not exist at present afaik, but there are some that are similar which simply add new genders, like this one: http://www.animeneko.net/projects/smf/ I've gotten comfortable enough with the forum's innards at this point that it seems doable on the face of it, at least, and would be fun to play with. I just wanna know if you guys think it'd be a good fit for this community.
Moreover, there are multiple possibilities of what an "other" might want to be called. Haiz' "ze/hir" is one example, but I imagine some would prefer "they" to more novel terms.
I like the idea. I'm 100% comfortable with a female gender and set of pronouns, but I can think of several members off the top of my head who don't fit the existing categories. Moreover, there are multiple possibilities of what an "other" might want to be called. Haiz' "ze/hir" is one example, but I imagine some would prefer "they" to more novel terms.
As long as it doesn't remove any existing options, it sounds good to me, at least as an experiment.
Been meaning to do that for a while, actually.
I'll go ahead and do it.
Why was that there to begin with, actually? I was eyeing it every time I put a news announcement on there, but didn't wanna touch it in case it was important or summat.I was going to add a button on the hotbar, next to Home or something. Found a little guide to help me out, too, just forgot and put it off.
I never really meant to make such a big deal outta my gender but it happened anyway (good job haiz), but I'm really really happy to see you're all so understanding and even willing to do these things you were talking about just now!!! i feel like such an inconvienence but it's not just me so yeah THAT IS GREAT. i'm just being the loudest i guess
See, that there is something I would be a bit worried about if we were to do this (and part of why I bring the whole idea up). I think the community's always been very quietly, casually queer friendly, which is exactly how I like it, and I wouldn't want to make anybody's gender or pronouns into a big deal. The last thing I would want is for it to make things political, for example. I would prefer it be something that just makes communication a bit easier, rather than something that becomes a topic of discussion in its own right, if that makes sense.
On another subject--I'm playing around with the theme on a test site! Check it out:I clicked on the link and got a notice "Not ready yet!" and an Admin login slot. Should we log in there, or just wait till more is available?

I definitely don't want to be yelling about it either? I actually have a ton of anxiety about being out most of the time, so. It'll most likely be whispering from the rooftops from me ahahahaha:c :c :c
"im not a girlllll im so sorry" -literally me
That's why I'd like to take the pulse of the community, so to speak, and see what everyone thinks. If you feel like it would put you in the spotlight too much, or if it seems like it'll bring up controversy, I'll code it but won't put it on the site. No pressure on anybody here. :)nooo don't worry, do the thing!! I'm always hogging the spotlight on my own anyway because i'm absolutely hopeless. do the thing
Alphabetical sorting / subsections to member list ? Not that necessary, but it would be a convenience feature.you can change the sorting by clicking on the various categories, like username, position, number of posts, date registered..... but the position clicking is weird
-C
Personally I would be fine with everyone being referred to as "it/they".
Eh, wouldn't bother me. My point was more that this seems really unnecessary.Well, I for one have gotten several messages about my gender and how I want to be referred to...... but I guess putting my pronouns in my title works pretty well too? since I know sending PMs to people about these kinda things can be pretty intimidating
i can't register on the test site, but from the little i can see it looks really neat!

I like the color scheme! Looks great, Hush :DI tried it on my smartphone, and the background doesn't appear at all, so I don't think that will be a problem (unless people are intending to access the forum specifically to see the background image? nah...). Otherwise it looks the same on my phone as it does on my computer (and it is a very pretty color scheme, indeed!).
Though I wonder if the background image would make it harder to load on phones/tablets? I know some people use those to access the forums...

The only thing I don't care for is the underlying graphic on the page underneath the header. I am easily distracted and I find that pattern distracting and slightly annoying. (I like the just-plain-white background to our current postings. But that's just me.)

I love it! :'D Also, I'm in love with the button to the comics.
I only wish I knew how to help with this kind of thing so I could work on it.
Either way, I agree, I think it's good enough to start using now, and we can make adjustments when problems or complaints arise.
It looks nice, but I am perversely bugged that I can't shift the overlying features to expose different parts of the background [WAS: water trolls (like Moomi-Pirhana)]. Would that be possible?
Will it be the same theme all the time, or periodically changed?
Would a translucency slider / preference be practical for individual users?
Is Disqus-like comment organization possible with the Simple Machines engine?
Just throwing out ignorant or curious questions, not *trying* to make life overly "interesting."
Can the mobile version maybe be tweaked a little? Specifically the top right corner, which looks like this:
(I'll probably change back to the other theme, but still)
It's actually more than just mobile doing that--it shows up jumbled on desktops too. We're looking at fixing that bug now!
For those who don't like change, find the new theme too distracting, or otherwise want the old theme back: First off, do let us know! The theme can be tweaked, and we'll take any suggestions or requests under advisement. Second, you can change what theme you are personally using on the forum under Profile > Account Settings > Look and Layout > Current Theme > (change). You're totally free to switch back to the other theme if you feel the need.
The top right isn't looking all that good on my laptop.

I feel like the background for quotes doesn't stand out quite as much as it should. That might just be a personal taste thing, though.

Also, it might be a good idea to move the theme discussion to this thread (https://ssssforum.com/index.php?topic=160.0) if it gets too long, just to keep things organized.
ETA: Also, personally I don't have a problem with it but the text in the dropdown menus is quite tiny, some members might appreciate a larger font especially since it's a serif :)
I like the new forum theme, but it doesn't seem to work for me while I'm logged in. Like, I can only see the new theme when I'm browsing as a guest for some reason.Do you instead see the same theme you've had before the change? If so, my guess'ld be that you expressedly selected that theme in your preferences, and need to switch back to "Forum or Board Default" to have such changes apply to you automagically.
Made the sub-menu font size a bit larger. ;)
Also, I finally got that nasty upper box regulated (hooray!)
Changes will go live as soon as hushpiper makes them live :D
And now I go to SLEEP. Good night, everyone!
Thanks again to Eriaror for the excellent work on the theme and for the quick bugfixes-- ...

My friend suggested making the top navigation bar scroll down with the scroll bar, so it would stay at the top of your window while you're looking at the bottom - I can see how that could be useful, but also how it could be annoying. Thoughts? Has this been suggested before?
[...]
If you want to have text areas be semi-transparent, make sure that the actual text is backed by solid white fill somehow. There are four places where I see the need for that with this design:
- quote boxes
- the text box I'm typing in now :/
- the breadcrumb bar at the top ("The Stand Still, Stay Silent Fan-Forum » Topics » Forum and Website Discussion » etc...")
- the topmost upper right summary box ("Show unread posts since your last visit," etc)
I don't know how easy this is to fix in this CMS. But if you really want it to look its best, the text contrast is key.
I'm pretty sure that that indicates "People in this column are the author of the reply next to their name" rather than "<insert topic author here>".Good point. It is the same on SMF's own forum (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php).

Don your fireproof underwear before reading what Wikia users had to comment (http://community.wikia.com/wiki/User_blog:Rupert_Giles/Global_Navigation_Update) on those (http://community.wikia.com/wiki/User_blog:Rupert_Giles/Global_Navigation_January_Update) announcements ...
I LOVE it, it's beautifully designed, and really gives our fandom a nice cover! The forum is no longer without character, it feel like it belongs to Minna! Also, the little news in the upper right hand corner is very useful! ;DThe news box was always there. It held the link to the comic before the new theme was implemented.
On most of these I just went with a background transparent enough that you can see what's underneath but opaque enough to make the text readable. However, what may be fine to read for me, may be hard to read for someone else.

However, what may be fine to read for me, may be hard to read for someone else.Sooo maybe making that translucency slider would really be a good idea, I'll experiment with that today.
- The grayish watercolor texture in the textboxes feels stupid now, I'll probably change it to pure white
- I could easily back the breadcrumbs with some white
- The quote boxes seem fine to me, they were almost like this since the forum exists
- I could maybe make the upper box a bit more opaque. Just a bit, because I dooon't want to hide that picture of the crew... :-\
Is it possible to change the links in "Minna's Comics" above so they open the comics in a new browser window, rather than replacing the forum? (Or rather, to have that be the default setting?)
All the cookies to you, hushpiper!
I didn't have the courage to start making a mobile version, and then you do it. And it's awesome!

So I have a couple of suggestions, but beware that this is just my opinions and should therefore not be regarded if there's a overwhelming opposition to it. Just basing it off my previous "forum experience"
First off, if you can introduce some sort of colourscheme of some sort for nicknames so we can easier see which usergroup a user belongs to (like members, moderators, admins, that sort of stuff) that'd be nice. It's hard to tell sometimes, especially when one's new.

Red for the admins, green for our forum skald / moderator, and yellow for everyone else?
Isn't that what the row of squares two lines below the username already does? Red for the admins, green for our forum skald / moderator, and yellow for everyone else?Yup. The names in the list of online users (at the bottom of the home page) also displays names in different colors, though I think I need to add green for Sunny. Most forums tend to limit you to something like 50, 100 or 500 per user. May seem like a lot, but you would be surprised how quickly they fill up. Numbers tend to depend on whether the forum counts each message as 1 or each conversation as 1.
AH HA HA! (Embarrassed Torbjorn face.)
I actually have over 500 PMs, if you count "Sent" as well as "Inbox." Is that too many? Do I have to join a 12-step program for Excessive PM'ing? :-[
By default, 4,294,967,296 personal messages may be sent on a forum.Ah, unsigned 32 bit integer as an ID, apparently. Guess that means that you can only reduce the limit.
Is there a way to have messages to be shown "in a conversation" but have the conversation over several pages instead of aaaalll at once?
Because um I have some very long conversations that are getting very slow to load.... i should probably choose some of the other options but I'm not sure which of them I'm after
No, I don't think so -- I've tried.yeahhh it struck me right after posting that that that's what I had to do, and I did.
The only workaround I can think of at the moment is periodically not "Reply" to someone but create a new message (even if you have to copy-and-paste in what you're replying to). I know that's not ideal.
Is it possible to have longer chains in PMs? so you can see the whole response thread, instead of just the previous post?
I am running a forum game involving lots of PMs and I am having trouble keeping track of things at times.
For the heck of it I just went through the members of the forum and a lot of them have never posted. Though I suppose it can be a "if they ever want to come back" or "maybe they are just lurking", but as I have a forum of my own most of the time those members end up being hacked or they just end up using a username someone else might want. Thouhg the forum is public (some privacy would be nice) it would be good to have some kind of rules for inactives that never introduced themselves or posted anything. Sometimes someone will join only to answer to one thread, but at least they posted once. I'm kinda rambling now, its more a suggestion then an improvement, though it really depends what you think of it....
I'm also active in another forum. There, accounts are deleted if they exist for more than three months and still have 0 posts. However, I don't know if there is a technical solution that is doing this or if someone has to sit down once in a while and delete all these accounts manually.
That is along the lines of what I was thinking. There are a lot of people that post very infrequently and so would not get 10 posts within a month.
Yep, I was looking through the language threads and there are specific requests for the Serbian and Macedonian flags. (I know most linguists consider Serbo-Croatian a single language, and we do already have a Croatian flag -- but *politically* the countries are certainly very different!)
Hiya, I was putting language flags in my profile, and seems there's no other Latvians around because that one's missing. Any chance it could be uploaded?Latvian flag uploaded.
Do we have a post concerning key comic pages, like the maps of the known world, important pages with information, key plot developments in the comic? The world info pages have links here : http://www.sssscomic.com/index.php?id=about ;)
It might help finding information more easily.
Would it be possible to get a dark theme for the forum? I prefer not to stare into light bulbs while I use my computer. :)There's a few add-ons you can get for Chrome and Firefox (and I imagine other browsers) that invert the colors in your browser. Just search for "night mode extension"

Coincidence, because that's exactly what I've been working on!Oooh that's awesome! :D will it work on mobile browsers too?

ETA: soon. ;)
We have a request from a new member for a flag for the Malay language. It's spoken in several southeast Asian countries, but Malaysia is probably the most logical candidate for a country flag to indicate Malay.
On a similar topic, we need a language flag for Arabic. The Saudi Arabian flag is probably the best candidate, since it's the home of Islam's holiest sites (such as Mecca), and the Koran remains the standard for the Arabic language. (Also, IIRC there actually is an Arabic phrase on the Saudi flag.)
I'd actually argue for Egypt's flag to be used for Arabic, since apparently Arab entertainment, like films and things are done in Egyptian Arabic, and not Standard Arabic. I could be wrong, though.
Sure, I don't see why we should not add the Egypt flag, it is the most widely spoken Arabic dialect. And I guess if we were to narrow down the gulf dialect we could just settle for a Saudi flag. Not the best solution but I guess it could work. For Navajo, I suppose we could use the flag of the Navajo Nation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Navajo_Nation)?
In case of the Navajo and Visaya though, I haven't asked about them because they lack actual flags to represent them (I'm not entirely sure about the former, and the latter could settle for a Filipino flag).
So, due to the HUGE popularity of the self-inserts, I'd like to propose making a sub-board in the main SSSS board for just that entire thing. I counted and just on the first two pages alone there are 9 threads about self-inserts - this is totally fine, but maybe it's time to give them their own space? That way people who are not involved in the various projects around it can avoid it easily, and those that are, can find it easily.
Thoughts?

I think it's a great idea. But 1) I don't know how to make a sub-board and 2) it should probably be Eich's call because it's the first time we've considered such a thing. If we don't hear back from him within a day or two, I'll PM him with a reminder.I think a child board would be a good idea at this point. Perhaps one containing all creative projects? That way there could still be a substantial amount of content in the board. On the other hand, keeping it just for SSSSona stuff would keep the content simple and easy to navigate. Anyone want to weigh in?

More specific categorising makes for easier navigation, but equally we don't want to split everything up too much as it actually gets counter-intuitive. A 'creative projects' (or synonym) board seems like a good idea to me.

A 'creative projects' (or synonym) board seems like a good idea to me.The only problem I can see with that is that there currently are two kinds of "creative projects" threads popping up - ones related to SSSS and ones that are not related. Would we move them both onto the same board? Keep them separate?

I'd prefer one for just SSSSona stuff. If it was just one board for all "creative projects" it would just get oversaturated with the SSSSona stuff. And I don't think we have enough "creative project" threads that we'd need a new board for them. Two child-boards sounds a bit excessive, honestly.I second this. The self-insert trend has grown into something huge and could use the space, and maybe an attempt at organization so it's easier for newbies to get into it... and seeing as it's not exactly comic canon, it would make sense. but there are not enough non-sona 'creative projects' to warrant it its own board, in my opinion.

the "new topic" or "reply" button is being very very red compared to everything else, and maybe it's just being late but it kinda bothers me? i mean it makes sense for it to stick out but... hlepIt is noticeably redder!

On the other hand, keeping it just for SSSSona stuff would keep the content simple and easy to navigate. Anyone want to weigh in?Just one for SSSSonas sounds more logical to me. A significant amount of threads in the SSSS Board are at least in part creative stuff, like, more than half of the threads on the first page. Creating a sub-board for all this would be too broad in my opinion.
Replied here (https://ssssforum.com/index.php?topic=10.msg49255#msg49255). :)
So it seems like most people are in favor of making a self-insert sub-board, do the mods wants to make a final decision on this?People seem to be in favor of a SSSSona Child Board, so we'll go with that.
People seem to be in favor of a SSSSona Child Board, so we'll go with that.
I'll go ahead and make the board, if someone can move all the SSSSona threads into it.
I think the forum is older than "a few months" now, so we should maybe consider removing "This will be an important board in the first few months of activity, so check in frequently, and help out if you can!" from the Forum discussion board's description. :)
I've done some tiny ninjafixes over this week, summing it up here:All fixes are live, if you don't see them do a hard refresh (Ctrl+F5, pretty much everywhere), or clean your browser's cache. ;)
- Fixed the little border issue with the child board on the main board index. ✔
- Made a new board index star variant, it appears when there are no new posts in the board itself but there are some in its child board: ✔
(https://ssssforum.com/Themes/SSSSlight/images/on2.png)- Made the new-posts stars appear for the child board lists as well on the mobile layout. ✔
- Gave the page numbers a solid white-ish background to aid readability/usability. ✔

Thank you for this, I spent 10 minutes the other day looking at the SSSS forum because I thought I didn't see some unread board somewhere, but it turned out to be the child board. ;D
(It should appear in the "what do the icons mean" section of the homepage, between the list of boards and the "Info Center", shouldn't it?)

Hi! I was wondering if there's a way to stick quotes in a spoiler?
Is there any way to add a "preview" button to the signature-editing area? I've been messing with mine a lot and it's kind of inconvenient to have to open one of your posts to check if what you're trying to do actually came out.Your profile (https://ssssforum.com/index.php?action=profile) (that you can directly jump to with Profile -> Summary from the menu bar) shows the "working" version of your signature, but it's still not a preview, either (i.e., you have to save the edits first) ...
I don't think so. You can put spoilers within a quote, but not the other way round. I've tried in the Shared Story thread, but it never worked.
Maybe one of our more technically minded people can find a workaround, or change the BBC code to let it work?
If it's not too difficult, could there please be a way to see "unread posts" and "new replies to posts" on the mobile version?I've found a way for unread posts at least:
I've found a way for unread posts at least:I only see the home button, not a minimize button or unread posts. All of my clickable options are icons.I know it's a bit contrived, but it's the only way I've found so far.
- Click the "home" button (shaped like a house, unsurprisingly) on the dashboard at the top just below the title.
- It'll show you the forum main board- on the title screen (which says "Topics"), to the right by the minimise button, is another title that says "Unread Posts".
- Click it, it'll take you to the normal unread posts section.
Alternatively, save the URL of the unread posts page as a bookmark.
I only see the home button, not a minimize button or unread posts. All of my clickable options are icons.Yeah, when you press the home button you should see the forum main board, showing you all the subforums?
Yeah, when you press the home button you should see the forum main board, showing you all the subforums? It only shows up like that on my computer, not on my phone. Thanks for the links. I guess a bookmark's better than nothing.
On the top right of that main board, there's a title that says "Unread Posts". It's a link to that page.
Otherwise, the URLs for unread posts and replies are:
https://ssssforum.com/index.php?action=unread
and
https://ssssforum.com/index.php?action=unreadreplies

Russet, do you think the Malaysian flag is acceptable to use for the Malay language, wherever it's spoken?
I ask because it's also a national language for Indonesia, Singapore, and Brunei.
(We haven't really figured out a good solution for languages that are spoken in multiple countries, or just sections of one, like Catalan. For Latin, we used the workaround of Vatican City.)
Russet, do you think the Malaysian flag is acceptable to use for the Malay language, wherever it's spoken?I agree with Dane here, Singaporean has lots of national languages, all of which are represented by other countries (i.e. UK for English because they learn British English, China for Chinese, Malaysian for Malay, etc), so it probably isn't needed unless specifically requested. They learn standard Malay, so there isn't a noticeable difference between Malaysian Malay and Singaporean Malay.
I ask because it's also a national language for Indonesia, Singapore, and Brunei.
Thank ! ^^

I don't know this is the right place to post this (please move it if belongs somewhere else), but I was thinking: can't the reaction image hoard (https://ssssforum.com/thingies/reactionimages.php) be changed so that it doesn't load any images at first?
I would much prefer to have the page load instantly and display only the menu. Then I can select the character or keyword I'm looking for, and only THEN have any images load (a shorter list, based on my search terms). The wait for all the images to load is pointless, because most people go there with something specific in mind.

I agree, I'd appreciate a quick load more than having all the images available. My elderly, simple-minded computer (with a relatively slow Internet connection) comes to a near-standstill when I try to use the Reaction Images search. ("Standstill," haha. Maybe that was intentional? ;))
After putting a little thought into this, I realized that this can be done easier than what I originally thought, sooo I've done it.(https://40.media.tumblr.com/2daea9894c099c47465a570fc6cb4814/tumblr_inline_nlmsb11uhy1r2g2kx_500.png)

This is actually a new thing. You can't view the general discussion board if you're not logged in (https://ssssforum.com/index.php?topic=590.msg64551#msg64551) :0hahah thanks! XD I just checked the other thread and found out! Phew! I thought my internet was broken or something
I noticed a (short-lived) display problem in a post Piney made to the Introduction Thread.
Her links to the squirrel-cookie emojis, hosted by Google, didn't go through. So instead of the usual icons, we saw this:
It looks fine now, 30 minutes later. Something we need to be concerned about, or just a temporary glitch?
EDIT: I worked it out u___u somehoW everything got zoomed in...but...I didnt even touch anything so how?? ;__; But it's all cool nowMany browsers take Ctrl-"+" as a keystroke to zoom into the current page (and Ctrl-"-" to zoom out), which is obscure, but not entirely impossible to hit by accident. You might want to memorize Ctrl-"0" as the key combo that resets the zoom level to the default.
I know there was a discussion about this before, but I would really appreciate a third gender option for gender-neutral/nonbinary in the profile. Even with they/them written in my signature I still get misgendered a lot and it would be nice to have something official other than just N/A, which could be interpreted as "I don't want to put this information out on the internet" instead of "I'm not a boy or a girl and would appreciate you referring to me as such".

I wouldn't be one to use such an option, but I think we should have it too. The other day I was actually wondering why it wasn't already there.yeah it was shot down becuase "it's not such a big deal"...................... but hopefully there will be a change of heart ^_________^

I've looked a bit into this, and at first sight, the Gender field – being a standard profile field – looks somewhat/pretty much/greatly (further investigation is needed to determine amount) tangled into SMF's inner workings. Sadly that means that adding that third option requires us to find a mod that adds this feature, or modify SMF source files ourselves.

What specifically should that third gender option say? "Other"? "Neither"? I realize those might sound kind of dismissive or blah, but "Gender-neutral" might be a bit long. Also, given the tiny bit I've learned about gender issues, "gender-*neutral*" might not be the right term if some people think of their gender not as *neither* female nor male, but *both* -- or some other third option, I suppose.I suggest "non-binary", although "other" works well enough. "neither" doesn't really fit because there are some people who are literally both

(Regardless of how things get sorted out, I can offer making a Preferred pronouns field, that's just a few clicks. ;) )1) Thank you so much for looking into it!

By fumbling around, I've managed to find about 2-3 places in the code that possibly need to be slightly changed, and I'm far from sure that doing that would do the trick without wrecking anything, sooo I'll need to test things and mess around more and so on.
And even if I found a solution, the very act of messing around this much under the hood is slightly risky, so I'm not sure it'd get put in after all. Probably we'll talk about this and then notify you all when we come to a solution/conclusion. :)

Instead of just a [1], there is now a fancy and a lot more noticeable little bubble displaying your unread PM count in the main menu, which also works on mobile!

that is indeed better! thank you!!
may I be so bold as to request two tiny improvements?
1-adding the possibility to indicate why a comment was edited (so it would read "last edited DateTime: Reason" instead of "last edited DateTime"actually I thought the forum told us when messages had been edited, but apparently not so forget that.

The only reason it wouldn't say that is if you edit within (if I remember correctly) 90 or so seconds of posting because of a buffer setting somewhere in the deep labyrinth of the forum settings that allows you to change without time stamping it for some strange reason. I think it has to do with the fact that we can actually disallow post edits all together.
Hello, fellow admins, mods, and various forum-deities.
I was organizing my large stash of PMs this evening and realized this Forum lacks a function:
It lets us label *received* PMs into folders of choice. (See screenshot.) However, I can't label *sent* messages; the yellow-circled menu doesn't appear when I look at my Sent PMs. This is especially problematic for me because I like to organize my PMs by threads, rather than as individual messages (in which case I'd have 3-4 times as many). So any conversations where I was the last to reply count as "sent" messages that I therefore can't label, regardless of who started the conversation.
Is it possible to update the Forum software so that *sent* PMs can be organized by label just like *received* ones? Or maybe it's already possible and I just didn't realize it?

Yours for better informatics,
Sunflower
Poking around under the hood I've figured out how to change the subjects of PMs. I've also figured out how to recover PMs that you've sent given that the receiver hasn't deleted them. However, I don't know how to make this feature accessible without going in the back way.
As for categories, the way the forum stores the categories is strange. It stores them as recipient's labels in the PM recipient table. Because you are not receiving the PMs, the forum doesn't consider you as able to create a label for it. It only stores the label data with messages you get from someone else. Does that make any sense? I hope that makes sense.

Continuing with small things~:
- Fixed the night mode background on mobile, now it's nice and black-ish, just as on desktop.
- Redone the stars (the little squares) of staff members. SMF doesn't let you specify the star by one usergroup and the star count by another, so admins having 5 or 6 stars didn't really mean anything anyway. Now, we have one star with a label:

The Forum FAQ are now live in the help section (https://ssssforum.com/index.php?action=help)!I am a tiny bit excited because it's the first time I've ever coded something onto the forumEdit: I know the links from the FAQ to other places on the forum don't work, I'm working on it
Aaaaaaaaand urls are fixed \o/
Hi-o! I was set here fro the art thread, just wanted to put in my petition to have the maximum pixel limit increased to 800 for any images posted here, with my case being that may small details on larger pieces are lost and lose their dramatic impact on an image that is far smaller than its original design. Thanks!
I was wondering if it should be possible to leave a placeholder post, when threads get separated and some of the comments move to the new thread.
Something along the lines of. "Posts have been moved to thread 'xy'" with a link to the thread/post in the thread?
Just to make the remaining conversation in the original thread less confusing?
Also, maybe a notice to the writers of the post(s) so they don't think it became deleted, if they haven't dropped in for some time?
Just some ideas. My apologies if this already is in place!
I also wanted to commend you on making the new child board :)
It might become useful at one point and surely increases the general feeling of security on the forum.
Also, it would be nice if there was some sort of mouseover text for the buttons in the "post reply" box. As handy as the little icons are, they're not always clear. (For instance, the red brackets with the cursor).
The buttons do have mouseover textOh yeah I see it now. Thanks!
I think that there should be an option to switch to the desktop version of the site when on mobile. The mobile version works great, you guys have done a really nice job with it, but I sometimes like to see members' post counts, ranks etc. without having to go to each individual profile. (Or, ya know, I could just get on my laptop... :))
And to everyone: For the mobile version, suggestions are even more welcome! I, personally, use that one far less, so I have less chance spotting stuff to improve there.
Personally I've never really understood the intended function of the next/previous topic buttons, I assume they're useful to someone since they exist, but at least on mobile it would be really handy if there could be next/previous page buttons of a similar size. Zooming in to hit that teeny tiny page number link gets old.
I was wondering if the little '…' you click to show more page navigation choices could be turned into, like a page-range (1-10, 1-30, 1-50, 1-100 or the like) drop down menu on the bigger threads/boards for easier navigation when you want to get to, for example, page 500 of 1000?
Sorry if this opens a huge can of worms for you.
Hey, would it be possible to opt out of having one's birthday displayed in the calendar while still keeping the birth date on the profile?
I don't mind/would like to have my age on my profile there for people who might be curious about that but I have a bit of a complicated relationship with my birthday being "on display" in a calendar or "publicly celebrated"...
Yes if you take out the day and the month of your birthday but leave the year it still displays your age.
Tried to do that, it sets it all to 0 and then gives my age as N/A.
If that doesn't work then I'm not sure if you can put it without it showing on the calendar. Sorry :/

It works for me. That's strange...
Yeah that's what kex did. Maybe if you put the month too?
I looked into it just now, doing a "Show my birthday on the calendar" checkbox seems doable, but it'd need some messing around for sure.
Aaaalso I finally stopped being lazy and made those two unread posts buttons display on desktop. (seriously, me, it was like 5 minutes and less than 10 lines of changed code... ffs...)
Wait, since when have the personal text and pronoun etc. boxes been centered? :oSince a day or two? *looks up commit* Yes. I tried how it'd look and it kinda feels better? ...Yeah, it looks a bit nicer. For short texts, definitely. ::)

Maybe I should stop with featurecreeping, it's a bad habit...
Oh, one more thing that seems to have creeped in recently, is it possible to have backgroundless png support back for icons? I liked my scoutrabbit before the white background box it has acquired in the current display...
Oh, one more thing that seems to have creeped in recently, is it possible to have backgroundless png support back for icons? I liked my scoutrabbit before the white background box it has acquired in the current display...I took that one down now. Story of that: I really like the look of box-shadowed avatars, but a white background avatar with box-shadow on white looks kinda off? So I gave avatars this little dimmer whiteish background color... but of course, I forgot the night mode, where that appears as glaring white. Whhhyyy do I always forget about stuff I don't use? :D
Whhhyyy do I always forget about stuff I don't use? :DSee, that's why the developers' personal account settings should be overwritten with random data with every page load. >:D
I really don't want to repeat myself, but since I fixed these guys a bit, I'll put them all here.
Thank you, guys... and don't cease to provide new ideas.

Sooovia neglecting learning for almost a day,I have vectorized all the default smileys! ;D
This means now they won't look horrendous while browsing the forum in night mode, and appear super awesome and crisp on your high-dpi-screen mobile!
I tried to keep them as close to their pixelated counterparts as possible, while refreshing their style to a more modern, flat look. Of course, suggestions for any improvement are much welcome....and now, let me go catch up on learning.
also someone already said it but i feel like 'dynamite' is the wrong smiley code because kr is kroner, as in money, the dollar sign of scandinavia, not sparky boom noises
You feel right, that one was meant to be money sparkles like those floating around Torbjörn here (http://www.sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=137).
I'm sooo glad you liked them! It brings joy into my moody life.
Thanks to everyone who made this possible!

Kindly requesting that a list of emoticons (namely, those that don't show above the post-writing textbox) be added in the Important Info thread (https://ssssforum.com/index.php?topic=416.0) please :) or in another appropriate placeI utilized SMF's additional smiley popup feature and added all the non-flag, non-ribbon ones to it! ;)
For ease of reference.
p.s.: I knew they were buried in this thread, Many of them aren't actually too far away (here (https://ssssforum.com/index.php?topic=16.msg106999#msg106999)) but there might be even more!
edit: there's also the :squirrelcookie: : squirrelcookie: the :hat: : hat: and the :betterhat: : betterhat: and possibly more
edit the 2nd: maybe adding the chapter survivor badges to the list would be cool too?

Replace the Next/Previous Topic with Next/Previous page buttons? (Dunno if this forum system will let you though; but I have never encountered a forum system that has big next/previous topic buttons and no next/previous page button)I think that this is a SMF problem and can't be fixed. :( Or if our skalds do fix it, it would be a relief for gazillion of forums that use SMF.
Idea: Given the number of people who post before introducing, not knowing the Introduction Thread exists, maybe we should have a banner of some kind on the main page?or anyone who just joined, they get a welcome bubble popping up saying to welcome them and tell them to introduce themselves?

Hello there!
Would it be possible to have a Nigerian flag added to the list of flags?
hi hi,That is entirely doable.
I think it had been suggested a while ago, but could we have a link to the "thingies" (at least the important ones like voting links and reaction image hoard) in the navigation bar at the top? That'd be cool
edit: or just to the Thingies directory (https://ssssforum.com/thingies/), since it's there already
Actually what I've been thinking about is a Fandom Links box on the homepage, kinda like the one on the Wiki.Excellent!
Or are some of the thingies so important to access at all times that a menu option is necessary? :)Not really, as long as they're accessible as you've suggested. I thought of the Reaction Image Hoard (which is used for posting replies), but the fad has died down a bit I think, and not so many people use it
I don't have any suggestions for a Yiddish flag, but at the least I can redirect you to the thread with all the flags! -> https://ssssforum.com/index.php?topic=416.0 (https://ssssforum.com/index.php?topic=416.0)
unless an admin here already has all of the national flags in that size and style.

Tadaaaaa! :israel:
Did you make all of those, or are those from another site's/stock/whatever collection? If there's a template for that style of flag, when it comes to Yiddish, the Internet seems to have the least controversy over one that simply has "chai" ("life") on it (חי) and I'd be happy to either make one (I can try to match the style when I'm back at my desk and Photoshop, I'm out and about at the moment) or if there's a template, most basic system fonts should support Hebrew characters with ease.
I can do it. There's a flag in there for "north pole" and I can just overlay it on that. :)
I just have a big folder of them that I inherited from the first admin of the site. It's not like I was watching them type as they set up each and every one, but I do remember that the first ones were added out of the famfamfam icon set (http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/flags/) (I still have a download of the same on my disks).

Since I started The Fanfiction Index (https://ssssforum.com/index.php?topic=943.0) for the purpose of reference, I think it would do its job better if I could get it pinned - by the time I've got a new batch of updates ready, I usually have to dig it out of the second page.
I also had someone suggest starting a thingy for the same purpose - I know people are busy right now, but I'd be willing to look into getting it set up myself if someone could point me to where to go/which code to use.

(You might want to recheck the URL the Wiki's link points to ...)Whoops... Fixed! :D
So because doing forum stuff seemed good for procrastinating on uni work today, we now have a Fandom Links box on the homepage.Yay! It's very useful and convenient! Thank you!
If there's anything important missing, I can add it really quick now. ;)
So I have a little free time today and tomorrow, and decided to tackle some old pet peeves about the forum.
Today: proper page buttons! :))
They're not tiny and unclickable-without-zoom on mobile anymore! Also, there's a previous page (❰) and a next page (❱) button.
Also, is there anybody using the "Previous topic" and "Next topic" buttons? Because if they're just unnecessary clutter I'd get rid of them.
Neato! Thanks, Eriaror!
I don't think anyone uses "Previous topic" and "Next topic," so I'm in favor of deleting them like you suggest. But let's see if anyone speaks up for those buttons...
I'm fine with getting rid of the next/last topic buttons. Personally I don't tend to use them. Maybe the next/last page buttons could be in the same style as them, with text too instead of just a little icon? If that's possible I think it might look better.I agree, the only time I've used the next/last topic buttons was back when I first joined and accidentally mistook them for next/last page buttons.
Got rid of the Previous/Next topic buttons. This is great, Thanks Eri!
Also, added Prev/Next labels to the prev/next page buttons, and changed the icons on them to use FontAwesome, so it appears for everyone. :)
Mobile improvement asked long ago:
If you tap a post, every user field and other thing that's hidden gets displayed. ^-^
(Also avatar gets little bigger so it looks a bit more acceptable. Still could look better though.)
Enjoy! :D
For the mobile version: move the lock topic button, and stop posts from expanding when clicked upon. Currently a bunch of stuff gets displayed when you try to tap a post (even to quote it) and that usually leads to the page reloading since it's a link to that specific post. Also the lock topic button is very easy to tap accidentally while scrolling, it's happened half a dozen times in the RP currently.
I was thinking about some improvements for the voting thingie https://ssssforum.com/thingies/voting.html#
Is it possible to add more art to the "reward" pool? We have a lot of fanart now and I'm sure a) many artists will be happy to allow their art to be used here with credit and b) many minnions will enjoy seeing fanart they may not be familiar with once they vote. It seems like it could be fun and an extra incentive to vote. What do you guys think?

I moved the post expanding function on mobile to a little ellipsis button next to your profile icons, tapping any other part of the post won't expand it from now on, as it should be.

Speaking of the vote thingie, were there any changes to it? Lately, the reward image tends to pop up a split second before my browser opens the new tab to display the TWC page in, spoiling the "reward effect" somewhat ... :squirrelcookie:No. You know what, I'm going to go post something over on the main board. I second Sc0ut's suggestion about artist credit, but perhaps in the short run, we can get teh artists to add that attribution themselves when they crop and resize the image(s) for consideration.
This is the forum's old theme, I set it back to this one while I fix the main one I just broke, while taking off winter decorations.
The current one will be back up soon.
Sorry guys! :-[
These are all excellent poems. I think you should take the spoiler off, though. I've taken to heart a complaint someone made in the Art Museum thread, about their frustration in going back at another time and finding a work they loved. They felt frustrated by having to stop, find the spoilers, and take time opening and closing them.
For this work, a quick scan past would look like a reply post, and perhaps miss some mighty fine poetry.
YMMV.
... I wonder whether it would be possible to have spoiler tags that time out and deactivate (so that their content becomes normal text - or, in the case of the art topics, inline images - of the post) a certain time after posting? Or if the post is displayed within any but the last page of the topic, or somesuch?
P.S.: For sake of considering the merits, IIRC using the browser's search function (Ctl-F) does locate occurences of the keyword within spoilers, even if that spoiler has never been opened, though there's no hint that "thar it blows, but you'll have to open the spoiler to actually see it". But non-text spoiler content cannot be searched for, of course ...
Or does it already exist and have I simply missed it?Do you see that yellow(!?) crescent moon at the right end of the page header? The one Lalli notices following the team around? ;) Try and click it ...
Now I only wish it didn't make the cast drawing in the header look so weird, but I suppose that that's a very minor nitpick.Since it's "night", maybe it's TrollVision™? ;D
