Title: Digger discussion OPEN SPOILERS
Post by: thorny on December 02, 2021, 04:42:25 PM
This thread's for discussion of the webcomic Digger, Comic of the Month for December 2021.

Comic start page here:
https://diggercomic.com/blog/2007/02/01/wombat1-gnorf/
and more basic information about it, including content warnings, in the Comic of the Month thread starting here, if I did this right:
https://ssssforum.com/index.php?topic=1237.msg186608#msg186608
If you want to ask questions or make general comments about Digger without seeing spoilers, I'd think it's better to do that in the Comic of the Month thread, using the spoiler tags there if necessary.

Warning: this thread may contain open spoilers for any part of the comic.

Additional spoiler warning: so may the comments beneath pages of the comic itself.

Just dropping by to say I have started Digger, and what can I say but WHOA,

I love it! Thank you thorny, it doesn’t look like something I would have been likely to take up if I just saw it at random. But, it’s delightful! I have snorted in laughter several times already, even though it’s not really a funny story. Especially with Shadowchild! They are adorable!

I’m very curious to see what Shadowchild turns out to be.

Am I curious?

I liked where the story went with Shadowchild, if that's what you mean.

I think it goes some really interesting places before it gets there, too. I don't know where you're up to, so far.

I meant to pose a Shadowchild type question :)

I’m right where the story goes with SC at the moment (in the monastery in the mountains) and yes, it’s a good alternative, considering what alternatives would be on the table it’s an extremely good alternative. I sort of expected something like that, but it was very well built. Bringing both joy and sadness, like a great story does.

Ah. One that Digger could actually have answered yes! -- and in more than one sense.

Yes. And they do have to grow up, don't they? And to find home.

-- Ursula Vernon manages to take something utterly strange and show it as universal.

As well as sneak things of additional importance in there; sometimes not spelled out. That page where Sweetgrass-Voice says "Idiot! Do you think answers come free in this world?" -- Digger gave Shadowchild answers for free. All the time.

And that looks like the turning point.

So, I have come to the end. What can I say?

Big spoiler for chapter 12 i.e. the last chapter
Spoiler: show
Oh, Ed 😭😭😭

I do think leaving him with the Skins was fitting and weirdly beautiful. He was a skin painter after all.

I would love to see more about this world, although it is my understanding that this will not come to pass. It’s quite incredible to think she was writing on the fly in the beginning!

Agreeing with all parts of that post; including both parts of the spoiler.
