Hi! I do have a name, but if you call me Potato, that would be just dandy. I'm a 17-year international student from Korea, currently studying in a warm country down south. I can speak a weird brew of languages. I count myself fluent in English, can speak fluent Korean (but can't write in it, because I haven't used it in years), speak passable Mandarin Chinese, and have a full one month of Swedish under my belt (I can say hello, but not much of anything else).

Hej! Learning :sweden: since 25th October.

...but I still don't speak any Nordic languages.

My first post on this forum - it seems fitting that it would be one saying hello!

My first language is English, so hi! I guess I don't really need to introduce myself in this one.

Translation:
And... I know french, too, but less than English. I'm Canadian, so of course I know a bit of french! But I'm still a beginner,so I know that I am going to make some mistakes here XD
So... I'll say something about me. I didn't do french immersion courses in high school, just core french courses. Even so, I received my DELF diploma at the level B1 along with the immersion students. I'm Acadian, and my grandparents and my father are Acadian, but only my grandparents have spoken french all their lives. My dad and me learned it later. I did a summer french immersion course for five weeks without any other languages, and I learned a lot! I like to read, write, watch 'Daredevil' and other Marvel things, and also I participate in the sports of curling and aikido.

Whew! That took a lot longer to do than I expected. I feel like I have such a different voice in English and French, mostly due to my clumsiness with the french language, but I resisted in adding anything to the translation to make it sound more natural xD

:uk: Welcome to the board!
:turkey: İnternet forumu hoş geldiniz!
:france: Bienvenue

I experience the different voice with english, too. Especially since (mainly caused by lack of detailed vocab) I often cannot express dark humor in that language. Expressing anything in french and turkish is nothing where I could display any sort of character ;).

If you want to read about people who recently introduced themselves on the board, you can read about them in this topic. There you will also reach a broader audience for introducing yourself.

My native language is English.

Other languages, in the order that I was introduced to them:

Spanish:

Hola, soy WrittenEmber. Gracias. De nada. Gato! Buenas noches.

Translation: Hello, I'm WrittenEmber. Thank you. It's nothing/you're welcome. Cat! Good night.

Why yes, that is the full extent of my Spanish! How could you tell? (Full disclosure: I can also count to six, and am of course familiar with the names of various Spanish foods, since there's a restaurant serving same on every corner where I live.)

French:

Uh, I've forgotten it all. Comment ça va?

I had a friend who was trying to teach me French. He gave me a handful of words, out of context, to practice each time we met. But then we lost touch. And with no context, no grammar, and no phrases, not to mention nobody to practice on... yeah, it's all gone.

(And I spelled it wrong; didn't put the mark under the c in ça va. Barely managed to remember that it was a c and not an s. *am hopeless*)

Irish:

Tá mé bean. Arán agus uisce. ólaim uisce.

Translation: I am an idiot.

Actual Translation: I am a woman. Bread and water. I drink water.

What is wrong with you, Duolingo?! I can't even say hello! (Duolingo is the language learning app I've been using.)

I've actually stopped studying this one, because I realized that although it is available through Duolingo, it doesn't have full features like the other languages have; tap-to-hear, say it back, and the explain function all seem to be missing. Maybe they'll update it later, or maybe I'll go looking for a better lessons source, but for now... meh.

German:

Hallo. Mein Name ist WrittenEmber.

Translation: Hello. My name is WrittenEmber.

I just started. I lack the ability to say anything else, unless I lapse into the kind of weird throwing-words-at-the-wall stuff that I exhibited in Spanish and Irish.

I chose German because I always surprise myself when I'm able to pick up a glimmer of meaning when I attempt to read written passages in German. It makes me feel like I might have some hope of making actual progress, unlike with any other language I've attempted.

Honestly, lack of confidence is my biggest stumbling block. I'm afraid that I'll say something mean or rude or wildly inappropriate -- or, most likely, flat-out stupid -- by accident. And I'm afraid that, when the chips are down and someone actually tries to speak to me oh dear god, are they talking to me? then I won't be able to remember anything and I'll just stare at them like a deer in headlights.

It doesn't help that I'm not that great at conversing with strangers in my native English. *shy*

Nor that it took me ages to become a decent speller in English. It still amazes me when I manage to write something up that doesn't come out sprinkled with red when I run it through spell-check. If I struggle with my native language, I'm going to mangle anything else, for sure!

I wish I had the confidence and ability to try learning Finnish. But it will never happen. :(

Hello!  My native language is English.  I've learned a bit of a few others here and there, but unfortunately I'm not really conversational in anything else.  I find it kindof fun to learn as a hobby when I feel like it, so I might try having some fun with that here with you guys :)  These are the languages I know at least a tiny bit about right now, but I might want to learn others too.

Usually I use a dictionary to help me but.... uh.... let's see what I remember without one :) I probably made a fair number of mistakes, but I wanted to try.

:spain: ¡Hola! No hablo mucho Español.  Quiero estudiar mas.
Hello!  I don't speak much Spanish.  I want to study more.

:china: 你好。學中文一年在大學。我的中文不很好。四個十四。
Hello.  I studied Chinese for one year at university.  My Chinese is not good. Four fourteens (it's part of a tongue twister in Mandarin).
(I had to cheat on this one and look up the characters ;_;.  I wrote out the pinyin first though so I remember just a little bit at least... :) )

:finland: Moi! Hyvää päivä! Minun nimeni on "hln". Kokko, kokoo koko kokko kokoon.
Hello!  Good day! My name is "hln". Kokko (a Finnish surname), go gather all the firewood together.
(I might not have gotten that tongue twister quite right XD.)

:france: Bonjour!  Je ne parle pas Français.
Hello!  I don't speak French.
(I know just a tiny bit.)

:vaticancity: Salvete!
Hello!
(I studied a bit many years ago in school but it's been a long time.)

:japan: ...
...
(I watched a bunch of anime once upon a time and had started making an attempt to learn the writing system.  I recognize some words by sound but I can't write anything other than "の".)

:poland: Cześć!
Hello!
(I learned a bit once but I don't remember much :(  I'm not even sure I got that spelling right...)

:iceland: ... fyrirgefðu.
... forgive me.
(... I don't know much at all XD.  I tried to learn very casually for just a bit.)

Quechua: achachai
cold
(Someone once told me that's how you say "cold" in Quecha... but they might have just been messing with me.  That was on a visit to an area where it's still spoken.  That's the only word I remember if I ever learned more... Just wanted to throw this one in there anyway.)

:portugal: oxala
hoping
(I don't know any Portuguese except this one word but that Madredeus song of the same name made it sound so pretty.  I probably got the translation a bit wrong too... but the song is pretty :) )

... and I'll make an attempt with the remaining SSSS Nordic Council languages:

:norway: ... Fjord!

:denmark: ... Øresund?

:sweden: Hej!
Hey! (as in hello)

Well that was fun :) Sorry for all the mistakes XD.  Looking forward to maybe learning more with you guys!

Hola! Tengo veinte años.

(Hello! I'm 20.)
I can only carry basic conversations in Spanish, so I'll stop there. I'm in my third year as a university student in the USA studying Chemical Engineering. I'm also working on my thesis in a Toxicology lab. Hence, I have a minuscule amount of time to spend on art, but reading SSSS inspires me to try anyway. This comic is utterly stunning!
