Would a Minnion Map be a good idea?I was thinking about this early this morning. A lot of people who made accounts here weren't willing to divulge information on their locations, so they would have to be left out, unfortunately. Aside from them, someone could go through the members list and... tally all of the locations for different members. It would be a pain to start but, once finished, it would be easy to update because the members list can be sorted by sign-up date, so any new arrivals could be added easily as long as update dates are recorded.
There are a lot of SSSS readers from all over the globe, mostly, and I think it would be a cool idea to have a map where those who wants could place themselves.
Exactly how this would be done I don't know but I guess there are people here who knows or have Ideas on how to do this.
/L
Is there no way of doing it via google maps? so that those who know how to can place themselves? That would probably work...
That would probably work...
This thread would definitely get more attention in the SSSS board than here in the GDB. I can move it over to there, if you'd like, once someone sets up a google maps.

Maps are fun.
If it does need an account it would just be a regular old Google account. (Probably)
I was curious if you guys think this should also be re-posted in the Disqus comments, or should we keep it to the forum?
Am I the only one who sees a member living in the sea? Near New Zealand?I....see them too... I'm not sure if there is a tiny island there or not O___O
I think someone may just have selected 'click location on map' from a mobile device. The NZ ocean guy? That's what I thought might have happened too. I could barely use the map on my phone, asides from adding my marker- but I typed in a city name.
Am I the only one who sees a member living in the sea? Near New Zealand? You're referring to "Minitrol"?
In other news, PotatoBunny put her marker down. Haven't seen her on here or in the comments in weeks though.
Inland of Finland is curiously empty. Every reader seems to be on the coast or at least somewhat near it.... are there DSL, UMTS, or LTE coverage maps of Finland to compare that with ... ?

Oh no, my marker is all alone in Africa- it just looks so lonely! :'(By all indications the rash started in Africa. So yeah.... "converting others".
must.... go.... convert... others...
By all indications the rash started in Africa. So yeah.... "converting others".(vaguely menacing troll sounds in distance)
So many people!Meh, 239 by now. Even the guesstimated number of trolls in Kastrup is above that. We'ld be a Björköfjärden or somesuch. :P
Added myself. And this is only the second marker in Russia. It's ... strange. There have been at least a couple of Russians around, so it's probably just that they haven't tagged their location yet.
There have been at least a couple of Russians around, so it's probably just that they haven't tagged their location yet.I was curious to check: Russian translation of SSSS has about a thousand readers. I don't think that none of them knew about this map. Probably they just prefer not to show themselves in any way.
Russian translation of SSSS has about a thousand readersdoes the Russian page even link to the forum?
does the Russian page even link to the forum?I forgot one simple thing: I have a tendency to extreme fanaticism. So, "check the main site a thousand times a day", "register on the forum and add your mark on reader map", "?onvince all your friends to read your favorite web comic.
(also, I don't think the Main comic links to its translation)
Is there a way to edit the map? I want to change how I input myself. If you haven't tagged your location before you need to click additions in the top-left menu, and on the roll-down-menu choose add-marker simple.
If you haven't tagged your location before you need to click additions in the top-left menu, and on the roll-down-menu choose add-marker simple.Drat. I don't even recall such a url. Ah, well, I guess it'll have to stay the way it is, then. Thanks for the help. :)
If you already have tagged your location and want to edit the marker I believe you need the url-address you were provided when you first input your location.
Drat. I don't even recall such a url. Ah, well, I guess it'll have to stay the way it is, then. Thanks for the help. :)I tried signing in on the off-chance that I could find a way to edit mine that way and then tell you about it, but I guess I placed my marker without being registered. Hmmm.
Added myself too! Wasn't sure where to put the marker, so I ended up with my hometown (since I'm moving soon, and don't really know where to yet)
Apparently someone lives just across the border from me.
Should I randomly show up at their door?
Only a disqus account and I don't know how to contact them on disqusAs far as I know (without being registered on Disqus myself), Disqus users get alerted to replies to their posts, so you might try replying to one of theirs no matter how old ...

Only a disqus account and I don't know how to contact them on disqusif the reply thing doesn't work, you should at least be able to mention them and they'd get a ping (I suppose) by typing @theirNick or @theirDisqusURL into one of your messages (you can get their disqus URL by going to their Disqus page / clicking their nick on a message: it will appear right under their nickname)
Ok, I'm a dummy. Where is the map? I remember I found it some time back and it was obvious, but now????It is here:
Hey everyone! We now have a map of the SSSS fanbase!
We were talking about starting this somewhere on the forum, in its earliest days, but I couldn't find a specific thread (probably completely missed it if it's there), so I'm just putting this in here. If this is indeed the thread we talked about that idea in, then hurray, I have done it. This will just be a fun little project to visualize our geography. You don't have to participate if you don't want to.
Here's the map: https://www.zeemaps.com/map?group=1262583
To add a marker for yourself, click on Additions > Add Marker - Simple OR Add marker - Detailed, and then fill out your info. Then, the map will throw a marker down for you, simple as that!
Thanks to Ufo for finding this!
Edit: should this go here, or in the General Discussion Board? I'll let y'all decide.
I know of one reader who works in Antarctica, but he's only there for half the year.
Umm... I lost the link to change my old marker in Oregon, so that needs to be deleted if anyone has the power to do that. I moved.it might still be in your browser history, if you dig deep enough?

Anyway, I added myself! Whee!
Should we pin this to the forum? I know it tends to get lost...I think this is a good idea. *nods*

not super surprised to see that there are a bunch of minnfolk in a 10-mile radius of my location :V (washington dc area)

I set my marker, too! It's so weird, four people in my small city in Germany alone, and someone (I don't know) RIGHT in the village next to me, like... 3 kilometres away... :OSo cool!

Then I realised that this was five years ago and felt old, which is all your fault.

(And felicitations for the nearby non-boom (http://www.swr.de/swraktuell/rp/koblenz/bad-neuenahr-ahrweiler-fliegerbombe-ist-entschaerft/-/id=1642/did=19113654/nid=1642/pnee0f/index.html) today.)

I apologize xP But please, come and visit me, Shine! Let's have a two people minnion meetup in Bonn!I'd love to, but I don't live there and I was spending a few months there for unlikely-to-repeat reasons, so I might not see Bonn again for a while.
heiteru, I can not you to find on the map :Chmmm, it's strange, but you're right O_o
I don't know who put Kim Jong Un in the map, but I snickered at the image XDJust shows how SSSS reaches all kinds of hearts.
I don't know who put Kim Jong Un in the map, but I snickered at the image XDJust a little disappointed it dosen't say "North Korea most best Korea" ::)

That's not a really good joke though. North Koreans do not refer to North Korea as "North Korea", just as "Korea".Well, it wouldn't be an accurate joke.

Just noticed that not only is Kim Jong Il a fan, but we've apparently got a North Sentinelese (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Sentinel_Island) reader! O_o :))Frankly, I still find it more impressive to see Elleth's marker ~15km out in the fairway from Bremerhaven harbor into the North Sea ...
Now, I wonder if the Sentinelese survived the Rash....

I learn something new every day from you folks, if I am fortunate.I do wonder how a lot of the East Indies/Other Asian Islands did. That's mostly all archipelago.
I think North Sentinel might be a good pick, as I can't picture sea beasts getting across those reefs easily. However, I can picture a transmission vector from rats swimming ashore from boats wrecked on the reefs, which Wikipedia tells me is a fairly regular occurrence.
Frankly, I still find it more impressive to see Elleth's marker ~15km out in the fairway from Bremerhaven harbor into the North Sea ...
Can you prove I'm not a sea beast? :PWith an average of 100+ ships entering and leaving the commercial port (https://www.marinetraffic.com/de/ais/details/ports/174/Germany_port:BREMERHAVEN) every day, not to mention all the recreational small boats operated left and right of the fairway, and nobody reporting any incidents? Did a lucky captain accidentally drop an anchor on you and nail you to the seafloor? >:D
Therefore, as of 1st April 2018, ZeeMaps will limit the number of views on free maps to 100. (Free maps means maps that are not owned by an active paid plan). When you reach 100 views, your map will ‘freeze’ and it can only be unfrozen by upgrading to a paid subscription plan.(and that means 100 views ever, not per month/year or anything - making it useless for anything much more than a temporary and not-public use)
Seems like a good idea. Eik must be able to export the map as an admin
Lars made a new map! Here (https://drive.google.com/open?id=11IonJ68Qs8FBBATrUo4AiD_l4SLePdTV&usp=sharing)!
Neat! There should be an option to add a pin up by the search bar. Can you see that?
-- but, while I can see it, I don't think I can add myself? maybe because I haven't got a google account, or does the map administrator need to be the one who does that anyway? or did I just miss something?
Lars made a new map! Here (https://drive.google.com/open?id=11IonJ68Qs8FBBATrUo4AiD_l4SLePdTV&usp=sharing)!Oh, cool! My pin on the old map hadn't been accurate in a couple years anyway. I tagged my city.
There should be an option to add a pin up by the search bar. Can you see that?
Nope. Just a sign-in box.I think you might have to be signed in to add a pin. If you can't/don't want to sign in but want to add a pin, I could do it for you. Approximately where would you like your pin dropped?
Can you see the pin option if you're not signed in? If so, I'll try a different browser.
If you can't/don't want to sign in but want to add a pin, I could do it for you. Approximately where would you like your pin dropped?
Great.Put you right in between the two :)
USA, New York State, Finger Lakes, anywhere between Keuka Lake and Seneca Lake would be plenty close enough.
Thanks!
I also do not have a Google account (paranoid? moi? ;)). If someone would be kind enough to add me I think it would be amusing (and depressingly accurate!) to place me at my local pizza shop (east end of the yellow roofed building (https://www.google.com/maps/@-31.9234989,115.9196078,36m/data=!3m1!1e3))Lars locked the map for the time-being because it was acting buggy (sorry, should have posted that here!), but I will add you once it's unlocked :)

Hi!You're not doing anything wrong! There was a weird technical issue where the map switched everyone's names with their descriptions, and Lars had to lock the map until he had time to figure it out. I'll see where things are with that.
I am new here and in the comic comments they talked me about the MinnionMap (very cool name, by the way!). I tried to put myself in the map, but I don't see the option to put a new pin. Am I doing something wrong?
The map is open again (https://drive.google.com/open?id=11IonJ68Qs8FBBATrUo4AiD_l4SLePdTV&usp=sharing)! I'm not sure how to mention someone in comments, but @Paik you should be able to add yourself now. If you still have trouble, lmk where you want your pin dropped.
Mentioning anyone doesn't notify them, sadly.Ah bummer. I'll message them, then, and hopefully they see that.
Ah bummer. I'll message them, then, and hopefully they see that.
Finally got around to logging in and adding myself, yay! Plenty of markers already :D
also, might I suggest adding a link to the map in the first post, to make it easier for latecomers to add themselves?
Don't seem to be able to add myself, but I'm glad to see there are two Torontonians around! That's odd. Do you have an option to click the "Add marker" button (the one that looks like an upside-down tear drop) and then click where you wanted to add the marker? If not, I can add your marker for you (and then will have to figure out how to make that option accessible to everyone).
Uh oh, the other guys are following suit (https://trollmap.com/#/@55.8148x10.8802z7.32) ...Hey, they are missing the Swedish and Finnish trolls! Someone should warn them!
I added myself onto the map! (a rough marker though)Nice!
Aren't you surprised to be the only one in India?
Nice!
Aren't you surprised to be the only one in India?
In such a populous country, with so many English speakers, and so many people that work, in one way or another, with the Internet?
I remember being mildly surprised to be the only one in Portugal (in the beginning, now we are three).
Some of them are folk I know in real life, including several who recognised me from my avatar picture at folk festivals or Mediæval Fairs (which tells me that Haiz did a good job of catching how I look, though most of the time I don’t wear a flower crown in ordinary life).
And I know Australia has a number of lurkers who aren’t on either the map or the Forum, or only visit the Forum as guests.Do they? Why the shyness? Tell them how well we welcome people! Tell them to see all the cakes on the birthday and promotions threads. ^-^
...though most of the time I don’t wear a flower crown in ordinary life. No? ^-^
