Introduction thread! In foreign languages! Yuppee!
Basically:
- Introduce yourself in your native language (unless the native language is English)
- Repeat the process (it doesn't have to be the same introduction) in all the languages you know, are learning, or have learned at some point in the past.
- Native speakers are welcome to correct mistakes and laugh at the others ;)
- Also provide an English translation for all the introductions!
I'll be slowly writing my introductions over the course of the day :)
Okej, të fillojmë me shqipen, ça thoni? Kam lindur në Shqipëri, dhe kam jetuar në Tiranë pak a shumë për tetë vjet. Mund të më quani Nimphy. Emri im i vërtetë është aq shqiptar sa më s'ka. Translation: Okay, let us begin with Albanian, what do you say? I was born in Albania, and I lived in Tirana more or less for eight years, you can call me Nimphy. My real name is as Albanian as it can be. Now I live in Italy, I'm fourteen, I'm learning several languages (More or less three or four) and... It would be best if I ended the introduction in Albanian and started with Italian. Bye! (Loanword from Italian "Ciao", which Albanians only use to say "goodbye" and not "hello")

Afrikaans first~ I suppose technically both Dutch and Afrikaans are my native languages (I learnt them both simultaneously), but I speak Afrikaans far more. More than English even, actually... haha.

In Italy it depends, althought technically it's 1= worst 10=best. A lot of teachers decide to restrict the field a bit, so while law and the like say that grades go from 1 to 10 some teachers may decide to go from 3 to 8. It's horrible, since you can study hours and hours and hours and never get to the top (thinking of my stupid English test right now), but also good since it's very hard to get 1 and 2 and other extremely horrible and unsalvageable results.
Now I can only think about what a shock would it be to see German students happy for a 1...

Hallo alle zusammen, ich bin FenShen - den Spitznamen habe ich von einer Freundin, die ihn allerdings eher "Fänschn" ausspricht, was ich nicht so schön finde. ;)
Ich komme aus Norddeutschland, schreibe gerade an meiner Masterarbeit und möchte nach dem Studium gern als Journalistin arbeiten. In meiner Freizeit mache ich Karate und lesen viel, vor allem Fantasy und Science Fiction. Für Sprachen habe ich mich schon immer interessiert. In der Schule habe ich Englisch, Französisch, Spanisch und ein bisschen Norwegisch gelernt - Englisch und Französisch kann ich noch, mein Spanisch ist leider völlig verkümmert und um Norwegisch bemühe ich mich gerade wieder. Außerdem versuche ich, Italienisch zu lernen. :)

I'm from northern Germany, currently writing my masters thesis and want to work as a journalist after my studies. ¡Buenas tardes! Me llamo "Sunflower"/Girasol -- "me llamo" literalmente, porque no usamos nuestros nombres verdaderos aqui.
Vivo en California, que era tierra española y entonces mexicano hace muchos años. Por lo tanto, no es de extrañar que muchas personas ya hablan español aqui.
Yo aprendaba español cuando era chica, en la escuela. (Pero he olvidado el mayor parte -- ¡muchos gracias, Google Translate!) Era útil cuando yo trabajaba como periodista en el Valle Central de California, donde hay muchos mexicanos y otros hispanohablantes. Me enteré y escribí historias de muchas costumbres mexicanas, como la quinceañera, el Dia de los Muertos, la Virgen de Guadalupe y su dia festal, y Las Posadas Navidadeñas. (Y también las pandillas latinas; todavia sé los señales de manos y la "heraldia" de las pandillas: 13 = La M o Mafia Mexicana (azul) y 14 = Los Norteños (rojo).)
Ahora no lo uso mucho, excepto de decir "gracias" a la señora que limpia las oficinas.
Me gustan mucho la música y las bailes latinas, de todas clases -- salsa, danzón cubano, chá-chá-chá, merengue (un baile un poco vulgar, pero divertido), tango (¡que encanta los finlandeses también!) y "neo-tango" como el grupo Gotan -- y también la musica bellísima de Brasil: samba, bossa nova, trôpicalismo, y mas. (Perdón, Luci, pero no hablo portugueso, a parte de las palabras de mis canciónes favoritos.)
Y me gusta el arte mexicano, como Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, David Siqueros, y más.
Nunca esperé hablar (o, más bien, escribir) español en una communidad que se interesa de un cuento de las países del Norte. ¡Pero siempre es una sorpresa agradable para encontrar compañerismo en cualquier parte!

Good evening! My name is "Sunflower" -- quite literally, "I call myself Sunflower," since we aren't using our true names on this forum.
I live in California, which used to be Spanish territory and then Mexican many years ago. So it isn't strange that many people here still speak Spanish.
I learned Spanish when I was young, in high school. (But I'm afraid I've forgotten most of it, so thank you, Google Translate!) Speaking Spanish was useful when I was a newspaper reporter in California's Central Valley, where there are a lot of Mexican-Americans and other Spanish speakers.
As a reporter, I learned about and wrote stories on lots of Mexican customs, like the "quinceañera" (a girl's debut when she turns 15, usually with a big, elaborate party), the Day of the Dead (Nov. 1-2), the Virgin of Guadalupe and her festival day on Dec. 8, and the "posada" celebrations at Christmastime. (I also learned about Latino gangs, and still know all the hand signs and "heraldry" of the streets; the two major gangs are "The M" (for Mexican Mafia), or 13s, and "The N" (for Norteños or northerners, a/k/a born in the U.S.).
I'm afraid I don't use my Spanish much these days, other than to thank the lady who cleans the office at night...
I love Latin music and dance of all types, including salsa, Cuban jazz, cha-cha-cha, merengue (a dance that's slightly vulgar, but fun), tango (which the Finns love too!) and the related "neo-tango" as represented by groups like Gotan. And also beautiful Brazilian music: samba, bossa nova, tropicalismo, and more! (Sorry, Luci -- I think you're our only Brazilian so far -- but I don't know any Portuguese other than a few words of my favorite songs, like Tom Jobim's "Águas de março.")
I also like Mexican art.
I never thought I'd have a chance to speak (or rather, write) Spanish in a forum about a story set in the Nordic countries. But it's always a pleasant surprise to find fellowship anywhere!

Je viens de commencer mes études en Art au Cegep –une forme d’école préuniversitaire que nous avons seulement au Québec- Et j’adore ARTD et SSSS! Minna est donc une artiste qui m’inspire beaucoup et j’aimerais dessiner aussi bien qu’elle un jour! C’est pourquoi je travaille très fort à m’améliorer.
J’ai quelques base d’Espagnol et de Mandarin, mais je ne vais pas tenter d’écrire dans ces deux langues, j’ai beaucoup trop perdue pour tenter cela!

If it's of any interest, Norwegian categorically uses masculine gender in titles even when there exists a female version (I can only think of one example, lærerinne=Lehrerin). And whenever there's been a crime the police is looking for the "gjerningsmann" ("man who did the deed").

If it's of any interest, Norwegian categorically uses masculine gender in titles even when there exists a female version (I can only think of one example, lærerinne=Lehrerin). And whenever there's been a crime the police is looking for the "gjerningsmann" ("man who did the deed").

Technically I am a Lehrerin, but I dislike putting two Letters on everything I try to be just to let everybode know that I'm a woman. I'm fine with the male form and always used it on scientific tasks at university. You had to mention in a sentence that you are aiming at both, male and female (or now at any of the 58 known genders) and then using the male form only would be fine. It saves you many letters ;). The British do without a female form as well as the Turkish, so I'm not sure why we Germans really need it.

Then one female student felt slighted by the title of her being a man and started to clamor for being granted the title of Diplom-Kauffrau; Since the regulations have the rank of legal acts, this required an actual lawsuit at the Verwaltungsgerichtshof, yadda yadda. In the end, the regulations were changed so that male students became a Kaufmann and female ones a Kauffrau.
A while later, a female student felt that her title-to-be singling her out for her gender was debasing ...

This debate was a large issue while we occupied university in 2009. I just hated how much time was put on correcting protocols. But I think we should cultural gender issues in a seperate topic ;) It would be interesting to know if similar problems occur during this Lesbian-Trans-Gender-Queer-Bla-debate anywhere else.

I've been studying Italian for about half a year now and the French words are helping a lot. Because the language is spoken almost like Finnish I don't have problems with the pronunciation. Even though I've studied French more than Italian I think I know it better already.

I learned it mostly by watching TV which caused me to take below average naps during the actual lessons that I still had to sit through in school. Because of this my accent and word choices are mostly American. Apart from these languages I've scratched the surface of Old West Norse (heil, ek heitir Óláfr), Icelandic (sæl, ég heiti Ólafur), and Danish (hej, jeg hedder Ole), but I can't really say I speak any of them at all. I have a linguistics oriented attitude to studying even though I acknowledge that there's nothing that can beat actual speaking if one wants to learn a language. However, because I've spent quite a while studying the differences between related languages and how both Germanic and Romance languages have formed, I also have a quite good grasp how the languages I haven't studied yet work. For example I can read very simple texts in Spanish and Norwegian with relatively few glances at the dictionary. With this background I'm now trying to expand my vocabulary and use the languages as much as possible to get a natural flow. I hope that eventually I can have atleast conversational proficiency in most of modern Germanic and Romance languages. Ambitious, I know, and I might have the good old case of hubris, but as the saying goes: "Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars". ;)
I'm sure I made tons of mistakes in these short introductions. Feel free to point them out if you have time, but if I'm right those should iron themselves out eventually anyways as I push myself to use the languages more and more. On more general note, I found the wonderful stories (I don't really like the word comics) through imgur, where SSSS popped up few times to the front page displaying trending posts (here they are: 1 (http://imgur.com/gallery/pfpe7ST), 2 (http://imgur.com/gallery/XZsDJ), 3 (http://imgur.com/gallery/dfr6Zt6) in case you want to read random people's thoughts on SSSS). Loved the art style and obviously the nordic theme appealed to me. Long story short I read both ARTD and so far released pages of SSSS in a few days. And here I am now writing to you.
I'll propably stick my head in the nordic and romance language threads whenever I have time, which might be depressingly rare. :/ See you around.

Afrikaans kan ik wel volgen, maar niet zelf spreken; ik heb er familie wonen (een oudoom met een stoet aan nakomelingen) dus af en toe krijgen we brieven in het Afrikaans.
Uh, wat nog meer dat niet al in mijn algemene introductie staat? Ik ben dol op alles met taal, ik heb SSSS dan ook gevonden via de talen-stamboom die het Internet rond ging. Ik ben 30 en heb heel veel creatieve hobby's.
Ik spreek dus Engels en Nederlands, en had Duits, Frans en Latijn op school maar dat heb ik echt veel te weinig gebruikt om er veel mee te kunnen. Ik kan ze nog wel aardig lezen, maar dat is het. Ik heb ook een paar semesters oud-Iers gehad op de universiteit.
Oh, en ik was een paar jaar geleden begonnen mijn eigen taal te ontwerpen, maar ben gestopt voor ik meer dan een paar woorden had. De grammatica zat aardig in elkaar, dat wel.

Hi Deirdre! The problem with the diacritics is a forum-based one, Russian and Japanese characters don't work either.
The flags work like smilies, just type :country: - like : poland : without the empty spaces. :poland:

Thank you for the answers about flags and diacritics. And also thank you for complimenting my German! If I could switch to English to try to explain the problem of my German-language timidness, I bet it's becouse I have never really learned the basics properly, just skipped a level or two ;) And now I try to gather all the bits and pieces of info I get (grammar, mosty) and use it simultanously with totally new vocab and grammar constructions I learn. I only feel sure in the basics shown in my previous post, than it's more of a luck and feeling. Also, with French it went softly, as I used to attend a very intense course and visited France multiple times; and I was only exposed to German at school for two hours per week or so. Also, the spirit of my class wasn't the best, as most of Polish society considers German ugly and hard to learn, for reasons I can't understand.

I think I can understand why they consider it ugly (e.g. lots of harsh sounds and stops) and hard to learn (I won't start on that), but of course I don't share their attitude ;)

German has never sounded harsh to me; in fact germanic languages in general sound really soft to my ear, though in a raspier kind of way than say, romance languages.
I think "German as a harsh language" is more a leftover anti-german stereotype from a time where Germany wasn't a country a lot of people liked.

As a native German speaker, I can't really judge how it sounds to someone who doesn't understand every word. I just think there are lots of "sh" and especially the "ch" [ç/x] sounds some people don't like, and the glottal stop makes it sound less flowing.

And that of course affects the level of German common among people continuing their education on upper-high-school/university level. As I like all languages just becouse I'm hounted by the fact that people decided to communicate in so different manners, I've had no prejudices. And objectively looking (as objectively as I can being a Polish native-speaker) German sounds are no more harsh than Polish, there are less stops and the stresses are more natural. German grammar is quite different, but generally easier (though it depends what you concentrate on). The next thing is "Germans have long words", but it's an argument only to those who have never seen Icelandic or Finnish wordbuilding.
Yet I find French doesn't have many sh/ch/sz sounds compared to Polish or German. However, I'm not a French native, so I won't argue.

Two years ago or so I met a woman on a train. It was a night journey, lasting about 9/10 hours, and we were alone in the compartment, so we started talking about everything, as it happens. I don't exacly remember how, but she started to tell about her deaf-mute niece, and how she started signing to contact with her. Seeing my interest in the story and the sign language, she taught me the alphabet and various words and expressions useful in everyday life. I did my best to expand the knowadge, yet I've had since very little possibility of actually practising it, and a proper course I used to attend for a few weeks was ceased about six months ago. However I still manage to greet a deaf person if I spot one (and have a short, easy conversation if possible) hopefully making their day a bit happier :)

Je suis en train d'apprendre le Danois. J'ai eu quelques cours en espagnol, mais ça fait assez longtemps que je m'en souviens plus vraiment.... Je connais quelques kana japonais et plusieurs mots qui peuvent (ou non) se transformer en phrase qui ont du sens. C'est a peu près l'étendu de mes talents.

Summary of what I said in french : I'm a Canadian French from Quebec and I like to read so learning new languages is a very awesome way to read in the original version it was made; they are much more better! Currently learning Danish. Some classes in Spanish some years ago that I cannot remember. Also know some kana and some words in Japanese that can sometimes be made in somewhat understandable sentences...

The common Swedish /r/ sound is a trill (or rolling sound as you put it). Scanian and other dialects may differ though.

Well, another of my interests is retro-computing, specifically Atari 8-bit computers (the main competitor to Commodore in the 80's) ... in the late 80's, Atari computers caught on big in Poland, and to this day there is still an active Atari computer scene there. So as it turns out, I have a lot of contacts who are Polish, and it'd be neat to be able to play Atari games, go to the websites, and be able to understand some of the language without having to rely on Google Translate. I also have written utilities, and would like to one day be able to translate the doc files into Polish.

jp otter just so you know, there are some mistakes but not at 'j'ai quatre ans'. for example it would be better to say 'dans beaucoup de villes américaines', otherwise there is 'ma retraite en Italie' and you did travel 'en Angleterre'...
so you see, really good french, very understable!!!! Oh and you could use 'peu importe' for Whatever if it's an exclamation like 'oh whatever'

I have no idea how to do the flags, so here goes: ENGLISH - Hi, my name is Erika, I'm 32 (almost 33) and live in the south of Sweden, though I'm originally from fairly far north. I devour literature, mainly fantasy and sci fi, and work as a teacher teaching 13 - 16 year old children. My subjects are Swedish and English (although my English is far from perfect). I didn't discover SSSS until quite recently, but I'm now most definitely hooked. :-)

Först ordföljd - jag har också Bujinkan Budo taijutsu som hobby. Kör är ett jobbigt ord som kan ha olika betydelser, "i ett kör" uttalas "chör" och betyder att man har det stressigt, körigt, medan den kör med hårt k som man sjunger i är "en kör". Sista, flöjt blir flöjter i plural.

ooo i just remembered i was going to have a go at helping with this too. just a few little things:
Ich mage viel -> Ich mag viele (the verb mögen is one of them funny ol' modals, viel/viele = much/many)
einem Chor mit dem name Another Castle -> einem Chor, der Another Castle heisst (i'm not 100% sure if this is grammatically necessary but to my ears it sounds like the right way to go)
wandere im Walde -> wandere in den Wald (the accusative strikes again! it's a case (*ba-dum-tsshh*) of accusative vs. dative here. if you're walking in the woods you use the accusative 'in den'. stationary activities however do use im)
aside from that your german seems pretty great to me. though i'm unsure of the german equivalent of 'sopii minulle kuin nenä päähän', in english it's 'fits me like a glove'.

Correct, though a tad formal. If you'ld want to change that:
In writing, quote marks or italics would do: Ich singe im Chor "Another Castle".
In speech, it'ld likely end up as "einem Chor namens 'Another Castle'".
i'm unsure of the german equivalent of 'sopii minulle kuin nenä päähän', in english it's 'fits me like a glove'.
For the fit of actual clothing, there is "sitzt wie angegossen" (fits like cast on).
For the figurative meaning, there's an entire range of idioms ... "paßt genau zu mir", "ist genau mein Ding", "trifft meinen Geschmack", "ist wie für mich gemacht", etc. etc. ... not sure whether I would want to recommend a specific one ...

For "normal" speech you are almost right, Lalligaattori. You can say "Ich wandere in den Wald" if you want to say "I walk/hike into the wood" or "Ich wandere im Wald" for "I walk/hike in the wood".
However, "Ich wandere im Walde" isn't wrong, just old-fashioned and sounds very poetic. Like Goethe would have written it. ;) "Die Vögelein schweigen im Walde." (The birds keep silent in the forest.)

(French is the foreign language that I'm most comfortable with even though I still make a lot of mistakes. I studied it for four years in college, but never had the opportunity to study abroad (well, I almost did, but that's a different story). I was born 22 years ago in Oregon, USA, in a reeeaaaallllyyy small town and lived in the country for the first twenty years of my life. My heritage is Mexican, but I learned Spanish in school.)

(My relationship with Spanish started many years ago, in childhood. Two of my older sisters (I have three) spoke Spanish as their native language, but when they started to go to school my family decided that we didn't need to know Spanish. -_- Thus I feel like I should know more Spanish and that it should be easier, but of course it isn't. I studied it in high school and in college, and I love it as much as I hate it. Hahaha!)

English: Finally! Basically, to sum the aforementioned sections up, my name's Lena and I can speak a small handful of languages with varying degrees of proficiency! I'm extra interested in Scandinavian languages, and am learning Icelandic and Norwegian simultaneously! My Norwegian is decent enough for me to be able to write stuff in it (I'm guesstimating I'm about A2), while my Icelandic is truly horrifying for now!
Macedonian and Serbian are my two "mother-tongues", and I've a C1 in English. I'm actually planning to go study Icelandic at Háskóli Íslands in a couple of years!

It's when you're really lazy and not doing anything and sort of just become a puddle of human in the couch, watching TV and being Unproductive for longer periods of time. I don't know how else to describe it. : P Also, it's been 4 years since I finished learning German, and I haven't used it since, so I'm happy if I can make myself understood. : P

I'ld go for "abhängen" or "chillen" in youth-speak, or "faulenzen" or "herumhängen" in regular German. Or "entspannen", to put a positive spin on it.

another one for the collection would be (he)rumgammeln. That one sort of implies being useless and lazy.
fun fact for Scandinavian speakers and learners: vergammelt / gammelig = rotten, putrid; gammeln = to rot, the compound form is Gammel- (now imagine the giggles going through the historic town/city centre somewhere in Norway with 2 primary school aged children...)

Hi everyone! This is my first post on the forums, but I know quite a few people here from the chat. :)
I love languages so much! I've been learning Swedish for some three and a half months now and in the meanwhile have been trying a lot of other ones (Spanish, Arabic, Dutch, French,...), but I haven't yet found one that I can devote myself to as much as I do to Swedish. I'm looking forward to talking with other SSSS and language enthusiasts here! :D
Mnogo obožavam jezike! Počeo sam da učim švedski pre oko tri i po meseca, a u međuvremenu sam se isprobavao u učenju mnogo drugih (španski, arapski, holandski, francuski,...), ali još uvek nisam našao nijedan kojem bih se posvetio koliko i švedskom. Jedva čekam da ovde upoznam i razgovaram sa ostalim SSSS i jezičkim zaluđenicima! :D
Jag alskär mycket språk! I've been learning French for about four years, but because I can't find any French people in Auckland (I live there now), I cant speak French well (if you hear me, you might die due to my French, or maybe due to your impatience because I falter too much hahaha.). I like French and every other language as well.

The declination isn't right. In this case, only the position of the words defines the meaning (and I guess that's what makes it a bit funny?)
"Das Mädchen isst das Brot. Das Brot isst das Mädchen."

I'm a Chinese American born in the States, currently a college student. Both of my parents came from China. I speak English, Mandarin, and French; Mandarin is my first language, but I only have native fluency in English (it's really hard to maintain heritage languages in the Chinese American community, since we're so freaking small (in the northern Bay Area) and all the kids culturally identify somewhere between Chinese and American). My French is better than my Mandarin, hahaha. I can speak Mandarin fine, except when conversations get technical or idioms get thrown in without much context, and I can read and type a little. Writing is pretty much out of the questions--I can write maybe ten to fifteen characters off of the top of my head, and not very well. Uhhh I'm learning Spanish, Italian, Swedish, and Norwegian on Duolingo and reviewing my French on there as well, but I can really only say anything with conversational meaning in French whoops. And I'm totally mixing up Norwegian and Swedish. That's what I get for taking on too many languages at once on top of art and things that I actually need to do, like prepping for next semester's classes ("7_7)

My first language is English, so hi! I guess I don't really need to introduce myself in this one.
Et... je sais la langue de francais aussi, mais moin de l'anglais. Je suis canadienne, alors bien sur, je sais un peu de la francais! Mais je suis debutante encore, alors je sais que je vais faire les erruers ici xD
Donc... je vais dit quelque-choses au sujet de moi. Je n'ai pas fait les cours de francais d'immersion en l'ecole secondaire, mais juste les cours bas. En meme, j'ai recu le diplome DELF en le niveau B1 avec les etudiants de les cours d'immersion. Je suis acadienne, et mes grandparents et mon pere sont acadiens, mais seulement mes grandparents parlent la langue francais tout leurs vies... mon pere et moi ont appris ca plus tard. J'ai fait un cours d'immersion de l'ete pour cinq semaines avec pas des autres langues, et j'ai appris beaucoup! J'aime lire et ecrire, regarder 'Daredevil' et autres choses de Marvel, et aussi je fais les sports de curling et aikido.

I experience the different voice with english, too. Especially since (mainly caused by lack of detailed vocab) I often cannot express dark humor in that language. Expressing anything in french and turkish is nothing where I could display any sort of character ;).

Why yes, that is the full extent of my Spanish! How could you tell? (Full disclosure: I can also count to six, and am of course familiar with the names of various Spanish foods, since there's a restaurant serving same on every corner where I live.)
French:
Uh, I've forgotten it all. Comment ça va?
I had a friend who was trying to teach me French. He gave me a handful of words, out of context, to practice each time we met. But then we lost touch. And with no context, no grammar, and no phrases, not to mention nobody to practice on... yeah, it's all gone.
(And I spelled it wrong; didn't put the mark under the c in ça va. Barely managed to remember that it was a c and not an s. *am hopeless*)
Irish:
Tá mé bean. Arán agus uisce. ólaim uisce.
Translation: I am an idiot.
Actual Translation: I am a woman. Bread and water. I drink water.
What is wrong with you, Duolingo?! I can't even say hello! (Duolingo is the language learning app I've been using.)
I've actually stopped studying this one, because I realized that although it is available through Duolingo, it doesn't have full features like the other languages have; tap-to-hear, say it back, and the explain function all seem to be missing. Maybe they'll update it later, or maybe I'll go looking for a better lessons source, but for now... meh.
German:
Hallo. Mein Name ist WrittenEmber.

I just started. I lack the ability to say anything else, unless I lapse into the kind of weird throwing-words-at-the-wall stuff that I exhibited in Spanish and Irish.
I chose German because I always surprise myself when I'm able to pick up a glimmer of meaning when I attempt to read written passages in German. It makes me feel like I might have some hope of making actual progress, unlike with any other language I've attempted.
Honestly, lack of confidence is my biggest stumbling block. I'm afraid that I'll say something mean or rude or wildly inappropriate -- or, most likely, flat-out stupid -- by accident. And I'm afraid that, when the chips are down and someone actually tries to speak to me oh dear god, are they talking to me? then I won't be able to remember anything and I'll just stare at them like a deer in headlights.
It doesn't help that I'm not that great at conversing with strangers in my native English. *shy*
Nor that it took me ages to become a decent speller in English. It still amazes me when I manage to write something up that doesn't come out sprinkled with red when I run it through spell-check. If I struggle with my native language, I'm going to mangle anything else, for sure!
I wish I had the confidence and ability to try learning Finnish. But it will never happen. :(

Hello! My native language is English. I've learned a bit of a few others here and there, but unfortunately I'm not really conversational in anything else. I find it kindof fun to learn as a hobby when I feel like it, so I might try having some fun with that here with you guys :) These are the languages I know at least a tiny bit about right now, but I might want to learn others too.
Usually I use a dictionary to help me but.... uh.... let's see what I remember without one :) I probably made a fair number of mistakes, but I wanted to try.

Ah, welcome welcome, Liquinox! That's lovely that you're studying chemical engineering. STEM fields are super cool, and though I don't plan to go into one myself, mad props to you for being in such a cool field! ^^
I agree--the comic is very beautiful! And fortunately, this forum is full of loads of people who also agree. Please feel free to make yourself at home here. There are some other language threads here (I'm sure there must be one for Spanish, though I must admit that I haven't looked for that one in particular).

My name is Jerzy (George in English; I wonder if you can pronounce it) and I'm 17 years old guy. I live in Cracow, Poland and I'm starting second year of liceum (more less something like High School) in few weeks. Later, if everything goes according to my plan, I will start studying veterinary medicine. I haven't got many hobbies, but I am very passionate about them. They are: reading, linguistics, biology, animals and tea (This might be addiction, not hobby, but who cares?)
It may also seem odd, but I really enjoy some simple gardening, like weeding and so on. It's really relaxing, at least for me. I also tend to have problems with making new friends or just joining new communities. That's all I've got to say in English.
Now I will disgrace myself with this miserable attempt of using German.

Cześć wszystkim! Mam na imię Jerzy, mam siedemnaście lat. Mieszkam w Krakowie, w Polsce, i chodzę do liceum. Za kilka tygodni zaczynam drugą klasę, profil biologiczno-chemiczny (mam nadzieję, że jakoś to przetrwam, obliczenia mnie dobijają). Później zamierzam pójść na weterynarię i skończyć specjalizację - zwierzęta egzotyczne. Zastanawiam się też czy nie pójść potem na polonistykę, tak dla przyjemności, ale raczej zrezygnuję z tego pomysłu.
Teraz parę słów bardziej o mnie. Zacznę od tego, że nie mam wielu zainteresowań, za to są one dla mnie bardzo ważne. Przede wszystkim jest to literatura, zwłaszcza fantastyka (tu ukłon w stronę Jacka Dukaja). Uwielbiam też poezję, w szczególności wiersze, które napisała Wisława Szymborska; mój ulubiony to ,,Nazajutrz, bez nas". Oprócz tego są to zwierzęta, biologia, językoznawstwo i herbata. Lubię też proste prace ogrodowe, są naprawdę odprężające, przynajmniej moim zdaniem.
Przyznam się też, że mam pewne kłopoty z zaprzyjaźnianiem się z nowymi ludźmi i wstępowaniem do różnych społeczności. Są to dla mnie naprawdę niezręczne chwilę. To by było na tyle.
It's pretty much the same what in English. I only added my favourite literature authors and mentioned that I consider studying Polish philology after Veterinary
That'd be all about me. I'd also like to mention that I really like SSSS, but it's rather obvious. I am here, after all, am I not? :)

I second kjeks' verdict of your German, and I wonder if you have read the books by Andrzej Sapkowski? He is one of my favourite authors and I'd loooove to read his books in the original, but I'm afraid I'll never learn Polish (aside from some words since one of my sister-in-laws is Polish and so my niece grows up bilingual).

...Darn it, now I have remembered that I wanted to learn Polish. Adding that to the list of definitely-over-twenty-at-this-point languages I particularly want to learn. I should prolly try to actually narrow that down, but narrowing it down got it to the twenty-something languages it's at now. XD

For those wondering, in Chinese you can freely drop pronouns and conjunctions whenever you think the context allows-- note that there is no conjugation of verbs whatsoever in Chinese, so there isn't even a grammatically implied subject or object, just a contextually implied one.
Wow, I apparently use a lot more smilies when I write in informal Chinese, I never realized that until just now. And I'm a lot more modest, in a way my American English speaking brain would never do. Strange, that.

I have also learned English and Danish (like all Icelanders have to do) but I have only managed to maintain my English knowledge (for obvious reasons) while my Danish has unfortunately deteriorated with time. I am learning Spanish at the moment, and am planning to learn many other languages in the future. Truth be told, the list of languages I am planning to learn is so long that it is more of a list of which languages in the world I would like more to learn than others XD.
I am with the same introduction in all the other languages, so you know what it should say in them all.

Hallo, jeg hedder Þórir Pétur, og jeg er fra Island. Jeg er født og vosket op på Island, så islandsk er mit første sprog (som er årsagen til at jeg begyndte på det). Jeg har også lært engelsk og dansk (ligesom alle islændinge må gøre) men jeg har kun formået at bevare min engelsk kundskaber (af indlysende årsager) mens min danske har desværre forværret med tiden. Jeg lærer spansk i øjeblikket, og jeg planlægger at lære mange andre sprog i fremtiden. También he aprendido inglés y danés (como todos los islandeses tienen que hacer), pero sólo he logrado mantener mi conocimiento de Inglés (por razones obvias), mientras que mi danés se ha deteriorado con el tiempo. Estoy estudiando español en este momento, y estoy planeando aprender muchos otros idiomas en el futuro. A decir verdad, la lista de idiomas que estoy planeando aprender es tan larga que es más una lista de los idiomas en el mundo que me gustaría aprender más que otros XD.
Estoy con la misma introducción en todos los otros idiomas, así que sabes lo que debería decir en todos ellos.
(P.S. All the introductions were translated from the Icelandic one, and the española one is probably the worst translated of them all, even though I spent the most time in that one XP)

Letzten Oktober bin ich dem Stand Still Stay Silent fandom beigetreten und habe seitdem großen Spaß hier! Ich hatte seit der 3. Klasse Englisch in der Schule, außerdem hatte ich Franzözisch und Spanisch, letzteres aber nur für zwei Jahre. Französisch kann ich ganz gut lesen, aber nicht wirklich sprechen oder schreiben. Seit Oktober lerne ich auch Schwedisch, aber ich bin noch nicht so gut.

Oh, but I had been in school together with people who had English as long as I did and weren't any good at all! I think part of why I'm so good is because I hang around the internet a lot, and I have heard similar things of other people who are fluent in English. Then again, I have often heard people say that the language courses in American schools are crappy...
And don't worry too much about not understanding German! I think German is hard for non-native speakers, especially when they are not used to learning other languages. Understanding German might take you a while, but I think you can always ask for help around here :)

With the directions - yes! :D But we use these words to indicate midnight and midday as well!

Well, yes, we use лапка or лапа to refer to the hand, but usually this is done for puns or jokes (for example "Я не могу, у меня лапки / I can't do this, I have paws"). For me it's funny because I don't know the language (yet!) and I can't figure out if you're joking or that's what you mean. And it turns out even more fun!

FWIW, in French, "midi" (noon) *is* in general use as an alternative to "sud" (South). Goes to show which side of the equator those languages developed on, I guess. ;)

Oh, yeah! Italian also uses "mezzogiorno" (midday) to mean south!
There's also the rather archaic usage of "levante" and "ponente" (rising and setting, respectively) to mean east and west. Not when giving directions, though, just when talking about geography.

Huh, in Polish it's not archaic, it's just literally how you do it. East (wschód) is where the Sun rises (wschodzi), and West (zachód) where it sets (zachodzi). Wschód and zachód (słońca) also mean just sunrise and sunset, respectively.

Asun Tampereella nyt (ei peikot täällä vielä...), tulin tänne pari kuukautta sitten mut oon asunnut Suomessa jo yhdeks kuukautta (olin töissä Lapissa viime talvena, huskyfarmilla, ja siellä aloitin oppia suomea). Kirjoitan suomea vähän "puhekielella" - yleensä suomalaiset voi ymmärttää mua hyvin, kuitenkin, älä yritä imitoida mun kielioppia jos opit itsesi :P Löysin SSSS vaan pari viikoa sitten ja nyt mää tykkään sitä vähän liian paljon, toivottavasti täällä mä voisin löytää ennemän kavareita jutelemaan SSSS:sta! I came here a couple of months ago but I've been living in Finland nine months already (I was working on a husky farm in Lapland last winter and that's where I started learning to speak Finnish). I write like I speak Finnish so it's not particularly grammatically beautiful nor does it sound like the "book language" you're meant to use when writing, Finns do usually understand me well enough but don't imitate me too much if you're learning! I found SSSS just a few weeks ago and now I think I like it a little too much, hopefully here I'll find more friends to talk about it with! If anyone wants, I can help them with the Finnish language, as I said my Finnish isn't beautiful but I think I'm usually pretty good at explaining the "difficult" bits.

Yep! I noticed that the phrase "tuli kokko" came up in one of Lalli's runos (can't remember which, but it was early on) and immediately had the Korpi song in my head for the rest of the day, so when I was trying to think of a nice bird-relevant name to fit the Onni avatar it seemed to fit... I was told once that Finns viewed Estonians and their language as country bumpkins using simple words to suit their simple minds, and the Estonians thought the Finns were full of themselves and made their language overly flowery and high-falutin', to use the American idiom. *shrug*
I really can't follow much of the Finnish, to be honest, although I do better since finding ARtD and SSSS - I know to substitute the Finnish "y" with the Estonian "ü" when sounding out the syllables, for instance.
I have often said I speak "nagu tobe laps", an idiot child, because I am all but illiterate, and only ever learned vocabulary to the extent a child would. The difference is that I know how to tell someone that I vomited, but I can't tell them how I'm inspired.

I really can't follow much of the Finnish, to be honest, although I do better since finding ARtD and SSSS - I know to substitute the Finnish "y" with the Estonian "ü" when sounding out the syllables, for instance.
I have often said I speak "nagu tobe laps", an idiot child, because I am all but illiterate, and only ever learned vocabulary to the extent a child would. The difference is that I know how to tell someone that I vomited, but I can't tell them how I'm inspired.
I bet your grammar is really natural though, so the hardest part of learning a Uralic language is already out of the way. If you wanted to brush up your vocabulary with daily Memrise sessions or something (you can get it on your phone and it reminds you every day) I bet you'd pick it up super fast! "Only" fluent in English and Polish - fluency in a second language is always a treasure. I always thought of Polish as your bog-standard Slavic, but looking at the character set in your snippet is a bit of an eye-opener for me (please excuse my ignorance). I have no idea how my one and only phrase of Polish - djen dobri - would actually be written. Maybe I'll use the 'hej hej' instead! ^-^

They way I see it, all Slavic languages are strange in their own ways (especially when it comes to grammar - no standards whatsoever). Your mysterious phrase is written: "dzień dobry", the standard "good morning"; I literally said hey hey ;)

Native English: Hi, I'm Lueley! I live in the UK but I was born elsewhere to British parents.
I speak Spanish conversationally (if you ignore my grammar) but it's getting rusty since I stopped classes- need to work on keeping it up! I used to read Latin very well but also haven't exercised that muscle in a few years. As of a few weeks ago, I'm currently teaching myself Swedish which is really fun (Hej!).
Also, in England, it's basically mandatory to have French lessons between the ages of 6-11 but I can only really say 'bonjour'. I was sent to Mandarin classes as a kid but I only remember how to count and say some basic greetings (Mum's part Chinese and Manx, but there's nowhere outside of the island you can really learn Manx so I don't speak a word of the latter!). My older brother speaks better Mandarin then me, it would be nice to learn it one day but it's not top of the list.
I'm going to uni in the autumn where I'll be starting lessons in Anglo Saxon and Russian, which will be awesome! Russian has been my dream language since age 12, so I'm hyped.

Hi, I'm Lueley. I took Spanish classes in secondary school, but I still worry when it comes to grammar. To be honest, I think experience is more important than the classroom. When I was 17, I went to Costa Rica (alone- my Mum was terrified!) to work with a turtle protection charity. Many of the volunteers and researchers didn't speak English, and though I didn't see a turtle (how unlucky 😢), I learnt a lot. For example, in Costa Rica, they usually say 'with pleasure' instead of 'you're welcome' as a response to 'thank you'!

It's fun to see that some expressions are the same in different langages, because in south France we tend to say "Avec plaisir" (with pleasure) as well when someone thanks us. Another example is the expression "Tomber amoureux" or "Fall in love" which is exactly the same in both langages :D

I learned Russian at school, but never did very well with it.

I like your reason. :haw: With some effort, you should be able to have a mixed-language conversation, but it'll probably be easier to have a written conversation than a spoken one, due to weird way Danish is pronounced.

They, and in particular the (BB)code to summon them with, changed at some point - and we never had flags for all the countries/languages in the first place. IIRC (can't find the pertinent admin post right away) we switched from plaintext country names (i.e., ":germany:") to two-letter ISO codes (":de:" -> :de:).

I'm known here as Maglor (and am terribly glad there are still Tolkienists like Annuil in a younger generation))). I've been studying English since my childhood, couple o'years I've been studying French (and can't remember a damn thing too). My hobby is poetical translations to Russian from English and sometimes other languages should I find a good non-rhymed translation.

Если на родной язык, то не сложно. А по поводу имён: он вроде и в Сильме Мэглор (не в том переводе, который у меня... в моём Лютиэнь перевели как Лучиэнь. Фу!). Кроме того в квенья и синдарине дофига дифтонгов, так что мб и Э.
If translate in native language it's easy. As for names: I believe in Silmarillion it sounds like AE (not in translation I have, where they translated TH in Luthien as CH. Ew). Besides, both Quenja and Sindarin have tonns of diphthongs, so it might actually be AE.

С квэнья имя Маглора тоже переводится с "а", Макалаурэ (Makalaurё), что ещё страннее, потому что там есть эта подозрительная "ё", произносимая как "э".

At the beginning there there are notes from the translator, but they are mostly about "c", "th", "dh", "l", etc. nothing about "a"... Maglor is translated like Маглор, as well as Магор (Magor), and Ангрод (Angrod), as an example. There really is a ton of diphthongs, but I don't know if they have any relation to "a". Maglor's name translates from Quenja with "a" as well, Macalaurё, which is even more strange, because of that suspicious "ё", that sounds like "e". Huh... J'ai habité en Norvège et là j'ai appris un peu de norvégien. Je ne comprends pas toujours parfaitement le norvégien parlé, mais je m'en sors plutôt bien. Je peux lire le bokmål et un peu le danois. La famille de mon mari est néerlandaise, alors j'ai commencé à m'intéresser au néerlandais aussi (je suis à un niveau très basique). Je n'ai pas encore commencé à étudier l'allemand.
Mon personnage préféré dans SSSS, c'est Reynir.

Je laatste zin is prima, maar je kunt ook zeggen 'Reynir is mijn favoriete personage in SSSS' net zoals in het Engels. Merk wel op dat we het Franse leenwoord 'personage' gebruiken voor een fictief personage, waar we het woord 'karakter' gebruiken in verwijzing naar iemands persoonlijkheid. Dat gezegd hebbende is het niet verkeerd om 'karakter' te gebruiken voor een fictief karakter, het klinkt alleen een beetje als een anglicisme. Persoonlijk gebruik ik ze allebei, maar soms gebruik ik bewust 'personage' om commentaar op mijn woordgebruik te vermijden.
Your last sentence is fine, but you can also say 'Reynir is mijn favoriete personage in SSSS' very much like you would in English. Note that we do use the French loan word 'personage' to refer to a fictional character, whereas we use the word 'karakter' to refer to someone's personality. That being said, it's not really wrong either to use 'karakter' for a fictional character, it just sounds like a bit of an anglicism. Personally I use both, but sometimes I consciously use 'personage' to avoid any commentary on my word usage.
EDIT: I had to think a bit about the way you used 'Ik vind Reynir de leukste', as 'Ik vind Reynir het leukst' sounds more natural to my ears. I think the grammatical difference is that if you say the former it means 'I think Reynir is the nicest/sweetest/most appealing person', whereas the latter just sounds like 'I like Reynir the most'. 'Ik vind Reynir de leukste' sounds as if a longer sentence is implied - for example, 'Ik vind Reynir de leukste jongen van de groep.'

Sooo, I was just surfing the internet, then remembered SSSS, checked the fan forum, read some stuff here and got in the mood of writing something in Georgian. I wonder if any of you know Georgian... It's a beautiful language!!! (and very very old btw) Look:

Translation: Did you know that "igi" stands for he/she/it in Georgian? "Igi" is also the title of my favourite allegorical story. So my nickname isn't just a random word! Suliko is a pretty nice name too; The song "Suliko" has been my favourite since childhood. But its root word is "soul" and considering that unlike other Georgians I am not a Religious person, it would be a bit unfair to use something connected to faith.
This comic really inspired me to also write/draw a little fairy tale someday; A tale that will make readers fall in love with the culture of my homeland ^-^

What gorgeous scripts! I pored over those because my first impression was that the Telugu font looked a lot like the Georgian font, but naahh, too far apart (although with ancient trade routes being what they are, not as far apart as they seem?). (I am sooooo ignorant.)
