I'm on Memrise for Finnish as 'starfallz' if anyone wants to follow me. I am pretty terrible at keeping up with it though.

Livemocha is nice if you want to have native speakers actively checking the exercises you're working on. I've used it for Korean, Japanese, and Finnish. The Finnish course is unfortunately rather small compared to other language courses on the site, and if you don't have a microphone you can't do half of the exercises, but otherwise it's a fun and useful site. I've enjoyed my (recently less frequent) time using Livemocha. (...especially since I found a way to game the points system so as to be able to "buy" more courses with the points much faster than I would otherwise...)

I love Duolingo, but it sure has some weird quirks. The other day, I spent nearly an entire lesson focusing on kitchen sponges.

Tengo una esponja.
La esponja es amarilla.
Translate: The sponge
La esponja es en la cocina.

There are other things in the kitchen besides sponges!!

Well, whoever utters this sentence obviously does expect the other guy to know the difference between the two as well, so I'ld expect it to follow an underspecified request like "I'll have one of those [gestures in the general direction], please".

Like what?? a sponge can and will cover most, if not all your cooking needs. And cleaning to boot!

in unrelated news, I went back to Duolingo, and it's complaining that I have no friends, so I'll go on a friending spree (or, like adding 2-3 people: I won't read this thread for usernames quite yet); my nick is the same as here, so I shouldn't be hard to find

I'd say it gives you some motivation to keep up your lessons if you want to compete with your friends. When I see how many XP Kex has already gained this week - and she is working, and I'm currently not - , I'm a bit more motivated myself to do another lesson.  ;)

Keep in mind that I use duo and memrise like others use linesweeper or solitaire ;D

I'm VonGooge on Duolingo (:france: and :sweden:). I only just signed up and now it's all I do on the train/bus!

Speaking of Swedish, does anyone know a good pronounciation guide or website or activity? Duo really isn't the best for that. Also, what's with Duo's Swedish turtle obsession?

http://www2.hhs.se/isa/swedish/chap9.htm This is the best pronunciation guide I've found. Some people also use www.forvo.com which has real people pronouncing words for you.

Speaking of duo, it seems they have recently started working on a Klingon course? o_O

What exactly are you surprised about? Klingon was designed by a linguist, it has a vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, transcription, very much like the languages in Tolkiens universe.

The only part where the Star Trek guys pulled a fast one is the supposed original Klingon alphabet - it was effectively designed by the props guys, and thus poorly, if at all, linked to the language.

Just seems a little odd, I guess, coming from a company like Duo? It's like of Rosetta Stone started offering Elvish or Dothraki
