Title: Welcome to the Language Board
Post by: Eich on October 28, 2014, 06:05:22 PM
EDITED in 2022 by Jitter:
Welcome to the Language Board! It was started in 2015 as a temporary test, and has endured! So, this board is for discussion about different languages, and about learning and using of the languages.

Are you new to the Forum? Some tips on getting started with the Forum can be found here: https://ssssforum.com/index.php?topic=1297.0

Jitter out

This will be a place to talk about languages, as per the suggestions of our user, Headfinder.  This board is a test, and will last until the beginning of December.  If it gets enough activity, and people really like it being here, it will stay.  I'll put up a poll at the end of November to collect opinions on the trial.

Headfinder's idea:
Quote
Something more relaxed, a board for free discussion of foreign languages and cultures, where speaking a foreign language is actually encouraged, that's what came to my mind when I read multiligual; and that's something I might back.

Maybe we can get nordic or romance threads, learning threads for specific languages, history threads, or even vocaroo threads: Post something in your language, make a recording of yourself on other people's posts and link it to the thread for laughs, rating, learning and tip sharing...
Whatever comes.

He also suggested a method to moderate in multiple languages.  We'll be relying on you users to report abuse of the rules (http://ssssforum.pcriot.com/index.php?topic=3.0).
It'll take a while for this board to find it's comfortable place, so start making threads.  Many threads will likely drift out of use in the next few weeks, but that's natural and happens in every board.  So, get cracking.  Make some threads and lets start talking!

Edit by Feartheviolas: Removed the "better name to be decided" from the topic name

Hmm, suggestion: What about moving the Language Exchange Program, Learning Russian, and Learning Nordic Languages threads over here? They're all more suited to the Languages Board than the General Discussion Board.

I thought about that too! Good idea :)

Yesss! Also, what other threads would people like? I'm currently thinking about:

- Romance thread: speakers of one of the romance languages may talk to each other and have fun trying to understand each other

- Nordic thread: same as above, Nordic version

- Conversations with natives thread - for beginners to confront themselves with native or fluent speakers.

Title suggestion: I love Headfinder's idea of "Tower of Babel"

Maybe it would be a good idea to wait for moving the language topics Lenny sugested - if at the end of November, we decide to close this board again, they would all need to be moved back.
But of course they'd better fit in here.

Well, the same problem would exist with any other threads created here, right? We might as well try using the language board as it would be used if it were going to stay permanently ;)

I think moving the topics is a good idea. Moving them is pretty easy, but I'm going to wait for more opinions.

And for the forum to start working again. I have to reload while opening every other link here...

A thing that would be nice (not compulsory, just a nice thing to do if you have the time and energy), would be to include English translations of the other languages you speak, when you can; this way people who don't speak any of the languages in a given thread can still follow a bit what's going on, or use it to try to learn the language.

Google translate usually gives you a pretty good clue as to what people are saying even if there is no direct translation.

Yes, but the reason so many people liked Headfinder's idea was because he suggested sharing our language, translating it and encourage understanding, not the contrary. I'm actually thinking we are starting to retreat in our Nordic and Romance corners, exactly what we shouldn't be doing, so Rollo has a point.

I agree with Rollo and you about delivering an (even simplified) english translation.
The risk of splitting the SSSS group by languages is real (Babel powaaaa !) but nothing is yet done : this is a young experimentation in a young forum, I think we are still at the Hello ! Bonjour ! Ola ! Guten Tag ! step.
The by-language-family forums will obviously appeal to native speakers, but it's up to us to visit our neighbours (which reminds me I should refresh my german) rather than keeping stuck in our cosy conversation clubs. What's your opinion about this, mesdames et messieurs ?

And I mean, I understand translating is a lot of extra work and energy, don't feel obligated to do it if you don't wanna —I'm just saying, it's nice if you do!

Welcome back!  You certainly hit the ground running, with 12 posts today.   :)

I'm sorry to hear about the job.  Were you terminated, a la Michael Madsen in the prologue?  Or did you do the terminating?

Ah, that's a relief!  And congratulations for completing 5 difficult tasks (whatever they were) at work!

FYI, for a dose of language pedantry:
In English, "terminate" implies ending something forcibly, usually under unhappy or unplanned circumstances.  So you could terminate a malfunctioning software process; a contract; a pregnancy; or an unsatisfactory employee.  "Terminate with extreme prejudice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terminate_with_extreme_prejudice)" is a euphemism for "assassinate."  (The linked quote from Apocalypse Now neatly illustrates how the literal meaning of "terminate" in the sense of "fire Kurtz" morphed into "dispose of him.")

I know I said I'd make a poll at the end of November to gauge this board's success, but it's pretty clear that people like it... so... that's why that poll hasn't shown up yet.  If anyone still wants to see the poll, just for fun, I can put it up; just give a shout.

Unnskyld! Really, really stupid question...how does one put the language flags in their signature?

Aw, no such thing as a stupid question.  We all wrestled with this.

Put colons around each country name.  As an example, I'm adding extra spaces so you can see the colons:
: poland :
Eliminate the spaces and you get: :poland:

Handy guide here:

And welcome to the forum!  We've enjoyed your comments on Disqus.
Would you consider introducing yourself on the Introduction Thread?

I figured them all out except English, which is my native tongue...

Nevermind. Got it.

But on the topic of flags, does anyone know how to get the Finland-Swedish flag?  <.<;;;  My Swedish is a lot more Finland-Swedish than rikssvenska. . .

Also, a flag for Nahuatl?

I can look into maybe getting the fenno-swede flag for you. I don't have one on hand, but we can make one.
What does the Nahuatl flag look like?

I think you're our first Nahuatl speaker, Tasuhecate.  Is your name from that language?  And can we coax you to come introduce yourself on the Introduction Thread so we can get to know you better?

Hey guys!  I meant to post there, I just haven't done it yet (mom popped over and I got distracted).

As for a flag, I realized belatedly that Nahuatl doesn't have a proper flag. . .I'm used to unilang's flag system, where a hover over the flag tells you the language - they use Mexico's flag for it, I believe?

The Fenno-Swede flag would be awesome!

My name is actually part Finnish! Tasku = pocket.  My ex's mother used to call me her son's "pocket" girlfriend.  XD  So I combined it with my usual handle "Hecate", for when that's taken.  Works like a charm!  I'm also not fluent or anything in Nahuatl, I just find it so fascinating, so I thought I'd mention it.  :3

Also, Argentina's flag doesn't seem to show up when I tried...

Mildly off-topic, but what are those "Chapter Break Survivor" icons about?  Also, oooh, Icelandic! I've always wanted to poke at it properly!

The chapter break survivor ribbons are made by starfallz. If you are there for a chapter break you get a ribbon at the end. If you are a new reader you won't have any, but if you've been reading in the past you get one for every chapter you've been here for.

Also come learn Icelandic! I started a thread for that and I am here to help with questions you have about it :)

I might!  Also, how do notifications work?  I have this thread set to notify, but...I haven't seen any?

But derpy me just found the "new replies" button. This is what I get for living on the Lacky forum and pretty much inhabiting the "your posts" and "active topics" board.  xD

As for Icelandic, maybe!  I'm notoriously flaky when it comes to setting goals like that.  >.<;;;

If you hit the "Notify" button (from the selection either above or below this thread), you'll get e-mail notifications every time someone posts to this thread.  Like now, for example.   :D

I turned off notifications because I was getting too much email, but then I spend way too much time here anyhow...  :P
