Installation Hacks for Different OSs
« on: September 05, 2017, 07:15:26 PM »
The game was written only for Windows, but in the interest of seeing that people who use a different OS and might not be particularly tech-savvy can play, here's a place to share any workarounds anyone has found for getting it to work on various systems. Currently I'm at work finding one for Ubuntu.

Ubuntu (and probably other versions of Linux)

All right! I have one for Ubuntu! (Will probably work for other versions of Linux as well, but I can't personally test those.) Open a terminal and type:

sudo apt install playonlinux

You'll be asked for your password and then to OK a license agreement, but other than that you just sit back and watch it install, and once it's through you'll be able to click on the game icon and play, just like that.

Here's another thing that Linux users might need to do if you want to be able to save a game. From the command line:

sudo mkdir /saves

sudo chmod -R 0777 /saves

On my computer at least, the directory that the game automatically saves to has restricted permissions. So what I had to do first was A) create the necessary directory manually, and B) modify the permissions of that specific directory to allow read/write permissions for all users so the game didn't end up throwing an unauthorized access exception every time I attempted to save.

Thanks!

I resuscitated a pair of Win7 netbooks with Mint (Qiana), so I'm looking forward to trying this hack.  :)

I have word from the comments that either wine or playonmac will allow for gameplay on a Mac system. I don't ever use Macs if I can avoid it, so sorry, no detailed instructions this time. (Though command line installation ought to work just fine for Mac as well as Linux.)

I'm on a Windows machine myself, but I want to thank you for this thread and your efforts. Good job making it possible for others to play and test.

No luck on Linux Mint 17, either in Wine, or play on Linux.  All I get is an inset black window, with a chunky white cursor.  The cursor at least follows the mouse input, there is just nothing to click on.  Battle for Wesnoth and Nexuiz both run well, but they were ported to Linux.  I'm probably doing something wrong.  :?

if anyone figures what I need to do to have it run on Android, I'd love to see this game on mobile  ;D (on larger screens at least, I think it would be awesome). Maybe I'll try to install DosBox or something similar, I've read it can be used to run .exe files

Alessandro Pira ported Battle for Wesnoth to Android.  (It worked so well I almost went blind, lol!  ;D )  Maybe he has a blog about workarounds like that?

Good luck!
