City of Hunger - prototype discussion

The first testable prototype of City of Hunger is out! :D So I guess there should be a thread for when people wants to discuss and share their experience with it.

Like this one where that damned spider finally dies:

This is sooo cool! And it's a prize from someone with borderline zero gaming experience, but also pretty much zero percent of interest in playing, due to lack of much needed skills (like, basic reflexes, or decent enviroment perception) and a tendency to self-impose crippling psychological pressure when it comes to such activities. So I sort of ignored the project till now, obviously keeping fingers crossed, but putting it on the "not for me" shelf. Good that I decided to give it a try!
The art is AWWWSOME, because of course, comparing the efficiency of battle depending on number of exp points has for the first time ever been entertaining for me, and not a nonsense drag, and the adrenaline rush of killing these damned spiders is comparable to the one I get when confronted with a real-life spider (though I usually try not to kill them with fire. Maybe I should. Maybe it would be fun.) Great enjoyment all around.

I've been grinding around all day, and it's so much fun. Little to do, but what there is, is so great. I especially enjoyed figuring out you could click on this rock

For a bit of additional lore/theory fodder. I know I'm not the first to discover this, but I love discovering stuff by myself

yes, that piece of info was cool!

some file-tinkering info: if you change the save-file so that Emil/Reynir/Mikkel is already in your party when you leave the 1st room, they're not added twice in the game:

(Sigrun doesn't get added if you remove her, though: you can play in hard mode)

some other things I've noticed:
Onni is seriously OP (well-aimed shot at level 2 does 17dmg on its own)
You can't add more objects (no rocks, dead rats, lousy knives)
Reynir and Emil won't fight if your team contains Lalli, Mikkel, Onni (so you get 3 fighters only, or 4 if you also have Sigrun). They get some EXP though, a little bit
your money counter displays 9999999 if you're exceedingly rich

So we have official-ish confirmation that Onni is the sixth playable character. Nice. Too bad it makes Sigrun the only female, though.

Also I'm sure most people have found it already but in The Main Menu you can see what I presume is our little group standing near the giant shaft/hole thing. Just thought that was a little fun detail.

Yeah looks like it, I would be liked to see how Tuuri would have been as a playable character, but I guess she'll have a more story oriented role then

Yeah, I've been thinking that as well. First the comic, now this? WTH?

I mean it's fun, but basically it's to easy.

All you have to do is run around find the little three spiders and farm them for basically ever, work you're way up to level 10ish and boom. Done. You can defeat anything.

It's a good looking prototype so far especially for a new game from a women whos never coded before. Nice job minna.

The only thing that's missing is a difficulty setting. But other than that it's on a good track.

huh? how did you get to play Onni an Lalli? Looking behind the scenes or can you pick them up at this point?

Save a game, find a location of the saved game file (it's plain text), and alter Onni and Lalli's party membership status from "false" to "true". (I don't know where this is located on a Windows system, you'll have to ask a Windows user.)

speaking of the background, if you break a save-file (missing semicolon for instance) and try to load a game, you'll get a screen with only the very pretty background and nothing else :)
(I'm not putting that in the Bugs thread because doesn't count as one I think)

Thank you! But hnm this gained me a total battle squad of Sigrun. Gotta see if it helps to start another game and jump back to the save with Onni and Lalli in them..
*edit* that gave me the original party, still no Lalli or Onni.

Unlos, try replacing someone in the party with Onni and Lalli so you have 4 characters, that should fix it

The others should be there, they just have no image: in the Party page, their background is blank instead of the usual image, and in fights, you can click the blank "portraits" at the bottom. Unless they're not here at all, in which case I don't know
