it keeps coming up in the general discussion thread whenever there's a significant change in avatars, and this kind of thread has been suggested before, so:

... I've changed my avatar more than I should have probably (aka to the point that I don't even remember what order they went in, and have probably mixed them up with my tumblr avatars too) and I've only been active on the forum for like three months. It went something like this:

I started with a screenshot from the game trailer for "The Last Guardian". It quickly changed to Lalli. Now I have a feeling that I'll have a long line of Lalli related avatars.  ;D

I'm now worrying for Dipper's safety (I haven't watched the newest episodes I but know stuff went DOWN) because this is more accurate than I'd like it to be.

It's fine, Dipper's got a loving and caring family who can make sure he doesn't get into trouble.
Julian on the other hand has Sara, who's at the end of her tether in all likelihood, Alexis, who has standing orders from his CO not to let "that mad nerd" near active-deployment Cleansers ever again, and Haiz, who is only there because the Seiður Academy told hir to be.
Between the three of them, I imagine they form the trio of "It's your turn to babysit this idiot!"

GF-sona avatars is actually a very cool idea! One that could be taken further. For starters Haiz' sona seems kind of Mabel-y.

Aw.  Actually, Sara is quite fond of Julian, who reminds her a bit of her late first husband (the impetuous one), and also of her bright 12-year-old nephew.

Besides, having spent her entire adult life trying to be responsible and practical (while being personally interested in something IMpractical, namely the now-vanished pre-Rash world), she finds it rather refreshing to be around someone who isn't fettered by any such considerations.  (Even though she often has to remind him to eat and occasionally even to change his clothes.)

I would follow suit, but with my current avatar and the available space in the frame I think it would look like a dunce cap (maybe a bit appropriate, maybe a bit over the top).

This is an absolute truth, very rare foreign words survive the Icelandic language... and even they're not safe. Pizza's been one such loan word that people thought would last but recently the Icelandic version, flatbaka, has actually become more popular (possibly because it sounds silly but that's beside the point).

Thank you! The couple in the pic are from Warhammer 40K and they're actually super-soldiers in power armour. The guy is an Astarte, the woman is a Sororita (Astarte, but female and without 5+ years of surgical and chemical enhancements). If you dare dwell into depths of /tg/, there used to be (still is, maybe?) a lot of Astartes/Sororitas shipping, so IIRC, this pic is some remnant of this.

That's random! xDD I get a few comparisons like this. Someone saw him as a fusion of Peter Dinklage and David Morse (before he had the black hair colored on) and then some thought I was sculpting some basket ball player I don't even know about.

Not a huge history, but here is a woodcut from a 1950s edition of Kalevipoeg (the Kalevala in Estonian) that I used as my first Forum avatar.  I like the telepathic image, is all.

My next avatar came after the craze for posting self-insert characters as magical girls in dreams.  I came to late to that party (as usual) and my drawing posted featured my stubbornly non-magical character appearing as most of us appear in our dreams, sans pants.  So my character was desperately embarrassed and trying to pull her very large sweater over her even larger pantsless hips.  Understandably, this went over like a lead balloon, but I was able to adapt the embarrassed face as an avatar.  It does correspond to how I feel much of the time trying to post the odd edit or drawing.

Fortunately, I make a post every year as well, so there is a record! Hah, would you look at that: "someday" came after all.

No, it's a detail from a Chocolate Box exchange present I did for Unlos - a tribute to the first adventure in the style of the artist Peter Max.  (I'm pretty sure I crossposted it to the Art Museum? Definitely on AO3 & Tumblr.)  It's slightly eye-watering in its entirety.

It's May 12th. Which is to say, it's the 4th anniversary of the day I joined this forum. Although I don't come by so often anymore, this forum holds a special place in my heart, and gave me much-needed human connection during times when I was in transition in my life and couldn't get much contact IRL. For that, I'll always be grateful.

I always commemorate this day with a new profile picture, and this year is no different. Slowly, my profile picture approaches what I actually look like. (I'm pretty sure the glasses and hair comprise about 90% of how people recognize me, anyway!)

I thought I'd try something a bit different from my usual full-digital stuff, so I made the sketch in pencil and only colored it digitally. I think it turned out pretty well!

Y'know, when I first created that, it was indeed a Yellow Submarine homage to Adv. 1 in Peter Max style - or so I thought.  I found out a couple of years later that the artist on Yellow Submarine (whose style I was ripping off) was actually Heinz Edelmann.  I was chagrined and embarrassed, but delighted to stand corrected.
