Title: Arts & Crafts
Post by: Laufey on May 29, 2015, 06:41:10 AM
I've looked everywhere and I can't find one, so here is an Arts & Crafts Thread! Here we can share non-ssss crafts and projects! Basically anything that doesn't fit into the main (or sub) art threads.

I was trying to dig up some other pictures for another thread and randomly came across some old enamel paintings and jewellery pieces of mine... so hey, why not. :D

Copper + enamel paint

This is done in my earlier technique that dates from when I didn't actually know how to paint with enamels. I was really lucky to pick my exchange year at the UCE like I did, because just that year we happened to have a professor there who was a specialist! My previous teaching had been on the lines of "here's the pigments and there's the mixing oil, have fun" so that year I actually learned more about enamel painting than ever before or after.

Silver + cold enamel

Btw cold enamel is just a fancy term for anything that dries to a glassy surface such as 3D paints and epoxy glue. :Þ These were made by first soldering the whole thing together and then spreading glittery 3D paint over the heart area.

What's that modeling dough called again that you have to bake to harden? Made of that anyway.

I'm a very serious goldsmith.

Copper + enamel paint

Here's another style of painting with enamels, this time with better technique.

How does enamel painting work anyway?

First you spread a layer of enamel to the backside of the piece. This is usually some leftovers of previous works enamel, its only purpose is to stop the metal plate from warping while you enamel the other side because that takes many rounds in the kiln. The other side is then cleaned well of any impurities it suffered while in the kiln for the first time.

The background colour goes on first, melt to a nice, smooth layer. Wait for the whole thing to cool, touching out-of-kiln lukewarm glass can at worst make it shatter and that's both annoying and painful. The pigments are in powder form so you mix them yourself with mixing oil. Then the painting is done by layers upon layers that each get a firing in the kiln, the older the layer the deeper it sinks into the glass.

Every time you take the work out of the kiln something unplanned may have happened because the paint both spreads and floats a bit, depending on how long it's been in the kiln and what kind of background enamel you have, the differences can appear in a matter of seconds so sometimes it's all down to luck! It takes ages and lots of coffee breaks and it's the best thing in the world (I miss my kiln so much).

Haha, the dragon floodgates have been opened!! Seriously, I have a ton of dragon stuff to share. No apologies for my obsession  ;D So here I have some paper-cuts I did last year.

I don't know if this counts but here is some origami

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/8-ucMta-cOY4foVTiYNQwJYPqqZm2aTMvI10e_zBZv0=w611-h675-no)  (https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/8ssk14nxyuCT42vpw5LkFqzJvQVbwetauKW6HYp8gg8=w489-h675-no)

When I was in second grade I was so obsessed with origami that my teacher started calling me The Origami Queen. Eventually it got way out of hand and origami had to be banned from the classroom... oopppsssss...  ::) But ever since then I've kept it up. One time I made an entire zoo for my cousin. These two are pretty simple, the one on the left is a kimono and the one on the right is a peace crane, which is pretty commonly seen. I've had the pattern for it memorized for years :)

I *love* origami, which I first learned around the same age (in Hawaii, where there's a lot of Japanese influence).  The paper is gorgeous -- did you buy it in Japan?

EDIT:  Mélusine, the crane is quite easy to fold -- it's one of the few origami pieces I've memorized.  If you can't find instructions online in French, I'm sure Viola or I could find them in English.
Or hey, maybe there's a demo on YouTube?  Visuals might make it easier for a first-timer.

Yeah I got it here, my aunt is a native so she showed me where to get it and which ones to pick out. They have so much beautiful paper here and it's the real paper too, so it's really nice and soft to use. It almost feels like cloth.

Oooooooh, you know how to make origami ! :) Your peace crane in origami is something I want to learn to do.

I was thinking of doing tutorials in the art tutorial thread. Or when I get back home maybe I will start an origami thread and post how tos there and other people can put things. I don't know how popular it will be, but I would love to teach you and anyone else who is interested :)

Wow, you've got a Japanese native as part of your travel group.  That must really help in terms of translating, guiding, ordering food, etc.

I think origami would be quite popular here.  Can you imagine some clever soul creating a paper Lalli, Derp-Kitty, or Cattank?  (The latter would probably be a hugely elaborated version of the inflatable origami bunny, another one of the basic folds I know...)

And yes, please do an origami tutorial :D mainly on the kimono.

Yeah it's really good to have her. I think she's also the only one in the group that understands my need for art too. We had a really nice talk about painting the other day when she finally had a break from trying to guide the rest of our huge group :P

I was actually working on a design for a paper Lalli before I left. He'd probably be the easiest to start with since he's so angular. I haven't designed origami in a few years though, so it's slow going. The kitties would be simple to do, just modify a basic cat design, and if I have a moment (or maybe when I get back) I can fiddle with that bunny design and try and make a cattank.

I might be a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to paper creases bordering on OCD hahahaha
I can post the instructions for the kimono if you want. The pattern came with the paper and I thought I'd try it out. It's not something I made up. But I can also show how to do it as well if it would make more sense than the directions. Maybe a voiceover video or something.... (but that would have to wait until I get back from Japan).

Time to rob a shop. We always need beautiful paper, isn't it ? ::) I went in an art shop with a friend saturday without needing anything and went out with a notebook (but a cute Shinzi Katoh one with a cat, it's not my fault !), we always need notebooks too, isn't it ?

In lieu of a Lalli tutorial I have some flowers for you guys.

I promise I am working on it, but due to limited bandwidth at our current location I am unable to get all the pictures I need uploaded. I think I may have to wait until next week to upload the Lalli, Sigurn, and Emil tutorials just because of the amount of pictures and data for each one. I will however work on the other members of the crew in my spare time, and I believe there is also a cattank that wants to be made. I am still taking suggestions for SSSS and non SSSS things if anyone wants me to make/figure out something.

Edit: I can do them, but they will take a bit of time to upload

Ok, so this isn't art in the regular drawing-on-a-piece-of-paper sense, but it's creative stuff that I made, so I'm going to go ahead and put it here. You see, I make jewelry. Lots of it. This is a few years' worth of my mom's collection, accumulated from birthdays, holidays, and the ever-present "Ana! I need something to go with this outfit!"

That's nice thread!  :D

So, my main hobby is glass art. I started in 2007, when bought book on glass painting. I enjoy painting on various glasses (vases, mugs, jars and so on) and making fanart on books, poems, musicals, movies, serials.

I would like to share some pictures. I made a preview, and full size is under cut.

When I began to learn Japanese, I started to write some hieroglyphs on glass. Here is an example.

Recently I do not have enough time for my hobby because of work, so I paint some fanart and — rarely — some pictures on glass.

I had a bit of extra time during the weekend (got tired of cleaning up + ran out of yarn) so obviously I had to put it into good use... hairclips happened. Fabric, 3Dpaint, beads and embroidery. Dangerously fun to make, will probably result in way more hairclips and lots of neglected responsibilities. :D

Yesterday was remembrance day so I had no school. I got kinda bored of sitting on the computer after a while and decided to do something new; I made chainmail!
It's made out of can tabs, here is the tutorial (http://www.instructables.com/id/Genuine-chainmaille-from-pop-tabs/)

And I also (finally) attached the handle and cross guard to my sword. (I made the blade a while ago, I was just too lazy to attach the handle until now.) I just cold forged the blade, I do not have a forge yet. (Cold forging is when you just hammer at the metal and heat it with your hammer strikes. It takes a lot longer though and the metal has a hammered look. It is not really forging, just hammering it into a new shape. It makes the metal a lot weaker too.)
I think it looks pretty good!

It is full tang:

Here you can see the hammered pattern on the blade:

Luth, what sort of metal did you start with? Asking because if you ever get a forge you could possibly reshape and temper it.
Title: Re: Arts & Crafts
Post by: Athena on November 12, 2015, 11:33:23 PM
I used galvanized steel piping with some copper piping as the core (just picked it up at home depot).

Post by: Róisín on November 13, 2015, 12:04:53 AM
Wow! I haven't the first idea how that would temper. I've never cold-forged anything but copper, though I've seen other people do it with iron. Mostly I've just used steel bar-stock, or bits of old tools and machines. My old display sword I hot-forged from an old cross-member of a crane jib. There was enough metal for two, so I made one the same for one of my cousins. It's shaped but not edged, because it was for stage work. Some people use old leaf-springs from cars and trucks to make tools or blades, it works quite well.

The copper is much softer and easier to shape, doing the steel took a lot of hammering.  :-\

Cool! When we were buying materials we ended up with a lot of extra too, we actually ended up making three swords and a couple of knives from the cuttings. My brother sharpened his second blade but I probably won't sharpen mine.

I like to bind/rebind books. The first is a finished hard cover notebook, second is a mid-process copy of Full Metal Alchemist, and finally is a rebound copy of the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons rulebook.

(Having an advent wreath at home is extreamly popular here; it comes from Christian tradition, but became a general pre-Christmas decoration - you don't need to be religiuos to buy or make one and enjoy it)

This is a craft, so I guess it's the right place to put this.

My brother and I finally built a forge! [+1 to life goals completion] It's made of some leftover bricks from when we had our patio redone, and for an anvil we use a slice out of a steel beam mounted on a tree stump.

Here is the overall design:

A slightly closer look inside:

The chimney ended up looking like the aRTD logo... (my fault)

And after going out to buy a couple bags of charcoal and a better hammer, we finally got to see it in use!  ;D

Luth, what are you using for a bellows? I've seen everything from an actual bellows to a vacuum cleaner jiggered to run in reverse used. My sister used a hair dryer for her microforge when she was making tiny fine stuff, and there's a silversmith/goldsmith/bellfounder who uses a bellows that works a bit like one of those treadle sewing machines. It looks good! Main thing is to manage the coal bed and the airflow so you don't get hot and cold spots.

Don't have much of a plan for that yet but we did take an old piece of piping and try hammering on it! We have basically no experience with forging except some cold forging last year, so we're just getting some practice. I made a little hook thing and the bit of piping kinda turned into a spear.

You guessed it; a vacuum running in reverse. It is a little too powerful, and too concentrated on the coals so it did end up with only one hot spot and the rest barely burning. We're planning on building some system to split the air before it goes in, which would also make it less powerful because at the moment there's so much force all the coals are blown around, and away from the hot spot. :-\
Title: Re: Arts & Crafts
Post by: Róisín on February 23, 2016, 10:51:36 AM
You may have the airstream too close to the coals? If moving it further back is not an option, try placing a metal grid or grating where it will break up the airstream. I take it you are burning charcoal? What kind? Smiths in the old days used to modify the heat output of their fire by several methods: changing the depth and shape of their firebox, making the actual bed of coals deeper or shallower, adding wood to the coals (preferred woods were hawthorn, oak, ash (NOT rowan or mountain ash wood, but the actual ash tree, Fraxinus, the one with the little rotor-looking seeds called ash keys.). Hawthorn burns very hot, oak and ash cooler but even and long-lasting. Make sure the wood is dry.

Really the only way to work out what works for your forge is to experiment. Have fun!

Not as long as you'd think, because you really only have to cut out a quarter of the pattern! It's a lot like a paper snowflake that way.

This is on origami paper, actually! It's especially nice because it's thin and folds well. I've tried scrapbooking paper, but it's too thick to be able to work with easily. I could try foil paper, though... And I'd like to try some ombre type patterns too.

That looks a LOT easier than my coiled spring steel cut into slightly overlapping rings, which is what I used to make my mail. And much easier to knit with two pairs of pliers. At least you're not doing it as a couple of my more authenticity-minded friends did, by riveting Each. Single. Individual. Ring. It took them months, because they were both tallish guys, but they had the proper forge tools, and had based it on a mediaeval Arabic pattern. The end result was stunning.

Your piece might make a good insert into leather armour. Given that ring-pull tabs aren't very tough metal it probably wouldn't be all that protective, but should be fine for cosplay.

Yeah, It would be pretty useless for anything other than cosplay! Most are either aluminum or some seem to be made of a stronger metal? I can tell because some take more force to cut/bend. :)

You are correct! Origami paper and an X-acto knife. And patience. Lots of patience!

Thank you all for the kind words!

This time it isn't papercutting, surprisingly. I got a pair of plain white shoes a while ago because I wanted to draw on them. Today I decided on a "Starry Night" theme and went to town, and I'm really proud of how it turned out!

Ana, those shoes are very pretty! And I like how the picture flows across both shoes. Also useful idea for someone who has trouble telling left from right - a friend of mine does designs on shoes for her dyslexic child, so the kid can tell by the art which is which, without being embarrassed by having a big L and R.

I was thinking the same thing while making them! I had to double check that I was drawing on the right sides to begin with, since my grasp of left versus right has never been that great :P I've also hear of people cutting stickers in half and putting half in each shoe to help kids get it right. Easy and inconspicuous.

I found some leftover wire from and old project a few days ago, and since I was too lazy to find anything other than a pair of pliers, I just turned it into some wire earrings.

Well, here's my latest workshop project: Dual viking seax-style fighting knives!

Spoiler: heavy on images and text • show

Sad to say, I'm not doing it the "proper" way - I'm not really forging them from scratch. My brother bought a bar of metal for a knife he made (more of a shortsword, actually) and I'm using the leftovers. (O1 Carbon steel, these things will be very strong after I temper them!)

Here's an interesting infographic which I used as a reference when planning from this site. (http://www.warehamforge.ca/norse-knives/)

First of all, I cut the 21'' long piece in half:

I marked out basically where the handle would go, then moved on. That step took a whole day (about 5+ hours of just sitting there with the saw blade grinding at this metal) and you can see I ended up with a little bit of heat damage on the tip there.

After that for a few months I didn't have much time to work on it, but I got back to it last weekend, carving one of the handles:

It started out as a big block of wood, which I first cut down to size, then started carving away at to get the general handle shape. It fits quite nicely in my hand, and I'm almost done now. Might stain it, but it'll most likely just be wrapped in leather when done.

I added some more details on the handle last night, and started grinding out the tang (decided on a tapered shape) earlier this evening. I'll post more photos as it goes along! :)

I did some Over the Garden Wall papercutting in the form of a luminary (with an electric tea light, of course), and I thought I'd share:

Big note: The artwork is not mine: I adapted it to work in papercut form. The right image is from the cover art of the OTGW soundtrack. The left image I found online and have since been unable to locate: if anyone happens to know what it came from or who the artist is, I'd love to know so I can give proper credit!

And once again, I come to spam this thread with stuff. Because apparently my goal is to learn every fiber art technique known to mankind.
And I'll gladly set aside the 500 years required to complete that task!

Today's technique is tablet or card weaving, a type of weaving in which you string various threads/yarns through holes on cards and twist the cards to raise and lower the warps in a specific pattern. It's incredibly sturdy stuff, and very good for edging or belts (which is what this piece will become). I also thought that this particular pattern might work well for SSSS cosplay, as it resembles a more intricate version of the edging on the crew's uniforms.

Your tatting is so very delicate! And the tablet weaving is nice - I have several headbands made by that technique. If you look up 'Finnish Iron Age Tablet Weaving' you will find some fascinating patterns.

Ana mentioned its made with tablet weaving; I found a guide to it here (http://www.shelaghlewins.com/tablet_weaving/TW01/TW01.htm), you can make all sorts of patterns with it.

Luth, you found one of the sites I used to learn! This (http://www.earthguild.com/products/riff/rcdweave.htm) one is helpful, too.

Krisse, if you were asking about the specific pattern, I couldn't trace it back to a specific website, but I do have the pattern. It's in the spoiler below.

Card weaving isn't too hard, and it's super easy to find the materials to do it! You can make the cards yourself out of cardboard, and the only other thing you need is yarn and somewhere to stretch the yarn out. The patterns can be a little tricky to read, but once it's started it goes quite smoothly.

I have many question, cuz I get almost nothing from those pics, but most important is, how long the yarn (orwhatever) has to be?

(maybe, is there any video how to make it because I can't get how to make it by those not-too-useful pictures?)
Title: Re: Arts & Crafts
Post by: Ana Nymus on May 27, 2017, 09:14:59 PM
It depends on how long you want your finished piece to be of course! I started out with lengths of yarn that were 6 feet (~1.8 meters) long, and the finished piece was 5 feet (~1.5 meters) long when I was done: more than enough for a belt. I know I've seen videos on youtube, though I can't say how good any of them are since I've never watched them. A search for "card weaving tutorial" or "tablet weaving tutorial" should give you plenty of information!

I bought a knife last summer which came without a sheath, and ever since I've been thinking I should make one. At comic-con a few weeks ago I bought a roll of hardened leather (it was quite expensive, but my brother and I spilt the cost), so tonight I sat down and tried my hand at some leather working!

No process pics, sorry, but here's my process:
I started by cutting two rectangular pieces roughly the length of the blade, and twice as wide. Then traced the blade shape on them, then made a few holes by using a punch. I attached the two pieces together just with screws through those preliminary holes, just so the later holes would line up for sure. Then I punched a bunch more holes, threaded it together with an old shoelace I found, and tied it off in such a way to make a belt loop.

Here it is finished!

My fingers are in so much pain now after all of that, but I'm really happy with the finished product! It's a little rough, but it is my first time doing this sort of thing, and it certainly serves it's intended purpose! :D

Edit: Ana, thanks for the other link! If I can find suitable yarn I certainly would like to try that pattern.

I bought a knife last summer which came without a sheath, and ever since I've been thinking I should make one. At comic-con a few weeks ago I bought a roll of hardened leather (it was quite expensive, but my brother and I spilt the cost), so tonight I sat down and tried my hand at some leather working!

*Sees blade and handle*
I don't see any markings on the blade but is that a Moraknife I see Luth? A good purchase!
It's a good use of materials and a nice first project.

Yep, it's a Moraknife! Seems to be an older model though for sure - I got it at a garage sale. And yeah, its a great knife!
Thank you! :)

I thought so, having a bunch of those myself  ;D
You got the 'classic' model there, they are still being made today but your's obviously a old and well used one.

This is so pretty! I never heard of card weaving before, but it sounds cool XoX

All I have to say is that making chainmail is tedious, but immensely satisfying. I finally invested in some proper rings (bronze) and I'm making a box chain necklace for my mom's birthday. (although it may turn into a bracelet, I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it long enough for a necklace in time!) :D

Luth, that is beautiful work! I'm sure your mum will love it.

As you say, it's tedious work. I remember telling you awhile back that my mail shirt took me above six months to make, and I reckon now you can see why. I worked on it during long and boring commutes, like knitting with two pairs of pliers, and if I had time to work on it at home, usually late at night, I occupied my mind with reciting tales and poems.

Did you have a jeweller make the bronze rings?

Thank you as well! I sure hope she likes it.

And yeah, I can see how it would take that long! Just that relatively short segment took me a few hours already (although a fair bit of that time was spent just figuring out the weave, and getting in 'zen' mode working at it). I have heard it said that making mail is a bit like knitting, and I certainly understand that now.

And the rings came in the mail, I ordered them online from a site called 'the ring lord', it was quite convenient. (Though expensive for shipping costs, they have an extensive collection of metal types and ring gauges, so I could get exactly what I needed pretty quick.)

Luth, that's beautiful!

Ana, that's a really pretty pattern. I remember doing simple card weaved band in school when I was 14, but I got help threading the cards. I see the tutorial Luth linked that they're mentioned as slim bands but really they can be pretty broad. Below is the belt belonging to my costume, its about 15 cm broad, made with pretty thin thread and more than hundred cards. (Not made by me!)

As for using card weaved bands for cosplay, good idea. I've always imagined the bands brick woven of a pattern like the ones I've linked below:

Oh, that's absolutely lovely! I like how the direction of the twists are alternating: it gives the piece almost a knitted look with all the little "v"s. Card weaving can theoretically be used to make fabric of any width, but because that requires so many cards and quickly becomes unwieldy, it usually is only used for thinner pieces.

So, I made this really weird random striped cowl/scarf thing. I made it mainly for when it's gonna start getting cold, this way I can have it mostly blocked out as breathing cold air is very difficult for me (thanks, asthma). I think I might make it a bit longer, I'm not sure yet.

Oooh, pretty chain mail! What are you making with it?
My sister used to make chainmail pretty much nonstop when she was living at home. I think we were still picking metal shards out of the sofa years later, haha! She made some cool stuff though. I've always been interested in it but never had a definite goal to work towards.

I've been working on a scarf for my best friend. She asked for purple and blue, hopefully she will like this yarn.

It's going to be a glove! Probably fingerless, though. I put a ton of hours into working on it last week, because I was visiting my grandparents house in Vernon, so I spent a lot of time just sitting and chatting while working. To be honest, I didn't really have a definite goal to work towards when I started either - it is a pretty enjoyable thing just for the relaxation that comes from focusing on the repetitive activity, a bit like meditation. I assume knitting is the same.

Now that it's bigger, you can sorta see the shape it's taking:

Nice work Luth! Are you fastening the ends of the rings in some way, or just butting them together? Also, having done both knitting and mail-making, yes, the mental relaxation is similar. During the very early years of the New Varangian Guard, I and another founding member used to share an hour and a half late night bus trip once or twice a week (he was the bus conductor, I was on my way home from a late shift at work). At that hour I was often the only passenger, so we would sit up the back of the bus and companionably knit mail for the whole trip. The occasional other passengers would cast quite puzzled looks at the fortyish woman and the long-haired youth knitting mail and arguing amiably about sword technique.

From middle of high school to the moment I moved around Paris for a job. I discovered that calligraphy wasn’t made at all for left-handed persons and learnt to do letters with my right hand... *Memories* We were a good group of friends. I grew with them, in a kind of way. Sadly I am too far away for that now.
Live action role playing is... interesting, as long as you’re not stressed as I was when I tried one... maybe more than one year ago ^^

Thank you, Róisín! I found the pattern as a picture online with no identifying information, so it could well be based on an old Finnish pattern!

Iceea, that's very high praise indeed! I'm afraid I don't take commissions, if only because my scatterbrain wouldn't get around to completing them for a year. Thanks again! I wish I had a better camera to really capture all the fine details, but my phone will have to do. Refract3d, I honestly have no idea how long this took me. I worked on it on and off over the course of a few months, but in terms of actual hours spent making it, I'm unsure. Certainly over 10 hours, though, that much I'm confident of. The patterns was quite complicated, and I had to maintain my concentration or I'd lose my place (and figuring out how to undo the work and go back takes a loooong time).
