Title: Music that fits SSSS?
Post by: Gwyrion on September 19, 2014, 12:15:06 AM
I was just wondering what kind of music, if any, you guys listened to while reading the comic. I know I love to listen to specific kinds of music, or even specific songs while reading things, and I was curious if anyone else here did that too! And if you don't, then what kind of music do you think fits the comic thus far? You can post songs you think go along with specific chapters or pages.

Tough question.  I'm trying to think of what music it would have as an animated film...
For exploring the Silent world, even just panning nature shots, I feel like certain parts of this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySvXYETgOws) would be good.  Dark and mysterious, with an otherworldly romantic feel... it's beautiful but it's scary to think about.  That's how I envision their world.  Maybe it would go well with an introductory scene to lay the setting.

An animated film would be so great. As a kind of trailer music I think this one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSH-_ScN6G0) might fit the general mood of a brave expedition into a desolated world.

Imagine a scene, from year 2 or something like that, where the survivors of some Scandinavian village send an expedition to a neighbouring village to find out how they were doing. Parts of this one  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbpqZJomHpA)would go well with the part where they find out all elements of civilization around them has been wiped out by the disease.

Great question!  Some of the replies to the general Music Thread (http://ssssforum.pcriot.com/index.php?topic=9.0) addressed this.  (Others just recommended a lot of great music to listen to.)
I'll take the liberty of repeating some of my replies from there:

I find that Finnish composer Jean Sibelius makes a great background for both Minna's epics.  He was deeply interested in Finnish folklore and the Kalevala, and set several of its episodes to music.  (He even tried to reproduce traditional runo-singers' rhythms.)

Directly relevant to ARTD or any mention of the past in SSSS:  The Swan of Tuonela (the river of death).
/>
Finlandia, a musical tribute to his homeland.  The slow, solemn part at the end later got turned into a Finnish patriotic hymn.
/>
Kullervo, a retelling of a Kalevala hero's wretchedly tragic life.  Luckily, the music has cheerful parts (and a hot, sexy part in the 3rd movement).  It also features an evil talking sword.  Music:
/>Texts of the two sung parts are on the last 4 pages of these program notes: https://www.grantparkmusicfestival.com/uploads/pdf/Program%20Notes-Sibelius.pdf

Jaeger March
This music is rated M for Manly.

I've also amused myself imagining an appropriate "mix tape" for our team as they head out into the wilderness.  I'll put that in another message.

Haha wow! So have I!

Except my music tastes are pretty weird. ;__;
I'd love to see yours!

Someone already mentionned, in another thread, the pieces of Ligeti that are used in 2001: A Space Odyssey; in the same creepy-atmospheric vain of silent-world appropriate music, some of the soundtracks created by the late japanese composer Toru Takemitsu can be quite impressive:

Kwaidan (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAcVfr4sIcM)
The Woman in the Dunes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ceienj-4QfQ)

I'm probably biased because they're one of my two absolute favorite bands, but Pariisin Kevät's "Saari" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OI4QSDq1Z-A) seems relevant.  Some lines remind me of the theme of exploration and sense of danger throughout the comic (...älä katso taakse siellä joku niskaan hengittää...), while others remind me of certain characters (Lalli and ...luulen näkeväni henkimaailman olentoja joka nurkassa, viikatemies mua jahtaa, me ollaan aina samassa seurassa... being the prime example).

Another song I relate to SSSS is Kent's "Sundance Kid" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVbbx5P4PNA).  The emergency siren at the beginning and overall mood of the song are nice with the story, I think.

I heartily second the Ligeti suggestion.

Music that fits SSSS?
Fanitullen, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cc-WGo4N8h8) obviously.
What, you think it sounds cheery?

Clearly you haven't read the original poem to the song
Quote
In the hardened days of yore
when with beer and brawn
the knives of Hallingdale
from their sheats were often drawn
when women to the feast
funeral shirts would bring
with which they would swathe
their dead husbands in
there once took place a wedding
somewhere in Hemsedale4
where song and dance did cease
and the men did ring the vale.
In the center of the floor
framed by shoulder-broad men
two stood with knives unsheated
and a leather belt round them

And like columns carved
unmoving, serene
another four stood
as guardians of the scene
They lift burning torches
toward the blackened beams
where curls of smoke collected
to a dark and brooding stream

In vain two women try
howling, to stem
the living wall of bodies
raised before them
Angrily they’re thrown back
and left to despair
while the fiddler quietly sidles
toward the cellar stair.

Down he goes to tap beer
as the winner of the fight
may have need to kiss
the bowl's rim tonight.
Within the belt they'll duel,
blood running like sap
the vein will need refilling
from the beer casket tap.

Standing in the cellar
he saw a bluish glow
someone sitting on the casket
tuning fiddle, holding bow.
This man held it backwards
tightly to his chest
and as soon as it was tuned
put his fiddle to the test.

There came a song of wonder;
It rang like angry words,
Like steel bite into wood
Like fists rammed into boards.
It jubilantly roamed
Around the darkened cellar hall
And came to a halt
At the sound of a fall

Quietly the fiddler listened
to the mighty flow
It was like the music’s eddies
went down his spine and brow.
He quickly asked the other
“Where did you learn that song?”
The answer: “Don't you mind that,
But remember it – for long!”

But as the man bent down
Reaching for the tap
He saw a horned hoof
against the casket rap
He forgot to tap the beer
And ran up to the hall
Just as the men were lifting
The body from the fall

Fanitullen it is called
This wild and haunting spell
And in Hallingdale they play it
And they play it well
And when its tune is singing
to beer and feast and brawn
again knives of Hallingdale
from their sheats are quickly drawn

Original Norwegian version:
Quote
I hine hårde dager
da ved øldrikk og svir
hallingdølens knivblad
satt løst i hans slir, -
da kvinnene til gilde
bar likskjorten med,
hvori de kunne legge
sin husbonde ned;
stod der et bryllup
i Hemsedal etsteds,
hvor lek og dans var tystnet
og karene slo krets.
Ti midt på gulvets tilje
i den mannslagne ring
stod to med dragne kniver
og et belte spent omkring

Og som utskårne støtten
i hvilende ro
står ennu fire karer
i kretsen om de to.
De løfter tyrilysen
mot det sorte bjelketak,
hvor røkens virvler samles
til et rugende lag

Forgjeves tvenne kvinner
med hyl trenger frem
å bryte det faste gjerde
som er stillet foran dem.
De kastes vredt tilbake
av de muskelsterke menn -
og spillemannen rolig
går til kjellertrappen hen.

Nu skal han ned og tappe;
ti den seirende mann
kan saktens vel behøve
å kysse bollens rand.
I beltespenning nappes
de kun med blodets tap;
så må vel åren fylles
fra tønnetutens gap.

Men da han stod i kjell'ren,
han så et blålig skinn
én sitte der på tønnen
og stemme felen sin.
Og karen holdt den omvendt,
tett opp til brystet klemt,
og gav seg til å stryke
så snart han hadde stemt.

Det var et spill som dugde;
det klang som vred manns ord,
som hugg av stålsatt bile
og som neveslag i bord.
Det jublet og det hulket
i den skumle kjellerhall
da slåttens toner endte
med et rungende mannefall.

Taus spillemannen lyttet
til de mektige løp;
det var som spillets virvler
nedad ryggen ham krøp.
Så spurte han den annen:
"Hvor lærte du den slått?"
Han svarte: "Det er det samme,
men minn deg den blott!"

Nu mannen med seg lutet
og etter tappen tok -
da så han hestehoven,
som takt mot tønnen slo.
Han glemte rent å tappe,
han sprang i stuen opp -
der løftet de fra gulvet
den falne mannekropp.

Fanitullen kalles
ennu den ville slått,
og dølene den spiller,
og spiller den godt.
Men lyder de grumme toner
under øldrikk og svir,
da løsner atter kniven
i hallingdølens slir.
Doesn't sound quite so cheery now, does it?

Oh, that's nice. I think I'm going to have to check out more of their stuff.

My most recent favorite of theirs is "Innan himlen faller ner" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qhpqe1xUOLQ).  The chorals are beautiful, and I suppose it veeery loosely fits the sort of post-apocalyptic theme of SSSS.  "Dom andra" and "Isis & Bast" would be my other recommendations for Kent, but I don't think I can make those fit the story.   :-\

This is the part where I spam this topic with links to (modern) Finnish folk music, right? :D I mean, it's totally appropriate.

Sanna Suoni-Kurkio - Vaskilintu  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTnn50r1rf8) (English translation included.)
Poropetra - Luonnotar (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3odZItfbq0) (Nature goddess)
MeNaiset- Kuulin äänen  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nogNV13TA-A)  (I heard a voice)
Nostatus- Sanan synty (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCCB4wjlXmc) (The Birth of the Word)
Suo- Hiiden hirvi  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhG9izd9E_4) (Moose of Hiisi.) This one fits aRTD more, but I think it's atmosphere is quite good background music for SSSS.

And there is this one, which is not folk music, but just as beautiful as well. It about yearning for peaceful and better old times, which is quite fitting too. There is English translation under the video.

/>Íslandsklukkur (Instrumental)
This one I think will be most appropriate at least until the grandeur of setting out passes.

/>Tröllaslagur (Instrumental)
This one will be best when the comic title comes into effect.

I don't know if the lyrical versions of these would fit the mood because it seems the ones I remember have been removed from youtube. Also finding good translations of the lyrics is hard.

This one's good too, but the right mood for it is probably yet to come for a while.

These are great!  Thanks, Aquilae!

Actually, I think your third song (the lighthouse song) would suit the Iceland part of the Prologue.   If not Arni's distress at shooting down the refugee boat, at least the heroic resolve of the rest of the Coast Guard crew.  It already sounds like the entire Icelandic Armed Forces are singing.  Just stick in a couple of lines about "mutated, man-eating whale-beasts" and it'll be fine.  :)
Title: Good playlist sharing service?
Post by: Sunflower on September 26, 2014, 12:49:19 AM
Can anyone recommend a service for sharing playlists?  I'm putting together one for Our Heroes to launch into the Silent World, and I'd like to make the music easily available.  (Since I can't exactly mail a mix tape to each of you, though that would be awesome...)

I use iTunes at home, but I've never used its Shared Playlist feature.  So I don't know whether you need to personally own all the music in a Playlist.
YouTube has a lot of the music I like, but not all of it.
Spotify?  Other services?
It would need to be free to sign up for, available globally, and not spammy.

Thanks for any ideas y'all may have.

Title: The SSSS Road-Trip Soundtrack! (Take 1)
Post by: Sunflower on September 26, 2014, 04:59:59 AM
I've assembled a soundtrack for the Corps of Discovery's venture into the Silent World.  I intended it to be somewhat in the spirit of "Guardians of the Galaxy Awesome Mix" -- that is, a music collection made by someone here-and-now, which somehow seems to have survived on CD for 90-odd years until it pops up in Our Heroes' vehicle (which also, somehow, seems to have a working CD player).

The versions on paper and on 8tracks are somewhat different; 8tracks has a more limited repertoire than YouTube, and not all the available tracks have great sound quality.  This is my first venture onto 8tracks -- or any music-sharing service -- so I'm sure there are technical glitches I didn't recognize or couldn't fix.

I tried to include music from each of the countries represented (including Iceland), and a tribute to each of Our Heroes.  (For example, "Light My Fire" for Emil and "Sounds of Silence" for Lalli.) Still haven't found ideal themes for Captain or Doc (beyond the reference to "my family doctor" in "Good Lovin'."  And I gather the Scandinavian countries all have thriving metal scenes.  But death-metal isn't my thing (though hey, if it's yours, rock on with your bad self).

So I welcome any edits/improvement to this playlist.  Or better yet, compile your own!

A tune I listen a lot to currently is Arvo Pärt's "Summa"; while it's a bit solemn, I think it would fit in SSSS for scenes of quiet exploration, when their vehicle is strolling around in the silent world's countryside.

A nice thing about this song is that there are a number of different versions and interpretations of it, which is always nice for a theme tune in a series/movies, when the same melody is declined in different moods:

Quiet vocal version (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFAbeg2hwdc)
Bit energetic instrumental version (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4BR8q3tt0o)
Gentler instrumental version (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IePOJRsHX1A)

The composer is estonian, which is like, almost finnish :p

I listen to movie music a lot, and I've found How To Train Your Dragon soundtracks, both first (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SagTkN19veU) and especially the second (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyH9TQ9nPjo), to be pretty awesome background music for SSSS! Suitably (faux) Scandinavian, plenty epic.

Sigur Rós also goes quite well with the quiet parts, and the scenery porn :)

Post by: Sunflower on October 09, 2014, 03:29:54 PM
As Our Heroes finally get rolling, I ran a poll for suggested soundtrack music.  I got some great suggestions after offering these initial choices:

1) "On the Road Again" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TD_pSeNelU) by Willie Nelson.
2) "Movin' Right Along" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6w316aA8ed8) from the Muppet Movie
3) "Born to Be Wild" by Steppenwolf
4) "Road to Nowhere"  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWtCittJyr0)by Talking Heads
5) None of those, you aging American cultural imperialist silly-person! How could you have overlooked __________?!?

Jessica by The Allman Brothers Band (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfM6nRVBvGs). Tuuri will get the vehicle straightened up eventually.  [Editor's Note:  Theme to Top Gear, something I had to learn from Wikipedia.]
Phantom Of The Opera (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8IuFl3sMhk) by Iron Maiden.
Green Onions (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bpS-cOBK6Q) by Booker T. & the M.G.s.
All Along the Watchtower by Bob Dylan (Hendrix cover)

And I wasn't even thinking about references to cats, but some of these haz them!

Plenty of others, too, depending on how you wanted to spin it in your mind. Chariots of Fire perhaps? Ride of the Valkyries? The Magnificent Seven? Bonanza? I'm going to keep an eye on this thread...

If this series ever was to have a score, I imagine it would maybe sound a lot like the Game of Thrones OST, albeit more lighthearted tracks.

For example, in the moments right before and through the troll attacking the train(starting with the clouds covering the moon again), we'd get a soundtrack that sounds something like the White walkers track (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UB0q_gxtmOs) from the GoT OST.

Heh, I just spent nearly an hour collecting video links and then my phone's browser crashed and I've had to start again....but on a laptop instead.... U__U

So! These songs arent very scandinavian/Nordic, but when I hear them I think of SSSS anyway :3 (also, I have weird music tastes..... ;__;)

The Legend of Ashitaka (hey it censored again! hehe X'D) from Princess Mononoke, it just seems to match the epicness of Minna's landscape and scenery pages.

One song that reminds me a lot of SSSS is Ég á Líf (I Am Alive), Iceland's 2013 Eurovision entry.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtunhyMW1hM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtunhyMW1hM)

(I totally voted for this song in the final)

Translated lyrics:

Quote
I set out upon that long journey
I walked on lost and restless
Didn't think about anything until the following day.
I chose peace and tranquility.
I am alive, I am alive
I glide above every hardship
I am alive, I am alive
When the winds turn against me

I climb over the high mountains
I am alive, I am alive
I didn't understand about love, which can move everything
Didn't dare to embrace and to simply exist
I felt like I didn't deserve to open up my mind
And let the bright love enter within

I am alive, I am alive
I glide above every hardship
I am alive, I am alive
When the winds turn against me
I climb over the high mountains
I'm alive, I'm alive because of you

And I believe it
Yes I do believe it

Perhaps the wondrous gates of heaven will open
Beautiful love will flood out
to embrace me alone
I'm alive, I'm alive
I glide over every difficulty
I am alive, I am alive

When the winds turn against me
I climb over the high mountains
I am alive, I am alive because of you
I am alive, I am alive, I am alive

I really wish I could animate, I can perfectly imagine an AMV to go with this song...

While perhaps a bit too aggressive, I think there's a lot of stuff in the Shin sekai Yori(From the New world) OST that would be close to something fitting.
Much of the soundtrack has been pulled from Youtube(though you can find torrents of it elsewhere (http://www.nyaa.se/?page=view&tid=438484)), but I think soundtracks like Traditional (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Be0HqIhC48c) would fit neatly for epic landscape views.
I didn't fangasm over this anime as much as many others did, but the soundtrack is seriously impressive, and much of it is pretty fitting for a post-apocalyptic series like this.
Title: MY soundtrack/mixtape for SSSS
Post by: Hrollo on October 12, 2014, 09:42:38 PM
After thinking a bit, this is what I would put together if I was in charge of making a soundtrack of SSSS :P

My first idea is that the soundtrack will have a light side (for all the character interaction and humor) and a dark side (for the ... other stuff).

Let's start with the light side; one word: jazz.

Character themes:
Tuuri's theme should something a bit enthusiastic and starry-eye'd, gentle but not too gentle; Out of Nowhere (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlgp4Y64D1I) played by Coleman Hawkins and Django Reinhardt.
Lalli needs something weird and mysterious, an bit velvet like; A Night In Tunisia (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQYXn1DP38s) played by Dizzy Gillespie.
Emil needs something frantic and boisterous, but that also shows his "partnership" with Lalli… so how about a very different version of the same song as Lalli? A Night In Tunisia (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHKyVJ5YfNU) played by the Jazz Messengers.
Sigrun needs something very upbeat, with a military hinge to it, but still with goofiness; Blues March (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOES7AZ-d60) played by the Jazz Messengers.
Mikkel needs something quiet, but ambiguous, which could be seen as both reassuring and threatening; 'Round Midnight (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojtuDUbRoxI) played by Thelonious Monk.
Braidy well, we don't really know him yet, but from all the pictures I imagine something cheery and happy, but rather gentle; Honesuckle Rose (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01eyCD6twDU) played by Thelonious Monk.

Some ambiance tracks:
Such Sweet Thunder (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McGysWP0Jzo) played by Duke Ellington and his orchestra.
Lil' Darling (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMibKxQWRnw) played by Count Basie and his orchestra.
Stardust (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djTpuq6RruI) played by Lionel Hampton.
Love for Sale (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywhutgpZLVk) played by Miles Davis.
Stabblemates (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yn3L6ikBK9A) played by Benny Golson.

And now there's the dark side of the sountrack, the side of the Silent World, of trolls and giants. Here too, one word: Alien.

As in, the sountrack of the movie Alien, composed by Jerry Goldsmith (if you haven't seen the original Alien, only the action-packed sequels, I really recommend it; it's a really well made sf mystery-thriller, about a bunch of space truckers who stumble upon an unknown planet from which they accidentally bring back something horrible; kind of the fundation of modern sf-horror —and so a distant progenitor of SSSS through Dead Space). Seriously, it fits perfectly.

I dropped this in the theme song thread, might as well drop it here.

I can't really go over how it fits, heck even my explanation in the other thread isn't really justified. Really, if I can just imagine something along to a song, that's how I personally determine its value. And I can only imagine SSSS with this...

I don't know, much of your soundtrack seems to focus on the darker side, while I think that we should be seeing more humor, light-heartedness, and pseudo-familial bonding going on.

I quite like this. I specially like the idea of two characters sharing leitmotif's, but I would actually pair Tuuri and Lalli instead of Lalli and Emil. Perhaps even adding a third variation of the theme, for specific acting together moments?

And while I think the an Alien-like score is pretty much spot on for those moments when the comic does go dark, I think I agree with Noah - at least for now. There' still plenty of time for the comic to turn all darky-mcpants on us.

Well I kept the jazz selection light mostly because I didn't want to bore non-jazz people before they even reached the other part of my post. But certainly we can add more jazz light themes, it's not like the repertory to chose from is limited :P

That Pärt suggestion is brilliant.
I have a few ideas:

Bo'arigh by Frog Pocket (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpdoLEbYt5o) for a chase scene - there's time for some sneaking and build-up, and then for a flat-out run from something angry - and fast!

The Haze by Echoes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KCA-paB4DU) for Lalli's nightmares.

Lots of stuff by Emancipator could be good; Bury Them Bones (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E65NANd4-8Y), for instance, but also Rattlesnakes, Vines, Old Devil, Ares, Minor Cause, and Dusk to Dawn.  Plenty of tracks for long walks.

Running To The Sea by Röyksopp (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qzz_Bm0uaWs) might make for a good montage of survivors trying to escape the first trolls.

I'm certain Dead Can Dance would have a few good tracks - Host of Seraphim (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpMNXEY_tio) from The Mist comes to mind.

And when you're on the offense?  Tyr might have something for you: perhaps the Norwegian sailors had a take on Tróndur í Gøtu (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXjF9po2hYk) that told a different side to that story that they chanted as they went out to slay sea-trolls?

Don't know if this actually fits SSSS that well, but, meh. For some reason I keep listening to this(+ various Princess Mononoke soundtracks) while reading. Kinda gives off this weird tribal-like vibe. Some Finns may recognize this from somewhere ;D

Guys, GUYS. I have found the MOST AWESOME soundtrack ever.

It's meant ESPECIALLY for the scenes in which shit gets real, magicky things happen, and also for that kinda dramatic thing where a person/people stand in the middle of total destruction, still and unmoving, staring silently at whatever with wind blowing through their hair...that kind of stuff. So, I present to you:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7bQKbQm4VY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7bQKbQm4VY)

....why yes, it is an x-men -movie soundtrack. But hey, the soundtracks are the best thing in those movies. This one, at least. This one is pure awesomeness.

what about the prolouge part where the ship blows up the refugees, or  *just* after that? Like, if there was a film, the song could go there?

OKAY so on the encouragement from Sunflower, I'm revive-poking this thread
(maybe i should actually read through this thread, seems like a pretty good thread)
((sorry for not searching for this thread ahahahah))

I already posted it in the Musical tag (aaaand the edits tag......)
but
I made a playlist on 8tracks (http://8tracks.com/zeeruffleraptor/scavengers-of-the-silent-world-1)
it's all instrumentals: celtic-y stuff and soundtracks and stuff
I tried to mix old and new sounds, and uh, capture the feel I get from the overgrown wilderness of postapocalyptic scandinavia

I honestly spent a lot more energy and time on this than I should have, which is why I'm posting it everywhere ahahahaha ha ha I hope you like it

So first some Finnish folk music (I don't know some of these have already been posted >_< )
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpmGRcXdLL4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpmGRcXdLL4) Manattu by Värttinä
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65h-1dMg_5g (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65h-1dMg_5g) Linnunmieli by Värttinä

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4GChhuXGis (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4GChhuXGis) Manan Unia by Suo ("Dreams of Underworld/Death")
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvXemyT06BI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvXemyT06BI) Talviuni, not actually traditional but Kannel music in any case. :)

Other types of music
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QsLEBzQIos (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QsLEBzQIos) Om du möter varg, Detektivbyrån

^ Some of those are rather appropriate if only because of the names. O_o

Well here's a song I associate with mysterious lands and journeys and find therefore appropriate for this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxLI5Mjs_Wk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxLI5Mjs_Wk)\

The song I always think of when I think of people walking or passing by what was once a great city. The theme songs for the Danes, basically.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKkeDqJBlK8 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKkeDqJBlK8)

Someone - I think it was origamiowl, suggested the legend of Ashitaka as a theme. I think that fits perfectly as well. Princess Mononoke, with its angry spirits, shares a certain similarity in feel and sensibility for this setting.
But you know what else is thematically similar? Nausicaa.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZUppxT38Zk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZUppxT38Zk)

Music for the dreamworld and magic more generally. Maybe.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dN1UowShBk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dN1UowShBk)

I might as well just dump the whole how to train your dragon soundtrack while I am at it.

Minnions I've found the Kastrup song:

Welcome to Kastrup (for Emil)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwKY3I5sLI8 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwKY3I5sLI8)

I'm picturing it with Dangly Eyeballs, Toothipede and Emil's reaction faces. And a photo of grinning victorious Sigrun and traumatized Emil as the finishing touch. I feel the need to make a video of this, even though I've never done anything like that at all. there's so many pages worth of scary stuff and reactions and the song's so short!

Tuuri's theme:

The nightmare before Christmas - What's this?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPblZa10_Pk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPblZa10_Pk)

The excitement and enthusiasm at new things, I can imagine her going "what's this" at everything when She gets to Sweden.

Poor abandoned Emil:

The Beatles - Don't let me down
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LD4w_QDx3-c (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LD4w_QDx3-c)

He's already set up with a spotlight and center stage. In a little alternate reality beween panels Emil breaks into song.
Yes, convince yourself that Lalli loves you too  :'( Plead with him to not to dissappoint you...

Torbjörn's theme ;D

Janis Joplin - Mercedes Benz
/>
Emil's spirit animal:

Look at the lion strutting in, so proud and dignified. ;D That guy's got Emil's bad luck and clumsiness.
Not much of a song but for translations: This lion belongs to Kleopatra. He's got the strengh of twenty oxen, alas he's lacking wits.

1st is this one since I was listening to it when I was reading the first pages of SSSS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HVsgAWdQX8 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HVsgAWdQX8)
2nd This one I find quite fitting for a few moments https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4D5IOrn7Kg4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4D5IOrn7Kg4)
3rd Particularly this specific cover https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlYoRGri-q4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlYoRGri-q4)
4th And this one just makes me think of all the characters https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYVwqJCIdR0 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYVwqJCIdR0)
:) There are many more, I was also composing something on the organ in the house, might record it and post it.

Might just be me, but I think the track 'Further' from Far Cry 3 really suits the prologue. Especially the bits set in Sweden and Finland: I really got the feel of people fleeing north, alone, as their world collapses around them - and putting a brave face on it all the while.
/>
And on the other end of the emotional spectrum, 'Friends' by Miracle of Sound for our intrepid crew. The song's about the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy, but the central theme of a crew of friends standing up for each other fits SSSS quite nicely. Plus it just sounds like the sort of thing that would get put on the Cat-Tank's CD player as they drive off in the morning.

OK, people

I need some honest opinions.

Two days ago I started playing around in GarageBand, when suddenly

Inspiration

I just finished this, and while working with it, all I could think of was vast landscapes with mountains, trees, rivers, lakes, fjords, mist, faint sunshine, snow, and a little moonshine through the darkness. I could also see some trolls and giants and beasts roaming the lands.

I'm just not so sure how well you guys think it fits to SSSS.. I hope it does, because this was so much fun working with and I want to make more(for example cast member themes, even though I only have an exact idea for Sigruns team as I know more about norwegian folk music than anything else) but if it doesn't fit I'd like to know what does so I know where to find inspiration.

So heeeere goes:
SSSS - Prologue (https://soundcloud.com/wildfire-14/ssss-prologue/s-Ltjgh)

Edit: LET ME KNOW if the link doesn't work, I've made the song private because I signed up for SoundCloud only to share this song with you guys, but if it doesn't work I'll make it public and post the new link.

I'm listening to it right now
It's awesome! >w<!

Meeeeeep this made me so happyyy~ thank you!

OK, people

I need some honest opinions.

It has begun, my innocent, unexpecting friends.

Ragnarok is here.

And so is Reynir's Theme (https://soundcloud.com/wildfire-14/reynirs-theme/s-jgUqq). After having posted the first attempt on Music in this thread, I felt like doing more because it was fun, and I started working on Reynir's Theme. I tried having it sound like something icelandic folk music-y, but I failed so let's just agree that this song is dedicated to Reynir on Adventure.

I have also made Sigrun's Theme and Lalli's Theme, but I'm not posting the links until I have spoken to my Chosen Victim of Feedback-ing, DancingRanger.

I hope at least some of you like it..

Edit: Also I am SO SORRY for double posting but nothing happened here between my reply to DancingRanger and my New Song. Please forgive me!

I'm glad you think so, my friend! It's so nice to hear that my music is welcome!

Here, have a playlist (https://soundcloud.com/wildfire-14/sets/ssss/s-ScXAz), including the now approved themes of Sigrun and Lalli.

I'm currently working on Tuuri's Theme, and will move on to Emil and Mikkel after I've finished Tuuri. I hope that in the meantime, the four songs in the playlist are enjoyable! : )

WOHOO, SUCCESS!

I'll work on it tomorrow. Right now it's 11:34 PM, and I am so tired and my head aches. So I'm going to bed, but I can promise you, when I wake up, I probably will start the day with working on Tuuri's Theme.

Also, I'm so glad you like the songs! : D Then I have entertained at least one person with my "skills".

Fast and furious before I go to bed:

Tuuri's Theme (https://soundcloud.com/wildfire-14/tuuris-theme/s-6FBgc), also added to the playlist mentioned earlier:

I wasn't sure about Tuuri's theme at the beginning, because I almost felt it was too plain - but the thought was that it should be lighthearted, enthusiastic and encouraging. Maybe with a hint of naive curiosity - and of course the flute/clarinet-interaction was meant to symbolise her multilingualism, even if I think that might be clearer to me, who made the song and therefore had this exact thought when I composed the two parts, than it might be for you, who probably cannot read my messy mind.

I hope you guys like it nonetheless, and please let me know if there are something you think should be changed. I feel it's far too easy getting away with this. : P

Usually when i'm reading the comic I'll have music from the Penumbra soundtrack playing (here's a playlist (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SNnle_fojQ&list=PLB7257F117E1DB6E2), some of the tracks are a little out of order though). It's mostly ambient and spooky with some calmer stuff mixed in, but I think it's pretty fitting.

Emil's Theme (https://soundcloud.com/wildfire-14/emils-theme/s-JTyYw) - and don't worry, I have plans on making a tribute to his glittering, perfect hair. I swear. It just - didn't happen this time. This time only explosions and watching the fire spread from afar happened. Emil's Theme is also added to the earlier mentioned playlist. : )

Hope you have a great day, people. : )

Wow!  Beautiful but creepy.  What or who is Frakkur?  YouTube is turning up lots of comments and links about Jónsi -- is he related?

Also, I found another Frakkur track that reminds me of SSSS because of the little squeaks that sound like kittens to me...

I'm in love with Jónsi's work :) Sadly, I discovered his old Frakkur project years after (a few months ago), and had complain about how impossible it was to find all.

"Beautiful but creepy", a perfect definition for the dreamland, to my mind.

Just something a bit more traditional, a tröllaslagur (= troll battle/troll dance) or a rísaslagur (= giant battle/giant dance), simply named as Tröllaslagur. Slagur is a name for a type of a Medieval poem and means either a battle or a dance. They're believed to be meant for dancing to but very few hints remain as to how, although one theory is that slagir were acrobatic/meant to show off the martial art skills of the dancer. Be it this way or that I'm sure it's pretty obvious why I'm thinking this fits well into the SSSS world... :D

This is another style of music I find appropriate for the dream world, this one largely because of A Redtail's Dream. Or at least, variations on this.

Bloodborne provides a few track appropriate to the monsters.

Back in the early days of this Forum, some talented person did an animation of Sigrun doing the hallingdans, based on motion-capture from a similar video.  We speculated about who'd be holding the stick with the hat (or rather, the troll-head) for her to kick, and decided only Emil was pretty enough.

A general theme for the Silent Lands. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HogliqC06Ac)
Öresundsbro decontamination facility. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5a3zVpJWUJI)
Spot 24. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeXXM2RGBXg) The part after 1:40 (https://youtu.be/PeXXM2RGBXg?t=100) fits especially well - 1:45 (https://youtu.be/PeXXM2RGBXg?t=105) is approximately page 249 (http://www.sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=249), 2:02 (https://youtu.be/PeXXM2RGBXg?t=121) is when Sigrun, Lalli and Emil notice the dripping from the vent shafts and split up, 2:45 (https://youtu.be/PeXXM2RGBXg?t=164) is the death room from page 254 (http://www.sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=254). 3:10 (https://youtu.be/PeXXM2RGBXg?t=189) is when Sigrun starts looking for the troll nest, 3:35 (https://youtu.be/PeXXM2RGBXg?t=213) is when she finds it (http://www.sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=256). At 3:56 (https://youtu.be/PeXXM2RGBXg?t=234), she decides to get the hell out of Dodge and returns to the death room (no more dripping, the wooshing sounds from 2:45 are back), 4:46 up to the end (https://youtu.be/PeXXM2RGBXg?t=285) is probably the build-up to Emil encountering the troll on the ceiling at page 260.

Pretty much anything made for Silent Hill 1-3,
,
when exploring ruins during snow etc.

when exploring the "dead-room".

when crossing the bridge to the southern world point

when Emil has blood and teeth fall on his head, with the camera panning up to the ceiling 12 seconds into that song (you'll know it when you hear it). Or just
for the entire part

/>Oh oh oh and this one! Especially this one when Lalli walks alone through the empty streets, the moon shining brightly at the ruined facades, grave-stone skylines litter the horizon, unseen eyes following his footsteps through the crackling snow. Memories of who they once were, what they once were and never again will be. Song fades as the snow once again bury the human footprints, they don't belong in this city anymore...

Hell the Black Mesa soundtrack has tons of great songs that would fit into this universe

I'd be overjoyed if the Finns did a joik during the story

I'm not sure what everyone else will think of this, but I listened to this album (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ln3BmBHAJ-c&list=LLhjMM7q-Ftq_Q19kLItjcPg&index=22) a lot while reading SSSS for the first time, and it really struck a chord with me. The music fits well with the darker moods of the comic, especially the prologue, as it has quite a slow, thoughtful tempo with a urban(?)-sounding ambience in the background.

Anyways, enjoy!

For all those dramatic landscapes, 'Stormur' by Sigur Ros:
/>
For the lead singer's brilliantly Norwegian accent, 'Lover, Where Do You Live', by Highasakite (sic):
/>
Whenever it gets sad, 'Carissa' by Sun Kil Moon:
/>
To cheer you up after listening to 'Carissa' because it's so sad, 'Ysbeidiau Heulog' (Us-baed-ee-aye Hay-log) by the Super Furry Animals:
/>
Also, 'Nowhere Man' by the Beatles for whenever I see Reynir floating through the aether:
/>
I could say far, far more but I won't because then you'd have a comment the size of the page. Also, sorry for the iffy videos- best I could get off Youtube.

I've been doing nostalgia-runs of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic I & II lately, and this track (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnD95TDIsAc) from the sequel, although obviously a bit Star Wars-y, I feel fits for if or whenever they find some ruins that are still standing in perfect condition, besides the obligatory overgrowth, with signs of tragedy perhaps surrounding it

Sigur Rós matchs so perfectly in the Dream World that it hurts: the entire "Kveikur" album, some tracks from "Takk" (Saeglopur and Hufupukar, somebody?), and Jonsi's solos too.

Saeglopur began to play in a corner of my head the first time I saw the Dream World :) The water. Always.
But I love Sigur Rós and Jónsi's songs too much to be perfectly objective.

I'm listening to a livestream of Sigur Rós right now where they're playing their older, more ambient stuff and I've decided that their whole aesthetic/sound is just dream-y :)

Imagine yourself in the Stand Still, Stay Silent setting. It's Year 90. You are driving a beat up ancient Saab along empty pot holed roads in Copenhagen, Denmark. You know trolls are looking at you from the overgrown and abandoned buildings along the roads.

What (Danish) song would be playing on the car stereo?
Title: Re: What song would fit the mood?
Post by: Fauna on June 25, 2015, 06:15:22 AM
Knowing my luck? Trollhammaren. It's in Swedish, but still. It's a folk metal song about a troll that kills people with a hammer... 'The troll hammer sweeps again, chopping down, brother again, hear the last scream - the troll hammer is here'. I can just picture the radio switching over to a song about trolls killing people WHEN I'M IN A TINY ROLLING TIN CAN, SURROUNDED BY TROLLS. It would be such a deadpan moment

Sorry, I don't actually know any songs in Danish :D

I have this vague childhood memory of driving around the Danish countryside listening to Kim Larsen - Jutlandia. I think that fits.

If all you have in this scenario is a rusty Saab and you already have the attention of the trolls I'd look for a suitable dirge instead though.

Coming up: more unrelated video game soundtracks that can be shoehorned in SSSS!  :D
This time, they're from Half-Life.

The Dalahasten enters the dead city (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqw8C1JW70U) (p. 157 (http://www.sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=157)). Imagine some troll screams in the background, and it'll fit perfectly.
Anything involving Lalli walking around in the dream world (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmvf48amIfk).
...probably some kind of action scene or exploration montage that hasn't yet appeared in the comic, I guess? But hey, look at that title! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVTxM_CzgDU)

Bit of a bump but eh

Boards of Canada is pretty post-apocalyptic (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLgUnFI7UjI)

KUKL - Dismembered (preferably in Icelandic but the Icelandic version is pretty poor quality... and yes that is a young Bjork on vocals) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBVDFFLs6Fs)

Solstafir (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnkxnS8iZks)

Too industtrial? Idk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixA_fC-cLzQ)

This is actually Inuit but it's still really good (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qR1ekGJBEqs)

Viking(-esque) folk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbgvgk50e94)

I once had the song a CD (ages ago) that was burned for me.
It may have once had a label, but it didn't last long.

So I never really knew the name of the song or who had done it. It was very NIN like, but no guarantees.

For the ambiance, I guessing the whole soundtrack of Banner Saga (https://youtu.be/53xt9f_Y0rs?list=PL1Uj0cNo6vn3fV7TP6cfwF-IyPGYEYWbe) is just downright awesome.

For a grittier, darker soundtrack (even weirder), there's an old film called Ravenous that is just awesome (https://youtu.be/wDl4OhRN3bQ?list=PLbH2wBCd1e52s6-T5LXToP0d4VBERfKDC), and creepy too. As a sidenote, I totally recommend watching this movie. However, it is not for the faint of heart.

I associate Lalli's theme with songs of Secret Garden. To my mind, Prayer song fits him especially well, as it's like lullaby and Lalli spends much time sleeping and in his dreamworld.

And in general for SSSS, I'd prefer Secret of Kells, although it's about Ireland...

Ironically, for me it's always been the Mirror's edge soundtrack. Now I say "Ironically" because the music's so not-dark and more on the calm and active side. Something about running, stress and the constant slight unease in the music just makes it fit for me.

Especially "The Boat"

I'm a relatively new reader (I read the beginning of the prologue shortly after the comic started though, and decided to not follow along right away but to revisit the comic later).
I'm in Chapter Four right now, and have been listening to The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensembles From The Stairwell (x (https://soundcloud.com/tkde/giallo)) and The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporations Doomjazz Future Corpses! (it is almost the same band, only different aliases) for the last roughly two hours. I find it fits the comic very well.

I was thinking hard about if I knew some music that could fit SSSS and then I remembered Tuomas Holopainen – The Life And Times Of Scrooge (https://open.spotify.com/album/4r2U6NEYrfqUgSqYUdOzDM) (spotify link to album). It's based on The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Life_and_Times_of_Scrooge_McDuck) by Don Rosa (such a great comic) and it's just a perfect soundtrack for an epic adventure.

Here are a couple of youtube links:

Has it been discussed what music would fit any character's personality? I mean, what music would Lalli like if he had access to our contemporary music archives? And Tuuri? Mikkel? Everybody?

I don't know why, but I can't help imagining Lalli with a huge headset, ecstatically listening to Radiohead... or Sigur Rós... or The National, Sufjan Stevens, Alt-J, Arcade Fire, Talk Talk, Steven Wilson...

Tuuri, on the other side... more like pop? k-pop, like SUJU or EXO, and Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Bastille?... but she might have her Lana del Rey moments too...

Mikkel? Mmmmh...  Johnny Cash... Led Zeppelin, Rush, Genesis, Pink Floyd? Well, that's what I see him liking, at least. And something cheeky and punk too.. The Clash? Sex Pistols? You're free to contradict me.

Sigrun...eeeeh, dunno, what could fit an adrenaline lover like her? Classic heavy metal, of course: Twisted Sisters, Iron Maiden, AC DC, and maybe Kiss for working hours, but Royksöpp, Jamiroquai, Django django, for the relaxed days haha.. and something grandiose and epic too, like Woodkid (before battles) or Imagine Dragons.

Emil is hard haha... someone as worried about everybody else's opinion, I think he would like the trendy music (whatever it might be in Y90).  maybe I'd add someone that idolizes himself... like Kanye West, yeah, he could suit Emil. Or rappers that talk about success and making it to the top, that fits his own aspirations. But it's hard for me to imagine what could reside in the true core of his musical taste. Oh... oh wait... got it...
Spoiler: show
ABBA... he wouldn't be a proud swede if he didn't like ABBA

Spoiler: show
Haha, I'm kidding, but then, is there anybody that doesn't secretly like ABBA even a teeny tiny bit, in the darkest part of their soul?

Oh my goodness, I was forgetting Reynir!!! My poor sweet child! I don't know why, but if anybody here is familiar to El Mago de Öz I think it would suit him(at least the more lyrical albums). And Sigur Rós, Yann Tiersen, The Magnetic Fields, Passenger, and Mac DeMarco (don't ask me why).

Every statement made here is exclusively my personal opinion, only I am to be held responsible for it hahaha
I'd love to know what would you add or take!

Interesting idea.

Sigrun: maybe Sousa marches? Heavy metal? Inkubus Sukkubus? Korpiklaani?
Mikkel: Johnny Cash, especially the later stuff? Eric Bogle? Phil Day? Classical?
Reynir: Judith Crossley, especially the maritime stuff? Ar Log? Dowland? Leonard Cohen?
Lalli: Tony O'Connor's music, can't think of anything else that would suit him so well, with the wind and birdsong and water noises merging into classical symphony.

Can't think what would suit the others.

Mikkel probabably listens to some classic stuff like The Plasmatics or Bratmobile when he's alone, and then switches to Mozart when he's with other people.

And in general for SSSS, I'd prefer Secret of Kells, although it's about Ireland...

waahhhh this soundtrack is so pretty, I've been listening to it on repeat for like an hour while drawing, so mysterious<3
getting a strong dreamworld-vibe from this, especially the beginning

Oohh yeah, sometimes when I draw for several hours, I listen to the same 1-3 songs on repeat the whole time :D helps to keep the atmosphere, like, if you're drawing something mysterious and cool then you gotta listen to something that gives similar vibes

I should write something for SSSS.  Hmmm

So first some Finnish folk music (I don't know some of these have already been posted >_< )

...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4GChhuXGis (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4GChhuXGis) Manan Unia by Suo ("Dreams of Underworld/Death")

Heyyy guys, I know I'm quoting a rather old post, BUT I was reading through this thread and came across this song and I liked it very much! But in the youtube comments there was someone asking where the heck the Finnish lyrics were. Well, I searched and searched ans searched some more but found nothing! So I decided that I'd write them down myself, and so listened to this about ten thousand times on repeat XD I think I managed to get it mostly right(though you may of course correct me if I've misheard a word or two).

So I thought I'd also post them here in case anyone wants to sing along! Here:

Chorus:
Läpi maan, läpi manalan, läpi kuu'en kirjokannen
x4

Uneksin manan unia, ja unia
Maan unia, puun unia, ja unia
Kuljen matkalla aavahalla, tiellä tuntemattomalla,
matkalla kipumäelle, ja mäelle

Chorus

Kipukintaat kä'essä, ja kä'essä
Jalassa kipujen kengät, ja kipujen

Vierin viikon, vierin toisen
Naisten neulojen neniä
Miesten miekkojen teriä, ja teriä

Chorus

Kipuvuoren kukkulalla,
Kivi on keskellä mäkeä, reikä keskellä kiveä, kipuja kokoelee
Ei kivi kipuja itke, paasi vaivoja valita
Ei kivi kipuja itke, ei kipuja

Spoiler: a quite rough(and literal) english translation as a bonus: • show

Chorus:
Through earth, through underworld, through six spectrumskies
x4

(a less weird translation of "kirjokannen" would be something along the lines of "layers of skies/heavens")

I'm dreaming the dreams of Mana, and dreams
Dreams of the earth, dreams of (a) tree, and dreams
I'm on a vast journey, on an unknown road
I'm on a journey to the hill of pain, and to the hill

Chorus

Mittens of pain in (my) hands, and in hands
On (my) feet the shoes of pains, and pains

Rolling for a week, rolling for another
women's needles' heads
men's swords' blades, and blades

Chorus

On the top of the mountain of pain
There's a stone in the middle of the hill, a hole in the middle of the stone, collecting pains
A stone cries not of pains, a boulder complains not of ailments
A stone cries not of pains, not of pains

it's 3 am and i can't think straight, so if there's a better thread for this, do inform me

With all the listening to music I do in the car, I've definitely found a couple songs I think go well with SSSS

A few Nightwish songs would probably be The Islander, and The Eyes of Sharbat Gula, if you're going for music for the more mystical elements.
And Alpenglow goes well for the whole story methinks

I also listen to a bunch of Of Monsters and Men when writing ssss fic oddly enough

For the ambiance, I guessing the whole soundtrack of Banner Saga (https://youtu.be/53xt9f_Y0rs?list=PL1Uj0cNo6vn3fV7TP6cfwF-IyPGYEYWbe) is just downright awesome.
I just knew someone had to have beaten me to the punch on that one.  It really is perfect in a lot of ways, though.

I would say the soundtrack for "The Banner Saga" by austin wintory has some fitting music seeing how it's the viking-ish style and the lyrics are all in icelandic.

Edit: Seems like s everyone has said it already.......I just don't know how forums work yet......sigh

But there will be a sequel so maybe some new songs will be added.

Okay so someone sooner or later MUST do a choreography to Two Steps From Hell's Cannon in D Minor (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKmw9oS__MM).
I'm clearly very very far from being some kind of warrior partier viking, but even I have a hard time restraining myself from blasting this on full volume, grabbing all nearby persons and hallingdansing around the room in a very epic fashion. (despite knowing perfectly nothing of hallingdans save for its name and that it is some kind of nordic folk dance)

And all I know of hallingdans (besides people attempting hallingkast and landing on their backsides) is FRIKAR (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbuOdoan22M) who don't stay strictly traditional - people may know them as the dancers around Alexander Rybak in Fairytale - but yes I would love to see them do this  :-*

I'm really glad someone already brought up Finlandia. Sibelius is an incredible composer and Finlandia is one of the first pieces I thought of in regards to SSSS. There's also wonderful nordic folk songs (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwmnm6S9mz74gOn61OlDduTu4wBtstP6q) someone reccomend to me one time in the comments and I've been listening to those both for the purpose that they make me think of SSSS and they're just gorgeous songs on their own. The first one especially reminds me when Lalli enters the dream world because as soon as I got to those parts I was just like "dang, I need some pretty and mysterious sounding Finnish folk music because I can practically already hear it during those parts."

As for something that's a bit more modern and 'pop' a lot of songs by 'Of Monsters and Men' really makes me think of SSSS, especially this one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCHUw7ACS8o) even though the words are somewhat vague and at some parts downright nonsensical I still can't help but feel some SSSS imagery. Especially when it mentions the 'creatures of snow' and it especially makes me think of Lalli who I've always seen as almost feral in his personality.

A lot of songs by Leaves' Eyes have always made me think of SSSS. Specifically "New Found Land" (detailing a journey into the unknown):

and "Senses Capture" (which always makes me think of the dream realm):

Another bonus: the vocalist is Norwegian!

Radiohead always came to mind during the prologue, especially the Sweden scene.

This one really felt like a desolate, scary, snowy scene filled with the anxiety of a crumbling civilization.

Demon-Something: Yes! The prologue made me think of Radiohead as well.
Also, the entire comic reminds me of this Shearwater song:

I'm not sure why, but that song makes me think of a journey through lost worlds...
Also, this song:

This just seems to remind me of Stand Still, Stay Silent... even with the "Welcome Home" lyrics, which don't really fit.

I'm not sure why, but that song makeeven with the "Welcome Home" lyrics, which don't really fit.

I feel like the 'Welcome Home' lyrics do kinda work! In the sense that they're going back to lands that used to be occupied by people that nobody uninfected (that we know of) has really been to in a long time, so they're going back to places that used to be civilization and a lot of people's homes, and they might be the first uninfected humans there in a long time, so lyrically it still kind of works I think, maybe but I dunno if that really makes sense  :P But yeah I'd have to agree I feel like the sound of that song really fits SSSS too :3

Edit:Sorry that's probably super incoherent, I haven't really slept in three days except for little sporadic cat naps due to scrambling to finish a term paper on time :c

Hamradun's "Sneppan":

Is it cheating to use a song that's already about the black death? But I mean. It's about a woman who was the only survivor of her village, and after the sickness passed she was so wild and horrible or stricken that she didn't rejoin society in another village, rather those neighbours came and threw meat off a cliff down to her so she wouldn't starve. And sunset/night imagery is used all through the song in a way that transfers perfectly as a literal interpretation for SSSS...

So for SSSS one could think of such a story about the only immune person of a village, horrible enough lonely fate; but to me it kind of sounds like she trollified and they kept throwing her meat (or live mammals, who knows) anyway, as she stayed safely on the bottom of the cliff; she was enough herself that someone still wanted to take care of her or cling to her as the only thing left of that village... (However, according to the song, this one gets a happy ending: she will invite a final death when she's sufficiently overcome by the horribleness of her existence!)

Sooo I don't know if this is where this should go considering everyone else is talking about Very Serious musical accompaniment, but I have a passion for character themes and I don't know what to do with myself. And and these two songs happened to be right next to each other on the album thus making me very happy so I felt I had to put it somewhere.

So this one is kind of a stretch but today's update regarding disgruntled spirits hanging around our world for too long past their time made me think of this song, "Unfinished Business" which is a song about someone murdered by their lover but I suppose in death is still in love with their lover / murderer so their spirit still hangs around them to wait until it's their time too ? Mumford and Sons did a cover (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0gDXlYzy_A) of this song and that one's pretty decent too.

This rendition of the old Swedish folk song "Visa från Utanmyra" is definitely the track when Tuuri looks out the window from the train to Mora (http://www.sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=112). Utanmyra is a parish on Sollerön, which is where "Heart of Mora" is in the comic. So it's a song from Mora.

Hmm, good point. But I think there are a few things that are just very Lalli-ish:

Anyway, this is a song called "Sleepyhead" in which the first verse talks about fire and burning, guess what pairing this made me think of.

Not sure what thread to post it in, I wrote a Lalli-themed parody of the song 'Price tag' by Jessie J (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VsjFVlQ664).

Spoiler: For the song click here • show

With his hair and eyes silvery grey,
Under Emil’s coat he sleeps at day
When scouting comes first
And mage-ing comes second.
Just please let him make his small smile

Why is Lalli being so serious?
Acting so damn mysterious?
Got your shades on your eyes
And your boots thigh high
They’re cute but uncomfy all the time

Everybody mage to their left
Everybody mage to their right
Can you feel that
We’re going to scout tonight

It’s here all about Lalli, Lalli, Lalli
Emil needs you, Lalli, Lalli, Lalli
Wanna make the Silent World known
Forget about the flame-throw
Ain’t about the ch-changelings
Ain’t about the th-things he brings
Make the Silent World known,
Forget about the flame-throw

We need to take it back in time,
When the Illness did not yet prime,
And it wasn’t fight or fly and run for life
Am I the only one getting tired?

Why is everybody so obsessed?
Lalli, what’s your special interest?
When the flames slows down and books are found now
The Known World will be feeling alright

Everybody mage to their left
Everybody mage to their right
Can you feel that
We’re going to scout tonight

It’s here all about Lalli, Lalli, Lalli
Emil needs you, Lalli, Lalli, Lalli
Wanna make the Silent World known
Forget about the flame-throw
Ain’t about the ch-changelings
Ain’t about the th-things he brings
Make the Silent World known,
Forget about the flame-throw

Not sure what thread to post it in, I wrote a Lalli-themed parody of the song 'Price tag' by Jessie J (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VsjFVlQ664).

Spoiler: For the song click here • show

With his hair and eyes silvery grey,
Under Emil’s coat he sleeps at day
When scouting comes first
And mage-ing comes second.
Just please let him make his small smile

Why is Lalli being so serious?
Acting so damn mysterious?
Got your shades on your eyes
And your boots thigh high
They’re cute but uncomfy all the time

Everybody mage to their left
Everybody mage to their right
Can you feel that
We’re going to scout tonight

It’s here all about Lalli, Lalli, Lalli
Emil needs you, Lalli, Lalli, Lalli
Wanna make the Silent World known
Forget about the flame-throw
Ain’t about the ch-changelings
Ain’t about the th-things he brings
Make the Silent World known,
Forget about the flame-throw

We need to take it back in time,
When the Illness did not yet prime,
And it wasn’t fight or fly and run for life
Am I the only one getting tired?

Why is everybody so obsessed?
Lalli, what’s your special interest?
When the flames slows down and books are found now
The Known World will be feeling alright

Everybody mage to their left
Everybody mage to their right

I discovered today that not only is there a German folk/rock version of the Hooters' All You Zombies, but that they rewrote the lyrics to be about Valhalla! We've had songs for Emil and Lalli, I think this one is for Sigrun :D

/>

Because I am a nerd, I've attempted an English translation...

Spoiler: show

A cry of horns from far horizon,
The triumph of the Æsir's thrones,
Let us follow close, seeking out our reward...

Have no fear about our leaving,
Death and darkness we'll confound,
A hero's grave is not for grieving,
We will travel where the trumpets sound!

We'll meet again in far Valhalla,
We'll sing the songs and drink the wine!
Feast with the Gods in fair Valhalla,
We'll party 'till the end of time!

Lift your mugs to Odin's glory,
Quaff deep, cry out a drinking song,
He gathers up his host, the bravest of them all...

The feast awaits with laden trenchers,
A thousand barrels filled to burst,
At the end of all our ventures,
Come and join us when you've grown a thirst!

We'll meet again in far Valhalla,
We'll sing the songs and drink the wine!
Feast with the Gods in fair Valhalla,
We'll party 'till the end of time!

Well, I had a giant post of recommendations written out, but my computer decided to randomly go back a page, so.  I'll shorten it up for my own sake. Bizarre URLs on Last.fm are due to the accents and such in the artist names.

Obviously, anything Immediate Music/Globus, Two Steps from Hell, Gothic Storm, Groove Addicts, ICON Trailer Music, Really Slow Motion, all of it trailer/production tunes (and by majority, action, horror, and dramatic mood).

Triakel: Swedish folk group that plays almost entirely traditional tunes. Highly recommended if you're a fan of any folk involving "old-time" instruments (fiddle, accordion, etc.).

http://www.last.fm/music/Triakel (http://www.last.fm/music/Triakel)

Valravn: Danish band (split 2013) that merges Faroese/Danish/Norwegian folk melodies and styles into electronic dark pop. A bizarre, but very well-done mix of past and present. Started out playing mostly folk tunes but later wrote their own.

http://www.last.fm/music/Valravn (http://www.last.fm/music/Valravn)

Vàli: Dark ambient folk from Norway. Perfect for travel sequences in an apocalyptic world. Has two albums that I'm aware of, both excellent, featuring mostly guitar, cello, and flute.

http://www.last.fm/music/V%C3%A0li (http://www.last.fm/music/V%C3%A0li)

Árstíðir: Beautiful acoustic music that blends Icelandic folk with hymns and some modern elements. Some recent fame for their collaboration with Anneke van Giersbergen on a classical album (their tune Heyr himna smiður was featured all over the Internet after an impromptu a capella performance in a train station). Absolutely beautiful and laid-back. Highly recommend all of their albums and said collaboration record with Giersbergen.

http://www.last.fm/music/%C3%81rst%C3%AD%C3%B0ir (http://www.last.fm/music/%C3%81rst%C3%AD%C3%B0ir)

If anyone has a specific request ("I like so-and-so, what should I check out next") I have a lot of music in my collection and can probably help you find something, so feel free to ask!  More to come soon.

That tune from the first Fullmetal Alchemist anime has been getting into my head each time I read a new page of Chapter 14. In the anime itself, it plays once, in the emotional aftermath of a battle during which the protagonist had to kill a villain that was a "came back wrong" version or his mother and saw said villain's surrogate child run away crying. I feel the SSSS crew got a just about equal emotional load here.

Bumping in, haven't followed the thread, but as I was listening to D-songs for one of the fanfic-challenges I stumbled over Mikkel's theme song:

Less Than Jake - Devil in My DNA

And I just... Gosh blast it, it was so Mikkel I almost stopped in the middle of the road to look for the jaw I dropped!

Edit:
Let me add Sigrun's Theme Song as well:
OTTAWAN -  D.I.S.C.O

You might not agree for the first minute, but keep listening and it'll make sense!

I have found so much great music on this thread. I actually started a Spotify playlist for SSSS right as I started reading, so that I could feel "immersed" I suppose. It's pretty strongly inspired by this thread and Nordic folk music generally. You can see it here if you have Spotify (it's giaaaant be warned):

And so I can contribute- I just adore the band Frigg. They're a (mostly) Finnish (mostly) traditional strings group, and I think a lot of their music fits SSSS. They can do intense upbeat music like this:

Or more somber, thoughtful music like this:

While listening to music on YouTube to get me through the work day I realised that Ásgeir Trausti's Torrent seems to fit pretty well with SSSS. Maybe it's just because he's from Iceland and everything even faintly Nordic/Scandinavian makes me think of the comic, but check out the lyrics and see how well they seem to fit the expedition...

Gods of iron clashing, wind in battle through the night
Tears will fall, and strength is needed to overcome
This old house is full of leaks and mold on the walls
Dragons of the mind are lurking in the shadows

Torrents wash away
Everything
Raindrops flowing all around

Queen takes King, the pawns are falling onto the ground
Over you and me, there is rising the pink moon
Merciless though the wind takes hold with freezing cold
Come, my friend, sit with me, take council in the warmth

Torrents wash away
Everything
Raindrops flowing all around

I was just wondering what kind of music, if any, you guys listened to while reading the comic. I know I love to listen to specific kinds of music, or even specific songs while reading things, and I was curious if anyone else here did that too! And if you don't, then what kind of music do you think fits the comic thus far? You can post songs you think go along with specific chapters or pages.

The comments on today's chapter cover bought up the Cure, and got me thinking how a number of their songs are kind of applicable to SSSS...

A Forest is clearly about a scout being lured into the forests of Finland by a Hiisi
Spoiler: Lyrics • show
Come closer and see
See into the trees
Find the girl
If you can
Come closer and see
See into the dark
Just follow your eyes
Just follow your eyes

I hear her voice
Calling my name
The sound is deep
In the dark
I hear her voice
And start to run
Into the trees
Into the trees

Into the trees
Suddenly I stop
But I know it's too late
I'm lost in a forest
All alone
The girl was never there
It's always the same
I'm running towards nothing
Again and again and again and again

/>
Love Cats is a bit of fun about the Blessed Felines
/>
Lullaby is clearly about a troll or murder ghost!
Spoiler: Lyrics • show

On candy stripe legs the Spiderman comes
Softly through the shadow of the evening sun
Stealing past the windows of the blissfully dead
Looking for the victim shivering in bed
Searching out fear in the gathering gloom and
Suddenly
A movement in the corner of the room
And there is nothing I can do
When I realize with fright
That the Spiderman is having me for dinner tonight

Quietly he laughs and shaking his head
Creeps closer now
Closer to the foot of the bed
And softer than shadow and quicker than flies
His arms are all around me and his tongue in my eyes
Be still be calm be quiet now my precious boy
Don't struggle like that or I will only love you more
For it's much too late to get away or turn on the light
The Spiderman is having you for dinner tonight

And I feel like I'm being eaten
By a thousand million shivering furry holes
And I know that in the morning I will wake up
In the shivering cold

And the Spiderman is always hungry

Since I saw the new chapter cover, I've had this old Breeders song playing in my head. It's based on the Franklin expedition (http://http//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Franklin), which ended less well than I hope SSSS does, but IMO it's hard to beat for that "drudging through snow one step ahead of death" feel. (Sorry. But it's a Monday in November, I'll post some happy songs once the sun's back.)

Spoiler: Lyrics • show
With tables and chairs
And holy books for all
With knives and forks
And a thousand miles to go

But brother, I love you
900 to go
One down
900
One down
Twenty five to go

Bad dog is barking
Where snow meets the sea
900 to go
One down

900

When it's time
Brother
Bury me
In my clothes

I'm going to resubmit Aviators Oceans to Skies, because it's truly uncanny how good it fits for Tuuri's death

Just leaving footprints in the sand
I built with my own hands
The shores of my despair

I'd rise above the waves and storm
And find help to reform
The pattern that I'm in

Letting go of hopes divine
Giving in to dreams of mine
Spreading wings and taking flight

Could even be interpreted as a duet between Tuuri and Lalli

Not sure if this really suits SSSS or if I'm simply so obsessed as to cram everything I encounter into an SSSS mould, but every time I listen to this track I see a montage in my head of the crew driving into the ruins of Copenhagen, black speech on the radio, and then fights with ghosts and giants.

(And of Emil looking guilty/goofy right at the end ;D)

Someone might have mentioned them already but I feel like Sigur Ròs are perfect for SSSS. They're a great Icelandic post-rock band. https://open.spotify.com/artist/6UUrUCIZtQeOf8tC0WuzRy?si=6uFw1Z-gSfqB_VCxSDAeZA

I've been listening to a Finnish folk music compilation for a while now - it's really good study music, especially the first few songs. Here's the link:

/>
I believe all the songs are by the Finnish all-female band Niekku, which I found pretty cool  :)) the second song, "Vestmanviiki" makes me envision Ensi reciting a chant, so that's here:

/>
There's also "Kyyrän Matti" which sounds like a really cool, flying-over landscape, introduction-type music intro:

/>
Finally, cause this post is getting kinda heavy, the fourth track in the collection is "Kiljun Kisavirsi". Kinda more festival-sounding, but I thought it was cool:

I think, for the more dark or supernatural parts of the story, pieces from the Witcher 3 soundtrack could fit pretty well.

I've also seen people suggest Bloodborne, which I find fitting for Trolls n' the rest, for obvious reasons.

....In fact, if someone took the soundtracks of Bloodborne and Spirited Away and mushed them up together into one unholy amalgamation, I think they would get a score rather representative of the comic.

Also a suggestion that would be most fitting for ironic purposes: https://youtu.be/A3yCcXgbKrE (https://youtu.be/A3yCcXgbKrE)

And, of course, the song that has Onni in a nutshell

Spoiler: show
It's a jungle out there
Disorder and confusion everywhere
No one seems to care
Well I do
Hey, who's in charge here?

It's a jungle out there
Poison in the very air we breathe
Do you know what's in the water that you drink?
Well I do, and it's amazing
People think I'm crazy, 'cause I worry all the time
If you paid attention, you'd be worried too
You better pay attention
Or this world we love so much might just kill you
I could be wrong now, but I don't think so
'Cause there's a jungle out there
It's a jungle out there

It's a jungle out there
Violence and danger everywhere
It's brother against brother
Pouding on each other
Like they would make a mess

It's a jungle out there
It's a jungle here too
You got a tap right on your phone
A microphone and camera check on everything you do
Call it paranoia as the saying goes
Even paranoids have their meek
I'm not the one who's crazy, I'm not afraid of them
They're afraid of you and me
I could be wrong there, but I don't think so
'Cause it's a jungle out there
It's a jungle out there

It's a jungle out there
Even the cops are scared today
So if you see a uniform
Do exactly what they say
Or make a run for it
I'm only kidding with ya
'Cause it's a jungle out there
It's a jungle out there

For some reason, I kept thinking Loreena McKennitt. I have no idea why. >_<

I believe her music would fit quite nicely in some of the calmer, relaxed or spiritual moments of the comic!

Oh! I didn't realize this was a thread. "The One Who Stayed and the One Who Left" by Regina Spektor for Onni and Tuuri (and maybe Lalli for a few of the lyrics)!

Also, Guacamikkel, thanks for the Finnish folk music links, I've been hoping to find some Finnish music and haven't had sufficient time to look!
And, wow, Constantine, that's a very Onni song.

Gonna go ahead and say that I think SSSS would be perfect without any kind of music. The sounds of the wind and snow would really drive home the feeling of the silent world.

If I want to be in the SSSS-mood, I usually put on something mildly eerie. Indica is a good choice.

This one is fitting both in mood and theme.

This too

And also this. Actually it only comes to my realization that this title straight-out means Silent World. Okay, this is my ultimate SSSS-song now.

I have just been listening to an album by Jennifer Cutting and the Ocean Orchestra. All their stuff is good, but this one:'Ocean - Music for a Night Sea Voyage' seems especially fitting for SSSS.

I just responded to a very similar thread but am realising it was on the general discussion rather than the SSSS one.

So I created this playlist as a kind of magickal sounding mood-board of sound for me to draw my own comic to, but have found that it works really well as a soundtrack for when I'm re-reading my SSSS books.

It has a bit of folk music in it that is more Scottish sounding than Nordic, but I still think it works :)

Hello all!

I hope I'm doing this forum thing right! I can see this board might be a tad old, but I have some perfect music that I listen to while reading the comic, and I wanted to share. A couple of months ago, I finished the stellar videogame Rain World (which has some really unique worldbuilding, not too far off from SSSS). The soundtrack for that game was so fantastic I decided to look it up on Spotify, and well, it just fits perfectly for when I want to get in the Stand Still Stay Silent mood. Anyway, here's a link to the official album: https://open.spotify.com/album/2wNHtLdSEyYyyqAHnaQgRy?si=XKd3XvB7SS-RwkOIOSZAMA (https://open.spotify.com/album/2wNHtLdSEyYyyqAHnaQgRy?si=XKd3XvB7SS-RwkOIOSZAMA). Happy listening!

Hello OMCH!

You are doing it right, most of the threads have been started long ago but many have either stayed active ever since or been quiet at times and resurrected at need. So if you have something relevant to contribute, please do so!

We have an Introduction thread, swing by to say hello to other forumites :)

I found a song that I think could fit well for the next time :tuuri: Tuuri :tuuri: and and :onni: Onni :onni: will have to part (if Minna doesn't have a surprise in store for us.) It's called The Road by Faouzia (who is a great singer worth listening to.) The spotify link is https://open.spotify.com/track/1UID3iRWwHeoQJahHBBEWb and I posted the lyrics under a spoiler. This is definitely a more upbeat song, so it doesn't fit perfectly, but it reminded me of those two.

Spoiler: Lyrics • show

Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh
This ain't goodbye for real now
This ain't goodbye for real
Don't want to see you cry now
Don't want to see your tears
Do you remember all the, all of the things we did?
All of the crazy memories when we were only kids
Oh, let me soar
Oh, I want more
Time to hit the road now
Time to hit the road
Time to let it go now
Time to let it go
I'ma hit the road
I'ma hit the road
Taking all the chances
Taking all the falls
I'll keep all the memories
I'll break down the walls
Time to hit the road
Time to hit the road
Thinking of all the journeys
Thinking of what comes next
Thinking of brighter days that lie ahead
Oh, let me soar
Oh, I want more
Time to hit the road now
Time to hit the road
Time to let it go now
Time to let it go
I'ma hit the road
I'ma hit the road
Taking all the chances
Taking all the falls
I'll keep all the memories
I'll break down the walls
Time to hit the road
Time to hit the road
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Time to hit the road now
Time to hit the road
Time to let it go now
Time to let it go
I'ma hit the road
I'ma hit the road
Taking all the chances
Taking all the falls
I'll keep all the memories
I'll break down the walls
Time to hit the road
Time to hit the road

Title: Character & moodboard playlists
Post by: Feya on March 11, 2021, 05:04:26 PM
Let me revive this thread a little, I've been putting together a "moodboard playlist" on Spotify and while I have yet to got through all your suggestions and (add them), here's what I have:
I will try to update this list as I add more and, if possible, include a bit of info for each song with why I think it fits. Comments, linking song to a certain char and other suggestions are most welcome! Song picks by other users will be marked by an asterisk.

SSSS (general and/or unassigned):
Hozier – In The Woods Somewhere (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlfCfEfbO48) (The end of the old world.)
Poets of the Fall – Carnival of Rust (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKk1u5RMTn4) (Lyrics not very relevant but the whole grotesque theme of a rusted world reminds me of Silent World’s own overgrown ruins.)
Poets of the Fall – War (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0f_hewSrAH4) (Flashbacks of the end of the old world.)
Crystal Castles – Plague (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cx2lJIOTBjs) (The Rash.)
AURORA – The Seed (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Mc_OM5oNA8) (The destroyed/abandoned world analogy.)
AURORA – Churchyard (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00hbcQ8aUjU) (The ghost arc. Ghosts POV?)
Linkin Park – Iridescent (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCaXDOgQus0) (Ghost arc build-up and discoveries made up until the last stand around the car.)
Of Monsters and Men – Wolves Without Teeth (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAI5GSyXMjA) (The squad. Maybe too relationship thematic?)
Of Monsters and Men – King And Lionheart (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A76a_LNIYwE) (The squad. Standing up to the trouble, together, strong and brave.)
Spoiler: show
Potentially spoilerish stuff
Fall Out Boy – My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkIWmsP3c_s) (The events of old Saimaa, kade’s POV.)

* OTTO DIX - Уроды) (https://youtu.be/ltjjQZJrx3M) (Ghosts / Kade (and bears) POV.)

Tuuri:
Labrinth – Don’t Fence Me In (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hsa8itxNkV4) (The desire for the world outside.)
Spoiler: show
SO yeah I have whole set of song for Tuuri’s death and the moments (hours? days?) prior to it and after it… (I couldn’t sleep the night I read that part.)
Of Monsters and Men – I Of The Storm (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlCkafSYNJI) (The relization.)
Of Monsters and Men – Black Water (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AILsB9G8qEw) (It’s over, but you’re free.)
Of Monsters and Men – Your Bones (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXUloVYbchg) (Sort of Lalli’s parting/soul guiding theme.)

Lalli:
Woodkid - Run Boy Run (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmc21V-zBq0) (Not entirely sure how to assign this one yet. Has a bit of Lalli’s night scout vibe though.)
Lenny - Hell.o (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zG2TEQvNwJU) (Coping with hearing the voices of trolls.)
AURORA – Running With The Wolves (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06ht9MyJLT4) (Night scout theme? Perhaps a deeper meaning?)
Spoiler: show
Linkin Park – The Messenger (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ec2RlGgNIUs) (Grieving Tuuri and finding a way through his friendship/“bonding“ with Emil.)

Emil:
Hollywood Undead – City (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BU9BVKlgg40) (Swedish army cleansers theme.)
Ruben - Walls (Naked Edition) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QT7l8K3w7BU) (This song is my personal Lalli&Emil „bonding“ anthem. I originally had it listed for Lalli’s POV, but after carefully re-listenning to the beginning of the lyrics, I think it fits Emil way better.)
Fall Out Boy – Phoenix (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WgCzPKYDWI) (Emil’s fight theme, mid-Adventure 1 and later.)
Fall Out Boy – Immortals (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9PxOanFjxQ) (Joining the army.)
MOD SUN & Avril Lavigne – Flames (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=An0B0vvqcmY) (This one is bit of a more personal pick but somehow „I still burn for you“ somehow ticks with Emil for me, So I’m leaving it here, hehe.)

* Мельница - На север (https://youtu.be/FZAaQVAqlDU) (Norwegian army troll hunters theme 2.)

Mikkel:
Shawn James – Through the Valley (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXcKSLijghs) (I don’t know. Just listen to it. It ticks with Mikkel, somehow. I think it’s the part „But I said, ‚How can you save the world from itself?‘ “.)
* Imany – You Will Never Know (https://youtu.be/L4tF9EnbcxU) (Sweet but unspoken moments with Sigrun.)

1st song. It's just about chorus. FA-A-AYA-A-AH~
2. translation:
Spoiler: show
On a foreing shores -
Plexus of steel and sky.
In someone's eyes -
Plexus of pain and anger.
Hey-oh!
Swirls are cutted open with weaves of wings.
In howl of the winds
We heard the songs of the last Valkyries.

The sky is ripped open,
The waves are cutted open with a dragon's maw.
It's light or a wind
That's piercing ringing rigging now.
And the Moon -
I've been waiting for her, and loved her as my bride.
We've no time to sleep:
We're children of gods - our fait is clear.

In our eyes -
Sharp edges of eternal ice.
On our fangs -
Water smells with a fresh blood.
See the blades
Flashing through the moans of ripped night.
A farewell
To a life, that became shortet than a moment.1

Forever chase.
Our faith is to fly over the sea forever.
Pale norns
Are whispering: "Take North, you're wearing gray, you're a beasts!"
But when the first sun beam
Slides ower the cold water,
Meet us, our faitfull ones -
We're going home!

We're going home!
We're going home!
Meet your warriors, WODEN!
We're going home!
But on those shores -
Plexus of steel and sky.
In dead's eyes -
Plexus of pain and anger.
Steel and sky. Pain and anger.
Light or wind.
Take North, you're wearing gray, you're a beasts, take North

3. Translation:
Spoiler: show
The old shaman's got three hands,
Feathered wing springs from his back.
A wax candle flares up
Just from light breeze of his breath.
And sometimes he doesn't know,
Can't remember who he is,
When his sick wide-open soul
Overstrains itself and sings.

The old shaman's got three hands.
World all over's like dark hall.
On the shaky golden palms
Eyes are painted with blue spall.
He sees first pink colored rays
Of the dawn before sunrise,
Yet he seemed to be asleep,
Knowing nil about the skies.

The old shaman's got three hands,
Garden's lit by ruby rays,
From his breath it starts to flare,
Starts to flare up, starts to flare up,
Starts to flare up...

Candle starts to flare up...
Candle starts to flare up...

The old shaman's got...
The old shaman's got...
The old shaman's got...

The songs have been added. :) As for Mikkel and Sigrun, oh yes, the chemistry between the two is basically dripping. In my own choices I tried to avoid the ships a little (but I could not entirely, hah). Until a few years ago I was growing up as a hard-core shipper, so I fear I might be a little overly sensitive to sparks between chars and I don't wanna push my ships onto people. :D It's silly, I know.
But, hell yeah, I cannot just unsee the chemistry happening between Mikkel and Sigrun or Lalli and Emil. I try so hard but I can't. ;D

Anyways, it's late and I'm heading to bed now. Good night!

Good night.
I don't think Lalli and Emil are a slash material. There's also a thing called bromace, y'know?)
As for Sigrun/Mikkel... it's like Motoko/Batou, IYKWIM. Chemistry isn't really shown beacause both of them are way too discreet. And still you can see it (or just imagine it by being a hardcore shipper)))

Aaaand that's exactly what I'm talking about. (And also the reason why I prefer to not express my views on it. Ship clashes can be disastrous. I've seen way too many fandom wars start with "Your ship is wrong / nonexistent"...) If I want to, I see way too many hints, as small as they could be. That's why do not actively follow any of the pairings. :V But if I had to pick, these two pairs would be it. They can just as well be best buddies who trust each other. The kind of best buddies that would even help you hide a body. (Though they might be the reason why you have a body to hide in the first place.) *shrug*

Alas, none of the songs I picked myself is intended to imply any sort of relationship except friendship between the chars.

Ah, I love me some SSSS playlists. Here's some suggestions:
gone - ionna gika (creepy song, first spread of rash and the quiet that came after)
the curse - agnes obel (rash creeping in again, first mages are born)
bones - ms mr (souls getting lost)
wolf - first aid kit (not sure but it fits, methinks)
land of the bears - cecile corbel (exploring the silent world)
mountain sound - of monsters and men (the gang, just vibin')
bioluminescence of the night - james horner (instrumental)

Great picks! I will mark them down ad add them on the playlist as soon as possible. ^-^ Tbh I've had my eyes on Mountain Sound and Wolf as well, I must have forgotten to add them in the end. So thanks for the enlightment! ;D
Here's my own playlist from which I took the original set of songs: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0p47e7nlcT4RWWCj3egzph?si=i3RTV6ibRFKBthBBJS9-kw

I posted these links elsewhere, but figured they should go here, too! Beautiful music by a Finnish composer, incorporating birdsong recorded near the Arctic Circle in Finland. I think it goes well with any of the SSSS sequences showing wild places, especially the Finland settings of course.

Appropriately enough, the conductor is Hannu Lintu - his surname translates as "Bird"!  :D

For the music nerds, here's a version that shows the score, which is really interesting. The birdsong is hard to hear in this version, though, so to get the full effect I recommend listening to the other one first.

Thanks to Eurovision I discovered Icelandic musician Daði Freyr. With the band Daði og Gagnamagnið he performed in 2021 the song "10 years (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jaTRNImqnHM)", about his long-standing relationship with his wife.

In 2020, he would have performed with "Think about things (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HU7ocv3S2o)", about his just-born daughter.

But my fave song of his is "Hvað með það (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3Hx-Q1L89I)", the song he wrote for Songvakeppnin in 2017, the Icelandic national pre-rounds for Eurovision. The English version is called "Is this love (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=glzArwowVo0)".

There’s a Norwegian Artist Named AURORA, one of her songs “Winter bird” reminds me so much of Turri, though I almost cry everytime I listen to it

Having watched the series Unforgotten, I’ve been mesmerized by the song used for the opening titles, All We Do by Oh Wonder. It reminds me of SSSS, especially the Hotakainen story. It would also work well for a video of the prologue.

Well, a bit more Gry for you, I guess. Take any song by Gry or Arkona, and it will fit 4S.

I was just listening to this cover today and thinking it was very suitable for SSSS, or at least the beginning of the Rash (as in it's got an apocalypse-esque vibe)
