Title: Forum ranks
Post by: Fimbulvarg on January 20, 2015, 05:23:55 PM
Forum Ranks:

0 posts - Super-Newbie
1-99 posts - Newbie
100-249 posts - Safe-Zone Citizen
250-499 posts - Scout
500-999 posts - Ranger
1000+ posts - Ruler of a derelict Airport

Edit:You will find all ranks in the Important Information topic (https://ssssforum.com/index.php?topic=416.0). Until then you can add and discuss new ranks in here :)

And maybe:
1000-2499 - Ruler of a derelict Airport
2500+ - Admiral of a Sunken Ship
Considering your title and amount of posts.

We propose Troll tamer as 5000+ Title

Next step would be 10 000+
We would love to hear your suggestions!

As much as you like the concept of troll-taming, it does sound like a demotion after 'ruler of a derelict airport' and 'admiral of a sunken battleship' (at least IMO). That, and the title is kinda contrary to the premise that Minna has laid down for the SSSS world. What about putting troll-tamer as the 500-posts level and moving Ranger, Ruler and Admiral up one tier.

That still leaves us whith the question what should come after the admiral with the sunken ship. Any suggestions?

Well, this might not be a rank higher than the ship, but maybe put Rash-curer as well, since the Rash has no cure at the moment, so... Yeah.

What about conquerors of the abandoned cities of old?

I was thinking the other day that circumfering the globe in Y90 would be quite an achievement. Like Fernando Magellan, but with monsters. So ... "Traveller of the World/World Traveller/Wanderer of a Lost World/some variant thereof"?

I did some brainstorming.

We can either continue the <boss> of <destroyed thing> pattern, eg.:Or, take a detour into the MageChatRoom:
Wanderer of a Lost World

yes that is nice!
Does that leave space for yet another step?

Voyager of forgotten fantasies sounds cool as well, though maybe voyager of forgotten memories might be another option?

Rash-Curer is also great  :D.

Keeping in with progression, what about something like "Ruler of a Dead Country" or similar?

I'm not a fan of this idea, just because of the fact that if we implemented it, current rulers and admirals would lose their airports/ships, and I'm very protective of mine >_>

I like the <base> of <destroyed thing> pattern very much! My suggestion would be "Monarch of Castle Ruins". Plus then we could continue to pick out things to have... like castles...

I also like the Wanderer of a Lost World as an ultimate achievement (that is, if we're sticking solely to the physical realm).

We can't move tiers upwards without a consensus of course. I think you're exaggerating a bit though, you won't lose your airport/ship, you'll just have to strive to regain it. The problem is that it's hard to create ranks above those two without going megalomaniac.

And now that I think about it 'Troll Tamer' sounds like a suitable mod title. I guess 'Troll Slayer' is already in use, but maybe conscientious objectors want an option.

well the titles proposed seem worth an achievement. I for myself think it is more valid to gain the title rash-curer or Warden of a lost forest. I am neither interested in keeping an airport nor would I like to be an admiral of a sunken ship ;).

Fenris would have stayed a citizen for all his life if he could. Whatever titles will get into the list, there will always be someone somewhere who is not happy with that. Of course moving the Admiral's title up a bit might be possible and will be checked. Same might be possible for the airport.

also after 10k plus next step will be much higher to achieve. Some people think becoming a mage is the highest goal worth achieving, I bet other would rather rule the universe instead ;).

It took us a year or so for someone to reach the current max rank. I don't think it will take three years for the most zealous posters to get to 10k, but it won't happen in the foreseeable future.

Yes even according to my graph, with a posting rate of 15 or 16 it would still take more than 365 days for someone on this forum to reach 10,000 posts. I think it was something like 500 days.

*puts on glasses* According to my super advanced calculations a user with a posting rate of 15 would - in order to reach a post total of 10k - need 666,666 days, which as you can clearly surmise indicates that such a person is a devil worshipper. We must forbid that sort of thing.

If I could add my two cents, I think it would be much less complicated to just add two new ranks above Admiral, and it shouldn't be too terribly hard to decide on a title. Maybe we could add a poll with people's suggestions?

Careful Fimby, you wouldn't want to end up on my list of people to sacrifice. I mean. Having a posting rate this high doesn't come without a little shady dealing. Where do you think I got my hell demon cats?

I have collected all title suggestions so far. Who knows how long this board is going to run? I was at boards, where people have over 200k posts ;). So to have some more than just two steps might come in handy. Especially to have good titles still at the end of the line.

Eri said, that it is very easy to switch rank titles. Is there any more suggestions or do you want the collection neatly posted so you can create a poll from that?

maybe the three or four most wanted could be added. Like piney I'd prefer it not to switch titles and just add new ones, but that is a minor detail I think. It would be possible to add that to the poll as well, right?

As long as there are members who don't want to have their current titles moved up a tier we should try to avoid it.

Yes I think it would be anti-climactic to be an airport ruler and then work to become an airport ruler again, and only have the same title that you had before. It kinda takes the fun out of it if you've already had that promotion.

And yes poll is a good idea. We should get one of those up.

here is the collection of title suggestions:
Rash-Curer
Troll-tamer or Troll Slayer as a user title (good idea, but might end up confusing though)
Conquerer of an abandoned city
Conductor of a Vacant Subway
Verderer of a Forbidden Forest
Mayor of a Ghost Town
Traceur of Higher Planes
Voyager of Forgotten Fantasies/Memories
Dweller of Dreamscapes
Wanderer of a Lost World
Star of the Desolate Silver Screen
monarch of castle ruins
Spirit-Lynx
Captain Lynx-Paf

Did i forget to copy something?
Edit: sorry ana....

Yeah if we ever use Troll Slayer again it will have to be put in use much later to diffuse the association with moderators. Troll Tamer is a good one though.

As for the rest of the list I think you have everything.

Also, kex, I tried bumping a new rank into the old ones when the site was new, and it gave me a weird problem.  I forget what exactly, but I remember it took some time to work out.  We should try that on the test site first, to see if the better server we have now might help with that.

Poll is over and we could have:

Conqueror of an Abandoned City  30 (12.9%) => title for 5k

Wanderer of a Lost World  36 (15.5%) => title for 10k posts.

Of course you can oppose to that order and have them the other way round. But since some of you wanted to enlargen their ruled territory this order seems reasonable. If the first of you are close to hitting 10k we can have another poll ;).

Eri will add that titles if no one opposes.

The comic is based on Nordic mythology. I doubt anyone that religiously intolerant reads it except maybe for the pleasure of finding some new thing to be outraged about. But if we must go down that tiresome path of political correctness we could call them Departed Souls.

Possibly not my final suggestion, but right now I'm thinking along the lines of "See You in Valhalla" à la Sigrun, or maybe just "In Valhalla."
(Freya had her own halls, but dunno if we want to segregate in a gender-diverse platform such as this one?)

We often tend to use euphemisms that imply that the deceased is still alive but on a different plane (mine is no different, I guess). Given the implications that this status has in the SSSS universe, I'm a bit stuck in coming up with something truly appropriate.  midwestmutt's idea has strong merit in this regard.

We are making a rank title to mark the accounts of deceased members of the forum. If you have any suggestions please feel free to share them here.
In amateur radio, the deceased are called "silent key (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telegraph_key)", and the SSSSverse has the concept of the Silent World (which I wouldn't want to refer to verbatim, as it's not exactly suggesting peacefulness). Not quite sure what to combine it with, though ... "Silent Soul"? "Silent Kantele"? Some other "now silent" tool that fits the SSSS background without being outright connected to the religious beliefs?

I'm not sure, would a reference to the henki (https://sssscomic.fandom.com/wiki/Finnish_Soul_Structure#The_Three_Human_Souls)'s absence qualify as a religion-implying one?

The comic is based on Nordic mythology. I doubt anyone that religiously intolerant reads it [...].
IIRC the general forum contents get indexed by web search engines, hence, the ones who might come looking for things to remember the deceased by could be relatives etc. but not fellow Minnions ...

I quite like some of the suggestions already posed. To cast one more into the mix, perhaps some phrasing of "Onto the Next Adventure", though that might be too euphemistic. Traveller On The Bird's Path is very sweet and teared me up a little.

Midwestmutt, I didn't read "strong non-Finnish religious beliefs" as anti-Finnish beliefs, so much as being a person of a faith incompatible with that model. Someone who held a great personal belief in the Christian Heaven or the reincarnation of soul might not be best described as resting in Tuonela. I don't think it would be a source of outrage. Just a desire to not put someone in an ill-fitting box. In the end, a title can never capture the full scope of remembrance, but I think the more expansive titles come closest.

'Exploring What Happens Next' occurs to me, lifted from Neil Gaiman's Sandman.  "What happens next?," a newly deceased soul asks Death.  She smiles & says, "this is where you get to find out."
(The drawback - the idea of generic moving on concerns me, because quite frankly, we've had hundreds of members move on to something else!)

Individual profiles are not crawlable by search engines, nor is the personal board. I don't think it's a huge problem, they would only see it under posts and if they end up coming here to look for memories I think they would at least have some context as to what this site is for.

The poll is up! It will be open for a week.

I was a little late for voting but definitely for the one that got the most votes - gave me goosebumps and a lump in my chest.

Apologies for a belated post, I have set up the member group title that was most voted for: Traveller on the Bird's Path

Thank you all for your suggestions and votes.
