Ah! All of these cosplays look awesome!
I was wondering if I could get some advice. I recently got the idea to try and cosplay Tuuri, but this would be my first cosplay. Ever. I figured that I'll need to do custom work for a lot of the stuff, like her coat and cat face mask, but I don't really have that much experience fabricating things like that. So, do any of you have tips, general or otherwise, when it comes to cosplay and custom work?
Sorry for that ramble there >~<'

On a related note: if you were to sew an SSSS uniform, what kind of fabric would you use to get the right, winter-weather proof feel? Heavy, stuffed gabardine?
Not that the information would be of much help to me, I can't sew a single button.

I was thinking about garbadine, and it would look pretty great, but I also live in a Very Warm Climate and I'd prefer to avoid heatstroke... Maybe thicker cotton or muslin? I really have no idea. Somebody help ;__;

Take your time.
Focus.
Measure EVERYTHING at least twice.
Too large is a lot easier to fix than too small.
Don't be afraid to spend money on good-quality tools.
Do inexpensive things first, to hone your skills.
If you need to practice doing things that don't work with your outfit, use them for something else, or give them away.
Patterns are really useful for things like coats and don't be afraid to modify them! Don't use satin. It's cheap but it looks REALLY SHINY in a bad way in pictures. Also, don't half-finish things, and make sure that you do the basework and prep allllll the way so your cosplay won't fall apart while you're wearing it :0 And here it comes, one of the best ways to make things look professional... interfacingThank-you both for the tips! I'll keep them in mind!
Interfacing is wonderful. That's all I have to say here :0

All in all A+++ tutorial. My only complaint is that you'll pretty much be forced to hand-sew them, which takes time and patience I don't actually have, but machine sewing really isn't an option... :-\
Nice find! But for the actual uniform leather gloves, wouldn't you have to handsew them in, well, y'know, pleather?
I had a moment of really wanting to shake you by the collar right there. >:( Don't remind me of the pain... or better yet, do the good thing and kick me in the teeth before I can even start my next mistake.
EDIT: haha you can't save me anymore, I have the materials out already.
GUYS.
I found a really awesome tutorial and I have to share it with you in hopes of lots and lots of future SSSS-cosplaying!
GUYS.-I now want to make gloves??? What is this, I don't even cosplay, I don't even have the right anything to cosplay anyone in this comic. But damn it, I WANT TO MAKE GLOVES.

We all know how much the Y90 world loves their gloves, and some of them such as Reynir's "awake"-outfit, the uniform gloves and Lalli's "dream"-gloves would be near impossible to find as they are, they'd have to be made. I came across this tutorial (http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-Gloves/?ALLSTEPS) recently that explains step by step how to make patterns for gloves and how to sew them.
Btw my entire apologies if I'm just throwing around things everyone's seen already, I'm just feeling really happy about this pattern and how well it worked so I want to be noisy about it.
So I tried it out and made this glove, a second one is in the making.
Aaaand front. These gloves sit really well and since they're made to be exactly the size of my hands they're also really easy to wear (usually gloves are my worst enemy because I have stubby fingers and end up with annoying bags of fabric at the tip of each finger). I can f.ex. turn book pages with them on, tying shoe laces was easy enough too.

The style of hat you're looking for is something like a trapper hat or a an ushanka hat in Russian. They were usually fur-lined with flaps that went over the ears and secured under the chin. Lalli's is pointer, but you can find patterns for ushanka hats on google and tweak the basic shape from there. Hope that helps!
Don't feel bad I had to google "hat with ear flaps name" to remember the name. I knew it was a Russian military hat but the name went right out of my brain.Ushanka is what it's called in Russian, but Lalli's seems to be a very stylized version that's also, technically, attached to his coat. Traditionally the earflaps have little strings or laces at the bottom so you can tie them together at the top when you're not using them, but I din't think we've seen anything similar on Lalli's hat/hood
I need to get a Lalli hat now.
Psssst Ana, since you're already making one... two isn't that much more than one :D
Anyway, I may be in the process of making a Lalli costume. Maybe. We'll see how it goes, 'cause I've never done this before. I promise pictures if it turns out ok, though!Ooh, I'm planning on cosplaying Lalli too but I have zero experience of making costumes except for Halloween stuff. I'm so far avoiding as much sewing as possible (I'm making his coat by modifying an old body warmer) but when you work out how to do the hat, would it be possible to share the pattern you used? I understand if you don't want to though, I know how I'd feel about giving away all my hard workNot necessarily on me because *shudder* photographing myself.
Curry, you make an awesome Sigrun. If we ever want to stage a live re-enactment of SSSS, we know who to call!
...

I've seen pictures of the work in progress. I can vouch for the fact that it is going to look amazing. :)
Sure, I can share any patterns I use! I'm usually more of a just-go-for-it kind of person (which doesn't always work out with sewing :-\), but for stuff like the hat, I think I'm going to need some sort of baseline.Yay, thank you! I was going to try copying the pattern of a hat I already have because I know it already fits me but that's proving rather difficult because I like it too much to cut up :|
i'd ask you to slay me but you're actually holding a knife so i'm a little scared to tbhAhaha haha ha yeah I'm actually very nervous around knives so don't worry, I'm not thaaat canon B(
Aww yess pattern talk!
Me and my friends are going to use the pattern RaeSeddon posted (THANK YOU FOR ALERTING ME TO THAT YOU BEAUTIFUL PERSON) and just modify them a bit (http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/tri-color-coat-122012), adding trim and larger collars etc etc. Lalli hat and the accessories, however, have no plans (WING IT, FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT, GO)

I feel like I'm asking a stupid, obvious question but all you guys making "Lalli hats" are aware that it's a hood, right?

Looks like it'll work out great! If only you could hide the braid somehow, you could almost have a two-in-one wig. ;D
I was thinking maybe you could have a two in one wig. You could have a medium-length Sigrun wig and then turn it into a Reynir wig with extensions like in this tutorial (http://www.instructables.com/id/Ridiculously-Long-Hair/). Just something to consider ;)
Ahaha that would be convenient, but their bangs and styles are pretty different so it would probably take a heat resistant wig, a hair straightener, and lots and lots of stonecrop in between each switch @_@ I spent HOURS on my sigrun so I know I wouldn't switch them between but then again it's a really thick wig so?? Martti's looks pretty thin , so it could work.

What a pretty color for Sigrun! Although wow you would also be such a cute Reynir!!thanks, but it is more like the colour if the camera, the wig is completely red, the camera makes it a bit slightly orangish, but still I find the colour good C:
well, yeah, that is one reason I am not planning to do both with same wig, I will be happy if I can style this one for Sigrun only!
it is, if I cut both, it will be more I guess, I need to get a proper cut, I cut only two bangs which was not part of the braid, and it already a lot and enough for the style, so I dunno what I will do with the braided part yet xD I need to get something to put it on and do the proper cut first, then styling, honestly I have no such thing like those warm thing you curl hair with.... (how it is called???) so I still try to do it first only with some spray... if not working, I will try to get one..... but I dunno if the wig can take the heat.... (I could test on the cut part lol)
Huehue I feel the need and I indulged myself and I do not regret it at all. I highly recommend, 10/10
ALSO guys do you realize that I have closet cosplayed 5/6 of the main cast? Because I feel like that is an important thing to be stated. Because I've done it and I shall be Mikkel at some point too just for s***s and giggles.
Any thoughts? I would also have to figure out some way to approximate the floofy hair around his face, but color is my biggest concern at the moment.
I can see that wigs seem to be the most popular route, but I'm sort of worried about fitting aforementioned epic-length hair under one. Then again, I'm also worried about how arduous a process it would be to dye so much hair.

Does anyone know any good websites/stores to buy wigs at?
Does anyone know any good websites/stores to buy wigs at?
Arda wigs (http://arda-wigs.com/) is the absolute best wig store I have ever bought from and they are having a GIANT sale right now :D They have very thick-haired wigs with highly heat-resistant fibers and lots of styles and colors! My Sigrun is an Arda wig, actually. It's a Pippin in wine red if I remember correctly. Thanks! :)
Epic Cosplay (http://epiccosplay.com/) is another fine wig source, with very silky wigs also in a variety of lengths and colors. They aren't as thick, however, so not the best if you need hardcore anime hair styling.
You'll need to style pretty much anything you buy if you want it to be canon, and arda has lots of tutorials if you check out their website.

I wish I had a better version, but this will do: a sneak peek at the Flemeth cosplay. I still tweaked it a little after taking this photo (taking a photo of your cosplay is the best way of seeing what still needs fixing), tightened the vambraces, added some structure to the collar and re-shaped the front of the loincloth so that it won't lie over the armour. The armour takes a while to put on and I might need an assistant to help me, but once on it's surprisingly mobile! I was pleasantly surprised, one of my nightmares was that I couldn't move in it properly but I could probably skip rope in it if fancy took me that way.
Now to just... enjoy this beer I quite feel like I deserve. :P

How did you make the little horns on the wig? and and and WHATS THE ARMOR MADE OF I JUST
Wowzers... That looks pretty much exactly like the albino devil picture you sent me weeks ago! I can see why you've been cursing rivets lately. It looks a bit drafty.
I wish I had your skills. Heck, even half of them would make me feel like an expert crafter.
*cherishes hope of seeing Flemeth skipping rope*
WOW that is amazing and very elaborate and WOW
I can make a foam craft tutorial once I get back from Sweden, it's much easier than might seem at first glance, all you need is a little bit of inner engineer to think of how the parts go together. The outcome is soft, convincingly thick looking, light and can even take some amount of abuse before any damage occurs.
As for inner engineering: you are talking to the kind of person who starts seething trying to figure out IKEA manuals.
Wait. You actually read the manuals?
Nice to meet you Tony Stark how's the business.
Amy: Shall I run and get the manual?
The Doctor: I threw it in a supernova.
Amy: You threw the manual in a supernova? Why?
The Doctor: Because I disagreed with it!
I could probably skip rope in it if fancy took me that way.I know that that armor isn't actually metal, but ...
Wait. You actually read the manuals?
Getting ready for prejudging, where the judges get a close look at the cosplays. Feeling a little bit nervous, or possibly just hungry. The other contestants all look brilliant and it's fun to hang out with them in the sovsal as we're all getting ready, they're all awesome people and the group spirit is great!
(Forumites met so far: 1!)
Who?
Conventions sound like a lot of fun actually, even the walking till sore part.
Who?Conventions are AMAZING. You don't even realize how exhausted you are because you're just surrounded by awesome people and awesome stuff and it's super easy to walk up to a total stranger and compliment them!

Today's mostly free time and I'm planning to spend it in Reynir cosplay, let's see if I can find more SSSS fans! :D Also hoping for cold weather please, this costume is just wool on wool. :P
*Looks at weather forecast for Linköping* .... Just.... Try to be brave alright!
But is there enough of this kind of cosplay? 'Cause Jane Austen is my jam.No, there is never enough of this kind of cosplay ^_^ More is always better! Gosh this looks so fun and you look so comfortable in those clothes, just like you've been doing a lil bit of time travelling (except for the lack of gloves and fan! What kind of lady goes out without those :P!)
The local public library held a Jane Austen festival this evening; a lot of the local historic costumer community showed up. Among them, yours truly. Regrettably, I forgot my gloves and fan.... shame on me.
The pictures are in that odd format because they were taken with an app emulating an old-fashioned photo booth.
oh hey the nordic cosplay championship is in a few hours and it will be possible to watch here i think?? (http://www.svt.se/cosplay/svt-sander-de-nordiska-masterskapen-i-cosplay)
Looks like I'll be glued to the screen tonight. How long do you reckon it lasts?Until a single cosplayer emerges victorious, of course! Muahahahaha!!

We have alrwady come up for a term for extreme cowboy walk - game character strut. Game designers apparently ignore how those clothes would be to wear...
Totally unlike Minna, whose costume designs are designed to be flexible, roomy, easily fittable and 100 % comfortable - except in temperatures exceeding 5 degrees.
But seriously, I want someone to cosplay Sigrun so I can hear the tale of how they made the x-belts sit tightly.

Both of these things.yes!! Ironically enough, a finnish one...
Laufey's our Icelander, right?
I'm not very knowledgeable about cosplay, but that Thorinn cosplay seems like it will be immensely though to beat. Dat armour.
laufey will beat it!

I rewound the cosplay livestream and am watching it from the beginning (grateful I can fast-forward, tbh).I think it's probably because neither Icelandic nor Finnish is mutually intelligible with the others, and most people there speak English.
I'm curious -- why are the announcers speaking English? Isn't the event in Sweden, and the participants all from the Nordic countries? And aren't most of the Scandinavian languages mutually intelligible? (Except Finnish, of course... and insert obligatory Danish-mumble joke.)
I'm personally grateful they're speaking my language, but I wonder if this is English imperialism in action... :-[

The werewolf guy explained the rules about "assistants" but... I didn't understand...
ALSO, once the dust settles, is everyone OK with moving this topic into the Cosplay thread? I'd like to be findable by future readers -- if you don't mind, Laufey.maaaaybe it's time to get a cosplay thread on the general board?
I'm open to that, especially since my only cosplay entry was distinctly non-SSSS. ::)
Yes, I meant what I said when I said they win at being comfortable and easily wearable. They were clearly made with functionality and durability in mind, despite the lack of pouches and so forth. Cosplay conventions tend to be held in the summer months though so they might get very hot - if you actually design them to retain the winter functionality that is.
Pffffft.

LAUFEY YOU WERE AMAZING OH MY GOD <33 THAT SONG WAS GREAT
everything was great!
I actually liked your costume better than that girl from... was it Destiny? But yeah, everyone was good!
No disrespect to the other cosplayers, but would someone kindly tell me the video time hack at which Our Laufey appears? :D Time management and all that. ::)
EDIT: Enquiring Eich wants to know, too!
;D Whee, thanks! ;D
Laufey, you were wonderful!! :D
And never deprecate your singing in my (actual or virtual) presence again. >:( So there. 8)
Yes very much agreed
Ooh, I might as well throw these in. I haven't done much official cosplay because, well... I can't sew very well and I'm usually poor. BUT I love doing like, closet-cosplays... One day maybe when I have time I'd love to cosplay for real, but yeah... So... here's some stuff. Most of these are like, CELLPHONE PICTURES, my apologies.Spoiler: "Cecily" from Welcome to Night Vale show
The whole forum: thank you so much guys!!! One of the best parts of this whole thing was you all backing me up, I was really, really happy to come back to this thread, most best ending for the awesomest competition!
Solovei, or anyone really;
"Fem!Cecil"? I know it's not a spreadsheet reference to a value on a different worksheet; is it" Cecil, as played by s female?"
Finally on our way home, but Stockholm first! The con was great fun and I hope I managed to convince the Thorin cosplayer to read ssss and cosplay Sigrun... she'd be so perfect. Norwegian - check. Tall - check. Very Sigrun-esque personality - check. I'll be doing a Sigrun cosplay myself as my next project, but there can never be too many Sigruns.
I found out you can get candy-flavour sparkling water in Sweden. Amazed, guys, I'm amazed!
What is the difference between candy flavoured sparkling water and just regular soda?
Less aggressive sweetening & carbonation, plus no coloring, maybe?
Don't even ask, of course that'll be Sigrun. ;D
*can't wait for Sigrun cosplay*
I have a thing. It's not a cosplay per say, but it could easily become part of one if I get bored one daywhich is likely. Right now it's just a hat, from a certain other webcomic (http://satwcomic.com/) that I'm sure many of you are familiar with.Spoiler: show

Trinka, the 60's girl costume is SO BEAUTIFUL! I can't stop looking at it!Thank you, I really enjoyed wearing it around, I got lots of compliments. Plus it was surprisingly comfy and I could justify doing lame 60s dances whenever i wanted to, which was fun :D
Hey all, I'm just gonna leave some pictures here for your enjoyment. Or not. You choose :) They are in reverse chronological order, from most recent to oldest, and some of them aren't TECHNICALLY cosplay, but involves me dressing up in period costumes, so what the heck, they're gonna live here now.
My first official cosplay ever was this year, at Wondercon. I can agree with all the others on this thread: cons are wonderful, awesome, nerd-tastic fun for all! You should definitely try to make it to one at least once in your life; it's as experience! I went as Catwoman, and my sister Alethryia went as Black Canary, both DC comics charactersSpoiler: show
This gettup is for a 70s party that I went to. Going for an early 70s-chic look here, none of that disco nonsense ;) Bought a vintage dress and paired it with accessories from my collection (plus my mom helped me learn how to macrame the hat-band, which was pretty cool!)Spoiler: show

This is waaaaay back in 2011, when I went to school for Halloween as Professor Chaos, from the TV show South Park. The premise is that the character is a regular kid who sometimes dons the persona of "Professor Chaos" when he want's to rebel against his restrictive parents and society. All lighthearted fun, plus he makes his own costume out of tinfoil, and little matching costumes for his "minions" (which are just hamsters).Spoiler: show
These are all really good! I really like the DC comics universe so the Catwoman/Selina Kyle and Black Canary costumes are obvious favourites. Did you sew the actual suit yourself or is it prefabricated? I don't know much about sewing but I get the impression that sewing leather and leather imitations is somewhat tricky.
I though the Cindy Lauper one was a Culture-Club cosplay :P

Cosplay 1 (http://breidholt-kaino.blogspot.com/2015/07/narcon-2015-cosplay-part-1.html): cosplays I recognized.
Cosplay 2 (http://breidholt-kaino.blogspot.com/2015/07/narcon-2015-cosplay-part-2.html): cosplays that I didn't recognize but were too cool to not photograph.
Cosplay 3 (http://breidholt-kaino.blogspot.com/2015/07/narcon-cosplay-part-3.html): my biggest personal weaknesses, cosplay-wise.
Awesome cosplays up ahead, just saying! Närcon is a great opportunity for cosplay-hunting. :3
Gwenno: I may or may not be a super cheap person when it comes to materials, if there's a non-expensive option I'll go for it! :D Besides Dragon Age 2 features some really, REALLY thick armour pieces so I felt worbla or some similar material just would not look clunky enough. A friend suggested camping mattresses, I thought of it for a moment and got myself two cheapo 6mm ones and well, they were perfect.
Astrid HTTYD - definitely my favourite, debatably best cosplay. I had no idea who to cosplay for Geek Bop (a dance organised by the sci-fi/fantasy/anime/gaming societies at my uni and the reason for most of the above) and was stressing a bit when my mum just tells be to go as Astrid because she'd basically me anyway and I was like :o because it was just such an obvious choice once it was pointed out...[/spoiler]Spoiler: show

And that Furiosa is very interesting. An aquaintance mentioned she's in the process of making a Furiosa costume. I kind of want to make a Mad Max: Fury Road costume as well.
The woman in the first picture in part two is Juvia Loxar. The guys with the orange pants and a mask are from Borderlands.I think the knight with the antlered helmet is meant to be Robert Baratheon.
If I had to guts to shave my head I'd go for Furiosa as well but I'm a wimp so... no.
Eh, I remember your introduction page on NCC said something about Askeladd from Vinland Saga being one of your projects. You won't make a convincing Askeladd without a haircut and a little bit of trimming near the temples ;)
But yes, no. A total shave is a no-go for me too.
All Furiosa is good Furiosa, and Fury Road cosplays in general make the world a better place. If I had to guts to shave my head I'd go for Furiosa as well but I'm a wimp so... no. Thank you for the help, I added the info to the post (figures, I never followed Fairy Tail so I know Bob-all about it, not recognizing the Baratheon one is a bit more embarrassing :D )!You could go as Valkyrie! In principle a little bit like the Bride Story costume.
Dammit Fimby XD you do NOT want to know where my brain went with that... >_>

Unlos: a bald cap isn't a bad idea at all though! The only problem is that both Furiosa and Askeladden have a little bit of hair which is near impossible to fake... but for a fully bald character a bald cap would work well. I had a front row seat so to speak when we were getting ready for the competition and Thorin's assistant put on hers. Time consuming and needs pretty good make-up skills, but the end result is awesome!
But Askeladden, with short hair? I'm obviously missing something, because when I hear that name I immediately think of this slightly creepy doll:

It's fiiinally finished - well, almost. The wig is so heavy that the curls I tried to style in front gave up and collapsed almost immediately, stronger hairspray and curlers will happen before Närcon begins.Get some of the freezer gel packs that are used on sprained ankles and knees. Freeze and tuck them into your waistband at the small of your back. Also if you can secure them then you can place them over your collarbones and get the blood cooled before it enters your head. Woop! Just thought to post some actual photos of the cosplay so excuse the double-posting.
I forgot to ask, did anyone recognize your Reynir cosplay?
Hey. I was thinking about trying to do a cosplay for Sigrun, but I have no idea wher to start. I have never cosplayed before. I don't even know how to use a sewing machiene. Does anyone know of any good resources to help me get started? Thanks ^_^

Does anyone know of any good resources to help me get started? Thanks ^_^Wigs are a good place to start, as KS already said! Arda, Lucaille, Wig is Fashion, and Epic Cosplay are my favorites, although honestly, if it's your first cosplay I would def go with Arda! They have the most options for styles and colors in high quality wigs.

first try to figure out how to use the sewing machine or sewing by hands, or you can't go anywhere.
Does anyone have any suggestions on white hair dye/spray?get a wig or dye it to really bright blonde then you can add some grey hairdye for the greyish look, but if you use hairdry like that, it can't be undone

If you want a character-specific recommendation, me and my pal freddiethefantastic are good at finding high-quality, pretty wigs from a variety of (safe! not-sketchy!) stores and we will gladly help with any questions you need :0
Found this lovely Fabric Guide chart on Facebook. When you are cosplaying and trying to recreate a look this can be invaluable in choosing the right fabric.

Also, to Sunflower: should we just move all the other similar posts from the cosplay thread to this one? I've already talked to Freddie and they don't mind
Hi. I'm not exactly sunflower, but I think I can help. You guys can move your posts, and if you need me to move some stuff over and everyone's cool with it, just let me know :)
Alright, fantastic!

Okay, so this isn't a cosplay-specific question, but it sure would help because I have a lot of trouble getting it to work. Does anyone know any good armhole sewing tutorials? How to shape, how to hem, how to attach sleeves, etc. There must be an easier way than what I'm doing now T-TI've found this one to be pretty useful! TOOT TOOT
So I've been pondering what to go as for Halloween this year, because I hadn't been inspired by anything yet. Then whilst watching one of my most beloved Ghibli movies again with some friends this weekend for the first time in years, it hit me:OMG, how are you that cute?? HOW.
"Whoa, I should totally dress up like Kiki!"
It just made sense, my hair is now dark dark brown, it's a relatively easy costume, and a comfortable one to wear all day!
So today I tried testing out my hair to see how it would work with stuff I had lying around the house. (also the little pink ovals on her cheeks *psst, I used lipstick*)
Conclusion: it's a little too long at the moment, but by taking the bottom portion and pinning it up, I can hide it under my top layers and a red ribbon in my hair! Also going to play with my bangs a little more, but I think it looks pretty good!

All the cosplays look great! I kinda need tips for making costumes, so does anyone have tips? (If it helps, Im trying a Homestuck cosplay)Aaaah, I have lots of cosplay advice for homestuck (did it for many years), but we have this thread (https://ssssforum.com/index.php?topic=610.0) for cosplay related questions :0 If you have any specific things that you'd like me to give advice on, just reply there and I'll tell you anything I know (๑╹ڡ╹๑)
Ooooh these are all really good! :O
Um so, Curry told me to come here for some help with my cosplay.
So I am going to a con in the spring, and I will be doing a Homestuck cosplay. I want to either do Dave, or Karkat. I was thinking Dave for the con, since I will be Karkat for Halloween. So um, I would like some recommendations for how to make a Dave cosplay? I want to do God teir. I know I can just do a simple Dave cosplay and get a shirt from Whatpumpkin, but I want to do God Teir, and I don't know if they have God teir stuff. Thanks!
Okay so.
I need cosplay help I guess?
Hi, I'm Nimphy. And this shall be the first time I cosplay.
Yay!
So for the first time, ofc, I wanted to do something important but not too complicated. SSSS was an obvious choice, and it seems that the only non-complicated character is Reynir!
Because he's not very complicated, yes? Yes?
So thanks to this thread I found tutorials for gloves and stuff, BUT... Can anyone give tips on the tunic/dress thingy? I am at a complete loss. Also, what materials might be good for a con in early November?
Which particular Reynir are you considering, dreamworld Reynir or sheperd Reynir?
Aha, I cosplayed normal Dave, and I sewed my friend's cosplay for God Tier! They don't have the full godtier pajamas/outfit, but it's not too difficult to sew, especially if you use a proper pattern for it instead of winging it like I did >_> As for the shirt, it's not hard to either paint the symbol on (I don't advise doing this because it's often messier-looking), buy it online (there are lots of stores selling homestuck merch, including the shirts for Godtiers), or use iron-on paper to get the symbol on. This is what I used to use and it does work pretty well, although it fades in the wash very quickly (I had to recolor my Roxy shirt with Sharpie markers before each time I wore it). The pants and shirt are very easily bought. They're not rare/difficult colors and you can probably find them in local stores (thrift stores are great, just wash what you buy before wearing) or you could buy white clothing and dye it for Maximum Color Matching, but that's ridiculously extra and if it doesn't match up exactly that's entirely okay ;)Thanks so much! This really helped :) I actually don't need a wig if I keep my haircut! (I have perfect Dave hair if I style it) except it is brown, but I don't need to be completely canon. So much cosplay ing will be done! Thanks, Curry! <>
The shoes? Get something comfortable. You're on your feet all day at cons and it's okay to sacrifice a little bit of canonness for your own comfort and anybody who judges you for wearing something slightly off official for the sake of your back is a Dumb and you should fight them[citation needed].
Wig! I love wigs! I used a short Arda (it was a while ago and I can't remember the style) in honey blonde, but you can go anywhere on the blonde spectrum (including whites and silvers, because people have lots of different headcanons)! Pick what looks good with your skin tone and what you like. There's no canon at all. Freddie and I have yelled about wig stores many times before, so just scroll back a bit in this thread to find some Nice Quality Recommendations for stores we've both used ourselves/heard consistently amazing things about.
Back to the cape! A thicker material stands out more, but if you want to make it REALLY swanky, get some iron-on interfacing and iron it on for a Really Fancy Stiff(er) Cape. It will look very canon but it might not move as well. Your choice!
OKAY YEP THERE'S MY SPIEL! i hope that helped B^)
Thanks so much! This really helped :) I actually don't need a wig if I keep my haircut! (I have perfect Dave hair if I style it) except it is brown, but I don't need to be completely canon. So much cosplay ing will be done! Thanks, Curry! <>
Oh just so you know curry
I have an awesome tunic thing that is perfect for doing cosplays of God Teirs
It's John's color, but the Rouge design, and it's super cool I love it
Okay so.

(http://i.imgur.com/QwhxlDq.jpg)This one is my favorite :) Okay, we don't see a lot of the cosplay and character
So today we did a little photoshoot at Grótta, Seltjarnarnes. We got there at the low tide so we could easily cross to the island and it just... has so awesome photoshoot locations for a webcomic as wonderfully gloomy as Judecca (http://judecca.co.uk/) can be (at worst at least, although arguably I'm cosplaying Nayko at her happiest moment orange dress). I'm putting the photos under a spoiler cut because the character I'm cosplaying, Nayko, has large scars on the sides of her mouth and I'm ok-ish at faking scars with make-up.Spoiler: show

Dem be pretty convincing scars. Is it the kind of makeup that contracts the skin to make a scarring effect or is it adhesive latex?
(http://i.imgur.com/R2voIHC.jpg)aaa the cosplay and the weather is absolutely lovely, but the art in this wall is REALLY COOL? reminds me of - hang on this isn't the picture thread, welp, i'll nyoom over to there
Rigid collodion, it's super handy for making convincing scars as long as they don't have to be deep (for some people it works really well but for some reason I can only achieve a superficial effect). For better gore effect I'd go for latex, but since Nayko's scars seem to be rather shallow the scarring liquid will do.
I think part of the reason why the scars look so dramatic on Joker cosplayers (for instance) is the colour of the makeup they apply. Your scars look like they have had at least a year to heal. If you look at pictures of people with actual Glasgow smiles (Tommy Flanagan for instance) or fencing scars you'll notice that the scars don't actually look that dramatic in most cases.
Any advice on where to buy sequins, and how to attach them, and how far apart they can be while still providing distinct lines? The Marching Abominable colors are red, yellow, and black, so I think I can make a suitable basic performance outfit by adding yellow sequins to a red shirt (no, no phaser burns) and black pants I already have. :D
Are there any easy sequin attachment methods that are also fairly durable? I'm a lazy cuss, I'll confess upfront! ;) Or alternatives to sequins, cause neither the Professora nor I actually sew beyond buttons and basic repairs. Most of my sewing was unit patches for JROTC in high school...in the 70s. ::)
Or ideas for band-like costumes that aren't actually double-lined to fake something like a breast plate. We're Abominable, not Spit 'n' Polish! :D

I have absolutely no experience sewing sequins in amounts greater than 1, but they're sometimes sold in these strands (https://www.google.com/search?q=sequin+strands&es_sm=93&biw=1192&bih=726&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAmoVChMIq5CegdGTyAIVDDY-Ch1-pwSc) which might be helpful for what you're trying to do.
Well, you could try fabric puffy paint. I don't know how durable it is when you want it to stay on, but I've had an impossible time trying to get it off of something that I didn't want it on ::). And it would take much less time than sewing sequins.
I'm not sure if this counts entirely as cosplay, but it could be used for that, so I'm going with it. After over two years of work, I finally finished my 4th Doctor scarf. The picture doesn't do it justice, because I couldn't find anyone to model it for me. But here it is!

Don't give up! It took me years to figure it out and be able to crochet easily, and I had the wonderful help of my grandma, who is a crochet master. If you find a project that you really want to do, it'll help motivate you to improve and learn. I'd suggest signing up over at Ravelry (http://www.ravelry.com/), they've got a ton of projects of all sizes and skill levels, and lots of people to ask for help if you're stuck.
I can second this! Crocheting is not that hard ;)Hello I'm left-handed and I had needed 3 tries (at 14, 19 and 25 years) to learn how to knit ::) I'm on a

I guess there's only one way to solve this...

Word of God below.
From the comic, page 225:
Solokov
What are their clothes made out of? Natural fiber cloth like cotton and wool, or synthetics like polyester and the like? Or is it a blend?
Also, those black panels on Lalli's hood? Are they solid or could a person see through them?
minnasundberg
Natural materials mostly, the only things that are synthetic are re-used old-world materials. I'm envisioning their outer gear to be some sort of soft, matt bleached leather. And the dark parts are all some sort of leather too. (I'm not an expert on clothing materials so I'm not sure they're realistic at all, that's just how I'm envisioning them. ;S)
And my turn to ask for help. I am preparing Lalli cosplay, and I've got a couple of questions about it.
1. Hair. I was sure Lalli's hair colour is ash blond, and I found the wig I thought was proper. Here it is:
But I looked through SSSS Cosplay thread, and the wigs I saw were white or silver. So I'm in doubt. Any ideas about that?
Thank you, Curry!
And does anyone have Lalli's hood sewing pattern? Ire-readlooked the comic through, and it seems a little bit different in various chapters...
Is it OK if I just PM her?
So I realize Cosplay is usually based on an already created character, but what I was kinda thinking about developing my own imagined character for the SSSS world. Do you guys follow? It'd kinda be more like renaissance fair, because I'd be creating my personal fictional character. On that note, what do you guys think SSSS fashions are? I would guess each of the countries all have a different vibe.*waves* Hello! Welcome to the forum!

a new cosplay has happened and we had a photoshoot yesterday at Elliðaárdalur! Hyper Light Drifter is an amazing game, I've never rage quit as hard and as often in my life! Yet it's so beautiful and fun to play, holy heck. Anyway without further ado, here's Drifter (prepare for So Much lens flare in the spoiler cut).Spoiler: show
That character startled me! The design on his helmet is the logo of a major Australian bank.
I don't know the game and the character, but your cosplay is great =)
Fabulous as always, my dear Lauf. < 3
...after you've been part of the jury... will you compete again next year? =)
AHAHAHAHAHHHH THIS IS BRILLIANT. I had to look it up and yes, it's really similar to the logo! :'D
Thank you and thank yuu! <3

On the Chloe cosplay, is that a tattoo sleeve or did you paint that?!My friend (animator by education, so that man knows how to draw things) painted it on my hand using gouache in a few hours.
My friend (animator by education, so that man knows how to draw things) painted it on my hand using gouache in a few hours.Daaang. That's really impressive. I've spent half a day just trying to paint my face in a certain pattern, but that didn't even hold a candle to those tattoos.
So...I need some advice.
After nearly 20 years I've stepped onto a masquarde stage for the first time. It was fun, I had a riot and the crowd took my costume and presentation just the way I wanted. I was never going to win anything, but I left the show with people asking me eagerly what i was going to do next. That was awsome. So I decided to look around and reach out...only to realize the landscape has changed and I'm not sure I have anyone to reach out to. So my conumdrum is, outside of ssss, I do my own thing, and I'm not sure that is okay any longer.
My costume for the masquarde was a red duct tape overdress, and underdress of american tax papers (seriously I ordered booklets directly from the IRS and used that). I was 'the auditor' and threated to audit the judges. Now I'm considering what I'm going to do next and when i look online I only see cosplay stuff. there doesn't seem to be any resource, forum, or anything else available if your not cosplaying. In fact apparently 'original costume' cosplay seems to be frowned upon and a hot topic. Honestly I think cosplaying is cool, but i'm not up to that skill level and i'm doing my own thing, currently with duct tape. For instance the three next ideas are a ssss costume, a disco woodpecker who dances to 'i survive', and a dragon in shining armor. All made with duct tape of course.
Of course I'm wondering if I'm allowed to enter contests any more because they're now 'cosplay contests' and all about level of craftmenship. Some do seem to specifically say cosplay only and others are unspecific.
Thanks for listening to my ramblings.
So...I need some advice. There are still cons and festivals for original creations, though sadly, they ARE falling out of fashion somewhat. They tend to follow themes, like fantasy, sci fi and history fairs that often encourage people to dress up to the theme of the event. Maybe start asking around in those circles and see if there is someshing that would fit you nearby. Granted these are usually not contests but, you might still find your niche there.
Hi! I found out last week that there will be an "Outlander (http://www.syfy.com/syfywire/get-ready-outlander-season-2-new-jamie-trailer-and-season-1-recap)"-themed ball this Saturday night (Feb. 3). (http://peersdance.org/outlander.html) At very short notice I am trying to re-make an old Renaissance dress of mine into something suitable for the 1740s. (Yes, haha, for someone who has next to no sewing skills and not a lot of money or time -- but at least the group putting on the ball isn't hard-nosed about historical accuracy.)
Question for any of you in the U.S.:
What chain stores are likeliest to carry peasant-style white blouses with flouncy and/or bell sleeves? And/or ruffles around the neck? Cheap ones? I am going to check after work at Target and Ross. There is also an Anthropologie nearby, which judging by its website is likely to have the look I want, but at $100-plus prices. There are probably other chains that carry suitable blouses, which I'm not thinking of because I am over 40 and generally shop at tailored office-lady places like Talbots and Ann Taylor.
I live about 20 miles south of San Francisco, in an affluent suburban area full of chain stores. I'm just trying to think how to maximize my limited shopping time. I will also check a couple of the local thrift stores, including Goodwill and Plato's Closet.
I've found a fair number of visual references and clothing construction tips online. And I have had what I consider a stroke of genius, making panniers (the 18th-century equivalent of bustles, only they stick out sideways over each hip) out of coconut-fiber plant pot liners. So I have a construction plan. But if you have any further tips about looking sufficiently Louis Quinze, (https://historyofeuropeanfashion.wordpress.com/category/baroquerococo-1650-1800/)send 'em my way!
Thanks for the suggestion, Iceea!
Actually, I ended up just making flouncy cuffs out of very wide fabric ruffles I got at the crafts store. For future wear, I'll have more lead time to find a cheapo blouse at a thrift shop that I can cannibalize for sleeves.
I ended up renting a sewing machine (with mixed success -- a huge hassle to set up but once it finally worked it was a lot faster than hand-sewing).
I ended up wearing a *sort of* 1740s outfit consisting of:
Turquoise overdress with "engageantes" (big, floppy sleeve ruffles), cream-colored ribbon bows on the sleeves, and a small "pie crust" frill around the neckline
Decorative petticoat with a center panel of turquoise/brown/olive/cream print fabric
Underpetticoat in dark turquoise
Panniers made of 2 coconut-fiber planters threaded on an old belt of mine
Stockings, regular dance shoes (I didn't have time or budget to get authentic a la Pompadour reproduction shoes)
Pearl earrings, brown faux-pearl necklace on a ribbon tie, fan, rings, faux-pearl headdress
For next time it needs:
Reconstructing and hemming the decorative petticoat so it doesn't trip me
A stomacher (decorative front panel on the bodice)
Underblouse sleeves to fill in the slits in the overdress sleeves
Adapting my Victorian-style corset to work in an 18th-century dress bodice
Tailoring the dress bodice to flow more smoothly
Better shoes
Better headcovering
I am working on a cosplay for a currentobsessionahem moderate interest of mine. I've never really done a fancy cosplay before or like a super detailed one, so I'm mostly just bumbling around, throwing things at the walls and hoping they stick. So far things are going well mostly. But I am stuck on one thing.
Does anyone have any wig advice? I have a wig already and I guess I'm just trying to figure out styling and stuff since I've never worked with a wig before this. I've done some things and it's sorta working? Buuuuuut idk I've been looking at it so long that I'm not sure if it looks good or not anymore. *lies on the floor*I also have no idea where I'm gonna wear this cosplay bc I've never been to a con and don't know who I would go with or anything sooooooooo yepp
soooo I did the thing?
mebbe I will go to a con soon?
