I'm much too slow and perfectionist for NaNoWriMo; I've been working on my novel since 2011 (it's in the editing stage now, so it *should* be finished this year).
I doubt it will be a big hit, so it probably won't get an English translation.
I am tempted to try, but I don't know what to write.
How about a collection of poems? Or whatever you want to write?
But I want to write so many things! And I'll never reach any kind of goal if I try only poetry. True beauty in words is not achieved by quantity.
Also, I'm not that good.
It's about a misanthropic and prejudiced man who makes a last attempt to socialize and open to other people, because he's having hallucinations which he attributes to his prolongued state of solitude; this happens while the country around him is falling appart in civil war and religious strife. It's… not very happy or family friendly work.
I doubt it will be a big hit, so it probably won't get an English translation.
I know that sensation: wanting to write everything. Just pick one, there's lots of time! And you're right, some of the most best stories I've ever read were really short.
"Also, I'm not that good"... Okay, I'll try and avoid a rant on this, but how can you know if you don't even try? Is writing fun for you? Then it's enough! Who can say if you're "good"? No one! Art is so subjective that saying that a peace of art is "good" is impossible! Seriously, your poems are wonderful and I'm sure your prose will be, too. These are excuses, try! What would you lose if you didn't reach the goal? Nothing! So have fun writing!
Yes, I am an American, a nation where optimism is pumped into the water supply like fluoride...
Okay, that's not what I meant. I meant I'm not good enough at poetry to write more than a few poems a month. I'm not saying I'm a bad writer. I tent not to speak bad of myself, it's not healthy.
So in other words, a cross between The Elegance of the Hedgehog and Cormac McCarthy's The Road. (And maybe some Graham Greene for good measure.)
...This is absolutely none of my business, but you sound awfully pessimistic. (Even more so in the Introduction Thread.) Are you OK? Self-doubt and gloom are inevitable hazards on the creative path, but I'd hate to see them ganging up to keep you from even pulling out of the driveway. Yes, I am an American, a nation where optimism is pumped into the water supply like fluoride -- but I've also wrestled with depression and I know how it can distort a person's worldview.
Though my offhand remark about the future success of my book is more realism than pessimism; what I'm writing is not in the current literary trends at all, and I am not involved in any way in the literary and cultural life that could build me a network of journalistic acquaintances; the chances that my book will meet anything more than polite indifference are objectively very low; not to say they are non-existent, but if it's a hit, it will be a surprise hit no one will have seen coming (not even myself).
You're right there. On the other hand, singing one's own praises isn't easy and takes long. I'm still not easy on speaking good about things I am able to do well.
I would really like to read your stories on Nanowrimo so please, everyone, give it a try. Even, if you're not going to finish :).
The important you write it down somewhere we can read it. Though my boyfriend would need to translate every bit 'cause I didn't take french classes. But I shouldn't press on about publishing if it makes you feel uncomfortable.
I'm going for a surreal type of story. I've never written anything like it, but I find it interesting.
Since I don't even have an idea for a plot yet, I think I wouldn't want to make my story public, at least not without revising it. Imagining an audience right from the start would likely bring my perfectionist site out, not the creative one. ;)I feel the same way, but then again, I guess that's what a community is for. (Watch me be all secretive about whatever I do later, though :P)
"Quand je m'examine, je m'inquiète. Quand je me compare, je me rassure." - Talleyrand
(makes a grateful sign - With a finger on his lips, signals he's busy at present - busy digging the linked site - thank you so much ! )
I'm going to do NaNoWriMo. I'm horribly busy and I've never finished any story before but I am going to succeed. I've never done it before, but I have an oddly good feeling about it, not to mention that right now I'm sitting on the most complicated and fleshed out idea I've ever had. (Which isn't hard since most are just an image of a snowflake or something...) Yay, I'm so excited right now!
How well are Shakespeare's sonnets known in France? They're part of the canon throughout the English-speaking world. But I get the impression poetry doesn't cross language barriers as well as fiction or theater, where exact correspondence of meaning and sound is less crucial. For example, I would only have heard of (and not read) Baudelaire and a few other French poets if I hadn't also taken courses *in* French.
Maybe. I'm not entirely sure how that feature works and I've had a few random people on the website make themselves my writing buddies. If it works the way I think it does - which is sending each other messages, maybe? - then it makes sense for us to all be writing buddies since we already kind of know each other. That would be awesome. :D
Also, I love how there's someone who is specifically "NotThisCat."
On another note, I'm now in a deep existencial (how is that even spelt? Existensial? Existencial?) crisis, I no longer know what to work on! I have this story I've been wanting to write for over a year, BUT! Veterans suggest to work on new stories - BUT there are no new stories, and okay actually there is one, but what about keeping motivation and... Agh! I think I'll just stick to my old idea. ???
Yay! All signed up!I can't find you!
I actually have a real idea "ready." I have a beggining and an end for once (it will make all the difference). I even have several plot points mapped out - a stunning improvement from last month when I last tried to write something. I'm trying something different from what I normally do by using first person with four narrators. In the past I've stuck with third person. This might end up being a mistake. Oh, and my favorite character is the one I know the least about.Which Nanowrimo did you signed up for? The regular adult's event, or the youth program? (Probably the regular one since most of you guys signed up on that site)

Has anyone here done NaNoWriMo before, or are we all first timers?

And this is my first time.
I'm on the regular one and it is my first time.

Same here.
Yay! Both the planning part and the trying something new, that is. Though this just reminds me that I need to organize my bunch of floating ideas (read: beginnings and parts of middles and unattached ends). Actually, I need to pick one of them first...
So...does anyone want to be brave and share their general story concepts? :D

Uh, magic-ish world where some people get in trouble for having valuable blood. I am appearantly entirely incapable of writing magic without strict rules that limit very much what you can do with it. I'm trying to fix that.
That might not necessarily be a bad thing, unless you were really going for the opposite. Reminds me of a discussion on writing magic systems from Brandon Sanderson's Write About Dragons (http://www.writeaboutdragons.com/brandon_w2012/) (I'm preeetty sure the videos that addressed that are the two about magic and satisfying resolutions, but it's been a while), and the two "opposites" were magic being a sort of science with lots of rules and laws, or magic being more...just magical and unexplained.
My own brain tends to prevent me from writing about dragons even though dragons are crazy awesome.Mr. Fire-Breathing Dragon would like to have a quick chat with your brain. ;D

Has anybody else that problem that they go over 50 000 words, but never finish the novel? I've have participated two times and I have not finished those stories yet.
Anyway, the question is, would 50 000 word be normal amount of words for a English novel? I don't think that it's enough for Finnish even with these differences.
I think 50,000 words is on the smaller side?
My story is about twins in a pseudo-Andean setting who are worshipped as living gods and get evicted from home because of a volcano eruption. And then they meet a totally different tribe in the lowlands. In my mind it's way cooler than it sounds now in short form. :P
I'll be writing in German because I have to think about English too much. I think 50,000 words is on the smaller side? There's some stuff about word counts on Wikipedia which might help, but kind of just says that "the word count of novels varies a lot."

Aww, thanks for the nice feedback. I've been spending part of yesterday evening trying to find names for my characters. They always sound artificial, or difficult to pronounce, or lame. But I won't start writing still naming them X and Y (it's a girl and a boy...) ::)

Two das to NaNo and I have yet to decide whether I should remain in the adult site or switch to the YWP. Also, which story idea should I be working on. Grrrr.
Well, signed up, but highly doubt I'll be able to finish a novel by the end of the month although I do have some ideas. Personally, I rarely find naming difficult, but I do tend to try to avoid using the names of anyone I know (I then tend to end up having some difficulty separating the character from said person).

What name do you use there? "Fenris" is hardly easy to find.
Yayyy! Would you be so kind as to reveal us you NaNo name so we may add you as our writing buddy? (Come to think of it, I think you're the only guy in this community doing NaNo, am I wrong?)Eventin, and I have no idea. I wouldn't think I'd be the only bloke, though.
Eventin, and I have no idea. I wouldn't think I'd be the only bloke, though.
You could roll a dice to make the decision. ;)
I usually flip a coin when I have an important story-related decision to make. Like, literally, I once decided which main character I would kill off via coin-flip.
I've checked through most of the 29 pages of results for "Eventin", and I'm pretty sure I can't find you.It is this one: http://nanowrimo.org/participants/eventin
Also, oh noes, NaNo begins in less than two days and I have yet to decide which story idea I'll work on... You know what, I think I'll do the new one. Or the old one. No, the new one. No...
Tomorrow... Tomorrow... Tomorrow... In just a measly six hours NaNo will begin and I've barely made the decision. Yayy! Can't wait - and luckily Italy celebrates the "All Saints day" tomorrow -- or was it the Day of the Dead? In the south the dead apparently give candy to the kids... Kind of creepy, but nice, still, no school, so I can write all day long!!

Wait...you have school on Saturdays? /US ignorance
But so far, I think I'll have tomorrow mostly free. Well, half of it, anyway.
I spent part of the day drawing a cover for my novel-thing. I should probably have been plotting instead, but this was what I chose.
I tried to do the same, and pathetically failed. Means I'll just wait until Christmas and ask you for a present :P
Sure, won't cost me much. Don't expect extreme quality though.
Hehehe... I was... Kidding? If you want to do it I won't surely complain, but it was supposed to be a joke...
Maybe I'll try writing on the tablet, but it's no fun...I'm going to write it out on paper because I think better that way. I'll count up each page as I finish it to save time. Only nine and a half hours until tomorrow!

I write in word, simple and effective. I've written by hand before and I always cramp up.
I'll be writing in OpenOffice because that's what I'm used to from my masters thesis at the moment. (What a pity the pages I'm writing on that don't count for NaNoWriMo, too... 8) ) If you could give us feedback on how you like Scrivener, that would be nice - I haven't yet got the advantages of it.
Five minutes to midnight, people! I know I'll start as soon as the clock hits 00:00! Tehehehehee... So excited....I know!

just five hours left for me and i still can't decide whether i'm in or out!
*Waves hand in a jedi-like fashion* You're iiiiiiinn!!
No seriously, though. You could try, not like you lose anything!
On other news, I've unfortunately started my first NaNo at 00:01, grrr. Well, doesn't matter. Apparently I can produce more or less 14 words in a minute - that means I could just write two hours every day and win NaNo in a month. I'm feeling really positive right now ;D

You write faster than me apparently. By just a little.

I'm being way too excited over all of this. No, you are not too excited. I figure that's not possible. XD
Does anyone have any idea why my excerpt is currently an insane amount of gibberish?
I have no clue, but that is truly impressive gibberish. It really is. I wonder how many words that is...

2 hours, 19 minutes left!
Uh...it looks like a style sheet of some sort, plus some random elements? From Word? I have no idea.
It really is. I wonder how many words that is...
How's everyone's NaNo going? Me, I've already got sort of a plot. Yahoo, yay me! That said, I still have about 1000 words to write if I want to reach the daily goal...
I also have a sorta-plot. I have reached my goal for today (though I have no intention of stopping now) and have kinda introduced both my main characters. One of them has no name and is in jail, but they're both there. I'm also trying to piece together a more proper plot, but I think I'll end up just winging it.
"No name and is in jail" Reminds me of Elder Scrolls! At least Oblivion and Skyrim, since they'r the only ones I've played, but I'm getting interested ;) (Psst, your novel excerpt is a big chunk of code, fyi, or at least that's what I see)
Yep, don't know how it got there or how to remove it. I think copy pasting from word is a bad idea, just so you know.

I forgot to get in, so good luck for you all. November came so fast...
800 words down, 42,000 to go. :P I haven't even got a third of my characters introduced yet, which I suppose is good for pacing.
Um, for some reason I cannot update my word count.
Nuuu, you're still in time! It's November 1, isn't it?
Me, 900 something words down, 49100 to go! I haven't even introduced the plot yet, and not going to do it anytime soon. Slow pace fan here, and probably writer of a looooong novel.
You too? Neither can I! Weird...
Hmkay I'm in. And not quiet sure what they mean by most of the genres...
Pick one, you can always change it later ;)
Um, for some reason I cannot update my word count.
Done. Also Synopsis is written. Excerpt will follow and now my eyes demand a break from my computer :D good start that. But I have an Idea which is easy to follow. Would I find some of you under the same nicknames as here? I have to admit that I will use Nanowrimo as a daily training for my English grammar :D

Having the same problem. I guess there's too many enthusiastic writers all trying to do the same thing...I had that problem a few times already. It does look like everyone is trying to do the word count updates. XD
I am always ThisCat.
I hope I can at least update some time before midnight, or else I'll have a bunch of words on the wrong day...
Hehe... just asking you people a thing I'm really unsure about. If dragons are a main species in my story, and the relationships between them and the protagonists are really deep, would it still make sense for them to be mute? Because I really don't know whether they should speak or not...
My compliments, Cat
Your word count's incredible
Now get back and write!

And anyway, deep relationships can still work without verbal communication.Aye. And even if the plot were to require them to cooperate with members of another species, there would be other forms communication. (Maybe not with quill and parchment the relative size of postage stamps, though. ;) )
If you can manage to write them mute I think it could be very interesting. See what feels more right for you.
Well...cats can't talk. :P And anyway, deep relationships can still work without verbal communication. Would it make sense in the story-world for them to be able to talk? (or actually wait maybe that's what you're asking...)
Are the dragons people-level sentient, or more animal-level?
Aye. And even if the plot were to require them to cooperate with members of another species, there would be other forms communication. (Maybe not with quill and parchment the relative size of postage stamps, though. ;) )
Cooperation with humans in a combat situation would be a different matter, however. There's a definitive speed advantage in thundering "behind you!" at one of those in his native tongue.
My compliments, Cat

Well, the first day's gone by and I've met my goal, but I have a tiny bit of a problem. More of a dilemma really. Do I want to write the entire thing from the point of view of only one character, or do I want to switch back and forth. Should I tell the MC the other person's secrets before he gets to know them, should I start svitching POV later on in the novel? Should I maybe have a paragraph or two from the villain's POV? So many questions...
In one of Terry Pratchetts books the dragons communicated via telepathy and it worked fine.I think the telepathic breed of dragons managed to spread to two books by now. [Sound of an irony detector undergoing matter-antimatter-annihilation in the next state over] One of these days, we'll likely read of telekinetic dragons whose human companions relay their messages (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqiUGjghlzU&t=90) against their own will. 8)
Are there two MC's? If yes, then switch between them immediately. Get the reader used to it. Is the book aimed at creating an atmosphere of mystery? Then keep consistence until there is no mystery to be revealed. Do you want the reader to know, because hiding stuff from your MC is easy, hiding it from your reader is not. Consider carefully. That said, I love books with switching POV, and they're fun and really stimulating to write. It's tricky, but very useful and entertaining.
Having the villain narrate a scene is always a bad idea, but if you plan to redeem him later on, then it may not be so horrible. Still, I advise against.
Thanks for tips.
It's not like he would narrate it though, I write in third person, it would just be a few mysterious lines hinting at the upcoming conflict or something.
Ah, third person! As long as the villain doesn't reveal his master plan to us before the hero gets to know in in the Villany Monologue Scene, it should be fine.
I almost always write in third person. It seems more natural to me.
Yeah, same here. Either that, or, strangely enough, first person plural. I'm still trying to figure out why I have such an avoidance to writing "I".
(also, ThisCat, is there some pattern to the changing of the cryptic numbered lines that appear in your signature?)
I think I dislike writing "I" because I rarely actually write about myself.
(hehe, I was wondering when someone would take notice of that. Today's line might give a hint actually.)

Uf, not sure what that'd do to my wordcount ;).Nothing, words in morse correspond to the words in the plaintext. Character, line and page counts would get interesting, though. ;)
(I had taken notice of that weeks ago, but please don't reveal it yet. I've been trying to decode the messages, sshhhh!)
I actually like writing in first person, and those stories never end up being about myself. On the contrary, when I can get in the head of the characters directly, not only does the narration get a lot more expressive, but the characters take life of their own. Sometimes they even do stuff they're not supposed to do but is better for the story. (Plus, I never write from a single POV, so it's almost impossible to write about yourself when you have three lively characters.) That being said, I'm writing this story in third limited because it feels right this way.
Nothing, words in morse correspond to the words in the plaintext. Character, line and page counts would get interesting, though. ;)Eurythmie...
(I initially wanted to refer to Eurythmie and the famous, if misled, meme of "dance your name" etc.. That would be a puzzler for word counting!)
(If you want a hint, there are exactly 16 lines. Good luck, tell me when you've got it.)
I do write first person sometimes, though never fanfiction, and it's fun enough. I think it depends very much on what kind of story I'm writing.
Adding onto the point of view discussion, I'm currently doing first person and switching between four narrators - it's proving immensely challenging. (Possibly because I have almost no experience with first person.) I'm considering going over to third for the duration of November and then translating it back to first if I ever edit it. Would this be a good idea?
[/quote
Might work. If helps your creativity it's definitely the right way. Mine is a discripton from a first person narrator but most times I have to use third person while portraiing the characters history. I think I will start switching between the person's descriptions because it is really boring only reading about one person only all the time. This will give me the opportunity to compare the steps of development each of them makes. Also I plan on putting in intermissions containing kind of philosophical issues, but first I have to see how I will do during work days.
I haven't done first person in a veeery long time, and this time I'm going for a more-or-less omniscient third person view, which is probably a good thing because I ended up with a grand total of seven[/b] main characters. :P
Somehow my story about strange machines is turning into a debate about flying rats.Know that feeling.
Somehow my story about strange machines is turning into a debate about flying rats.
It took me 3154 words to give the name of my second MC, but I did. Rejoice.
*looks at own word count*Don't feel bad, I'm still at zero. Will probably not get around to start until Tuesday.
...I'm going to need to catch up with my word count tomorrow. :( Two days, and I'm already behind...
It's been forever and a year since I last did first person, and I'm finding really challenging. Not to mention I have four main characters. For now I think I will do third, but follow a different character for each section. (Like, you'll know how they feel and how they think the others feel but won't actually be inside they're head.)I only have one main character, so I felt comfortable with working with first person view. I just feel like I'm messing it up every time somehow. xD
Okay, I've got it. Instead of worrying about writing 1667 words, it feels much more manageable to write 5ish pages since I write on average about 380 words per page. Yay!
Heh, to me it's much more manageable to say "Write 100 words. Just 100. You only have to do it 17 times. Easy! You're only one day behind, a day is easy to make up for!"
I usually just say "write this scene, then see how many words you have. Not enough? Write another scene."
It's just that my scenes are so long. I'll spend an hour writing banter or describing the unusual state of a newspaper when I should be reading my history textbook.
Ah, yeah, schoolwork. That's kinda important, isn't it?
Ah, yeah, schoolwork. That's kinda important, isn't it?
Sooo... Today I was super-stressed for a test tomorrow and wrote basically nothing. Then, when it was already late, I realized there was no test tomorrow and I could have spent so many hours NaNoing. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr...
Today, I was super-weird because I didn't sleep at all tonight. For some reason this doesn't seem to have affected my writing skills all that much...
I actually find that lack of sleep makes me more creative. When I drive myself past a certain point, I can write weird stuff without worrying about what people will think of it - it is thus a method I use very very often ;)
Not sleeping much doesn't really help me much at all, either. I would write better a bit after I wake up, or during the early morning into the afternoon. Nights and evenings differ on that day. But I get stuck at a part where I think, "What do I write here? I kind of forgot what I was writing about". I forgot to put out a basic sketch of what I was planning on doing, which isn't good.. :C
I hope you guys are going well with your word counts and the story. :)
Word's grammar check wants me to correct "the dark" to "The dark", in the middle of a sentence. What the frick?
I have found word's grammar to be dubious at the best of times. Spell-check is great, though (except for names).
Argh, I'm wondering how I could fit a research trip to a zoo into my already-to-tight-time schedule... ::)I need to see live Lama examples :PVideos or pictures on the internet aren't enough?
If you're using Word 2010, I can help with changing language. Down at the very bottom of the window, next to the word count, there's a button what should in yours say English (U.S.) or something similar. Click on that. Then choose English (U.K.) or English (Australia) or whatever English out of the stupidly large amount of English versions there are that you'd like. That should fix things for you.
Congrats. I was either laying silently in the dark or dreaming weird stuff including the building of my primary school with interior hinting that this building had to be changed into a four star restaurant. I will not include this to my story.
By the way, when I was trying to sleep yesterday, my brain went on a scripting spree. I now have something resembling a plot! I think I've actually gotten down many of the major plot-points, and even connected most of the loose threads. This has never happened to me before!
Nuuuu, the NaNo write-in went down! Pity, the prompts were fun - I wrote more today than I have ever written these days, yay me!
Yay you! I am halfway through my third chapter. I am seriously amazed I managed to write a multiple chapter story, even though it's not done yet and my chapters are really short.
I know it's kind of pathetic to be excited for 1300 words, but I'm a slow writer, and I still have an entire hour to do stuff! Go NaNo! I'm kind of high on excitement right now...

As I'm doubling your age soon, I'm impressed on writers being much younger than me and writing more. So 1300 IS great. If it wasn't for work it would be easier. But I like writing. It really puts my thoughts into the right order.
Hey, it's never pathetic to get exited over improvement. Even if you improve your skills on a level far below what "they" say is the normal level (not that it is, 1300 words in a day is seriously good) the most important thing is getting better. Everyone who's really good now has been on a lower level, and they got where they are through nothing but practice. Write and be proud! Maybe you won't win this year, but what you learn now can let you win next year.
My best writing day ever was one where I totalled 3000 words. Why can't I do that again!
Hehe, I've kinda started writing when I was... 8. Or 9. (Not to say my stories were anything near readable, but I'm so proud of them!) So I tend to forget that I'm still younger than most writers out there and have time to get better at doing this.
Hey, I was writing before I could write. Seriously, I have an adorable little notebook somewhere with a bunch of drawings from a 2-3 year old and a nonsensical story my grandpa wrote down for me. It's ridiculous. Once, when I was fourteen or something, I wrote a story in my head while I was outside, and then I went in and wrote a thousand words in a quarter or something. I already had all the words, just needed to write it down. It's just the beginning of a story that will never get finished, but to this day it's still the best quality writing I have ever done.
Writing stories in your mind is the most bestest way to do stuff! Bound by no keyboard and speed limitations.
Your euphoria is kind of infectious. I wanted to shut down my laptop but, well, maybe I'll still write some hundred words, just another scence... :)
Hehe, look at me:
This morning - "Come on, already 300 words! Maybe today I can do it, write more!"
This afternoon - "Another 300 words! Just three more of these and I'll be fine for the day."
At 900-something: "Almost 1000"
Every single sentence later: "Another 100!"
After reaching the goal: "I can do better, make that 1700 today!"
Now: "1943? I can reach 2000!"
And my body insists I should sleep, but my body can wait. I think I've found and kidnapped ThisCat's muse.
Wait... if you have my muse... what is posessing me to sit down and write out all the most bloody, horribly violent scenes of my novel today? Because it's a pretty good muse.
Bloody, horribly violent scenes? That may or may not be my muse. Anyways, I'm giving yours back - I've reacher 5100 total words and 2000 and ALMOST 300 for the day but my body is kinda winning over with its weird sleep thing. Why does it like so much being comatose for eight hours a day?!
We don't know Nimphy, we just don't know.
Also, I'm in trouble. I'm in the perfect place for a scene break, but the scene isn't over yet! I can't have the line "that's when the screaming began" in the middle of a scene!
That's a perfect point to break a scene, but if you don't want to you can:
A) Cheat and rearrange the scene or cut it in two.
B) Just have a stand alone line between paragraphs (my brain is too tired to think straightly and remember the name), and not interrupt the scene at all. Then find a more effective sentence to close the scene.
I figured it out. I'll just end the chapter.
Urrrrg... I want to write but I don't have time! Why do Tuesdays and Wednesdays have to be so busy? I'm going to have to play major catch-up tomorrow!
And it's great that you guys have such amassing writing muses at the moment! It seems that mine has gotten buried under a pile of homework. I had only about 25 minutes to write something yesterday and could only get out 104 words.
I'm terribly sorry for all you people who lack inspiration - I promise that one day will come when the "muse" whispers something to your ear. As most muses are not really nice and helpful, they'll leave afterwards, but you'll be inspired. And in the meanwhile, do what my muse told me to do: introduce a new character. A side character or a main one, doesn't matter. One that you'll have fun writing.
She also told me to set stuff on fire. I listened to her, but don't try this at home, kids.
On another subject. I'm embarking on a language barrier mission, yahoo! Wish me luck!
Do you ever get that thing where one of your side characters just grows on you? I think one of mine is turning into an MC in her own right, and I didn't even have plans for her to exist as anything more than someone to make dialogue with. I even changed her from male to female on a whim. She's a big part of the plot now!
Word goal reached today, too! These "Just 100 more - and repeat 10 times" things are working! Tehehehe...
@mithrysc: We all believe in you, Mith! You can do it, write like crazy and remember that sleep is secondary and apparently coffee drives adults through crazy feats!
...trying to stay silent. Standing still at the center...
Who will join today's write in? I know I will! (Word wars are a great way to boost word count. They last 15 minutes and I average 500 words on each. It may not be much, but it feels like very little time has passed and I can reach the daily goal just with three or four of these :D)
/>
Come and join us! We write in company and have biscuits and prompts and viking chipmunks!
And now I've named a teacher Mr. Muffin... Plus the annoying classmates aren't as annoying as I had hoped they'd be.
They mentioned me, but they didn't read my text because I had to cut it off and it got weird. :(
And now I've named a teacher Mr. Muffin... Plus the annoying classmates aren't as annoying as I had hoped they'd be.
You were there? Didn't notice you! Too bad! I hope you've had fun (they didn't even mention me, but it doesn't really matter).
Today I wrote 2700 words, yay me! I'm starting to get the hang of this thing :D
...I have Writer's Block, I think. I've spent so many hours in front of the computer and only got... 97 words.
I think I'll try and write something like crazy now. Or maybe not.
Try to go at it from another angle. When I got writer's block I just wrote a scene from later in the novel.
I always do that. Still didn't work. Remember the diary entry that we could write as a prompt yesterday at the write-in? I started making more of those. I felt inspired, and anything is good by now. 300 words and going :D
You know what I was saying about flying rats? It turns out they are having a secret war with the pigeons. I'm so confused.
:) good to hear you found your solution. I actually got a horrible bout of writer's block the day before we were starting, but it dissappeared when I decided on an entrely different opening. There's always a way.
Oh, nuuuuu! I can't believe it! I wrote all those words and got so excited... then remember that the character technically couldn't read, nor write! ARGH! All that work for nothing... :'(
Stel, (can I call you Stel?) I'm definitely going to read your story, too :D
It was a journal entry, right? Could you just change who wrote it? If that doesn't work do they have voice-recorders or something? Or maybe someone scribed for them?
You know what I was saying about flying rats? It turns out they are having a secret war with the pigeons. I'm so confused.
Only that character could write. She was travelling alone, and her only companion was a wyvern. But yeah, I concluded that they would have magic voice-recorders or something (coughdeusexmachinacough) :)
Does anyone want to read my gruesome description of what happens when you give a bunch of people completely random powers?
(the important question) How random?Random enough that very few survives.
...how gruesome?
Random enough that very few survives.
Gruesome enough that I'm going to write it in white so that you have to highlight to read it. My novel is not for children or the faint of heart.
I should be scared off by this but... Bring it on, Kitty!
Alright. Higlight below to read. DO NOT read if you don't like blood.
Alright. Higlight below to read. DO NOT read if you don't like blood.
Some people just exploded in different ways. Some had their blood turn to ice, others fire, and others yet to different, more gruesome things. The castle was destroyed, many bystanders killed, Aleume himself was strangled by one who’s blood made skin constrict, after the poor fellow himself had ruptured beside him. The few lucky ones who ended up with harmless constructs were mostly rather useless as well.
Huh. That's unique.
While it's a very interesting scene (I would say cool, but I don't think if that's the right word... Actually, it is. This is pretty cool), I don't really think it's gruesome. I mean, you skipped over so much details! Had it been me, I'd have probably spent half a page on this thing alone ;)
I'm going to take that as a compliment.
I would have, but it's not really in character for the one who's speaking, and she wouldn't know the details anyway, seeing as she's just recounting 800 years old history. I mostly called it gruesome because of the, uh, skin thing.
Ah, so that explains it! It's better that way, yeah.
I'm going to take that as a compliment.Oops. It didn't occurred to me that it might be taken differently.

Meanwhile, over in my story:
A Brief History of SING
After a tragic incident resulting in the incineration of the family farm, the poor, still smoking family moved into a two-room, two-story house in Twentysix. At this time Twentysix could hardly be called a village and consisted of one street, a handful of houses, and a post office. Searching for some kind of income, the family converted the bottom floor into...
History: for when the present makes no sense.
Stel, I'm afraid your synopsis got cut off.
So, are we sharing our stories now? Maybe tomorrow. Now it's 1am, so technically tomorrow, so it's technically today. Okay, maybe today in the morning.
Meanwhile, over at my story I reached 10.000 words (YESSS!) and the plot has... Yet to begin... Darn. I'm the queen of Slow Pace Queendom.

Hm....that wasn't as bad as I expected, ThisCat. ;) Not that that's bad in itself. Seeing as it's a history-recap though it makes a lot of sense.
Is there also a Twentyfive and a Twentyseven? :P
And this brings up another of my questions. How have you guys been writing your stories so far?
So far I've been doing my story very non-linearly. I wrote a scene near the beginning, the last scene, then a scene that came before the near-beginning-one, and now I'm on the two pivotal meetings of the story. I'm also...not planning too much. Small details I throw in are sending down roots and becoming recurring themes.

There is a Twentyfive and a Twentyseven. Twentyfive, however was abandoned after the first winter because of heavy snows. Twentyseven went on to become a huge coastal city that was renamed Estuary Place. (Can you tell I'm making this all up on the spot?)
So far I've been going in chronological order, but skipping scenes. I may go back to them later.
May? You're saying you might just leave the story with holes in it?
Well, I don't really like in chronological order, but still keep in the same "zone"... I'm too sleepy to be coherent at this point). Basically all the scenes so far take place in the beginning, het they are written out of order. Being a pantser usually means you don't know where you're going to end up, so it's not like I can write the last scenes (luckily, because I probably would)
I'd actually consider myself more of a "pantser" (or "exploration" writer), since I actually have no idea what happens in between those scenes. (I know my characters have goals, and I know some of them will complete those goals. I just don't know how.)
I just...uh, stuck those scenes in like...uh, the weirdly infrequent warp threads in a cloth, and then I fill in the space between those definite scenes with....weft threads of unplanned colors. Yeah.
Eek! I went to my first write-in today! It was non-disastrous, which is good, and I got more than 1000 words written, which I needed. It was so fun!
Okay, so I took advantage of the NaNo trial and downloaded Scrivener. I'm spending time that I could use for writing by doing what's commonly called "worldbuilding", and by me called "having fun being God".

it looks quite interesting though these little helpers always succeed in confusing me. For instance at university we were introduced to "citavi". The time I needed getting how it works I was done with the original citing. But as my plot is anything but complex (it jumps back and forth in time but I don't have to invent it really, it just happens), I will stick to just writing. Soo, I've nearly caught up on Nimphy, yay! But I want to reach 11500 at minimum. So onward!
Aww, and I was glad I had overcome you.
Hey, anyone here up for a word sprint? Or any kind of write-in? Because I'm getting bored and writing in company is so much fun.
Why not? It's 6:06 in the morning, I'm a morning person, I need to stop thinking about music - even my story is beginning to turn into something about music, and I'm way behind on my word count. We just pick a time to stop and write as fast as we can, correct?
Aww, and I was glad I had overcome you.

We also pick a time to start. How does :25 sound? My time right now, in this second it's :13 for me, but the computer's clock is off, so you may give the start signal.
And we have 15 minutes.
15 minutes of intense writing. Does anyone want a prompt?
Grrr. 439. I usually do better.
You write faster than I do.
I do? Wow. I usually write slowly, but in word races I really write a lot. And have fun. And discover some pretty darn interesting things about my characters.
I know people who in those 15 minutes can write up to 900 words O_o
Anyone up for another one at :00?

466, better :)
290, worse. :(
Ah, well. I tried. :)
Hey, look at it like this: those are 300 whole words you didn't have before! Do you know what that means? In half an hour you just wrote 600 words that you didn't have before, and if you do two more of these races you'll me more than done for the day!
I'm sitting at 11.600 at the moment.
Meanwhile, I'll post a short excerpt from what I just wrote. I did say that I would be sharing something "yesterday" night.
1) Humans were quite ugly. They were largely hairless, and all the ahir they did have was concentrated on top of their head, and only there. Their skin was a sickly, pale mixture of yellow and pink and their lips for some reason were bright pink, making them look even worse. They had little ears which for some reason had rounded tips. And they were absolutely useless. They could not smell anything, without their eyesight they were almost paralyzed, they were unable to track the origin of a scent, and their hearing was so horrible she suspected they could be in the middle of a storm and not hear anything. They were slow and incredibly frail - Caelan had once managed to break a leg just by falling down a tree [...] (continues describing humans for a bit)
Uhm, these humans are pretty horrible. I can picture them pretty well but what is their special ability? How do they cope? All those question are not down to critique but mean I'm in on the story. I would like to know more about these creatures and whether they are part of a fantasy world or provide a fearful sight to the future were evolution has take its course due to the fashion industrie's request to shear your hair all over the body (excluding the top) and the mobile technology leaving us with a loss of hearing because we are only writing to each other in spite of talking directly...
You inspire my fantasy Nimphy, well done.
They're... normal humans. Like you and me. The POV character is not XD You just called both of us ugly!
I'm quite sure none of us is ugly. But sometimes that is pretty much how I see our species. Though my hearing is pretty good and my lips are of a really nice colour far away from pink ;). But if I was an alien I would be impressed as well as terrified by our culture. Do you read "The End" webcomic? There aliens collected information on human beings which lead to a primer including the information, that humans were capable of only speaking about two to three different languages :D.
Never read it, but it's interesting. Just look at all of our signatures, the alien is right. For now.
And I'm really glad you thought I wasn't describing normal humans. Means I did it the right way :D
Anyone in the mood for a third race or shall we leave it at that?
Another 15 Minutes would be fine. Afterwards I should go on with my knitting. The first try needed some improvement but now the pattern is nearly as I thought it might be.
:20 then?
:30 ?
:30 it is!
Horay, maybe I will catch up on This Cat's word count, too. Though I start to tyre of a bit.
Its starting to seem like 50,000 words isn't enough. Six thousand words in, and plot hasn't really gotten off the ground yet.
So here is part of today's achievment. It was not easy to choose an appropriate break because, yeah well, some of the events covered in that particular file are even sad if you stick to scratching the surface:
"Farrell’s story might be one of the saddest. He started showing signs of problematic behaviour considering social interaction early in kindergarten. There he first attracted attention by bossing other kids around or getting pretty angry if he just thought someone called him names. Also he started shouting back at the educators if they reminded him about the rules. On seldom occassions he turned violent against others but a level you would consider on the edge of normality for a child his age. They made a notice for the primary school taking him over but left it at that. While he went at another school his younger brother stayed at the kindergarten. As he fared far better than his older brother authorities did not take any notice of the family. Farrell managed to do well at school at the first time. He was eager in learning to read and write and participated in lessons. He also managed keeping the rules of some sorts but at first grade the setting is more open for kids.
After some time his teachers faced some severe problems with him. It was plain that Farrell had to encounter unpleasant circumstances at home. On some weeks he never changed his cloth and didn’t even bring changings for sports lessons with him. Also his hair would get really filthy and his homework was not done properly, if it was done at all."
And now I think I should call it quits for today. Got 4,766 words done today (and 1,676 yesterday), so I am starting to catch up from not being able to write in the first week.
Nooooo, you should get to 5.000 words! Everyone knows rounded numbers are great!
I agree. It's less then 300 words before earning the next badge. Fenris, you can do this!
I agree. It's less then 300 words before earning the next badge. Fenris, you can do this!Well, with the 1,676 words I wrote yesterday, I got the 5k words badge. I don't think anything I'd write currently would be up to par though, and the 4,766 words I wrote today ended the first chapter (so I got the prologue and the first chapter done). It seems like I'll have quite a bit of time off tomorrow as well, so hopefully I'll reach the 10k words mark then.
Heh, I find it funny. I'm sitting at 11.999 words. Just one more and I'd be at 12.000. Yet the change is too big! I don't wanna!
Do it. And then take up the chase again :).
Did it. Waaah, my perfect number is ruined! I shall get to 13000, then.
I'm stuck. I'm suposed to write a chapter today (I write short chapters) to catch up to my prefered wordcount, but even though I know how I want to end it, I have no clue what to put in the middle! What do I doooo?Start write and hope the ending of the chapter will make sense from what you write in the middle?

You must know something that will happen. I quite loved Veronica Roth's peptalk, it's a thing that I often do for my beloved children... I mean, stories. My beloved stories. Be the writer your story needs. You usually write in chronological order? Write out of order. Find a scene in the future you want to write and just do it. The same thing happened to me (I knew what should happen, just not how to fill in the scene) today, and I went at some not-better-specified point in the future and started writing random scenes. Anything. I've already locked in one of the scenes that a few days ago were "future".
Dammit.
I just wrote a scene I really liked - and somehow I managed to lose it all!
Nooo! That's the worst thing that could happen!
I finished writing the ending of chapter 5. I think this is the first one to end on a cliffhanger. I still need the insides of the chapter though, and I still don't know what to fill it with.
False alarm, both luckily and unluckily. Luckily because I am SO glad I didn't lose that scene. Unluckily because I re-wrote from scratch about half of the scene before I found out that I had somehow managed to hide the original version on a sub-sub-sub folder of sorts.
I think I missed my daily wordcount bo one word. Would anyone kill me if I told them I cheated at that one?
Oh, I make sure to register all of my failures. All of them. So don't cheat! It's bad and Santa will give you charcoal for Christmas!
One word. Whether or not I cheated could depend on which clock you're following. I'm just glad you're being sarcastic.

You know, I thought you guys should know that I'm totally stalking all of you on the NaNo website...I can see you, but you can't see me! Mwahahaha.
(Like you, Nimphy, I saw you adopting a character in the forums) *Casual whistle*
Will somebody be in at the late afternoon (About 5:00 PM GM+1[about 11AM to 8 AM depending where you are located in the US])? These write ins really help.
...HEY! Stop it!!
Pfft, didn't really need the character, just the name. I looked at the last one in the character section and adopted it for mine, too lazy to search through the thousands of names in the name thread. And you should also know that I sometimes adopt stuff just for the sake of adopting stuff, not because I need it, and what I do really need I will definitely tweak later, I don't like writing things that are not mine. But I DO have a little folder called "Stuff I shall steal". ::) (Mostly of names and some nice lines I will tweak)
C... Can't we make it 5:30?
Its fine by me, then I will have a pleasant evening meal :)
... At 6pm or something? Do you eat that early?
It should have been my lunch... but as it is turning dark. I fear it will last till 6 pm, so if you want to, start the first round without me. I will join the next certainly ;). *Jumps to her plate and starts to eat!*
Oh, so my sister promised me she'd leave the computer to me at this hour. Three minutes before the race, she goes all "But I have homework to do, I need the computer!!" Should we both schedule it to later?
Fine with me. I'm pretty much open for the rest of the day *waves hand vaguely*
I was writing slowly, but I still managed to write 530 words. Yay. (You know the history lessons you're all writing? Now it's my turn...)
Slowly...530... I did 438. But that's ok. Leo sometimes did not react to my vocab requests but I would not have written far more anyways ;). Next round at :30?
494. Not bad. I tried to rush this time, and I wrote less. I'm starting to see a pattern here... Next one at :55?
505 but I will try to write less next time. Writing so fast gets my heart bumping.
:05 would be better ;)
Argh, I was eating lunch. Still got 417 words, though. I think whenever I try to write fast I immediately get stuck on a sentence composition that I don't like, but when I write normally I rarely go back and edit until later. Hmmm...
Okay then! If this was a real race we would be on par and this would be the "Final Match!" Fortunately this is not a race.
Join us in the next one, then!
But I DO have a little folder called "Stuff I shall steal". ::) (Mostly of names and some nice lines I will tweak)
Ha, me too! It's like eight pages of the most ridiculous random thoughts. Here, some excerpts, for your amusement.
-The chicken is the bookend. Scratch that. Ha ha, chicken scratch.
-Bring orange guy back. "Aah! It's you again!" NOPE NOPE nope nope. We figured this aaalll out. :D
- I HOLD THE POWER OF LIFE AND DEATH!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHA! I CAN CRUSH THEM ALL WITH THE POWER IN MY KEYBOARD! AHAHAHAHAHAA!! *Rubs hands together and grins evilly*
-Absquatulation is a truly awesome word. I must use it sometime.
-Hey! Hey! Plot specifically for the Group by the Secondbadguy.
-Leave your conscience at the door
The majority of that is related to stuff other people wrote, if not exactly. And I've got seven pages of this stuff...but the best part is, that I know exactly what all of that means.
- I HOLD THE POWER OF LIFE AND DEATH!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHA! I CAN CRUSH THEM ALL WITH THE POWER IN MY KEYBOARD! AHAHAHAHAHAA!! *Rubs hands together and grins evilly*
400, so two write ins to go. But I could do with a little break :).
Note to myself. Writing seems to be unhealthy on some subjects. Will exermine this further the next days ;).
Yup, I also vote for a short break, even though I almost reached my daily goal. Next one at :00?MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
And we DO hold the Power of Life and Death!!! We can destroy entire lands, entire worlds, by pressing the backspace key! We can kill all the characters on a whim! We can bring people back from the dead, and make them die again, all with our fingers! Just our fingers!
I caused a volcano eruption last week, wuhahaha! <-- evil laugh
I'd be in at (20):00. Must prepare my dinner before. :)

How long do we write? (I already lost my first 5min for a stupid phone call >:( )
For 15 mins.
I tried and be slow this time. Even eated while I wrote. 569 words. Ladies, and gentlemen, we now know the truth.
How long do we write? (I already lost my first 5min for a stupid phone call >:( )
Its always fifteen minutes of constant writing.
Okay Nimphy, how are you doing this? Eating and writing at the same time? I managed to do 490 again. I hit the 15.000 :). I will just do about 2 hundred more than I won't have to catch up as much tomorrow.
1) Open the pack of M&M's one minute before the race starts.
2) Write. Slowly. Think before you write and enjoy it. And don't you dare stop and go back to correct grammatical and/or spelling mistakes.
3) Every 30 seconds, stop writing, take an M&M and eat it. Munch. Enjoy. Think about your next sentence very carefully.
4) Repeat from step 2.
So... if no one wants another word race, I'll do my best to catch up wih kex by myself. But first, I shall feed.

Random question: do you guys use scripts? Searching for tips for my own, non-NaNoWriMo writing. I'm so totally not stuck there, nope... :P
Well, I'm doing my best to catch up with you (only70006000 or so words to go! Which isn't hard at all!), so I'm pretty much up for anything. I need to find some M&Ms though.

Yeah.
Clayres, it depends. I know that most of us have at least a rough idea of where the plot will go. Example:Thanks, y'all.
Joe wants a sandwich. He eats his sandwich.
Then we fill in the missing parts:
Joe wants a sandwich. He goes to the kitchen. He makes his sandwich. He eats his sandwich.
And then add the details, etcetera. Then, there are the ever famous plotters and pantsers. Plotters already know everything. They are usually quick writers, because they know what they have to do, and they may easily jump from one point to the other in writing. Pantsers improvise. I'm pansting this novel, so while I have the roughest idea of where this should be going, no plot yet.
It really all depends on what you want to do. You want to have a script, fine. You want to improvise, still fine. However, never make the script too detailed. If it can be mistaked for writing, you're losing time.
Nimphy we both caught up on ThisCat today. If she writes today, the hunt will go on. Oh and you are only elven times 100 behind me so you might catch me this evening ;).
Thanks.
I'm afraid I'm stuck somewhere between plotting and pantsing, is all. And there are like a thousand ideas in my head that have absolutely nothing to do with the story at hand. Aaargh! Hard to concentrate like that.
I know, trust me! Come on, you can do it, we all believe in you! If a thought doesn't go away, you either adapt it to your story (or the story to it), or write it down for a future story. And being stuck between the two is not a bad thing. I often switch myself. It's how you should write. Be whatever you have to be for your story. Thanks again. *mumblesIcandothisIcandothisIcandothisIcandomumblemumblemumble...*
Okay, this is WEIRD. NaNo, Wordcounter and my Scrivener give me three different word counts, which are at a difference of 14233 (Scrivener) to 14235 (Wordcounter) and 14307 (NaNoWriMo). WEIRD.
I was writing slowly, but I still managed to write 530 words. Yay. (You know the history lessons you're all writing? Now it's my turn...)
I eventually finished that history lesson - after eight pages. And I was really looking forward to writing after school today but forgot my folder at home. So no writing for me. (Probably won't get home for another hour at least.)Aww. :( Hopefully you'll get home really quickly/ come up with lots of brilliant ideas/ find more paper that you won't mind using?
Aww. :( Hopefully you'll get home really quickly/ come up with lots of brilliant ideas/ find more paper that you won't mind using?
My history lessons are only a couple of paragraphs each. Hm. I have no idea how much pages they take up combined.
Okay! I just got home! I actually was able to find some paper - napkins. I managed to get a lot onto those, but I don't think I'll try them again in the future if I can help it.Ah, the typical material for geniuses and flashes of inspirations--the trusty paper napkin. :P
If anyone's interested in writing at the same time as someone else in the world, I'll be doing sprints at :30 pretty much hourly. Need to get my word count up, after all.
Well, today is catching-up day for me. :D
269 words. All of it is dialogue, though, and I take longer doing that. I should probably make my characters less bitingly sarcastic and infuriating.
Sheesh, you guys caught up with me while I was stuck on... things. Let's see how long that lasts.

Bring it on, kitty! >:D
Next one at :15, then?
Next one at :15, then?
Alright.
326. I write slowly I guess, but I'm pretty happy with what I'm getting.
Oops, forgot the word sprint! Dammit! I'll just wait the next one...
So I have no one to join me in 5 mins?
So I have no one to join me in 5 mins?
480. That is fine. It is only 400 and I would have caught up my daily wordcount. *excited*
Hah, I got back my speed. Thank you very much, Kex!
These word sprints are great, but I know I'm going to regret them when I edit. I have written things like Cityname1, Cityname2, HealerName, Name, and other things just so I don't have to stop and think about worldbuilding.
I suppose everyone is done with their word count but me?

Nope, don't think I have my wordcount. Whenever I need a name I just go to the adopt a name section of the forum though. I usually find something. Or I translate a random word into the cypher I use for the foreign language. You have no idea what sort of weirdness some characters are named.
I like the cypher idea. Sometimes I DO have a name (like in this last word sprint) but my memory fails me and I start writing those things. Shall we continue:
a) With word sprints - :45
b) Writing by ourselves
Both. :P (I'm still doing sprints whether or not anyone's doing them with me, just because I really need to get some more writing done.)

a) sounds good. Let's see if I can get this show on the road. Or off it. My characters are currently standing randomly in the midddle of a road.
I was sure I had written super-slowly. 529 words according to the less favorable site (AKA wordcounter) I'm just hopping back and forth in time, afraid to start the real plot...
Heh. Lonely word sprints sound sad.*sniff*
Hurrah, plot has finally started moving, chapter 2 is done (although it ended up significantly shorter than I expected), I just need a thousand more words till the 10k words badge and one out of three actually named characters are dead along with a whole slew of innocent animals.

Oh, well. I have a creepy, zombie-mutant dog, though it died (again) shortly after it's first appearance.
I'm still considering carefully which character should I kill.
Will you stop it already? I want to read your book right now AND you're making my inner critic yell even louder! It took a lot of effort to close her in that cell, so stop it!
Oh, well. I have a creepy, zombie-mutant dog, though it died (again) shortly after it's first appearance.A zombie-mutant dog? Damn, I wish to read your book.
A zombie-mutant dog? Damn, I wish to read your book.
Maybe I'll upload it somewhere when It's done and edited.
Damn right you will! And we will be the first to buy it and read it!
Why do you have to kill anyone? Oh! I know! Kill your inner critic! Then try and ressurect her, badly, and you too can have a creepy zombie-mutant thing! :D
Finally got over (if barely) 2000 words for today. I think I'll take a break now. Or maybe I should try to figure out what the genre of my story is...
Or something that I would interpret as a zombie-mutant-thing (while reading the story from the view of your little alien character) which then turns out to be a bunch of animals freshly escaped from a dust bin covered with the last party weekend's half eaten chips, döner or salad.Lovely idea, but I kinda think that mutant zombies don't exactly fit my story...
I updated my final word count for yesterday at 11:59 last night. I'm not sure if I'm pleased or annoyed.
Anyone else is planning to join on tonight's Write-In? I've got sweets and I hope we get to see the viking chipmunks once again.
When?
In twenty mins more or less, I suppose you're in my time zone, so 20:00
Sure. I hope there's anything I can use in the actual novel this time.
The theme of the week is dialogue. Dialogue is great :D
My novel runs on dialouge. Mostly one of the characters explaining things about reality to the other one. They are so weird people. How did they get inside my head and decide to refuse half my plot?
Hmph. At least your characters have never completely changed your plot to an unrecognizable thing *glares at one of her characters*
Okay, ThisCat, I catched your word count and excerpt! Yayy! Looks nice, what did you work on?
Good dialogue is a great thing, and hard to write, too. I'm trying hard to write some more dialogues, because most of my story so far is descriptions, thoughts and dreams... and I guess that won't be too much fun to read. And I couldn't really work on catching up with my word count yet - I hope for tomorrow...
Eeeeeh! They read my thing!
Anyway, I wrote absolutely nothing but dialogue for this. No descriptions, no internal explanation, just spoken words. It's so easy for me.
Yes! I heard "ThisCat", my first reaction was "Finally!", the other was giggling like mad ;D
Just spoken words is incredibly easy. Don't you love it? I sure do. But it doesn't boost word count by much... so I added in a few descriptions ("he growled", "she sat up", etc, just three words can boost your count by a lot).
Hmmm, I'm curious, what was your character's reaction to "How long have you been standing there?"?
(Mine just said something along the lines of "Long enough for the sun to get from that tree to that other tree, how long is that?")
"Oh, just a few minutes." Not very exciting I guess.
Could we possibly do another 15 min. wordsprint? It helps me out a bit, and I'm currently stuck in not having any words.
Uff, today is not a good writing day. 323 words of boring dialogue - and can anybody lend me some kind of lethal weapon? I really need to kill Inner Critic, she's annoying me incredibly.
Here, have the gun from my story. It will probably not blow up in your face.
Uh... thanks...
*Shoots Inner Critic* Okay, that feels better. I shall now retire in my quarters. And probably continue writing from there.
Alright. Want another sprint at :00? *hopeful*

Sigh... why not? Writing in company makes this feel like easy and incredibly fun. If I don't start regretting the lack of sleep by week 4 I'll do it again next year. Definitely.
I do, however, sort of regret this decision every single morning. Then forget about it and decide to have a siesta in the early afternoon to make up for it.
I'm up for that. I've gotten...150 words so far for today. :(

578 for me. I want over 2000, but I don't even have the time for that before midnight.
Ah, yes, the lack of sleep. Luckily I don't need to get up too early in the mornings. I won't mind if you'd rather think about your health though.
I wrote about 1600something words today. But I need to write a few more if I ever hope to catch up with that pretty average wpd line.
Nah, my health can wait. Sleep is secondary. Although I'll probably get in deep trouble for not studying enough... oh well (aren't three hours enough, dammit?)
(Why'd you have to mention studies? It's not like my entire future's on the line or anything, right?)
Nah. Your future is writing this book. Trust me on this. ;)
I'm right... am I not?
I seriously hope not.
312, I think. I forgot where I actually started writing. I also reached the end of a prologue-y thing, and introduced what may or may not be a plot trinket. I'll find out, I guess.
Yay! Plot trinkets! I have a few. Maybe. They are: a book, a "police" badge, and a strange, magical lizard-bug thing.
Yay! Plot trinkets! I have a few. Maybe. They are: a book, a "police" badge, and a strange, magical lizard-bug thing.
I love strange magical lizard-bug things (or actually, any sort of strange magical creature things). Can it fly?
Mine is a compass. And some sort of feather badge thing.
PSSST! The signature! Jeez, how do you expect me to write down that poem if you don't update it!
Okay, the school day is over and I am ready for writing despite already writing two half-essays today. The plot has finally started! - I think.
So. As part of my story, I just made a list of a dead man's belongings. It comprises one chapter. I should probably remember that I am hypothetically writing a story for a hypothetical audience to read.
Hey, it's postmodern! If lists were good enough for Homer (Catalog of Ships, etc.), Melville (Moby-Dick), Umberto Eco (The Name of the Rose), James Joyce (I *think* Ulysses and Finnegans Wake) and Tim O'Brien (The Things They Carried), they're good enough for you.
I like lists. When I was a reporter, I used bulleted lists a lot. I think someone's belongings would say a lot about him, if they were chosen well. So count me among your hypothetical audience.

Sigh... it appears I have become addicted to group writing. Anyone want to have a word race?
Oh, thanks. :) Nice to know I'm not the only one who likes to use lists.
Sure! Never mind that I've finished pretty much all the scenes in which I kind of had an idea what was happening. I'll think of something...
I like them as far as they are not written by Theodor Fontane. Gosh, I hated "Miss Jenny Treibel" and it's far shorter than "Effi Briest". But the worst description are part of a mishapp translation of the Lord of the Rings. The translator describes every leave to smallest detail until you want to cry out loud. Afar from these examples I totally agree with Sunflower, descriptions and lists are pretty nice and are doing fine for (my) imagination.
Sorry Nimphy, no Word races this weekend. Half an hour left until bedtime and then the weekend is off. I will have to catch up on you guys, when I'm back home.
At :45?
Good night Kex! Buon viaggio!
Fine with me. (and good night, Kex, also!)
And since for once no one else is around to be bothered by it, I'll beblastingsetting music to play in the background. :P
WHY DO I ALWAYS FORGET ABOUT THE STARTING TIMES WHEN I CHOOSE THEM MYSELF?!?!
Oh, well, I'll join the next one...
Wait, so you meant to tell me that I was pounding away at my keyboard, all ALONE? Oh well, good for my word count at least.
358 words. :15, next?
:10 please? I want to make as much out of the time I have left as possible... I'm nowhere near my wordcount for the day.
And yup, you were pounding at your keyboard, all alone. And were very productive. Placebo effect, I guess?
378, exactly twenty words more. Uh... :35?
Uh. 403. Even worse. I'm really tired, and have somehow reached my daily goal, so I think I'll retire right now... the two-week-long sleep deprivation is starting to get its revenge.
329 words. Rest is good :). Hope you get plenty of it.
So, I just remembered that I said that I'd tell you all how I liked Scrivener. Heh. Okay, here goes. (Mostly, this is in comparison to Word, sorry people-who-don't-use-Word)
Good:
-I can have all that random, non-story stuff right there at the side of my screen whenever I need it. Cool!
-I can have goals for my word count at the bottom of the screen
-I can move chapters and stuff around, because they don't have to be all in a row, in the same document.
-Dang it, that corkboard thing is just cool looking.
-You can see what the most common words you use are, and a bunch of other weird statistics
Bad:
-No Autocorrect! (At least that I can find. :P) That's probably my biggest complaint...
-I can't see how many words a particular tiny section is just by highlighting it.
-It's harder to format. I haven't figured out how to change the default font, so if I don't manually change it every time I open a new thing, it annoys me.
-The Search function is weird. I can't jump down to the next instance, like in Word.
Overall, I like it.
Okay, so for some weird reason I'm leading in the word count. I've either only written rubbish, or am an incredibly fast writer. I'll opt for a mix of the two, but I'll choose to believe it's mostly the second, until NaNoWriMo is over at least. I'm mainly here to gloat, and make y'all understand my pure awesomeness.Do not remind me how sadly I am lagging behind. :'( *is still at 0 words for today*
I'm also here to ask how are things going.
Do not remind me how sadly I am lagging behind. :'( *is still at 0 words for today*
Story-wise, I have a conversation to finish and then I need to figure out where to go next...which is proving hard to do. I should probably also sort my scenes into chronological order.
I've actually been waiting for a day when all I would do is write, but for some reason all my Saturdays have suddenly become inordinately busy. OH WELL get to writing, me.
Update: Okay, apparently I can't even finish the conversation, because it involves coming up with a clever plan and I can't come up with one. I guess I'll just jump straight into some action, because people have mostly been standing around snarking, and figure out what they figured out later.
If I may voice my humble opinion, a foolsih plan is often the most interesting to read. Clever plans that have a chance of succeding are not - even if they do not succeed. A stupid plan is always more interesting, so go for improvisation and ridiculousness! A seemingly foolish plan that ultimately works, either because of dumb luck or because there was something so ingeniously clever (surprise or not) that no one would have ever expected it.
I hate to admit it, but in the last days writing has become incredibly hard for me. I tried so hard to catch up with the desired word count, but it's not so much fun anymore. And it's getting harder each day to neglect other activities like reading. How are you doing?

Behind my spdesired word count, to, but still having fun, sort of. Anyone wants to do a quick word sprint before I go to sleep?
Uh, sure, why not. *shoves essays away into corner*
:10? Or do you prefer :15?
:10's fine.
Yesterday I introduced my Italian teacher to the concept of NaNoWriMo and the YWP. She looked very enthusiastic about it. Today she asked me to also talk about it to the class, and to my surprise they were also interested. Some apparently had already been writing short stories for fun. A girl also dreams of writing a novel, and I had to promise her I would tell her when Camp NaNo begins, or she wouldn't shut up. Then, when I told them I was also doing NaNo, everyone wanted to read my book. I was both happy and incredibly embarrassed, and tried to tell them that I was writing in English to back down, but they just decided they'd run the text through Google Translate. I think I even blushed a little. Just the tiniest little bit, I don't blush! But yeah. Really happy right now, and next year I'm probably going to force all of the class to also do YWP - who knoowwss, maybe it will even become a thing in our school! Meanwhile, the Italian teacher already has some plans on the class writing an ebook, one that will get contributes by every one of us. Hehehe...
Oh, I'm also behind with my word count. Third Week. Ugh. Now I get all that stuff about The Wall, The Swamp of Despair, etc.
Someone up for a word sprint?
Sure, that is if you're still up for it. Um... :45 or :50?
:45?
EDIT: Okay, I didn't receive confirmation, so :50?
Uh, yeah. I was trying to stop myself from constantly refreshing pages.
Not a good day. 304. But hey, 304 is better than nothing!
357, which seems to be my average. And of course, having some words is better than having none!
So, what is your total word count? Mine is currently sitting at... 29.700 according to NaNo, 29.600 according to Scrivener. I choose to believe NaNo.
9221 (or 9121) words behind you. :'(
The word count thing is weird, though. Usually when I use different programs the difference is within 10-20 words, but a hundred word difference? Do you use a lot of hyphenated words or something?
I should probably ask what hyphenated means...
Twenty-three, twenty-four, twenty-five...
Words that use hyphens, or these things: -
Twenty-three white-tailed jack-rabbits.
Words (or phrases) that use hyphens, or these things: -
Ah, hyphens... Those are probably just about my favorite thing ever, so I was so mad when I discovered that word doesn't count them separately - but that's one on the joys of writing by hand, I guess! I can count words however I want! (It's not cheating.)
Oh, but I'm like six days behind on my word count because all my teachers decided to assign homework now. Though I suppose getting unbearable urges to read doesn't help, either. It's even more annoying when I consider the fact that I actually really like what I'm writing and I've been going to bed earlier because I've begun getting up at 4:30 in the morning. This week has been a mess but I will succeed!
I also use em-dashes too much in my writing. For clarification (or at least providing enough pointy straight lines to get all the forumites impaled):

So apparently I need almost 3000 words a day to finish on time. Welp. I'll just ignore the guests come Thanksgiving.
That's my plan, too!
Heh, at the moment I'm leading in the word count race! ;D (Well I guess you others haven't updated yours yet, but still I'm happy.)
WE ALL CAN WRITE MORE. 8) Now that NaNoWriMo is approaching the end, I find it much easier to sit down and try hard than a week before. Someone up for a sprint at :30?
422. I need a break now, I've been sitting at my desk for too long. How long will you be online? Maybe we could do some more sprints from (21):00 on?
437! Not bad at all!
Yay! I got 330 and I'm happy with that. What I'm not happy with is the fact that halfway through my writing last night my handwriting suddenly got really bad and hasn't yet recovered.
Aw. Maybe the 20000+ words you've been writing are finally catching up with you. (My handwriting gradually becomes a sort of scrawl the more I write.) If your hand doesn't hurt, though, I guess it's not too bad as long as you can still read your own handwriting. Hopefully you can get back to your normal handwriting soon.
I've written exactly 19 words today. I should probably do something about that.
Well my hand hurts now. Strangely my handwriting has improved.
PS: ThisCat and Fen Shen, I shall join you. I, too, have lots to work on.
Aw, come on, Nimphy, you have the highest word-count out of all of us! :P *tries to be inspiring*
I'm holding out hope that I'll somehow be able to write ~3500 words a day, but realistically I won't be able to devote any more time than I currently have been to writing. We'll see.
2866 words for now, and plan on getting to 3k for the day! Plus...
I have FINALLY reached that line! That pretty "You should be at this point" line!
Yes! :D
*stares sadly at own line*
But anyway, you're reaching the end word-count-wise. I'm curious; how are you doing story- or plot-wise?
It's supposed to get easier in the last week, isn't it? ??? Well, I'm not feeling that effect. I'm still below that line and I'm sadly running out of ideas. I still have a bit of plot to write, but that won't be enough for another 10.000 words... :-\
I did it! Yaaay!
I got 50,298 words together and my story is not finished. And never will be. My plot is horrible, characters boring and the writing in general uninspirational. I'm just not good at writing long texts. :( I will not probably take part in NaNoWrimo next year. This time was just so...stressful. It was like second job that took time from things I wanted to really do.
Nevertheless I am glad I succeed. It would been even worse if I gave up. If anything it was good practice for writing other things. I have always been bad at writing dialogue and I felt that it went lot better than normally. :)
Shout out to other winners and to those who still continue writing!

*eye twitch*
So you were writing too, and you didn't partake in the fun?! And let me think I was actually good at this?
Oh, right. I'm just 1400 words away from victory! I wish I could write them today, but I have a physics test tomorrow. Dammit!
*eye twitch*At least it's the best kind of test! :D

Physics and calculus were pretty much all I enjoyed in high school.
Important emergency post.Yesssss! You did it!
Holy. Troll. The NaNo word counter has reached 50k. It's turned a pretty purple. It's got the word winner on it. I wrote 50k words. I have novel with a plot. The NaNo crew is apparently cheering for me, together with the dinosaur plushie in a cute video. I'm just staring at the screen, laughing every once in a while with an incredulous expression. I won this thing? I won NaNo!! I wrote a novel! Which still needs a few more thousand words, but I wrote a novel!!! There are not enough exlamation points in the universe for this. Forget about Physics! I could get a 2 and still be happy! I won NaNoWriMo!!
(Everyone hurry up! I believe in you! A few word sprints and you'll get there!)
You can do it Fen Shen! Just stick in some more descriptions of the wind blowing over the grass in the plains or something.
Yesssss! You did it!
Unfortunately a few word sprints won't cut it for me, but I'm happy to have gotten as much as I did. My plot was okay, I guess, but I was really running out of inspiration.
On the other hand, I've unearthed a mysterious folder labelled "writing" on my computer. It contains a lot of weird, vaguely poetic half-stories (along with files that contain only a single line each) that I apparently wrote in the beginning of the year. Maybe I'll start working on one of those.
I finally reached the "you should be here" line. Yay. (I like comparing our word count graphs. You guys have fairly straight ones but mine jumps around everywhere.) Good night.
Uh... I feel really bad right now. I was going on with the writing and for some reason a character of mine just lost his mind. Completely. Aww, I liked him a lot! Guess that's what I get for brutally murdering his mentor off-screen, though...
I'm sorry. I had to laugh at the way you wrote that.
You'll be glad to know I'm a winner now! Now I get to edit, which is my absolute favorite part of the writing process but one I've only had the chance to enjoy once before. In seventh grade. With a short story.
EEK! So glad for you, Steller! You won! Congratulations! You do know you'll have to share your story with us, now, right? Because you'll be forced to! We're already in three, now let's just hope that Fen Shen may make it too in the 26 hours she has left. We believe in her, don't we?
There's nothing to laugh at that (but which part made you laugh? I may finally understand this 'humourism' thing, and how it works, so tell me please)! I like him and he just started seeing things that shouldn't be there and losing sense of reality, darn it! Oh, well, I can see to that he beomces sane again, in some time. ;D

Sorry for the double post, but really I couldn't care less... I did it! ;D *happydance*Four winners now, have we?

I shall revive this thread. Because it's March. And next month Camp NaNo starts and I'm already excited for it! Who's up for some moooooore writiiiiiiing?Me! Memememe! *excitedly waves hands* I'm only aiming for 25k words during this camp though, but since I'm going to write in english it felt better with a lower word count. It takes more time for me to formulate my sentences in english than in swedish. Although I bet my characters will start talking japanese just to screw me over since they know I don't know any japanese!

I was considering a private cabin, but I'd also love to get to meet other writers, so I think I'll choose the random cabin option. I get to talk to you guys on this thread, anyways, so meeting other writers would be a nice change.
To be honest, I haven't really understood how the cabins work. :-[
But I'd like to share with people who I know at least a bit... so, mith, do you still have my NaNo name?
I'm aiming for ~500 words on my new writing project and at least half an hour of revision on my NaNo novel each day - we'll see if that's a concept that works for me.
Part of me thinks that would be nice, and the other part of me is completely terrified of virtually rooming with internet strangers and ending up just forever lurking away from the message board. :\
(she says, while posting on a publicly visible fan-forum)
I got the 50k in November, but I'm thinking I should aim for 30 or even 25-20k this time because school is way busier this time of year.
Add me to the list of people who don't understand cabins.
I think cabins are basically supposed to be mini-writing groups to provide encouragement/ competition. So what we have here, but on that site. I think. You're very much correct. My group failed miserable about both things last year, but I pulled through anyway! I can't decide if I want a more active group though, this community will probably be great at making me procrastinate as it is xD
For me, the first day was good - my daily goal is 667 words, and I wrote 665. Yesterday I didn't find time at all (thanks to stupid bureaucracy and nice friends) and today I'm zero motivated. Not a good start, especially since the next days will be crammed with family meetings and the like. :-\
And also, what is more important, I'm still having fun. :)That's the most important with the NaNo, to my mind :)
And I've finally started editing my november novel for real.*Look carefully at her november novel. Should work on it*
*Curious* Am I the only one, more than two months before the next NaNo, who feels this urgent need to write but-it's-not-the-moment-keep-that-for-november ?

There is at least one other ;) I'm also like this:Who will win ? ::)
Brain: No, you can't make your NaNo SSSS fanfiction
Me: But... but...
Brain: No
Me: technically, NaNo rules allow fanfictions...
Brain: No!
Me: Awwww...
First mail from the NaNo (French organization) this morning. May it be considered as a sign saying it's time to take my project, cut it up and be sure I'll have a plan with as less gap as possible before november ? (Me, procrastinating ?)
It does sound like a sign of something like that! If you plan thoroughly, there is probably a greater chance of success, right? (Though perhaps procrastinating is not for the best)Checking the playlist for writing : a good beginning. Next time, checking what should be into the different chapters. And the plan. Of course. Ahem.

I'm curious, will you all make a plan before starting this NaNo or not ? :) I assume it may be more difficult to do it without one because we only have one month ?Hello, I hate making plan before writing but trying to do it last year was a potential cause of good results.

Eep! NaNo is coming and I have no idea what story I want to write! I was thinking of trying a mystery, but I'm not sure if the characters feel alive enough to make it work. You still have a month and half to take a decision, all is all right if you have too many possibilities :)
I don't know, that's just me ;DNo, I understand ^^
Ooh, yes, anyone here who wants to add me as a buddy is more than welcome! My username is the same as it is here: Ana Nymus. Just let me know who you are here so I know who I'm talking to ;D
Nearly the same for me, Mélusine Gwenhwyfar, with my first avatar here :)I added both of you! My username there is Bookwormbeth6 if anyone wants to add me. :)
Please don't pay attention to... errr... what happened last year. I have a good explication for that.
I keep being like "I don't knooww"... This will be taking place during a big fic exchange I want to participate in, is it possible that I will be able to handle both at once?!And if you write your fic for your NaNo ? (Let me guess : not enough pages for the fic regarding to the Nano's rules ?)
(No)
(That would be a terrible idea)
But maybe it wouldn't hurt to try anyway. :Va
And if you write your fic for your NaNo ? (Let me guess : not enough pages for the fic regarding to the Nano's rules ?)
I'm also still not sure if I'll take part again. On the one hand, I won't have much time and my novel from last year is still uneditedCome with us ! :D It will be funny ! Doing it with several persons brings you the envy to write more :)sitting in a dark cupboard and crying because I don't take care of it. On the other hand, it was so much fun last year and I have a tiny collection of weird ideas... so we'll see. My NaNo name is Nalanna if I remember correctly, if you want to add me.
I would so love to do this, but I can't see it happening right now. It's all November :) Everybody is welcome !
I am already writing almost every day for Shared Story, but Oh...
We shall see.
When does it start?
Come with us ! :D It will be funny ! Doing it with several persons brings you the envy to write more :)And my novel from last years need some re-writing parts which hadn't be re-written yet too for *Coughs* reasons.
and the only reason I write is to beat everybody.
I think I've decided that I will take part this year even though it's probably a bad idea.
..and my novel from last year will not be edited. It was a monstrosity of a thing with medieval technology, magic that turns people into not-werewolves, kids who dream of being rock stars, a little town in the middle of nowhere with an economy based solely on tourism, an animal rebellion against a music store, flying rats, and a group bordering on secret-society-hood. It was an interesting thing to write, but not worth trying to salvage.
Particularly since pieces of it are scattered around in just about every possible medium and quite possibly lost by now. :)
Added you! :)
I totally know what you mean about your novel not being worthy of salvaging. I've learned so much about writing in the past couple of years, and that makes it glaringly obvious just how useless it is to try to make the trash I've written before worth it. But I'm okay with it. NaNoWriMo is always good fun, and it does help me get into better writing habits.
(That said, your novel from last year does sound really interesting to write and very interesting to try to explain. It kind of sounds like a NaNoWriMo pep talk, actually: "Have you always wanted to write a novel with magic that turns people into not-werewolves, kids who dream of being rock stars, an animal rebellion against a music store, flying rats, and a group bordering on secret-society-hood?? Now you have an excuse! PARTICIPATE IN NANOWRIMO!!" At any rate, it sounds pretty zany and like a pretty exciting writing adventure.)
Also... I'm not quite sure if I'll ever finish my 2012 novel (which is the only one I've ever considered editing). Sometimes I'm sure I'll do it, and sometimes I'm sure I won't. At any rate, it's going to have to be completely rewritten again, this time with an almost entirely different cast and almost the entire middle of the story changed completely. It's pretty confusing to explain, but perhaps it is less so in comparison to yours. :D
I was at a reading from Cornelia Funke yesterday - I don't know how well-known she is outside of Germany, she writes fantasy and humorous books for children and young adults. There was also an opportunity to ask her questions, so I wanted to know how she is coping with writer blocks. She said she would go for a walk and then just write an alternative scene, and that she sometimes needs up to 14 rewrites to find the final version.
So even the professionals need to edit again and again and again... :)
And I wrote a list of stories I have (that I could think of) and the tally came to 71 (everything from short stories to whole series, and vague ideas to well-developed ones).... *Goes back to curl herself up in a ball in the shadows*
Is she the one who wrote those Inkheart books?Yes, that's her. :)
... *Goes back to curl herself up in a ball in the shadows*
Jethan, your blog sounds interesting! *starts reading it*
Ha ! :D The NaNo website is back again, we can create our novel !
And best of all... procrastinate on the Reference Desk!N... no. I won't do that. (Last year I was doing my first NaNo but also working in not very good conditions, stressing for having to move, and had not enough confidence in my english.
(Small confession: the place has taught me how to amputate a finger, survive if you're lost in a cave, what traveling the Silk Road on foot is like and how to start the end of the world from Norway.)
(Disclaimer: I have nothing against Norway.)
Errr... Reassure me, you don't plan to amputate any finger, isn't it ?

Oh... it had to be done, that character would not have survived if I hadn't done that. Sure, I could have not put them in the horrible situation to begin with, but she's one of my favourite characters ever so obviously I was going to put her through really awful things. As authors do.I'm sure your character loves you too. (You should meet one of my friends. She had done worst than that and would say the same, she "had to do it".)

More important question : will you play with us during this NaNo, Laufey ? :)
Ooooh I might, I might, sounds fun! I'll go check the site, let's see how many forumites I can find! :DI'm asking because I might think to send a special postcard for the NaNo and might be wondering how many I would need :)

So whose ready for the writing frenzy? I know I'm kinda ready.Well, not exactly... I still have to do the plan and I hate doing that so everything else is better to do. But I have a notebook, a playlist, I know where my characters are, I know them even if some of them aren't completely ready. What could go wrong ? :)
I have my notebook, pens, some candies, and tea ready to go.
But do I have my main character's name? Nope...not quite ready.
I'm pretty sure I dealt with this last year by referring to characters as the Girl, the Bird, the Shopkeeper, etc or just with respective pronouns.Sometimes characters have a name, and months/years after it's not the good name anymore. I can find at least four characters... no, wait, five... six... well. I know that :) It's not an obstacle when you want to write.
DancingRanger, I think I don't have added you on the NaNo page ?
!! I'd really love to participate in NaNoWriMo, but I've been saying that for the past 3 years, and so novels remain unwritten...I think a writing community here at/in the forum would be fantastic to be a part of! 8)
Hushpiper, awesome spreadsheet! How do I go about using it? I am not very technical so I assume it's very simple but I just don't see it :P
I've decided that with my terrible writer's block and indecision about what story to write, and the story I was considering writing completely changing on me into something I couldn't comprehend....Well, I decided I would be better off writing a giant worldbuilding book and basically planning out a some of my major series and other stories and fixing them to some coherent timeline in Thren and then detailing the societies in those stories. Because, I can still ramble about my stories, but it's impossible for me to write a story. Probably because I'm getting closer to having a hundred stories, and they really need to have their worldbuilding and Thren's history and timeline sorted out so they aren't just floating around messily but so they can be condensed and contained and categorized. With alliteration, apparently. I'm calling my project the Secrets of Thren, and I guess I'm a nano rebel now since it's not really a novel, it's more like behind-the-scenes stuff.
I think it's going to be a giant mess.
*hi fives Jethan* I'm doing something similar! So we can be rebels together (although is it really rebelling? It's still a work of fiction... ah, who cares? As long as we have fun ;D)
And wow a hundred stories is a lot. Yeah, it's probably best to get those all organized in time before you have a go at them. I look forward to hearing about the many secrets of Thren! ^-^
*double high fives*
I'm probably also going to be doing something similar. Either that or I'm going to be doing an interactive fiction thing (less likely as time goes by), so rebel either way.
Side note: coincidentally, the "name"/working name/who knows of one of the characters whose world I may or may not be building is Thren.
Well first you've gotta go to File > Make a copy... to make your own copy of the spreadsheet. Then at the end of each day, just type in how many words you wrote that day in the green box and it will magically calculate for you! The box above the green shows your goal for that day (which adjusts based on what you wrote previous days), and the box below shows how much more or less you wrote than that goal. Play around with putting random numbers in, it's very shiny!
Oh hi. I finally made a NaNo account (I'm sure you can all guess the nick I used).Yaaay, writing sessions ! :D With a lot of tea ! (Or hot chocolate.)
I'll be translating a novel, how should I categorize that?
Soon soon soon... Are all of you ready ? :)
Soon soon soon... Are all of you ready ? :)
Soon soon soon... Are all of you ready ? :)
I'm never ready for NaNoWriMo, it always sneaks up on me and suddenly I'm in the NaNovoid...Hey, but... yes, I don't know who you are on the NaNo page.
Soon soon soon... Are all of you ready ? :)
Well, my first NaNoWriMo ever... And I'm out of ideas!!
I had one story that I thought I could write, but I decided it would look so much better in webcomic format, and now I'm left with no inspiration whatsoever... D:
I might as well write whatever comes to my mind when I open the new document...
Good luck to all of us!
You could try scripting the webcomic? And there's a bunch of us just doing worldbuilding-type writing, so that might also be something useful for comics-to-be (that is the projected future of 99% of my projects, anyway...).
I thought about doing something like this... It's just that my perfeccionism insists that I must write a COMPLETE novel with a perfect story and nothing less.
But I think I'll need to kick my perfeccionism aside and just go with it. Maybe I'll do some worldbuilding too, I really like the idea. :D
It's just that my perfeccionism insists that I must write a COMPLETE novel with a perfect story and nothing less.During the NaNo, you can't :) Or you're really, really brilliant. Just write ! You'll have a lot of time to make the story perfect after, you'll have the story written ! :D
I am not yet ready! Since I'm going to continue the story I wrote during last NaNo I have to read through it before I can begin. 145 pages!Could you just read the last pages/chapters, just to remember where you stopped, in order to begin ?
...why didn't I start earlier? ;_;
Soon soon soon... Are all of you ready ? :)
*Had begun to write her plan properly because in small handwriting in a small notebook it wasn't the best. Two days ago.)smaller handwriting in a larger notebook is so much better, I can testify ;) (it was also *even neater* which serves to make things easier to read)

(I would blame procrastination *Had begun to write her plan properly because in small handwriting in a small notebook it wasn't the best. Two days ago. Hadn't finished despite it's so simple to do it...*)
I'm not ready. I have a main character, and everything else is going to have to come from listening to the Halo soundtrack. My worldbuilding project is now my back-up plan if I get really stuck. Still 2 hours before I can write!
Good luck everyone, write happily!
does anyone know a good writing tool that would save my files online (in case I change devices)? I'm using google drive but it's less than perfect u.uI don't know of any, but if you find one let me know I've had some massive issues with Drive and long stories.

only problem is that I can't hook up both the drive and a keyboard to my tablet if I ever want to use that...FWIW, there are keyboards with a builtin USB hub. (And separate USB hubs, too, of course.)
I have discovered that I am terrible at writing make out-scenes. How does people even make out? I should know, I did have a boyfriend once and we kinda made out but I only learned that it was really disgusting and horrible and now I have to write about it as if it's something good. Why do I do this to myself? xD *glares towards story*I'm sorry I can't help you.
I'm whining here because no one wants to hang out in the chat with me...
Good luck everyone doing NaNo this year! I hope everything goes well!Thank Vi !

Go check, and while you're there, join us! <3

I completely forgot about this. You're not too late ! :) It would just means you would have to write a little more during a few days, it's still possible !
I was already dubious about doing it in the middle of college apps, and am too late now.
I will cheer form the sidelines though!
...Next year I swear.
I have just started for the first time, and I'm utterly terrified. Why terrified ?
Why terrified ?
I'm terrible at sticking around and finishing what I tell myself I can do. Usually I chicken out and do not start at all, but now I've gone and done it. It feels like there's no going back. I've started, so I must keep going until the end.I made my first NaNo last year, and it was indeed... something completely strange the first days :) But it's a good adventure ! I was absolutely sure I wasn't able to write like that, with a rhythm, and doing it only in order to say to the friend who was always telling me to try "See ? It's not for me, I have tried but I don't like it."
Which is exciting, but also a completely new to me.

And even if you don't complete, at least you did something.I couldn't say it better.
Seems like my this year's story happens in the Westfjords of Iceland and is based on Icelandic mythology. I've only written mystery/horror once before this so I'm having the time of my life! :D"but may be missing out on a detail or two", ahem ^^° It seems... interesting, Laufey. Not usually my readings, but it may be the way you're talking about your characters which make it interesting :)
So far I've introduced six characters to the story, but more are to come. In order of appearance: Elena, Anne, Timo, Leah, Inge and Jonathan. Situation of each character according to what's been written out so far (= no spoilers) in the cut.Spoiler: show

Hahah maybe I'll post some snippets here once I've written the thing and edited it! That'll take at least until December though I'm afraid, hopefully not longer (my last year's NaNo project is still waiting for me to get to editing it)...noooo, post all the snippets already! \o/ I'd post some, but they're in Swedish :P
I try to end my chapters after around 10 pages. Since the story's gonna be thrown up on the interwebs after I'm done (or at least sort of done) I don't want too long walls of text.I had defined my chapter by... how to say, time moments ? Every chapter has three parts inside, and it wasn't done on purpose. This one will be not enough balanced, the first part is big but I absolutely need it, the two others will be shorter, and even if I have already wrote 2500 words today (I began this chapter today.) I'm still in this first part T_T

I'm rather bad at judging what action will happen and how long it will take, so I seldom write chapters in my first draft, I just write the narrative and figure I will sort out what sections should become chapters in the editing process.
Four more people joined the story during today's writing, still a few more for a whole set and then the game can begin!I'm pretty sure it won't be so funny after, but I love to read the stats of your characters ^^Spoiler: show
Ugh I kinda want to write a lot now. I haven't done nano in a few years and it's been several months since I actually worked on a story, so the idea of writing really appeals to me right now. I just... those two uni papers due at the end of the month... ughhhhhhhh. Why couldn't nano be in july or something :-\You have NaNo camps, in... maybe April, and July ;) (If I remember correctly.)

If the 50k is too much for you, you can always rebel and decide on your own goal, there are a lot of people who do that and use the NaNo-spirit just to get a push into writing. And as Mélusine said, there's NaNo Camps in April and July if you want an easier challenge! (or harder, since you can set the Word Goal to 100k if you want too)
My cast is pretty big, and it's getting bigger for every day!*Looks at her four characters in the same place at this point of the novel* Indeed...
My cast is pretty big, and it's getting bigger for every day!
Of course, a bunch of the named characters are sort of in the background - people the protagonists meet in the bakery or sailors who are mentioned once. And one of my protagonists has eight first cousins who show up on occasion, so that upped the count considerably.This. If I have to count how many characters are acting the more, I'll lost easily half of mine.
Today on NaNo adventure; Gilbert why did you do that?Characters... ::)
Aaand I guess this is an attempt to get myself to start writing. We'll see how far I can actually make it.You're not so far ! Good luck !
I managed to write triple my minimum for today! (It's 300 words, not that impressive -- still!)It's triple your minimum, yay ! :D
Welp the cast is now together!Spoiler: show
Also, I have reached a word count of 13,000 words, thanks to the beautiful sheet that was linked earlier in the thread <3HA ! I'm not the only one to have... errr, more words than what is expected ! :D
Welp the cast is now together! (etc)
Meanwhile, I'm doing something very odd with mine - it's a series of short stories telling the tale of the hero from an outside perspective, through journals, radio, military dispatches, exposition by the big bad... it's kinda fun :P
Disappearing doors... oh dear. *_* (Will you be doing anything with this story when it's finished? And by that I mean posting it where I can read it.)
!!! That sounds awesome. It also sounds difficult. Are you finding it more of a challenge than a more straightforward narrative?
I haven't thought about that yet to be honest, most of my NaNo projects just end up being quietly buried when I can't be bothered to edit them... but I guess I could try to better my ways this time. :P

Also, I have reached a word count of 13,000 words, thanks to the beautiful sheet that was linked earlier in the thread <3Whoa, that's impressive! And now I have to go back through and look for this sheet you mentioned, because I have a cobbled-together spreadsheet so I can sort of keep track of my word count (because I'm subtracting the words I had already written pre-November). It's working, but it's not pretty.
Hmm... I started writing something but now I have no idea where I want to go with this, and I want to start it all over with another story...
Ugghhh, my first NaNoWriMo ever and I'm stuck in the first week! D:

So. You can't write when you're babysitting a 5 years old. Only 971 words since this morning, including between midnight and 1AM. I have four hours left and guests are at home...
911 words, but I'm trying to remedy that now! Hanging out in this forum doesn't really help though... I'm also not really sure where my characters are going now, they've screwed up the plot a bit too much! I can fix it, I'm just not sure how to get there yet xDI'm getting back three of them.
Only 971 words
Unacceptable!!!I agree. 1690 is better. I'm sure I can write more.
I agree. 1690 is better. I'm sure I can write more.If a character from the former generation stop giving me informations I can't use right now.
USE IT ANYWAY! One of my characters had a BIG infodump today! Made me get lots of words, but I'm gonna have to trim it before I publish the story xDI can't, it's something which had happened more than twenty years ago, and none of my characters who are here for the moment can know that. Actually, nearly nobody can know that *Looks at the character who keep showing things* Thank, you're not helping right now, do you know it ?
Let your character infodump all over your story, great fun!
Also reached today's goal and I now hold a word count of 16,000!

Nearly 15900 for me. My chapter isn't finished, my evening neither.
Today's been an ugh day. I wrote 14 words a minute ago, but I haven't had the motivation today. Nor did I feel good either. . .Aww, it can be really hard to write when you don't feel good! Take care of yourself, and you can always write more words tomorrow.
Ahh, you all write so much!!Hooray for story ideas! And don't let anyone else's word count worry you...any words you write will be words you hadn't written before, and that's what matters.
I finally had an idea for my story, and I hope things work from now on...
Today is moving SO SLOW, let me procrastinate here in the forum!Second complicated-busy day. I may have ran here and there during all the day and written 300 words before I had to left this morning :( *Feels... not productive. Slow. Argh*)
I've only written 1,000 words so far, a bit from today's goal of 2,700 words! Still 2½ hour left of today so I might make it, I just feel awfully uninspired.
500 words today. Hooray! My exchange fic is halfway to the 1k-minimum. I'm really happy about this.I'm happy to see you're enjoying your NaNo :)
I'm happy to see you're enjoying your NaNo :)
NaNo's personal aim for yesterday : done. (Mmmh, it's not the good word, but let's pretend it could be because I can't find it.)
NaNo's personal aim for today : huuuuuuu, let me have tea before all and I'll go back writing soon.
I definitely am! : D
The "let's pretend it could be good words" is something I sympathize with... I hope you'll do well with writing today!
Iiii... discovered that there is a write-in in my town. And I'm going tomorrow. I'm so nervous!

6374 words today is too much, I'M TIRED ! (But happy.)Dang, that's impressive! I spent the whole day helping my friend move so I haven't written anything yet, I have to get on that.

I'm sadly lagging behind a bit with my word count but nevertheless this is the situation now.Poor Jonathan, an identical statut...Spoiler: show
NaNoWriMo has eaten my soul, anyone?3341 and yes it's eating your soul. I would like to make 1000 more... *Will see a friend tomorrow, write with an other friend Friday, and have a brunch Sunday, and is too slow in her chapters, and haaaaaaa ! - Loves the NaNo* :)
Laufey: Jonathan is dead but running around...I'm curious as to how he is not quite completely dead...And the house sounds very spooky and creepy. "Yes, there are magical rooms in here that will give you everything you want! But you can never leave...."
The best thing is that since this whole story is based on Icelandic mythology, there's a kinda sorta logical explanation to everything... but only if you know the lore behind, and few of my characters do. :D You're right about the house - or its owner more like - doing exactly that, but it's not going to stop there. And it's definitely not willing to let anyone leave, ever.
Current stats of people, or the ones that changed yesterday:Spoiler: show
Laufey: The magic and folklore sounds really intriguing, but I have a feeling your book would be too tense for me to read. Sure, it sounds fun to lock a bunch of characters into a haunted house, but...then they're locked into a haunted house and they are DOOOOOOOOOMED. ::)
Laufey, I don't know if you're fully aware of this, but we're SO CURIOUS now ! :D
My aim is to reach 46666 words today. It must be possible. In theory. If I start writing.
I had also been somewhat optimistically hoping to get a lot of writing done today, but for now it seems I'll be stuck writing papers instead.I'm good for nothing today :/ I'll try. Later. Maybe in an hour or two...
Laufey, I don't know if you're fully aware of this, but we're SO CURIOUS now ! :DWow, your word count goal is twice what mine is! I'm at 21,565 now and I'd like to do another 1-2k today.

Whooo, I have crossed the 25 000 words mark! Halfway into the book, so I'll do a thorough rundown on all the characters statuses
Excuse me, but I have to scream it somewhere : I HAVE 50017 WORDS RIGHT NOW ! :D
*Goes back to her plan, afraid of not being in the middle yet*
Also, I'm curious about your searches. Am I correct in that they make you seem like some kind of murderer?
Whooo, I have crossed the 25 000 words mark! Halfway into the book, so I'll do a thorough rundown on all the characters statuses:Ooh, halfway there! And yeah, I have a lot of writer friends who are concerned about what someone might intuit from their search histories. Since mine is full of questions like "what colors do sheep come in?" and "list of [birds/fish/trees] native to [areas with climates similar to my novel]" I'm not too concerned...I don't think any government agencies are going to come after me and make me take care of sheep.Spoiler: show

My chapters are too long. My story is too long.Where are the chocolate bar and my blanket ?
I'm late in what I expected to do. My characters can't follow some things I had on my plan because they have changed at a moment and it doesn't fit them anymore but I don't have time to fix all. My chapters are too longs. My story is too long.*hands you chocolate* I feel the same way about mine. My total word count (including what I had written before November) is over 100,000 words now. I've been struggling to write the last few days because I wrote what I think is the actual END of my novel...and now I don't know what to do. I want to go back and tweak things (because I definitely have things in there that didn't go according to plan), but I also want to finish NaNoWriMo first. I've been writing little scenes that aren't really important to the main story, but I haven't kept up with the word count goals.Where are the chocolate bar and my blanket ?
I got so much done today, I'm amazed at myself!*Takes a look at your NaNo page* WOW ! :D

(http://i1375.photobucket.com/albums/ag444/Fimbulvarg/ship1_zpsnszhvrjt.png)I'll consider it was a good idea to repeat "Join us, join us !" ;)
I wrote TWO complete stories! And one of them was like four pages! Méluuuuu, I'm so happy! (Still!)
How to know when your brain is tired with the NaNo : you begin to make mistakes in the name of several characters -__-
*Sends good vibes to everybody who's still writing* :)
I... just doubled the NaNo goal ? O_oThis is madness. What have I done ?
Wait, wait, hold on, here. Do you mean you reached 100k?! Or you just set a goal to reach 100k?Iiiiiii... :-[ It's not my fault ! I'm at 102477 right now, in the middle of my chapter 18/20, with one traumatized character and an other who will have to speak soon but does't want to remember certain things he'll have to explain. Haha T_T
Either way, I am impressed.
I'm so close to reaching 20K, which is double what my "wishlist" goal was, ahhhhhHHH. I hope everyone else is feeling good about what they've managed to get done too. Only a few days left! /o/
I... just doubled the NaNo goal ? O_owell finally!
well finally!Like if it was expected ! (It wasn't.)
congrats to you too, even though you still have 2 chapters to write ;)
And, at half an hour of the end of November here, I FINISHED MY NOVEL ! :D *End of the auto-congratulation moment for her second NaNo's goal. Authorizes herself to fall on her bed, arms open. Tired. Happy*

Yay!Everyone of my characters is deadI mean I finished the story!
Have a good sleep, dear Mélu. ;p And congratulations! Double NaNo is a super accomplishment.Thank and congratulations for doubling your original goal, Yuu :D That's a victory too !
I wrote 200 words at lunch today, so that means I'm officially over the 20k mark, which was double my original 10k goal. I'm happy.
(http://i.imgur.com/eJBJ5vj.jpg)And congratulations Laufey ! :D For finishing your story, of course

Confettilations (https://ssssforum.com/thingies/confetti.html) to everyone who finished their novel / won the NaNo / did a good job!So, congratulations to you too, P__, for joining the NaNo for your first time !
Anyway, enough about that! I was wondering if anyone wanted to continue having writing sessions in the ssss writers-chat (http://webchat.quakenet.org/?channels=ssss_writers). It's mostly been me and Nimphy this month, but it helped me a lot with writing and it would be fun to continue with it. We can do word wars, sprints, prompt writing or just keep eachother company while we work at editing our drafts or writing other stories. Details can be worked out later, I'm just curious if anyone would be even the slightest interested :P
I am so going to regret this but yeah.
I'm in.
I like pain.
Ooh, color me intrigued! This sounds fun. I probably shouldn't commit to another project when I already have an ongoing fic (and a spin-off fic developing from it, and an actual novel I should really start editing...) but I might make an attempt.
I'm in. I mean... because of course I am.
Okay, so, Camp NaNoWriMo is starting up in April. Windfighter and I thought this would be a good time to start a SSSS/aRTD 100-prompt challenge.
How it works:
-Write 100 SSSS or aRTD fanworks, one for each of the 100 prompts.
-Works can be any length/format, as long as it's writing.
-The list of 100 prompts that we will be using is provided below.
*Though you can use a different prompt list if you want, or replace some of the prompts here if you prefer, it doesn't matter much really. The point is to create 100 fanworks.
-You don't have to finish it in a month! You can take as long as you need. We're just going to start during Camp NaNo.
Does anyone want to join us? : DSpoiler: show
Yessss, so many people joining for our challenge, this will be awesome! Eeeeee, I want it to start now!
Since it's actually a lot of prompts, how about we start it in a week or so?Nah, this is our Camp NaNo competition, false starting is out of the question!
I'd be in if someone can explain the details to me. Rules, how and where to post, formats, all that stuff please?
Thanks, Yuuago! Given that info, I'm in. Poetry, hmmm? Did I mention that I'm really more of a poet than a prose writer....?
Can I do just 30 for Script Frenzy? 100 feels like too much for me right now, but I would like to do some writing in a community setting again.
Yessss, so many people joining for our challenge, this will be awesome! Eeeeee, I want it to start now!Yuu was right, it was easier for you to convince other people rather than me ;) It seems you'll be a lot to try this challenge ! I'm sure you'll enjoy it and will all have a lot of fun :)
I doubt most of us will make it to 100 (and I'm including myself in this). ;p Try for 30 to start, then add more if you reach it?
I... have a confession to make. I kind of started early. But-but-but even just looking at some of the prompts was enough to make ideas pop in, and I already had the whole thing written out in my head anyway, and I won't post it until the start date, I promise!
So people, getting ready for Camp NaNo? Once april roll in, I'm gonna try to sit on #ssss_writers (http://webchat.quakenet.org/?channels=ssss_writers) as much as possible (except when I'm sleeping and/or at work) so if you want some writing company you can drop by! We can do wordsprints, talk about ideas, maybe give eachother some plotbunnies if we need to, or just idle in the company of eachother as we work on our projects. As said last time, I won't do Camp NaNo. My new projects aren't ready to be written, and I have a few things on which I must focus. But I can still come and say hi and encourage the persons who will do it :)
I'm so excited about getting to start this challenge!
Well, it's the 1st over here... so here is something super short. I don't have much hope for my responses to get any longer, to be quite honest.
This is really difficult in English. I keep wondering if my sentences make sense and the grammar is correct or whether I have messed up with the meaning of a word, or the sentence structure or if the whole thing just makes your tongue trip up and spew out the words like something disgusting :-\
Anyway, I've got no idea where to dump this. If this isn't the right place, just tell me, please!Spoiler: 52.Deep in Thought (Though judging form the result it might just as well have been 30.Under the Rain) show
I don't think it was ever agreed on where to post the results of the 100-fic challenge. (Does anybody else have any thoughts on that?)
I'm going to be posting on ff.net \o/ What we did agree on what that we didn't really need to post them anywhere unless we wanted to, so... I dunno, post wherever you want! The scriptorium maybe?
No need to worry about the length, after all, there's no minimum/maximum for that. Also, your grammar and so on looks fine - I didn't see anything that looked incorrect. I don't think you have anything to worry about.:)) Happy to hear that I didn't mess up anything, then! I'll remove this to the SSSS Scriptorium with a link.

Anyway AHH I'm always so happy to see more stuff with the prologue folks < 3 So I'm very happy to see that you wrote something with them. (Oh, Aksel, I love him. And he seems very much like himself here.)
I took a look at the promts and am hooked now. Great! XDWell, I just did ::) I'd feel better if I wan't the only one!
One questtion, though: Do I have to write in order or can I do a bit of prompt-hopping?

I probably won't post mine until the end of the month, because I find myself doing little revisions every now and then.
I am pleased to announce though that my original plan of: one shots for each prompt, whatever comes to mind, has actually turned into a story. With plot. I may actually get a decent fanfic out of this, granted with lots of revision.
So far I've finished about 11 of the prompts (some relate more to their respective prompts than others), which is a little behind, but I think I'll get there. Hopefully. Maybe. We'll see.
Question for those posting their challenge fics on Ao3: I was thinking about creating a Collection on Ao3 that people can add their 100-prompt fics to. Would this be useful/would people use it?
A few advantages:
-It would keep all of the stories that people to add to it under a particular index, so that people can browse through things written specifically for this challenge, and find them easily
-Authors can add/remove works to the collection at will
-Collections always have a Rules page. The challenge guidelines and prompt table could be posted there for easy reference, and so that readers and writers who don't go on the forum would be able to take a look at it and see how to do the challenge themselves. (I've received a few questions about this. "What is this challenge I've been seeing everywhere...")

I've... finished two. But I have stuff for some exchanges that I need to work on, so. I'll take my time with this. ;p

Have you posted them anywhere yet?
ELEVEN?!
Blarg, I'm only done with eight! I better step up my game and stop procrastinating!
(Also good work everyone, from what I've seen a lot of you are working hard!)
as for relating to the prompts... hrm... *looks away and whistles innocently*
Awesome! I've added my fic so it won't be so sad and empty-looking.
Okay, here is the collection:
http://archiveofourown.org/collections/ssss_artd_100
I've copied the rules and the prompt table there. That way everyone will have one easy place to find it.
I find that when adding a new work to a collection, the easiest way to do it is to go to the collection page and click "post to collection" (top right hand corner). It will auto-fill the collection field for you.
If you're adding an already-posted work to the collection, here's how to do it:
-Go to the edit page for your fic.
-Scroll down to "post to collections/challenges". It's below the field for the author notes.
-Start typing in ssss_artd_100. It should give an option to select the collection. Select it.
-Scroll to the bottom and save as normal.
This was created as a sub-collection - basically what that means is, if we decide to make other SSSS/aRTD challenges, I will easily be able to create a new collection for those, and they will all be linked through one parent collection.
Please let me know if anything needs to be added or changed.
How is it going for everyone? Still struggling to reach the target? Already reached the goal? Completely given up on the goal? Maybe you're even aiming to double your goal!
I've managed to reach 44k, my goal was 25k, so I'm very satisfied with this camp. And with a few days left to go I miiiiight even be able to reach 50k!
And I'm allllmost finished my 10th work for the prompt challenge, which is nice. u3u (Some people here have written SO MANY, wow!)
Congratulations, Windy and Yuu ! :D
*Is already wondering what she will do for the "real" NaNo sometimes*
I have already decided on my november NaNo-project :D I decided that like... halfway through last november :PThree possibilities, even if one is "re-write this project again". I hadn't made a choice yet. November is still far away...

Well, I didn't have a wordcount goal, but I have stuck to the goal that I did set, which was one prompt a day, for the whole list. Also hit the 25% mark last night, woot!
I don't have a word-count, mainly because I think they're kind of constricting? I'm just eager to see how much I can get done. I'd like to be turning out about one or two prompts a day
Lazy I've noticed you and I are often posting the same number of prompts, or just one below or above the other. Uncanny, isn't it? As of writing this we're both at 25
Well, I've committed myself to a certain pace. So guess that depends on whether you've set a similar goal.
I'm supposed to beta/proof-read a friend. Instead of that, I'm writing all that I know about characters for a possible-project-for-the-next-NaNo. I'm weak é_è And why do I always have someone who can treat in a way or an other in my stories ? O_o (Okay, I don't have a lot of stories, but that's something coming back.) Do you have a kind of recurrent characters too ?

So, Camp NaNo is closing in already, and caught me by surprise when I remembered it a couple days ago. Anyone else going to participate? Since I didn't finish the challenge with last camp my plan is to continue this month, but I decided to only have 10k words as goal so there is time over for me to discover Skåne :P

I'm planning on doing Camp NaNo again, although I'm still figuring out my goal. :) Would anyone like to be part of a private cabin? I have one set up, and I can invite up to ten people. Just let me know. <3
/chinhandsHee! :D You are invited!
You know I would be totally up for that again, of course. < 3
Yesss, I want to join the private cabin! My username is (weirdly enough) "Windfighter"!Hee hee! I have added you! Be on the lookout for the email! :)
(Haha, I'm very easy to locate on most places, I'm almost always Windfighter unless that username is already taken and then I'm like "sure, I'll just add 88 to that since that was my birthyear" xD)

You know what...sure, why not? I wasn't really planning to do Camp NaNo, but it might help me actually finish some of the fics I've been starting and not finishing. My username over there is paintedmango (and boy, do I wish it was possible to change usernames without making a whole new account...*sigh*)You've been invited! :D

I made it in terms of wordcount, but I haven't really finished any of the things I intended to finish, ahhhhhghhhh. You cannot finish if you don't write at all. /fortunecookie
At least I wasn't completely unproductive? orz
I had completely forgotten that it was possible to announce your novel so early in October O _ o (I'm not reaaaaaaady!)
I'm considering doing NaNo this year (if college work will leave me enough time), but can someone answer a few newbie questions for me?I'll do my best.
-How do the word count goals work? Is there a general goal or can I set one for myself? For NaNo proper, your goal must be no less than 50,000 words, but there is no upper limit that I know of.
-What does it mean to announce your novel? It means you post your novel's title and a rough synopsis of what it's about.
-Does editing/rewriting what I've previously written count? For NaNo proper, no, though the internet police won't break your door in if you do.
-Can I work on multiple stories at once?Your "novel" can be a collection of short stories or novellas.
And I guess if there's anything else I really need to know to take part. Thanks! :)Just sign up on the NoNo website and you'll find all the answers you need there.

Aw, thank you Melu! I just announce my novel and I feel so official. Also a bit nervous because I've never written anything that approached 50,000 words, but I'm gonna try! You'll do your best and it's the most important thing for the NaNo ! :DSpoiler: show
Oh, hey Mel, I don't think I have added you to my NaNobuddies!Yay ! :D
I think I found you! wooo, one more buddy to my buddylist!
Now I have 2 buddies who has announced a novel \o/
I'm writing something this year for Nano, so if you want to cry with me you should buddy me- I'm amaranthinereturns. :^)I can't find you (yet ?) but you can add me if you want : the more we are, the more it's helping to continue writing :)
LESS THAN TWO WEEKS LEFT PEOPLE! ARE YOU PANICKING YET?!I'm more "I don't have enough titles in my playlist for the NaNo." than "Haaaaaaa, I know less where I'm going this year !" ::) Maybe I should try to finish to prepare this project...
It feels like all the cool stories have already been told and I just don't know what would hold my attention enough to write it, polish it, and share it with others (and also what would hold THEIR attention enough to read it, of course). I don't want to create a masterpiece, I just want to write something worthwhile for me and others. Short of fanfiction (which always is appreciated for obvious reasons), how do you writer types come up with ideas and know which ones are good enough to develop?
how do you writer types come up with ideas and know which ones are good enough to develop? The ones which stay in mind, despite being blurred, despite the fact that you would need a lot of other informations, are the ones which are "good enough to develop" for me. If I still think to this fragment of scene I "saw" at a moment, days/weeks/months ago, then I should pay more attention into it. But it's only how it works for me, and I fear it won't be very helpful :/
"He was just a small-town orange. But suddenly he had found himself in the company of some bad apples." badum-tiss
...I'm sorry.
Anyone else have extra big plans for NaNo?Not this year ^^ I wrote *Checks* 115294 words during the last NaNo and ended the month exhausted. This year, I plan to do something more quiet. Moreover, I have absolutely no idea about how long the novel I'm working on will be. So... I'm just writing my amount of words and will see if I have to write more or not to finish the story with the NaNo :)
Planning to do something more quiet sounds like a good idea, Melu. You really set a high bar last year. ;pI really wanted to re-write all this part of my novel... so it was a different goal. This year, I don't even know if my novel will be long enough to reach 50000 words *Shrugs* No idea. We'll see. I'll keep writing with all of you who are too and it's nice to do that together :)
I'm only at 960 words, it feels so weird to be this far behind!
I'm at 250, so at least you're beating me? ; )You're not the last one among my NaNo friends ;)
I managed to get 2260 words done last night, problem is I'm winging my story now and I'm not sure what's next. Will there even be a plot?! Good luck, everybody!
I've reached 2000 words for my NaNo and Emil is currently both dead and alive!
...So, is he undead, or are you working on more than one story? : D
Well, now one of my characters wants to start a new adventure. I'm a little unsure about it, but what else am I going to write about?Fb reminded me that two years ago, during my first NaNo, I posted something the day when one of my character had decided, with a very cold tone, to say "End of the class." and it was like being behind her shoulder and trying to catch her attention, thinking "What ? But... ? Hey, what are you doing, it's not even your class !" Ha, characters deciding something unexpected... ::)
Poor Emil. He always gets picked on doesn't he?

Urghhhh I'm off to such a slow start. Hardly written anything.*Pats pats Yuuago* All will be fine :) And it's the weekend, maybe you'll be a little more productive ?
I have a bunch of in-progress fragments from earlier months... maybe I should just focus on finishing those? orz
Today wasn't a good day to write, but I still have more than one day in advance, so I'm not worried. Writing a quiet NaNo is pleasant :) Completely an other experience, considering my previous ones. I appreciate it.
This interesting moment when you're at the middle of the month but still not sure if you're or not at the middle of your novel...
It begins in 3 minutes in France and I'm not readyyyyyyy...
Windy: Poor Emil. I hope he's doing better now. xD
Spoiler: ramblings, feel free to ignore show
I hope NaNo is going well for the rest of you, and have an update on my work, last sentence I wrote:
"Emil pressed his cheek against the wall. It had gotten three good punches by Tiger earlier in the day and was swollen and sore."
[...] I seriously can't picture how your carefully spoilered writings could be hurtful to anyone [...]

Also, hammering out a bajillion words while stuck with crutches seems like the best way to spend recovery time.
Is anyone thinking about the April Camp NaNoWriMo session besides me?
Thinking, but given my track record and the fact that I have tons of homework to do, maybe not?
Hi Windy? Do you want suggestions here? I don’t have Tumblr.
Anyways, here you are:
And yet the birds keep singingStartup spirits
There is no try
I’m hoping for SSSS stories obviously :)
